i upgragde my phone from LP to the lastet MM update.
i wat with root in LP but before i update to MM i did unroot from SU and now i without root.
how do i root my zenfone again?

Yes, you can. You can use tethered TWRP method to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader.
Since you are using TWRP in tethered mode, you do not need to install the TWRP as such you DO NOT need to unlock the bootloader and you still have your stock recovery.
This guide tells you how to root, install xposed and downgrade. Just read the root part and unroot part.
I do not use the twrp mention in that post. Download the latest twrp here.
I did use the BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328-patch-by-shakalaca-for-zenfone2-6.0.zip mentioned in that post.
The guide mentioned that your bootloader need to be unlocked, however you are using twrp in tethered mode so unlocking the bootloader is unnecessary.
I hope you know how to use the adb.

like a stupid i try to sideload twrp and now i got without any recovery beacuse i cant enter there..
how i back to stock recovery? i download 3 files for 2.20.40.174 (now im on MM) and i forgot how i sideload this for it work.
can you tell me pls? and after it, i just need to get my phone into bootloader and sideload the super su file? what i need to write for sideload it? really thank for help

You can not sideload TWRP. TWRP has to be flashed into recovery partition. Since bootloader is locked, your sideloading TWPR could not be successful as such you still have your stock recovery.
Try to get into recovery.
You might be stuck in the dead robot with red triangle. In that case press and hold the power button, and press and release the volume up button quickly. Try several time until you got into recovery.
If your phone is not booting at all and could not detect from the adb, you might need to flash the .raw file via asus flash tool.
Once your phone is back to normal, follow the guide I mentioned in the previous post to root the phone. You can flash supersu zip in the TWRP install tab.
You can press thank button if my post is helping you.

You can not install the supersu from the stock recovery. Rooting the phone requires to modify the boot.img. From Stock recovery it is not allowed.. As such you need custom recovery like TWRP.
copy the supersu that I mentioned in the previous post to the sd card.
Follow the instructions from the root section of the the guide that I mentioned in the previous post.
That guide tells you to run TWRP in tethered mode.
The command fastboot boot <twrp.img> will move the twrp.img to your phone and let your phone boot into twrp .
Once you are in the twrp, tab the install from zip tab and select the supersu zip file you move to the sd card. If you do not know how to use twrp there are a lot of videos on youtube about twrp.

I am glad that work out for you.
At the end of supersu installation you might see the message saying that you would get that verification error message and tell you to ignore that. I did see that message twice and after that I do not see that message anymore every time I reboot the phone.
I can not help you on the xposed though because I did not install the xposed. I just rooted my phone. If you want you could follow that guide. Load the twrp in the tethered mode and install the xposed from the twrp.

Sorry for rising this 1yo thread.
It seems the tethered TWRP couldn't be successfully flashed on both LP (latest releases) either MM (any release) unless the bootloader is locked. The boot command doesn't give errors, but the phone won't reboot and stay in fastboot/bootloader mode.
Could you confirm that's working on MM, nowadays ?

You still can OTA, even your phone is rooted.
Only their is some tips you need to know:
1. Don't delete or change any files and apps that is build-in on system.
Even you want to delete apps made from telecom operators IS NOT PERMITTED!
2. Recovery need flash back to original version.
For these two tips, you can do OTA even your phone is rooted.
But note that YOU NEED TO ROOT AGAIN every OTA.

Speaking to point 2:
I recommend not flashing a custom recovery at all. You can boot to TWRP/CWM/Philz from fastboot without flashing, and this leaves your stock recovery intact.
To do this: download your preferred recovery image. Let's say it's called "openrecovery-2.7.0.3-m8.img"
Copy this file to the same folder your "fastboot" executable is in on your computer.
Boot your phone into fastboot and connect it to your computer via USB.
Type in the following on your computer:

fastboot boot openrecovery-2.7.0.3-m8.img
Now your phone will boot into TWRP without touching your partitions or anything else that might affect OTAs. Apply your root.zip update and reboot!
EDIT: Once you've booted into your custom recovery from fastboot, you can disconnect the USB, so you're not stuck at your PC.

Hello,
I have the same question as the OP. Everything seems to make sense when following this post. My question is even though I will just boot into recovery without ever flashing the recovery am I really able to disconnect my phone from the computer? It seems like the recovery files are actually on the computer so I would need to keep the phone connected while I install the supersu.zip

I don't see why you would want to disconnect it but the image should be loaded into ram so I assume it would be safe to disconnect. I have never tried it though :/

Ok I guess I should just leave it connected since I just need to install the supersu.zip file.
Every time an OTA update is applied will I just need to boot into TWRP recover and reinstall the supersu.zip file in order to regain root access?

There's no reason you *can't* leave it plugged in, but yeah, when you run the fastboot command it loads the custom recovery into RAM, and the connection to your computer is doing nothing for you. I give my personal guarantee that it's 100% safe to disconnect after recovery's loaded. But again, if leaving it plugged in makes you more comfortable, it won't hurt.

I had a device with root, s-off, unlocked etc... but stock recovery, stock rom,..
today I got the ota, updated without any problems... I just needed to boot into custom recovery afterwards and install the root.zip

Did you just install the regular supersu file?
I read this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2755657) and it seems that if I install the regular supersu root file the OTA update will fail.
Just wondering if you just used the regular files in order to root your phone.

Can you please guide me through the entire process on how to install the OTA update and not lose root, I don't have much knowledge when it comes to flashing into recovery, etc. I do have an HTC One M8 with S-Off. I would be eternally grateful if you could help me out.

Dude, do the research yourself. I don't know how many more times this has to be said. There's nothing special you have to do, just apply the OTA update when prompted
Someone if you know and tested it, can I root my htc one m8 device having the new firmware updated 5.0.1 lolipop??

I had already TWRP in my phone so I download your files. Opened the recovery and I did from there (install). When it finished rebooted the device and after that when i did a root check it said root access not properly install or sometihing

Open the SuperSU app, and it will prompt you to install the binaries. Select yes, of course.

I tried the normal it didnt work, how I do the second, I pressed it but nothing happened!
I don't think you have twrp installed anymore, or not properly. You've flashed it with fastboot, since updating to lollipop? How did you update to lollipop?
Normal, I never had root before. Upgraded my phone to 5.0 and then i tried to root it
Rooted fine here with normal method. Just had to update super su.
OK, can you please walk us through exactly what steps to Root you took. From the beginning. And we'll see what happened.

SO GUYS, ITS ME THAT I CREATED THIS THREAD! PROBLEM SOLVED. I ALREADY HAD TWRP AND DOWNLOADED THE Update-supersu file from the above youtube video (links) and I did it with recovery mode. I DONT KNOW BUT THE PREVIOUS supersu I installed couldnt update the su binary. This one did it. PROBLEM SOLVED AND I ROOTED MY 5.0.1 LOLIPOP DEVICE.

Root by unlocking the bootloader via HTCDev.com and then just install custom recovery and flash current (2.56) SuperSU zip.
One click root solutions won't work with a locked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader is really the key.
Once rooted, you can OTA. But you need to have stock ROM (nothing altered in /system partition) and you need to re-install stock recovery. Root is okay (although you will likely lose root) and unlocked bootloader is okay to OTA. To root again after an OTA, just install custom recovery and flash SuperSU again.

1) Installing HTCSync should be fine to get the HTC drivers on your computer; or you can search XDA for more recent HTC drivers. The HTC drivers linked in the guide are really old.
2) Get the latest SuperSU zip here: http://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
3) And if you need an easy adb/fastboot installer, just use the XDA seach function with the phrase "simple adb" and you will get a few results for beginner adb guides and installers.

hello I saw your post Im planning also to root my m8 but I dont want to flash the custom recovery someone told me it is possible
just download the custom recovery
then type "fastboot boot recovery.img" = this will boot my m8 to custom recovery but not flash so I can flash the supersu in that custom recovery then reboot after that stock recovery is still intact

That's true, you can boot TWRP remotely with fastboot, without actually flashing it (installing to the phone).
Although its slightly irrelevant; you can always flash back to stock recovery back to the phone (over-write TWRP). You can either find your stock recovery posted in the collection; or back it up your self using the fastboot TWRP trick (fastboot boot TWRP, and use TWRP to backup stock recovery). In that instance, the fastboot boot TWRP trick is very useful.
Having TWRP installed after root is very useful. Reason being, it gives you a lot more recovery options if things go south. woah didnt know that I can back up the stock recovery by fastboot boot in TWRP BTW if I'm using this phone I will probably use a TWRP but its my gf who uses it so she just need the root access for xmod app because she is an coc adik haha and she doesnt know about modding its system, thanks for this wonderful information

hello I need your help this m8 is previously rooted have supersu installed then take OTA before now it is not rooted but the supersu still intact on my apps, I fastboot boot twrp.img then went smoothly flash the supersu.zip but Im still unrooted any suggestion? it say on root checker the root access is not properly installed
update: sorry got root now I flashed the 1.94.zip which is very outdated didnt notice it flashed the latest 2.46.zip now its rooted thank you so much!
Hello I finally started downloading everything to get started. I start the process to unlock the bootloader but when i get to the part i need to type "fastoboom oem....." On cmd I get an error saying Adbwinapi.dll is missing try reinstalling the program.
What can I do to fix this?

I bought today G4 eu model,it came with Marshmallow 6.0 V20d version.
I want to root it because of Greenify and Xposed,to increase the battery time,maybe later to flash some rom but...
There is a lot of topics on this subject,I started to read but I'm lost right now...as far as I saw,I can't root Marshmallow without unlocking the bootloader,only Lollipop,right?
Is it a big trouble to go back from MM to LP?
I'm not new in this flashing and rooting stuff,I had (still have) a Motorola Razr XT910,I flashed it 100 times for sure for 3.5 years but I didn't had to unlock the bootloader (it's impossible anyway) and there's a custom recovery Safestrap,modified Twrp which allows to flash and use 6 different roms,from JB to MM,without changing the kernel...
I will be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction,to give me some useful links etc.
And is there some list which procesess are safe to freeze with TB and which ones I can greenify?

root without unlocking bootloader works only on lollipop, right. Not sure if u can downgrade, but when, u will use "LGUP" tool with the "H81510D.kdz" file. Maybe there exists a pre-rooted kdz to flash.
If u want to root android 6, u need a unlocked bootloader. Rooted Android 5.1.1 or unlock bootloader with rooted android 6.x.x

Install Twrp with adb command and then flash SuperSu with Twrp?
Install both with adb command?
I also saw somewhere that I must flash some other kernel that is already rooted...

In my case I wasn't able to flash recovery on the stock kernel, I had to flash boot.img unpacked from the custom kernel like SimpleGX and only then I was able to flash recovery and full kernel through it.

the method i followed was-
1. boot into twrp recovery with adb command(you need to have the twrp.img file in PC and also copy it in internal memory of your phone with SU)
2. flash systemless root with twrp
3. reboot
4. install flashify
5.flash twrp.img from your phone.
6. done
but there aren't as much benefits of rooting as any other phone. viper4android doesn't work. spirit fm doesn't work. xposed doesn't work properly.(these 3 were the main reasons for which i rooted)

I didn't know i could flash something other than .zip files with twrp.
As for viper4android i tried normal way, flashed it with twrp, flashed extreme music mod with v4a fix. None seem to work. The drivers never get installed.
Xposed i haven't tried. I was in process of getting more information about it by reading various threads. But all seem to point to problems like bootloop, fc and Bluetooth issues. Can you guide me towards the best version of xposed for v20d with way to avoid problems or with as less problems as possible?

Flash Imperium Kernel or SimpleGX Kernel. I used their kernels and ROMS on my older phones, they are legend. I suggest you to flash Imperium Rom. It includes kernel and everything and it is updated regularly by its dev.

reboot -> recovery

I think doesn't need to install recovery to root the phone.
Just this:
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot boot TWRP-2-8.7.0-h815.img
Wait a second and it will open, on the phone, the recovery.
Once open go to Advanced -> ADB sideload and take a swipe to start it where it says "Swipe to Start sideload".
Now on the PC write
3) adb sideload BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247.zip
( If it says after the instalation to install supersu etc just abort it)
And then, when installation is complete, press "Reboot System"
I rooted it this way, without install TWRP Recovery

Yeah - but the question has to be asked - why unlock the bootloader and root and not install TWRP? If you've got as far as unlocking the bootloader you might as well make life easier for yourself and install TWRP - that way anything you want to flash in the future can be done without being tethered to the PC, and also allows you to take proper full system image backups etc.

Of course , i agree with you. By the way, we can't root g4 on m6 without unlocked bootloader.
And finally, i decided to pass twrp on my phone, for every file i want to install from twrp, and not every time to boot from pc

Hey, been a while I visited here though but this site has always been my first call when I have issues with my Android.
Kindly help me. I have this m8 intl ver. running marshmallow and I have been trying to use kingroot to root the phone but all the versions I have used so far couldn't get the job done. I am inaccessible to a computer. Although I once used kingroot long time ago when the phone was running lollipop and it worked. After I upgraded the OS to 6.0, the kingroot didn't work.
If kingroot doesn't work, I don't think you have any choice but to use a PC to unlock the bootloader, etc.
Even if you don't personally have a PC, surely a friend or family member has one, they will let you use for an hour or so? Buy them a 6 pack or something, for the privilege.

If your bootloader is unlocked, then you don't need a PC. Do you have TWRP installed? There are ways to flash it without a PC (from SD in hboot) if you don't. If you already have TWRP then flash SuperSU with it or a rooted ROM (most M8 ROMs are rooted).
I used to have a TWRP.zip that was flashable from extSD, but I've deleted it from my DropBox. If you need one I could make another

I never even thought of it being unsigned, but of course you can't. With my HTC devices I have went S-Off soon after getting them, so I was thinking to myself "yeah, I've done that after an RUU"

You put the 0P6BIMG.zip on root of your microsd, then reboot to hboot. System will scan and ask you to update, volume up to update. Once finish, reboot .. you have TWRP 3.0.2-0 already installed.
Then download SuperSU.zip.
Boot to recovery (TWRP) - select install SuperSU.zip - done, now your device is rooted.
If you want me to edit the OS no. to fit your current software version, let me know what it is then I make a new one for you and upload here.

First its an unlocked bootloader, you didn't tell us about. Now its s-off, that you didn't tell us about.
I already thought of the method to flash TWRP by zip with SD card method; but realized that you need s-off to do so.
When someone asks how to root, and doesn't give any details; the assumption I would make is that the phone is not previously modified.
I assume the phone was modified by a previous owner? Again, a detail that should have been supplied from the beginning.

I'm sorry It escaped my mind to tell all of this. I actually modified the phone myself. It was a brand new then, I'm the first owner.
Do I just need to flash superuser through hboot recovery now?

If you already have TWRP 2.8.7.0 - don't accept root offer by that TWRP version (won't work on Marshmallow) but download the latest SuperSU zip and install it in recovery.

If you wish to update the TWRP to version 3.0.2-0 or later, just download the TWRP.img then in current TWRP you can select Install and select image then select the TWRP.img and select recovery then install.

I didn't say the TWRP won't accept root offer .. I said you don't accept root offered by TWRP because that SuperSU offered by TWRP is old version and won't work on Marshmallow.

You don't really read what I already posted before. I gave you two options earlier.
1. If you need the flashable zip - you need to give me your OS no.
or
2. Put the downloaded TWRP.img on root of your sdcard. In TWRP select install, below you'll see menu install images, select that, then browse to your downloaded TWRP.img then install. It will ask that image is for recovery or boot, select recovery .. install, done.
