[help] Will the Rezound offer more rom options?

Basically, I'm thinking about trading in my Nexus for an HTC Rezound. Don't get me wrong: I freaking love this phone, and have been dying to get it for months. There's nothing wrong with it.
My issue is that I'm a flash-o-holic. Now that the Rezound has an unlocked boot loader, I'm worried that it will have more ROM options.
With the Rezound, I'll eventually be able to run ISC. it can run sense roms. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like with the Rezound I'd be able to flash everything I could with my Nexus PLUS all of the 2.3 and Sense roms, right? and that means more options.
So, I need some clarification:
Can the Nexus run anything other than 4.0 based roms? (like 2.3 based ones)
Can the Nexus potentially run a Sense rom?
With the bigger development community of the Nexus, am I better of staying where I am?

I don't think the GNex will have developers that will make ROMs based on older versions of Android... I mean why would they? I feel like the dev community of the Galaxy Nexus will be bigger than the Rezound's. This is a Nexus device and Google has amazing support for their Nexus phones. I doubt the Nexus will have a Sense ROM...
There are plenty of ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus right now... it's just that not all of them are on XDA. Check out Rootzwiki for more ROMs! I recommend axi0m 2.1.

Stick with what you have, this is the best phone for flashing roms. This will have the best support considering the support it has already.

I had an Incredible before, and was in love with it. GREAT dev community and tons of ROMs and development even to this day. I liked CM7 and MIUI, but I put a huge value on always being able to come back to Sense. One of my concerns with the Rezound is that the development and the development community will die after a couple months and the next bigger, brighter HTC phone comes out.
There's been enough of the Rezound vs Nexus threads and I'm sorry, so I want the focus in this thread to be only on the differences in the development, development communities, and which will have a bigger variety of ROMs...

I honestly feel like the Galaxy Nexus will have more developers because it's a Google phone. It's practically made for developers so I say just stick with this phone. It has the direct support from Google and there is no middle man between software and hardware.

Someone is trying to port touchwiz to the Nexus for God knows why.. I doubt we will ever have sense but I don't see the reasoning you have offered, OP. Saying that you always have sense to go back to to me sounds like you'll always be able to go back to stock sense if an ICS rom doesn't workout or something along those lines.. I know having sense means more options, but anything 2.3 will always be inferior to 4.0 in my eyes.

Not sure why you'd strive to flash 2.3 Sense ROMs on any phone if something newer was available.
You do realize that once HTC starts releasing Sense ICS ROMs, the devs will stop working on the 2.3 ROMs, right?
Just remember, development for a Nexus will always be solid.

I'm on axi0m 2.1 right now... its awesome with tons of options.
there are tons of roms out there for the nexus already, but they're all basically the same. Yes, AOSP vs CM9 has its differences, but they're different hues of the same color. I want colors, dammit! and I'm sure it'll get there...
I guess I'm just worried that it'll always be ICS with some slight twists, instead of 2.3 AOSP vs cm7 vs miui vs sense vs ice, etc. I like the idea of having all of those options

i guess I just got used to switching up roms every couple weeks or so with my incredible. I'd run a sense rom for a couple weeks, get bored with it, switch to cm7 for a couple weeks, switch to miui, etc.
I don't like the idea of finding one rom, and sticking with it forever, even if all others are "inferior." I like to mix it up.

I believe Vicious is working on MIUI for the GNex.

even though the Rezound realistically is the only competition for the Nexus, there:s just the whole "S-OFF" issue. last i heard, they're still trying to acheive that thus no roms yet.

Remember that the Galaxy Nexus (specifically the VZW version) hasn't exactly been out long enough for there to be 100's of ROMs. Not to mention that it's the first and only ICS device right now.

They still need s off to be able to fully do everything, all that's doing right now is unlocking part of boot loader but from what I hear they still can't flash custom recoverys. Anyhow I love my G Nex and I came from a Rezound I don't even think about going back at all.

If Sense means that much to you, maybe you should go with the Rezound (plus it has an amazing screen). Just remember that you won't have access to an optimal ICS build for a while. Sense is cool and all, but ICS is a huge step forward for the android OS.
Plus, the GN will be first in line for all software updates, which will keep its dev community on the bleeding edge. Also, as others have pointed out, dev support will be much stronger (and probably longer lasting) for the Galaxy Nexus.

The Nexus is a dev device... doesn't get more from friendly than this.

Going from ICS 4.x back to anything 2.3.x is like wiping before you poop....pointless!

Nexus has several advantages.
1) bigger screen, hopefully devs will be able to utilize the full screen for all apps
2) virtual keys
therefore even with both having ICS, it won't be exactly the same. (rest of the hardware is debatable as both have pluses and minus - like screen tech/sd card/etc)
Besides, nexus is likely far more popular so the number of devs attracted to this device will likely be much higher.

sure the manufacturer offers the 'unlock' ability, but the carrier has the final say. both the rezound & the droid razr have the ability to be unlocked, but verizon wont let it happen. so with the rezound, since the devs cant get htc to permit the unlock(again, thank you verizon) they've just been attempting a work around now since the phone's been out and to this day are still struggling with it. so no roms/kernals/etc yet.. just a b.s. "temp root".

Dude.. the Rezound's bootloader has been unlocked, even on Verizon. They're S-ON but with an unlocked bootloader.

[Q] Time to upgrade........

OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?
I'm going to post this question in the HOX, SGN, and SGS3 forums too, to (try to) get a balanced view.

I was already to get the Note, then I picked one up and it's a Samsung. It was like Agent J and the noisy cricket. The One X still pisses me off with it's non removable battery and no external storage slot. The SGS III will be a Samsung. I don't understand why their phones feel so cheap. HTC's plastics aren't that toy-like.
Sprint's Evo LTE gives me hope though. It's nearly a One X with a bigger, though still not removable, battery and it has a micro sd slot. Maybe the next upgrade for the "flagship" will get them also.
Just my thoughts but I guess I would wait to see what else is coming. The SGS III may be better than I think or maybe something else can make me a fool.
I'm liking ICS on it now and it will only get better when the official update comes out.

Thanks BLG - I know where you are coming from.
Having owned 5 HTC devices on the spin, I feel a little grubby myself considering Samsungs! ;-)
However, here lies part of the problem - I think I'm bored of HTC, and the One X and One S are just so.... safe looking. Where is the design flair? Plus, I've never been much of a ROM flasher (although I did put Vegacomb on my tablet), preferring to have a device that works rather than list the compromises and things which dont quite work properly, so stock Sense is now getting very stale indeed.
Maybe I need to turn to the dark side briefly just to satisfy my curiosity that the grass isnt always greener?

I'm sure I will go wrap my mitts around the SGS III asap. I just want my next device to look, feel and dammit, smell better than what I have. Besides, touchwiz is just
UGLY.

Hmmmm, an interesting alternative, there. Whatever I decide, I'll probably keep the DHD anyway and use it as a test device for flashing/generally mucking about.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with.

When you say dark side, meaning Apple of course, have you ever considered Windows Phone? I'm much the same as you. Although playing around with the various DHD custon ROMs and having the freedom of Android has been enjoyable; I'm now thinking I just want a phone that works and doesn't need to be mucked around with. Was tossing up Windows Phone, maybe the HTC Titan as an upgrade. Thoughts?

Best phone available IMHO and I have had them all

This is the only Android phone with the build quality of an iPhone. I couldn't be happier with mine. No sub-models to worry about either, although the MAXX is coming soon if you feel like carrying around a phablet all the time.

if at first you're worried about battery life. do not despair. it gets much better

In no particular order:
- Non replaceable batter and no SD card. Cost for a very good looking device
- Battery can last a day of normal use but you have to be careful and monitor your app usage.
- Unlockable by Rumrunner.
- Nice selection of AOSP roms, but some have issues depending on your usage.
- If you do go the flashing route and pick a AOSP rom make sure to turn on your GPS, open maps and get a lock before rebooting into the recovery. This will make sure you do not have any gps issues after the flash.
- Sounds is very nice when playing audio via the speakers.
- Camera performance is a mixed bag depending on your usage. I find it works great for quick snapshots in low light...where I am most of the time I need to capture a picture.
- Speaking of Camera, if you can check the camera at the store before taking home. Open the app and cover the lens. If it shows purple or red ask for another unit. This appears to be a build quality issue that may be fixable via software. Sprint reports very mixed results from the fix so double check before getting one.
- Verizon has an update to 4.2. We expect a 4.3 update by the end of the month...not sure what month but the end of some month .
With all that being said I love this phone and would not trade it for anything. I thought I was going to miss my hardware keyboard but so far I have only had a couple of times that it would have been nice.

I think Verizon is taking a long time to update to 4.3 because they want to patch Rumrunner. Wouldn't be surprised if this is the case.

Only caveat I'd say is we're missing that low power proc that's going to be all the rage in future iterations of Android (the always-on voice commands of the Moto X). If you're alright with that, it's a fine phone.
Oh, and it's missing a softkey. I've gone ahead and rooted my phone, but I have to say, I've felt very little desire to flash a new ROM (which I was doing all the time on my old HTC Droid Incredible). This phone is surprisingly satisfying as is.

I haven't seen a sub model except for the HTC One Mini. I know the One Mini lost some features since it is the smaller version of the HTC one. But one thing is that Sprint's(and I think T-Mobile's) HTC one has FM radio and Verizon/AT&T disabled/removed the fm radio functionality in theirs.
Other than the FM radio, I think everything else is just if you want GSM or CDMA.
There's also a Google Play Edition coming out for the HTC one, but you can root the HTC one now and install a GPE rom.
But I feel 100% that I made the correct choice of choosing between the S4 and the ONE. S4's user interface was too cluttered. HTC one's Sense interface is much smoother and simple. Music is great with the stereo speakers and watching movies/play games is also fun.
Check out your BB store and there might still be one on display that functions. Test it out. I spent 30 mins at BB messing around with it.

A GPE Rom for Verizon from HTC?

You have nothing to worry about if you are purchasing a HTC One, these are absolutely fantastic phones. The only downside to these phones is that they do not have a sd card or removable battery but apart from that I have not had any complaints about the phone. One of the best things about this phone is the build quality, I really do like that the phones are made from a single block of anodized aluminum, in my personal opinion I think the build quality is superior to the iPhone.
HTC Sense is also another reason to go with the HTC One over the S4. While both Touchwiz and Sense have their pros and cons, touchwiz is all about cramming as many features and settings and options into the phone as it possibly can, HTC Sense on the other hand is focused on the user experience and creating a more intuitive UI.
Another benefit to this phone is that development is moving forward rather nicely, granted things could always be better and the Verizon HTC One is by no means one of the leading phones for developers that does not mean we are without fun things to flash, I for one have thoroughly enjoyed my HTC One and I have no doubt in my mind that I will continue to enjoy this phone for years to come, it is that awesome. The Verizon HTC One has only been out for a little over 2 months and we already have 2 different s-off methods and multiple Sense, AOSP and GPE Roms for users to choose from, not to mention it appears that Team Venom will be making an appearance in our development section in the near future. I have not personally used a Venom rom but from what I have heard their roms are in the same league as the CyanogenMod roms, a lot of people here are anxiously awaiting the Venom rom release.

Another benefit of the HTC One is the Dropbox promotion, you get 23 gigs of space for 2 years. In order to get the promotion to work you need to install Newt's NOS rom and follow the instructions in my post - Dropbox 23GB Promotion - Workaround
One of the few complaints I do have is that the kernel source has not been released yet for the Verizon HTC One, there is no doubt that this will eventually be released but when that will happen is anyone guess, it could happen next week or after Christmas.

I do not know if we are getting a Verizon GPE HTC One, however we do have these two roms in the dev section - NOS 1.0.2 m7wlv Google Play Edition - and - Eclipse One Google Play Edition

iPhone 6s and never looking back.
Please call me a troll if it makes you happy but we al strive for a lag free experience hacking at android and never fully gaining what we want even with the ported not so functional MIUI based on 4.4

I used to think the same exact way until I purchased this one,now I still have my beloved Nexus 5 and my Samsung Tab S 8.4 so I'm not completely tainted.
After owning Android for over 8 years what you mention above is exactly why I have become board with Android.
I've mentioned it before in past threads how dry and plain the Roms have become sense 5.0
No one builds from complete scratch anymore,just look at the credits,commits.
Other than stock Roms Cyanogenmod is always the base witch means out the gate your Camera and sound won't work.

It's a matter of preference and philosophy. Most of us want an excellent experience and there are trade-offs regardless of whether you run stock or unlock/root and install custom roms or hacks. In my case T-Mobile wifi calling has recently become an essential feature because of signal strength problems in my house, so I'm pretty much confined to using T-Mobile branded stock devices. Before this I always rooted and installed roms, but I can't say I miss the added control and functionality (too much, anyway). I still prefer Android to iPhone because I feel there is more feature selectivity, but I understand the OPs position and hope his iPhone serves him well. Best of luck!

Not pointless really,I found a solution to most issues and felt the need to share.
No need for Roms if it runs good out of the box or people would be hacking past just teathering and the App Store

i love one plus 7T

who else love it

I thought there was gonna be a "but" on the text lol. I do love it too, I came to this phone from a Pocophone and the only thing i miss is the custom ROMs development on the Oneplus 7T.

I came from pocophone too. Lack of development is kinda disappointing, and i recently saw that delevopers said "TWRP may never come because of the new partition layout on android 10".

Don't know if it's never gonna come or devs just haven't had the time to work on it. I read on their blog that the primary dev was having his child born and coudn't work on it. Also if I'm not mistaken the only phones with Android 10 out of the box as of right now are the Pixel 4 series and the Oneplus 7T series so not a lot to work on. Wait until Xiaomi, Samsung and more brands release Android 10 by default and I think development of TWRP on this new kind of partition system is gonna get more attention. That is why I'm hopeful that development for this phone can get more attention "soon-ish".

If google would just make something this quality i would buy one of their phones already. I was dissapointed in the looks of the pixel 4. They cheaped out on their components to maximize profits and its obvious. I have been mostly happy with the oneplus 7t but it has had some serious quirks too. I have had to reset mine several times and I am dealing with gps issues constantly.

I mostly love my OnePlus 7t. Though it has some issues. That need addressed. Also the lack of customization options is irritating coming from a custom ROM standpoint.

Can't wait for TWRP to de-google this phone, but outside of that I totally love it. Although, to be fair this is my very first 'smart' phone so I really have nothing to compare it to. I think it's pretty damn great, actually.

I like it but will definitely hold off on next purchase to make sure development is more active. Luckily oxygen os is pretty decent, but still leaves a lot to be desired.

Can you guys tell me, what exactly you lack of for customization features? No offense, just out of curiosity.
I am flashing all of the devices in my household since the HTC desire days, like for the past 5..6..7 years or so... Constantly looking for the optimal ROM for me or my fiance's use case, tinkering with custom kernels, governer settings, blocking wakelocks... Whatsoever.
This is the first device I am happy with while it is just unlocked and rooted witch only a 1 magisk module active. For me android and OSS has come such a long way that all I build in aftermarket is now integrated in stock. Now it is just rooted, debloated and adfree. That's it for me. Although I somehow miss the long nights of flashing and trying out multiple stuff one after another, but also life gets more serious and time consumable so it's ok for me. I guess same for most of the gurus from the old days.. lol
I now can do my hobby more or less for a living, so no need to do it in my free time anymore...
What do you guys think? Is it just my feeling that the development branch somehow radically changed?

I love this phone I installed Omni via adb and never looked back. I really want to get a lineage build on it but the builds I tried to make are very broken.

I agree. Since I left HTC (the M9 being he last one) I have not had the need to flash a custom ROM. Was on a Nokia 8 previously and the vanilla-ish android was good. I only missed the weather clock and mail app from HTC - but they are going down sadly so had to jump ship. Left Nokia as they launched too many phones and were not fixing bugs on their ex-flagships - promised to fixed their camera app but never came for example.
With the 7T I have to say I hardly have any complaint. Customisations are great and the phone is amazing. Adjusting the bokeh blur (live bokeh) would have been great even if it was after taking the photo but nothing else to complain about to be fair.
I do miss the old late nights flashing ROMS though - but like you say, life is different now. I haven't even rooted the Nokia and 7T! haha

Same for me! Running latest stable OSS (10.0.12) with xXx Rom/Module and thats it. Happy as I've been with any of my other OnePlus phones

Hi, I also came from Poco F1. Amazing phone. Took me a while to get use to OP7T even thought it is better in many ways. I bought it new for 300 pounds and then after a year on October 2019 I found a deal like hell and bought a new OP7T for 360 pounds. Amoled display was the biggest advantage I noticed for the first time. Later I could not even look on the Poco F1 display and before I was astonished by the quality of the LCD panel. I got so much used to the face unlock on F1 cause it was so freaking fast and precise even at complete dark. That and the fast fingerprint scanner is another think I missed for a while. But eventually I get used to the in-display one (but they still could add one more on the back cause it is the perfect place for it). Also that I was so used to the MIUI, the environment was kind of weird for me. But with little bit of tweaking and setting up Nova launcher, which I have been using already for like 8 years anyway, helped a lot. And I even found some tweaks I could not do in MIUI. But like you mentioned, there were so much variety of ROMs and hell I like rooting, flashing and stuff like this. There is also one function I found only in MIUI and which helped me a lot when I came lazy like hell from night shift home and that is that you could mirror your screen to smart TV, lets say play a sitcom or whatever, and minimize it on the device itself so I could be on FB, YT, even play a games and not disturb media streaming to my TV. I wish Oneplus add this feature in future.
