There is currently no 'free' way of sim unlocking your device if you hang around long enough someone may write a program to do it but you may be waiting a while. Quite a few members have stated the unlock code can be obtained over ebay within 2 hours for around £9 which is a good price. You could also contact your carrier and tell them you want to take your phone abroad and use a different sim card in it while you are away to save costs. Sometimes they will unlock it for free.

I read something on twitter from three uk which said only their first batch of gn were unlocked and all others will be carrier locked. Three charge to unlock their phones whether still in contract with them or not.

got mine unlocked from o2 for free, filled in a form on their site and they emailed me the unlock code
just bought a SIM unlock code from here for £5
instant delivery, works perfectly. awesome
a warning about sim unlock: I got my nexus today from vodafone spain and as expected it was locked. I got an unlock code from ebay and it worked like a charm.
But, I like to play with new phones first, then restore defaults and set everything up the way I want it. The thing is, the galaxy nexus doesn't remember the network unlock code between factory resets, at least mine doesn't (yakju, came with ITL41F).
The codes work, but you may need yours again, so don't throw the number away
any code for three? im waiting the three to give me the code, about 2 weeks now
Hello Mark, is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus an universal phone? Can I use the unlocked version with LTE carriers in the future? I am in US and Verizon is the only LTE carrier I was wondering about using T-Mobile (HSPS technology) or wait for Sprint (my current carrier). I live in USA but I am thinking about moving to Japan so I wonder if I should just wait and maybe I will need to get one in Japan with one of their carriers... Also I love the forums and it is all great, but is there an IRC room for this questions as well?
Thank you in advance,

The GSM version can be purchased unlocked and used on any GSM carrier with their supplied SIM card. The GSM frequencies are listed for the Galaxy Nexus and they cover the majority of GSM international and US domestic carriers.
The LTE version, as far as we've heard, is only for Verizon in the US. Not sure what LTE technologies other carriers in other countries are using.
If you're interested in having an international capable version of the deivce, the GSM version is currently your best option.
Hope that helps!
Hi,
I would also like to purchase such a code, but how ist it with OTA updates? Still avialable?
How would it be if I later root my phone and put on a custom rom? Will it be still unlocked.
or
cant I just put on a custom rom, to sim-unlock the phone and save those costs?
Sorry for the noob questions.
Thanks

Custom Roms cannot sim unlock your phone as it isnt part of the system.
Flashing an OTA update or a custom rom will not affect your phone if you have sim unlocked it with a code.
MArk.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I have contacted my carrier (A1 Austria) and complained about the simlock. To make a long story short, they finally gave me the simunlock pin.
But recently I unlocked the bootlader and the unlock was wiped so I needed to reenter the pin. After I reflashed the original rom (back to stock) the sim was locked again.
And the most strange thing happened today. I just restarted the phone today (as every day) and the sim was locked again. So reentered the pin to unlock.
My question now, can it be that the simumlock pin they have provided me is not correctly working or is this a normal behaviour or a bug?
Br, Avi
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That appears to be normal behaviour.
What are your guys' thoughts about a unlocked/hacked bootloader on the htc m9? I want to get the m9 as soon as it comes out but I want it to have custom recoveries and such!
Not sure how anyone would really know that at it this point buddy.

haha I agree. Just asking for predictions I guess. Like people predicted that the s5 would have locked tight bootloader. Things might be different on the htc side though.
The rumor is that HTC's flagship for next year is codenamed "Hima" rather than M9. As to whether or not it'll be unlockable, it's really hard to say this early on.
I bet it will be unlockable since the other carrier versions will probably be able to be unlocked through htc dev, so my thoughts are yes. I bet within weeks of being released it will be cracked maybe even sooner. Just like the previous versions were, be nice if htc would accidently let it out with nothing ever leading back to them, because it would make a lot of customers happy and customers are who buy their phones verizon may sell them but its the buyers that control how many phones htc sells. Happy buyers = htc making a lot of $$$$
Well dev edition will of course have an unlocked bootloader by default.. I think most other carriers will be unlockable at htcdev like the m7 and m8 have been.. as for verizon, pretty sure unless an exploit is found the best they can hope for is root and thats it.

When I tested the Desire 612, the bootloader was unlocked and the device S-OFF, I just couldn't flash a custom recovery because there weren't any devices out there. (That didn't keep me from trying, and ultimately bricking my test device just before we were supposed to send them back.)
You have to know the partition sizes and addresses before you can mess with this stuff.
I'm holding out for an unlocked bootloader on EVERY future phone, not just the M9. Without TWRP, root and custom roms you might as well give up on life and get an iphone.
Upleaks postet some info about the bootloader, but it doesn't reveal much at this point..

I guess you can unlock with HTC dev website.
But I'm hoping for S-OFF

Sad
HTCdev has been allowing unlocked bootloaders for HTC's latest flagships. So hopefully they will keep going with that, I can't see why they wouldn't keep on with that trend.
They better allow the unlock via HTC-dev, this is currently one of the coolest things about HTC. If I can't unlock the bootloader, I'll be much happier sticking with my M8 or waiting for the next device with an easy bootloader unlock.
All HTC devices made after 2011 have unlockable bootloaders, which can be unlocked via HTCDev.com. However, you probably won't get a custom recovery at launch.

True, but those who buy ATT/Verizon phones must know the bootloader is locked and they usually pay less for subsidized & nobbled hardware. IMHO they deserve locked bootloaders for supporting ATT/VZW.
It seems like all of the of the carriers have released the LG G4 locked to the carrier, but where can I purchase it unlocked, so that I can switch between carriers?
Does Best Buy sell it unlocked?
I'm in South Florida, USA.
Thank you.
Best place so far, and several have got them from this seller on ebay here at XDA

He is selling the Asian version.
The only one with an unlockable bootloader (right now) is the EU version. (if that matters to you)
I suppose I'm confused about the differences. I'd like to be able to root/unlock the bootloader - which will allow me to install custom ROMs/modifications?
But my main concern at the moment is being able to switch carriers - for example from Sprint to T-Mobile.
I dont think you can go from sprint to t-mobile. Sprint is CDMA and T-Mobile is GSM
Also good to know the 815 isnt universal, had no idea. WAY to many SKUs on this phone!!
The Asian version at that link will run on T-Mobile, AT&T or any other GSM provider just fine. It won't run on Sprint or Verizon.
I have an unlock one up gor sale on swappa. Check for Fidelio_o
No one is selling an unlocked version. An unlock is not even available (for the US variants).
I got the unlocked version from that eBay listing. Using it on AT&T. Love it.
Does 815 have quick charging?
Does anyone know if 815 model comes with quick charging?

B&H Photo will have them around June 20. $629 for non-leather, $699 for leather.

That's one of the questions I also have. If I buy the unlocked version will it be compatible with both AT&T & T-Mobile. And by compatible I mean will I get full 4G LTE speeds while using on either carrier. I currently have a unlocked branded T-Mobile HTC One M8 but I don't get AT&T's LTE when I put in one of their SIM cards.

It's not an AT&T branded model that was unlocked after purchase. It's a factory unlocked model. As in, not carrier branded, was never locked to begin with so didn't need to be unlocked.

Dude, I have an H815. The bootloader is not unlocked. Factory unlocked refers to the phone not being locked to a specific carrier, not the bootloader. It works on AT&T and T-Mobile and any GSM carrier I want. And I didn't have to do any unlocking myself to get it carrier unlocked. It came that way from the LG factory, hence the term "factory unlocked". LG sells this model that way. Warranty in tact.

real EU variants
Ok I know that just flicked through the thread and caught some one calling BS about not being able to buy unlocked as I bought mine direct from lg and it's unlocked, by not reading from the beginning I surmised it was about the boot loader.
I've been running on an M9 for the past two years, and with the HTC11 coming around the corner, pricing on the 10 becomes very tempting. But I might be switching carriers from AT&T to Verizon, so I need to know if there's any difference now between the phones, or if they're all 'multi-carrier' at this point. IOW, do I need to look for a specific Verizon-variant or AT&T-variant, or is there no difference anymore?
Thanks in advance!

Verizon one is a CDMA variant, it supports most but not all of the Unlocked version LTE bands. Also you're at the mercy of VZW for software updates (they haven't even updated to Nougat yet).
On the other hand, the Verizon variant works with all their network features (e.g advanced calling) out of the box. To get the Unlocked version working on the VZW network, you'd have have s-off first and flash new radios. This isn't difficult to do, but beware of the added cost of having to S-off.
So then there are, in fact, two variants - CDMA for Verizon and GSM for AT&T. Correct?

Yes but the GSM one (referred to as U.S Unlocked) is not make specifically or only for AT&T, if that's what you mean. It's sold by HTC for use on any gsm network.
I believe there is also a version from Sprint that is a CDMA variant.
Edited my original post to say the Verizon variant doesn't support all of the Unlocked version LTE bands.

So what you're saying is that the radio can operate on all bands, and I could theoretically buy a 'Verizon' model, re-flash the radio, and it becomes a fully functional AT&T model?
I'm asking, because back in the day, the radio hardware was different. Ive flashed ROM and radio combinations for my Inspire/Desire and M7. My present M9 is a bit of a disappointment, only because I'll never again buy a phone with a camera that lacks OIS. Hence my interest in the M10.
Unless, of course, the purported HTC11 us a world-beater, but truthfully, I'm not confident.

yes. You see lots of verizon users converting their unlocked to verizon or the other way round.
You just flash the HTC US Unlocked RUU, not just the radio. Supercid and set the mid to US unlocked.
You need s-off though..additionally it needs to be on Marshmallow. temp root on vzw nougat got patched and sunshine s-off won't work anymore.

Got it. I did Sunshine for my M9, and it was great. I'll wait to see what HTC does with the upcoming 11, and unless it's incredible - and worth $400 more than a NIB 10, I'll probably go with the 10 to save money and get a camera I can live with. It's hard to imagine what not having OIS can do to your pictures.

Because I'm getting closer to making a purchase, I'd like to touch on this one last time.
Since AT&T didn't carry the M10, I'm forced to look for a Verizon, Sprint or Tmobile variant. I prefer something New In Box, but it seems they're hard to come by, the best condition (and most adorable) being from Sprint.
But if I can't unlock and flash an RUU that would enable the phone to be fully functional on AT&T, it would wind up being an expensive paperweight.
So, any last assurances that this will work out no matter which variant I buy would really put my mind at ease.
Thanks again!

Hi,
I was in your situation and finally pulled the plug on Verizon variant. It came with an OS that is patched by Verizon blocking Sunshine S-OFF/Unlock. But browsing around XDA & google search, I found the steps and spent some $ to S-OFF/Unlock. Long story short, finally I ended up with HTC 10 Verizon variant converted to Developer Edition.
1) Will Verizon variant work with AT&T out of box? Yes, but LTE didn't work for me. I set bands to Global to get 4G. One thing I observed was unable to do OS update. I didn't invest much time on OS update because I was prepared to convert phone to unlocked well before purchase.
2) Which variant of HTC 10 is best? Unlocked if you can get good condition phone within budget. Else, refer point #1.

Seems the best price on FleaBay is about $430 with no warranty, but HTC has them for $499 brand new direct, probably because the Ocean is to be released in about three weeks.
I wonder if it makes sense to wait for the price to drop further, or buy now with a direct purchase in the hope of getting price protection and/or a warranty.
Does HTC include any warranty when buying from them?

be aware that it will just work on the verizon variant, when it is running marshmallow. temp root is patched on verizon when it is running nougat, means only way to s-off would be a javacard/mail in service handled by @jcase for example.
Been using Moto X (2013) for 6 years, finally decided to upgrade. As a fan of smaller phones instantly fell in love with this on amazon. Does anyone know if I can unlock it to work with a local carrier (in Azerbaijan)? Looking at question and answers on Amazon got me really confused.
Edit: Also, how much would it cost to unlock it?
Edit2: After "researching" what unlocked means (haven't used carrier plan phones ever), seems like it can get locked after an update. Does anyone have experience with the phone I linked? Also, I found this which says "T-Mobile GSM Unlocked". Wth does that mean? Is it usable worldwide/any carrier, or only with T-Mobile, or is unlocked by T-Mobile officially and is somehow more reliable or something? Sorry but I'm completely uneducated in this matter. Hope I'll get some help before it runs out of stock.
Thanks!
