random apps magically installed - Note 7 Questions & Answers

I am running the latest build for this phone 6.01_0013. last night I turned my phone off. this morning when I turned my phone on i noticed about 15 new apps were magically installed. these are not apps I have ever used in the past nor do i ever recall ever using them yet they were installed on my phone
the apps I clearly remember were
Uber
Napster
Draft Kings
iweather
kid zone
family tracker
I went through and uninstalled them all but im curious why these installed themselves. has this happened to anybody else?

One way this could happen is if someone were logged into your Google account and installed these apps from a desktop browser at play.google.com. Maybe time to change your password?

Sound like Sprint? Remember seeing most if not all on the Note7 when I had it.

change your google account password ASAP

and enable 2 step verification.

i did change my pass word just now. i just checked my google activity and didnt see anything out of the normal from last night till today. i guess i will see if it occurs again

The apps listed look like typical carrier bloat to me rather something that was a result of a hacked password. It was good advice to change your password but I'm wondering if you got an update pushed and the apps were part of the payload.

[Q] Looking for App to secure delete or shred old files

I'm looking for an app to automatically and securely wipe previusly deleted data from my phone. Preferably when its idle and sitting in the background.
When I get rid of my phone, I don't want anyone to be able to recover my sensitive data such as my emails, and my text messages. It could be a little embarassing.
I've tried SHREDroid for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus but it crashes everytime I start it. Does anyone know of other available options?
The difficulty for someone to recover your old files (if even possible) is not worth the time.. You really shouldn't worry because your emails are gone when you remove your account, and if you delete a text it is gone. I think the only thing you have to worry about is your Google login data, and even that is more trouble than it's worth to recover (unless someone really hates you) and even then 99% of potential buyers probably don't even know it is possible (or care).
I'm not sure this is entirely true. Here's my example: I have a Verizon HTC Thunderbolt that I have been using since Dec '11. I wanted to make a back up of my text messages, so that I could restore them to me new phone.
I downloaded an SMS backup from the Play market, entered my gmail credentials to store my SMS and when I checked the next morning, I had over +8000 backed up SMS messages. I was curious, and looked through to see what was somehow restored. I have routinely kept my text inbox tidy because it feels slower when one thread has over 2000 messages.
This is what prompted me to search for an answer.

What app? I will give it a go as well, but I do not believe the phone keeps the deleted texts. Could be wrong though.

The app I'm talking about is SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync

Hotmail calendar and contacts disappear

Hi,
Yesterday the weirdest thing happened on my JB GNex for the first time.
My hotmail contacts and calendar entries have disappeared. Email is fine and using the stock email client with stock OS and unrooted International GSM version phone.
Anyone else experienced this & managed to find a fix?
PS. Temporarily managed to fix by going to settings/apps and clearing the data but next morning all disappear again...

well my girl friend had the same problem on her Galaxy nexus,
and every time i had to remove the Hotmail account and then add it again for the contacts to appear.
but it kept happening to her phone and it never happened to mine.
but after 2 months of this SH*T i decided to add her account to my phone so i'll have her contacts if they disappear and there is something urgent.
so i did add her Hotmail, and after 12hours this SH*T started happening to me too, even when i totally removed her account and mine.
it happens twice everyday.
the only thing i wanna do now is not just restore the phone to default settings, but totally flash a new firmware and clear all cache and try again but i have a lot on my phone to backup.
Wow that's pretty crap - temporarily, I cleared the cache/data under settings/apps which forces the contacts to reappear then did a local export and now I'm importing them at least once or twice a day...its the lamest work around ever if your workaround does work can you let me know pls?

Me Three
I'm (not) glad to see others are having this problem too.
I may be in the wrong thread running a Galaxy S2, but this recently started happening to me. I thought it was a combination of new ROM/Kernel (recently switched to Siyah 3.3.d) but have had this same problem with CyanogenMod 9 on both the Kernel they ship as well as Siyah. With Siyah running with Dual Boot and just a single ROM.
Clearing App data for Calendar, Calendar Storage, Contacts, Contacts Storage sometimes helps, but this is getting really annoying.
Does anyone know what the root cause is? I've considered going back to Stock Carrier ROM just to see if this keeps up. I've gone back to backups from weeks ago (when I don't think this was happening) and it now happens. Don't know what else to try.
Hey,
i totally restored to 4.1.1 locked back the phone just in case, and it still happened.
then i unlocked, restored to 4.0.4, no rooting, and it still happen.
i think my hotmail account got "infected" when i added my girlfriend's account.
anyone please help.
anyone has this problem with google mail ?

I've been having this issue too - from searching for answers it appears to be a bug with hotmail.
Some people have reported having success with changing the server to debug-m.hotmail.com, or xxx-m.hotmail.com (where xxx is the three letter server code assigned to your hotmail account). Neither of these solutions has worked for me.
I'd love to know what else people have tried.
I habe exactly the same Problem. Habe also tried setting up a different Server. Anyone Wirth a fix?

OMG.
Thank you guys SOOO much for putting this up. I thought it was just me!!!! I was about to post a thread of my own on this!
Yes, I've been having this issue all of last week. I thought it was my phone and or ROM configs. I can confirm that it's happening on all ICS ROMs. I tried 10 different ROMs, all 100% clean installs. As a matter of fact, I just finished loading Paranoid Android ROM, which is a JB ROM, in hopes that it resolves it.
My Hotmail account is set up as an Exchange account. Randomly, out of nowhere, all contacts, calendars, and emails are cleared, and it has to redownload itself. This is potentially disastrous as I depend very heavily on my Hotmail calendar.
Does anyone have any idea what's happening and what we can do to solve it?
---------- Post added at 05:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:33 PM ----------
After much research, it seems that this is a huge problem with Hotmail that started occurring mid May. I still haven't seen a concrete response from Microsoft regarding this issue.
Last night I deleted the email account under the stock email app and downloaded the free hotmail app from the app store...so far the contacts are intact ...if they disappear again I will update my post.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
OK they disappeared again, apparently the Google settings have nothing to do with this, its definitely Hotmail.
So i temporarily imported my contacts and switched to gmail it was easy because i already use Google calendar i only use Hotmail for email and contacts.
I already tried switching the m.hotmail.com server but i read that some hotmail users where switched to new servers, so maybe this is the problem.

I have seen this happening on my wive's, brother's and my Galaxy Nexus.
All of us have updated to JB.
I have solved this issue with exporting my Live-contacts and importing them to my Google Account.
I will use my Galaxy S3 from now on and my wife wife asked for a new phone, she's more impatient but will get the S3 now anyway.
I think Google does not like Microsoft anymore due to latest lawsuit results.
Anywho I blame Jellbean. :crying:

I can confirm that this is a problem on all ICS/JB ROMs and is therefor not related to a ROM.
now suddenly even my calender items disappeared as well - this is getting really annoying now - will export/import them to google again until MS has sorted this out. anyone reported this already in a MS forum or blog? if not maybe we should do that.
I'm having the same issue here. I was having the issue with the stock ICS ROM on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I rooted and flashed the BB Jelly Bean ROM but the problem is still happening. When I delete the account and add it back it syncs. But then the next day the contacts disappear. When I create the account I put in m.hotmail.com. But the next day when I look it says col-m.hotmail.com. I don't think this is the issue, but I also saw comments to try changing to this. It seems to be happening automatically.
Anyway, I noticed that when I go into Hotmail and edit a contact and save it, it syncs. I don't know how long that contact will stay on my phone. So it seems to me that it could be related to identifiying which contacts to synch. I tried changing the synch frequency but that didn't work either.
Does anyone know which Microsoft Hotmail forum we should post this?
- I installed the Hotmail Microsoft + 7 app. I now have my contacts again. I'm not sure if this will work long term. I tried using the app and it crashed, so I plan on continue to use the built in Android mail app. But hopefully the Microsoft app will allow me to synch my contacts. If this doesn't work, I think I'll import them into Google to have as a backup copy.

I've had the app since last night and for me all contacts and calendar entries have stayed put and not disappeared once. I will stick with the app for a while but would like to go back to stock app if/when fixed.

I posted my issue on answers.Microsoft forum. The only response I got was to install the Microsoft App. I also would like the stock android app to get fixed, but I'm not sure if the issue is with Android or Microsoft.
I'm not able to provide a link:
•To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages. After approximately 10 posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thank you for understanding!
Same problem on stock 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus
I've got the same problem too on the official stock 4.1.1 Jellybean update. My contacts and calendar go completely missing and removing/adding the account only makes it work for a day or so and then it disappears again. Email still syncs fine.
As someone reported in this thread Hotmail is still working fine with their iPhone, and it is working fine with my Windows Phone... I'm pretty sure this is Google's fault. It makes my phone near useless, that's for sure.
This better get fixed soon! If someone finds or hears about a fix, post it here and let everyone know!

[Solved] MobileLife Contacts. Ugh...

I got my new phone yesterday and signed into my google account. No problem, I always store all my contacts with Google. However, I am going in to the contacts list to select my mom "Mom" and call her. The caller id that shows on my screen says "Gram" which is what my daughter calls her. This is similar for all our family members. However, when I go into the menu on my contacts, I can uncheck MobileLife contact sync, but they stay the same. I tried to long press on MobileLife Contacts and delete that (because for some odd reason they're my daughters! Why? I have a brand new SIM in a brand new phone...) it says I can't because some of my apps need it, and I could master reset to do this.
I don't recall ever having logged into any Samsung account, and even if I did, I shouldn't have my daughter's contacts, right?
I've chatted in and called TMO about it today and all they do is send me an email linking me to the MobileLife info on their site. I'm not seeing anything telling me how to get rid of them.
Any advice?
MobileLife is Tmobile bloatware, not Samsungs in case you need to know.
Make sure auto sync is off first. Then in Settings go into App Manager and find mobile life under the all tab and clear data and cache. Then if able press disable. It will no longer be in your accounts and sync menu.
I am not sure which apps this one affects, so back up data first, or you can try to disable the app without clearing data first.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if this will help but please try it. In contacts hit the menu button and scroll down to "contacts to display" and see if switching it to google or phone (or w.e else) helps. I know it solved my issue of having every person I've ever mailed in my life showing up :good:

Yes, I discovered it was TMo. Frustrated me that I called in and chatted in and neither way yielded any results. Good stinking gravy.
And thank you! That seems to have worked. I haven't received or made any calls to anyone who had my daughter's information, but that MobileLife symbol is no longer next to those contacts. Thank you so much.
The nerd in me is still very, very curious as to how my daughter's contacts got into my list. We did use to have My Faves, but I'm still wondering how her contacts became mine. It's a mystery.

Oh yes, this is excellent advice. I had already done that, hoping it would help and it didn't. But...this saves so much scrolling through all that nonsense.
I just simply dragged the app into app info, and disabled it.
That's it.

To the best of my knowledge, MobileLife Contacts app cannot be disabled from App Manager unless Customization Settings Provider is also disabled due to dependencies. However, I am not 100% sure if the latter is a part of stock Android or a part of HTC Sense.
Anyway, here are the directions for how to disable MobileLife Contacts on an Android/HTC Sense phone:
1stopit.blogspot.com/2012/09/mobilelife-contacts-finally-disabled.html
Even if on stock Android it is slightly different, which I cannot verify, the general idea should still be the same.
Hope it helps.

Keep getting an error on the play store HELP!

This has been going on since the beginning of December. Every time I try to buy anything from the market I get an error that it couldnt be processed and to please try again. Ive changed to different roms, cleared the cache from the store, seriously googled it and ive called google 5 times. Each time a speak to a google rep they tell me that they don't what it could be and that they'll forward my problem to a technician and they'll contact me within 2 days but then I never hear from any one for over a week hence calling like 5 times.
The only thing they told me to do was to verify my wallet and log in thru a computer which I did and updated my info. And im not using a card to buy stuff im using google credit.
Has anyone experienced this?? Is there someone else from google I can contact? Any help is appreciated

Go to your pc. Go to play.google.com and buy it there then install it to your phone from pc. If purchade worked it shouod say purchased on phone play store. Try that. This will narrow down where the problem is.
Shhot try play.google.com in your mobile browser and stay in the browser.
Edit: thought...
Are you on 2 google accounts? If so is the right account selected in the play store with the money.

[Q] How do I stop "week starts on" from changing back to default?

You know in the calendar app, there is a setting (week starts on) which is default to your local time zone. However I have my device set to US because I like it better in English, but I like my weeks to start on monday, because that is the local setting here in the Netherlands. Since I had my N2 I think I changed back the setting at least 100 times. It resets to local default! And that is really annoying. The strange thing is, I have no clue what causes it. Sometimes it stays good for a day, sometimes for 2 weeks. I just never know.
I use the stock google calendar app, and change it there, and I also change it in S planner which I don't use. However both of them change back at some point.
Does anybody have a clue what's wrong here?
So nobody knows?
Try turning off location services, see if it changes back.

Tried setting it to UK? The language is called English for a reason you know
I just found out, ALL my calendar settings are changed back to stock when it does this, so it's not just the locale default thing, for instance show week numbers gets unchecked as well, and the default reminder time gets set back to 15 minutes while I want it at 60.
So I wonder what it is, guess not the regional thing?
Oh and also, I can't set my phone to UK, punctuation and everything is totally wrong for me then.
Ideas: try creating a new en-NL locale.
Also try fiddling with Xposed app settings to put only the calendar app in Dutch.

FYI: I fixed the problem myself.
I was using google calendar, and not S-planner. I changed the settings in both, but both changed back at some point.
Then I disabled S-planner altogether in the app manager, and only google calendar is now available. That fixed the problem.
