N Final, Systemless Root and Tethering? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been holding off on upgrading to N.
How does it work with systemless root? I currently have systemless root working. Will it just stay, or do I need to do anything?
Also: the primary reason I rooted was to fix the f;cked up / blocked tethering in M. Is that an issue in in N? (If so Google can shove their update where the sun doesn't shine)

Really - nobody has upgraded or has any interest in systemless root?

Android Pay compatible ROMs

Hey guys, I'm currently on xtreolite deodexed v2.3, Android Pay will not work for me due to the root level access, some people have been able to get around this by disabling root in SuperSU and installing but that didn't work for me. Can those on different ROMs please try and report back? Does stock + root work?
I think you need to flash stock, install and setup pay, then root
^^ this! Above poster is right,
Actually, after rooting again android pay will not process transactions. At least mine failed today after rooting again when I tried at McDonald's.
Is it checking the KNOX counter or just the phone being rooted?
Just if it is rooted
Aren't there xposed modules to hide root?

Safetynet API tripping for systemless root?

One of the biggest reasons why I used systemless root and stock Android was so that I could use Android Pay. All was fine and dandy for the longest time, I was passing the checks regularly.
Sometime between yesterday and last week, Safetynet Playground has been telling me I failed to pass the test. When I uninstall systemless root SuperSU it goes back to green for me. This seems to indicate that Google has updated Safetynet to detect systemless root.
For those who might not know: No there was no need to disable root before using Android Pay. No, disabling it now does not help. Yes, this worked, and I've been using it for a while now.
Can anyone else confirm this for me?

I can still add cards to android pay. I used SuperSU 2.64 and removed /su/xbin today and had no issues. Just tried that app too and I passed.

Are you on 6.0.1?
And could you clarify what you mean by removing /su/xbin? I see no such folder.
There isn't a /system/su folder
There is an /su/xbin_bind folder though.
Super edit: deleted /su/xbin_bind
Y I no read SuperSU post?
I thought it wouldn't cause problems. My bad

Root + Android Pay. What does OEM Unlock do?

I rooted my phone only so I could use AdAway. So once I update the hosts file with AdAway, technically I can disable root and only enable root once a week or so to re-run AdAway and update the hosts file again correct?
So I want to use Android Pay too... I keep reading that if I disable root in SuperSU it'll work, but my Android Pay flat out rufuses to work.
Only other thing I can think of is disabling OEM Unlock. What does that even do? I'm currently running custom recovey (TWRP).
Does OEM Unlock need to remain enabled? Could that prevent Android Pay working when SuperSU root is disabled?
Thanks
If your root method modified /system/ then you will never be able to use Android Pay as it checks this. Even systemless root stopped working with the August security patch. It's why I didn't root my Note 7 when I got it because I figured this out on the 6P. Sad but true.
Is there a way to un-root and re-root quickly? I disabled root in SuperSU but it doesn't help.
All I really want to do is block ads via the host file with adaway (which is how it works right?) And I can enable root every time I want to update the ad block list.
Thanks for reply
I found a few ways to do it on other sections of this forum but they seemed tedious and I haven't really looked since the August patch flarked everything up for folks who want AP. Sorry. I wish I could answer.

Android Pay Custom Roms and Magisk

I use Android pay frequently thus so far have yet to root this device, (i did once and learned about how it wont work). At that time Magisk was just released and there were other hide root type things than just seamed too much of a hassle, (rebooting into non root mode to use android pay).
From what i have read recently that Magisk helps with this and there is also a systemless xposed, The only howto i have found on the subject is https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/guide-oneplus-3-magisk-install-android-t3433093
are there any non rooted custom roms to use in this way?
I appreciate your help I have always loved customizing my phone but the whole android pay thing sucks, if only i didn't need it.
XPosed won't be there yet if you plan to use Nougat. Only <= Marshmallow has a working XPosed up to now. But yes, Magisk is really nice, I am using it with the included root variant + ViperAudio + WIFI 40 MHz Unlock + Google Assistant enabler and all systemless. Working great on my OxygenOS 4.0.3. Due to francoKernel Google Pay does not even see the unlocked bootloader and thus works (in theory... not really of any big use in Germany yet) You just need a Custom ROM without any root OR you have to remove root by yourself. Search for unSU, a ZIP file somewhere on XDA which removed system based root by TWRP flash.

Safety Net check a problem for rooted guys

Hello!
After moving on S288 and rooting my device, I realised that I no longer pass Safetynet. I, currently rooted with Chainfire's SuperSU + Magisk, with the feature from Magisk, Magisk Hide I cannot bypass the safetynet checker. Also as I seem to realise, it is bypassed by an unlocked bootloader, which I'm wondering if we lock again if it will pass.
This safetynet thing doesn't allow me to log into Snapchat and doesn't allow me to use some apps to pay via NFC, which drives me nuts.
I'll try locking the bootloader again and then seeing if that fixes the issue.
Any suggestions are welcome!
