a question about kernel flashing - Xperia Z5 Premium Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to ask that if I want to flash a new kernel, do I need to wipe out my user data? Or I can keep my user data and just flash another kernel.

NO. just select kernel and keep the rest unchanged ( that is for KERNEL.sin / original kernel from ftf files)

Removing a Kernel

I have a quick question I cant seem to find the answer too. How do you remove a Kernel that you flashed to your phone?
and do I have to Wipe Cache, Dalvich or anything like that?
Thanks
Not exactly sure what you are asking, but here it goes!
If you flashed a custom kernel, and want to revert back to the previous kernel you had you could:
1. NAND restore to the backup you should have applied before flashing the new kernel
-or-
2. Download and flash the kernel of your choice to replace the current kernel.
You cannot "remove" a kernel that has been applied to your device, only replace.
Thanks for that info. I just need to replace the one I have so I will find what I want then just flash over it.
Someone said you could use Rom Manager and choose stock kernel but I didnt see that in my unpaid version..

if you dont have the original kernel you also can wipe cache and dalvik twice each one and then flash your rom again

[Q] Custom Roms / Kernel Questions

I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-1747) that is running stock with root.
I have rooted my phone using the samsung toolkit located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
Since that toolkit flashed a CWM Based recovery I have installed ROM Manager and flashed CWM Recovery version 6.0.1.2
My questions are..
- with my current setup.. am I technically running the "Stock" samsung kernel?
- why would you want to flash a different kernel to your phone?
- and is it necessary to flash a different kernel in order to use certain custom roms?
- At first I was leaning towards flashing CM10 nightly but the more I look at it.. I want to flash PARANOIDANDROID 2.22 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818199
Is this rom fully compatible with my AT&T phone? and since i'm running stock with root, do I need to do anything special before flashing this rom? Factory reset? Wipe Data? I've already made a full nandroid backup.
Thank you!

- why would you want to flash a different kernel to your phone? Different kernels do different things.. some have better batter life.. some let you OC and UC..
- and is it necessary to flash a different kernel in order to use certain custom roms?Well sometimes.. Well technically.. most kernels will work with most of the ROMS out there.. as long as you stay withing your phones threads.. But some ROMs have a kernal with them.. and some ROMS you need to flash your own kernel..

Thank you for the reply.
On the rom i'm wanting to flash for my SGH-i747 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818199
The steps for flashing are as follows:
CWM: Install Zip: Rom: Download Here Make sure the file you download is PA-2.22-d2att.zip
CWM: Install Zip: Gapps: Download (These are the new ones)
CWM: Wipe Data/Factory Reset
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot and edit your Apps Dpi & Layout under Settings/Paranoid Settings - DO NOT RESTORE YOUR OLD PROPERTIES FOR NOW
Would i need to wipe data, factory reset, then also wipe dalvik cache BEFORE I install the rom and gapps since i'm running stock with root?
Thank you
i'm also reading that for paranoidandroid you must first flash CM10 then flash paranoid.. is this accurate?
umm.. not sure where you saw that you need to flash a CM rom before flashing the paranoid ROM..
I believe the Paranoid rom is based off CM
The instruction on the link you have, in my opinion, is wrong..
The way that i flash my roms is...
Wipe data/factory reset..
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Format/Data
Fomat/System ( i think deletes backups) only do in emergency.aka optional step
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps.
THATS IT
Some people will wipe cache afer flashing a rom..
But if you wipe data/factory reset i believe deletes the ROM...

If you are already running CM10 then you don't need to wipe Cache. Just dalvik and data. Im pretty sure thats what was confusing, since this is based off of CM10.

yeah, I just keep reading and reading.. probably making this out to be more difficult than it really is just don't want to end up with a brick or anything.
I'm already on stock + root + latest CWM so I just need to put the files on my phone and flash but I believe these are the steps i need to take:
1- Download ROM and Gapps to internal sd card
2- Boot phone into recovery
3- WIPE Cache/Delvik/Data factory reset> Mounts and Storage- format system
4- Flash ROM and Gapps

[Q] rom and kernel

A few questions....
1) lets say if i apply [KERNEL][CM10][3.0.66]Yoon.Kernel on arco's CM10 a6... and if i flash a new or update a new rom will the existing kernel that I've applied be gone? Do I need to wipe data and factory reset or apply fix permission during this process?
2) If I wan to change from this [Kernel][CM10][3.0.66] Skull Kernel to [KERNEL][CM10][3.0.66]Yoon.Kernel on arco's CM10 a6. how to change? Just simply flash it away?

I think there will be no problem with changing kernel, i have tried it before by just clearing cache and dalvik cache and no problem occured. but I advise you to do a pristine intall every change, just to be sure you remove files from your previous version.
1. you have to reflash the kernel because upgrading ROM replace the kernel to the ROM's kernel
2. simply flash it

Question about kernel

Hello!
I need do reinstall my rom (CM9) after instal a new kernel?
And how I install a new kernel?
I want to update the kernel to the Yoon Kernel ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2053266 ), but how I do it? I don't understand how to do this, what files I have to download...
Tks!
You dont need to reflash the rom after flashing the kernel. Just download the zip file from the thread and flash/install it in clockworkmod (CWM) recovery. Clear cache and dalvik chache after that then reboot. You might want to reboot to recovery again and fix permission if needed.
That all..
thanks
help me overclock, how to edit kernel for that?

[Q] A little help here

So i'm a newbie here. I've only installed one custom rom so far. I have an R800i with unlocked bootloader, DoomKernel v14 and Auroraplay v0.8. The thing is I want to install Lupus GBv8 kernel and the newest AuroraPlay, but i'm not sure what the steps are. Do i have to reinstall the original .ftf again then flash the kernel in fastboot and then the ROM?

That's the way to clean install (Recommended by me @@!)
Ỏ u can just flash the kernel. Then boot into recovery, and wipe everything. Last, flash the ROM
Flash firmware that have unlocked vendor partition, so you can have 600MB data partition (and you should do only once)
Power off, flash kernel without booting to OS, wipe data and system, and install new rom.
