I have done some search over the Internet and got different answers from different people
1. What's the difference between the unlocked and the Verizon phone sold in the Google store? Is the Verizon version bootloader or SIM locked and not unlockable? What's the difference if you buy an unlocked phone and got a SIM from Verizon separately, vs you buy a Verizon version?
2. What's the difference between the two OTA versions:
8.0.0 (OPD1.170816.025, Nov 2017, EMR)
8.0.0 (OPD3.170816.023, Nov 2017, Verizon EMR)
Some says there are some verizon apps included if you download that version. Is it the only difference?

Verizon version bootloader is locked and can't be unlocked
google version can be unlocked if you want
google + version sim or any sim will work (no contract :good
8.0.0 (OPD1.170816.025, Nov 2017, EMR)
8.0.0 (OPD3.170816.023, Nov 2017, Verizon EMR)
the same
the only different version apps are disabled by default on the first and enabled on the second
Then why would anyone buy the Verizon version phone?

I guess maybe because of contracts or contract extensions or of discounts at verizon.

Vzw offers better prices on trade ins, a payment plan like Google does, plus they offer promos sometimes where Google does not
The radio.img is different on the Verizon build as well.
If you have a Pixel 2 XL from the Google Store and use it on Verizon, which OTA should you use for sideloading? I want the November patch and am considering sideloading it since it's not showing up for me yet, but I don't want to apply the wrong one. (Would it let me?)

I have to disagree with most of the respondents here; I'm on Verizon. I bought an unlocked version from google (without sim card); my phone is unlocked. When my phone received the November update it was 8.0.0 (OPD3.170816.023, Nov 2017, Verizon EMR). There were no verizon apps in the update.

If you bought it from the Google store, use EMR. Don't use Verizon. You cannot apply the wrong one. The OTA will fail if it cannot confirm that it is the correct device.
Wifi calling. Carriers have had the policy of only allowing Wifi calling on their own phones, not unlocked versions.

I have the Google Store unlocked Pix 2 XL, and it runs either version of November software. Gets good Verizon signal on both.
I decided to stay with the Verizon version. Remember to update Android Tools before you do this.

If you have a Verizon SIM, I would go with the OPD3. This recommendation is based off the Verizon OPD3 having a different radio than OPD1. My guess, OPD3 is tuned for Verizon somehow.
I actually created a standalone thread with some information and findings, feel free to take a look...

This fixes that. Even though that specific thread is for the og pixel xl the same adb commands work on the 2 xl.

Good post about Verizon sims and Google Unlocked version. Have you by any chance relocked and then unlocked your
Px2 XL bootloader when using Verizon sim and software? I could not do that on similar original PixelXL.
Thanks.

I just enabled the setting and it worked. It worked on both the stock out of the box firmware and on 8.1 dev preview. I'm not sure if the latest OTA broke it or not because I won't have my replacement phone until this evening.
I've been checking it since yesterday. No luck so far
No for me I'm still on DP2 still nothing
My Pixel 2 XL isn't a Verizon one, but the Pixel 2 phones we just got in for work did get 8.1 today.
Still no OTA over dp2 here either... VZW
Can't the Verizon phone use the Google Ota. If so just download the Ota.zip and sideload adb and install it.

I don't think so. I tried it and it kept failing. Looking at the list of OTAs there are separate 8.0 files for Verizon so I think we need to wait.
Just because they were separate one month, doesn't mean that will be the case the next month. The separate builds might come together into a unified build and then split again the month after.
In the case of the December build, there is one build for all carriers. Verizon's support page has the same build number listed as what's on the Google OTA page. https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/google-pixel-2-xl-update/
Yes and no
I have not, interestingly enough, my wife got it yesterday morning. We have the same exact phone, through Verizon, Pixel 2 XL 128GB. I even try to update manually (through System Update), but I keep getting the same response, "Your system is up to date, Android Version: 8.0.0, Security patch level: November 5, 2017"
Still waiting here. I get message that I'm up to date when using system update, patched to Nov 7th.
Verizon is my carrier, but I bought the non-Verizon 128GB
I'm on DP2 and got my 8.1 final last night. Unlocked from Google on Verizon.
Also, if you bought your phone from Verizon, you CAN sideload the OTA. There were people on here with Verizon bought phones that sideloaded the non-Verizon OTA for the November security update. Plus, some Verizon users have gotten the update. I'm *thinking* Google just released one version this time.
I received it yesterday late afternoon. 64GB version bought from Verizon.
Just got it this morning, beta program, Pixel 2 XL 128GB Verizon.
still nothing for me... unlocked google store version on vzw network
What are the noteworthy upgrades that come with 8.1?

Received update yesterday. I was running DP2, unlocked Google Store version on Vzw network.
I received mine last night.
64GB purchased from Verizon.
Haven't had a chance to test the Bluetooth issues I've been having with my Gear S3 Frontier and my vehicle to see if they have been resolved.
Noticed that once in a while my screen will flash white when I grab it while the Always On display is active(4 times in the past 24 hours). Didn't have that behavior with 8.0.

Considering it's through Verizon I'm surprised your wife got it. Does Verizon now actually allow Google to be in control of the updates instead of Verizon having to approve it?

You got me on that one...and I am still waiting on the update. Just to clarify, got them at Best Buy (each about a month apart), Verizon is my carrier. Then I come to read that some people had ordered the phones, through Verizon last week, received the phone on Monday, and got the update Wednesday...oh well.
Just a quick question, but will I get security updates on my Pixel 2xl the day they're released (ie. today) while being on Koodo? Or will they block it and I'll need to flash it myself?

I don't know anything about the Koodo MVNO, but Security updates are always on a phased roll out schedule by IMEI over the course of 2-3 weeks. You could get it today... or 3 weeks from now, or never. Maybe this will help you decide. The full factory image for September is waiting for you HERE right now. Or you can just read about it HERE.

Do you know if AT&T Prepaid plans delay updates?
.......sorry posted on wrong topic.
He's saying that it's not carrier controlled for the updates. So the answer would be no. If you can't wait a day or few, learn to sideload the OTA. It's literally to commands and it's installed in a few minutes. That what I just did this morning.

Purchased a Pixel 3 XL Unlocked in hopes of utilizing my gUDP on Verizon without issue similar to other unlocked phones like PH1 and Note 8. Pixel arrived today, and no go. Does anyone have any clue why this is? Do I have to wait for root to be able to use hotspot? I'd have to have to get rid of the device, but this is a big issue for me.

What's the specific issue you're having? What doesn't work?
Looks like it's doing a subscription check (which with the grandfathered unlimited plan isn't included) and won't allow hotspot to be enabled. I knew buying a Verizon version would likely cause this to happen. Other unlocked devices have worked however without issue.
The Pixel XL is the same way on Verizon. I have one that I purchased directly from Google. In order to get the hotspot working you will need to root the phone and edit the build prop to include this line: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

That's unfortunate, then keeping updated is a pain isn't it?
How long after launch is root usually obtained?
I bought the pixel from Google and tethering does not work on Verizon like it did with the older phones so it looks like Google is now checking even if you buy unlocked. But with Magisk tethering enabler tethering works. You need to search the forums for the patched version that works with the newest Magisk.

Sorry, off topic; but you still have the old grandfathered unlimited? I used to have it until Verizon forced me off of it for "using too much data". I survived the first wave when they were forcing people off the plan but eventually they had a thing were if you were using over 100GB a month on average they were terminating your line. I consistently used around 300GB a month and sometimes even more so one day I got a notification that they were terminating my line and I needed to "upgrade" (which was really a huge downgrade for more money) to one of the new unlimited lines.
Anyway, Sorry again, I was just shocked to hear people are still on the old school unlimited which the whole time I had it was true unlimited with no throttling. Best plan in cell phone history and I miss it so much :'(
Root already established

Ok perfect. Maybe I'll keep the device then and wait for root instructions.
Yes still have gUDP. I use it daily at work but tend to keep it under 100gb a month. I don't do any heavy video streaming etc to ensure I stay under each month. They did increase the data to $49.99 over the $29.99. Still no throttling and up to 100gbs can't be beat.

So is Samsung neglecting the S21 FE?
It probably has more to do with the carriers at this point. They still have to attach all of their bloatware to it.

Part of their commitment has been a very public announcement about consistent support and a minimum number of OS updates. Having purchased a Samsung for this reason, I'm beginning to feel concerned about the device's security.
I have the SM-G990U1/DS and even though it's unlocked it seems to be based on a T-Mobile build based off the "TMB" in the URL I'm given to "learn more" from my last successful update on Dec 20th. According to Sammobile, none of the G990U1 models have received OneUI 5 yet, but the G990U *has*... for the ones carrier locked to Comcast or Xfinity Mobile.

I had the same problem with a G990U1/DS model. I bought it used from Amazon. Although it is unlocked, my carrier is ATT and i could not get visual voicemail to work. I spent 2 hrs with ATT tech support and could not get it to work. For some reason, some aspects of the phone (including visual VM), was native to verizon or t-mobile and could not be undone. Althought the used phone was in MINT condition, i had to return it because it didnt play well with ATT.
ATT has a list of 21FE models compatible with their network and G990U1/DS was not on their list of devices.

But they do support the non "DS" (dual SIM) version. In general, AT&T has become very picky lately on which devices they'll deem "compatible". And for no good reason.
Has anyone tried this for our S21 FE? And, what is XAA?
