I've just purchased a brand new G4 (manufacturing date is May 2016) and it runs stock android 6.0 (V20d). When tested with GPS test (app), it will lose signal every few seconds (like it restarts or something). Is this normal?
Besides, the gps icon shows up in grey randomly in the notification area without running any app which uses gps, or if I quit an app which uses GPS (such as Waze), the Icon will remain on the notification bar for additional minute or two. I already tried to factory reset the device but the behavior is the same.
Any ideas?
No one?
I had this issue with a refurbished phone from my carrier. I think the issue cropped up after I restored system apps/data with Titanium Backup. After KDZing the phone several times, I was able to fix it by upgrading to Marshmallow and then revert back to Lollipop.
Please note I do not recommend this unless you are sure you can rollback from MM and not get bricked.

Have you tried with HERE WeGo?
Nope, just want to make sure that the gps isn't faulty (hardware-wise), because if I understand correctly, the gps was fine with lollipop and LG kind of ruined it after switching to Marshmallow and since I'm not willing to force downgrade, the only solution is wait for a 6.0.1 based stock release or change phone.
My gps works very fast, much better than in my old samsung s3. I would say return the phone while under warranty.

Is it running stock? What version?
I am running rooted stock 20D android 6.0.
Interesting... I tried to downgrade to 5.1.1 (V10K) using a KDZ file and LGUP - same behavior.
Based on CPU-Z My SOC revision is r0p3, hardware revision is "p1" (in the "device" tab) ; if you have the same board then perhaps my GPS is indeed defective. Otherwise I'll need to compare my g4 to another one which uses the same hardware.
Check if it's faulty with Android codes .
From http://mobilespecs.net/phone/codes/LG/LG_G4.html:
*#*#1472365#*#* - GPS test
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.
*#*#1575#*#* - For a more advanced GPS test
Thanks,
The first code leads to this screen ; non of these options are gps related.

If you just bought it and you can take it back to where you bought it from I would suggest doing so. If that was a shop and they have more LG G4 then you can go there and compare the GPS test results. It does sound like faulty GPS chip. Never had problems with mine.
Much obliged, folks. I'll see what I can do.
I had similar problem on a brand new phone, called LG and they took in for repair. Took about a week for repair
I wouldn't settle for repair in case of a brand new device. Exchange is the only viable solution.
The GPS problems were the #1 reason I ditched my G4 in less than 3 months. Over a minute to lock to GPS. Then I would lose it in the middle of navigation, constantly. Battery life sucked, the power button was flaky, the vibrate feature was almost completely useless (and because of that I was constantly missing calls). Really the only redeeming features were the screen and the camera. It's not just your device that has GPS problems. Ditch that thing while you still can. Easily the worst smartphone I have ever owned. There is literally nothing you can do to make that GPS better, not even in Device Only mode with high accuracy.

hit return and press Delete GPS Data
then Hit Get Position Test
I got fix in 2/3 seconds on my device.
Tell me if it worked for you ... I'll make driving tests this afternoon
You joking? Enabling sky hook has been posted about a billion times already.
And until you've done a driving session your results mean nothing.
I can't get a lock if I change the other settings you've posted.

No it makes no difference for me. I get a fast fix (I did before this anyway), but it's useless when driving. Drops the signal every few seconds (still JF3, but will test JG5 now that JF3 is finally out).
What improved mine a little bit, is to delete secgps.conf from /data/gps . It's the file that gets created when you fiddle around with those settings in the test mode. Samsung messed something up with their default values I think. If you switch your phone off and on, the file gets recreated with the default values, which are different now, and make more sense...

well ... I'm back from a short driving test ... except for the first 100m everything is fine ... don't get any signal loss or wrong street ...
seems exactly the same to me b ut my gps has alweasy been spot on on newer firmwares anyway
For me with skyhook on only it also works perfectly, no problems at all when driving. What i did notice is that when you cannot get a fix, closing all applications with a task killer works. After killing i get a fix right away again.
well its work with me fine i have new frimware XJG5
well ... I came back from a long test drive, and it's not very accurate after all ... F**K

what if the problem with the GPS is hardware based? Do you think samsung will admit it and recall all the sets to be repaired? I dont think so....
Well, how about contacting official samsung support. I open'd a ticket myself on saturday, and so should do everyone. The only way to get this problem solved is to put pressure on samsung. It's important to contact some famous websites and tell them, that there are some issues about the galaxy s and than lets see. It worked with the iPhone so it will work with i9000.

How did you contact them? I sent a web support request, submitted images and results from GPS Test, and a log from the GPS, and provided links to a video showing the failures. I also gave my work details since I'm an engineer associated with a number of their products..... 3 days later they responded with instructions on how to run Google Maps.
I also pinged engadget to see if I could get them to pick up the story, but we'd need more people doing that to get them to take notice.
i contacted support hotline, after serveral calls and waiting for 4 days, they made up an engineering ticket to get me the hw specs of the gps module(there are no gps problems known in germany!). They wanted me to sent back my phone to a service dealer, but i said, that that probably won't solve the problem.
i also informed heise.de (largest german it portal) about the gps problems. So lets wait whats coming up next.

yes, maybe it's hw related and it will never work with the galaxy s. thats no problem for me. i'll change it and buy a different phone. but i want a clear statement from samsung. thats what i can expect for 450€.
gps navigation is a warranted characteristics on their website and that gives you powerfull righty in germany.
I honestly dont belive there is a hardware problem as mine locks real quick,is as accuate as any garmin or navman ive used and hasnt once lost lock in the car,and ive been out in very rainy weather.I can only vouch fpr co pilot as its the only gps program ive got but its lock is flawless.
@sammy
please be so kind let me know, whats the max number of satellites your sgs has in sight, to how many it can connect and whats the max snr using GPS Test.
standing on a bridge with no trees or buildings around, my sgs is only capable of tracking 8 satellites, max locks was 6 yesterday (but only for a second, normaly 5 locks) and the max snr is below 40. using xxjf3 and any of the settings mentioned here or elsewhere.
nearly every other GPS module has >12 channels and can lock more satellites the same time with a higher snr than sgs. afaik there is no *navigation* system with less then 12 channels.
Hello
I've got a problem with my PX5 HU
MCU: MTCE_LM_V3.44_1
version without physical buttons (except 2 knobs) for Alfa Romeo 159
It's freeze very often with annoying sound-loop. When press the button in the reset hole sound-loop quit but HU is not restarting (screen is still on and no response) so I have to stop a car to make it turn on. So it's make me nuts.
I noticed some things:
1. Temperature of CPU is very high. Absolutely no stress - some music or radio on and connected phone (bluetooth + wifi) and temp is 60-70 C. When open for example GMaps its go to over 90 C.
BUT no laggy, no message about exceeded temp and system shutting down - so symptoms is different to "heat issue" thread.
2. I think it's freeze when "something going on" and it's no matter what it will be - for example in the GMaps it will be just before voice command. But it could be also incoming call via BT or regular touch the screen.
When I disconnect everything and use HU only just as regular radio everything seems to be fine.
Head unit is on warranty but I want send it back to China only in cases that is serious hardware issue.
When it will be software - i will try some custom roms.
Or when it will be hardware but only heat issue I will try add some heatsink.
Anybody have the similar problem? Is that software or hardware issue?
Hi,
I had very same random freezing issues a while ago. I think this is related to the Android build version. I updated mine to the latest Android 9 build and since then everything is working fine. No freezing at all. My unit is also a PX5 with MX type MCU. Please look at the attached picture for more information.

Many people installed heatsink and/or fan to solve freezing problems (most of them related to excessive temperature).
I would ask seller/manufacturer to violate the seal for a heatsink in order to solve the high temperature issues and to check if solve the freezing issue....and if not to be allowed to send it back as warranty protection

My MCU is LM, not MX (of course I know I can install ROM of other manufacturer). The reason I haven't try it yet is my current version is not available to download (in the case it will not help and have to send back to seller I was afraid they can reject varranty becouse different ROM is installed).
But I you had similar issue I need to try.

I'm glad to hear that. I thought the symptom of heat issue is laggy system and shutting down (in the right way, not freezes) - my HU works quite smooth even before freeze.
EDIT:
I installed custom ROM - Hal9k Mod (BTW it's great) and I can definitely say - that was the solution. No single freeze during very long trip (2 x 15h).

The seller of this device, ZWNAV (https://www.aliexpress.com/store/2963108) has decided not to respond to my request to fix or replace the device. Total lack of trust, I would not recommend to anyone. Aliexpress did also nothing to help me, another lesson learned to avoid this "Amazon" wannabe.
Sorry If there's already some talks about that on different topics, but I find easier to talk about this latest release on a centralised one.
My findings are that Oplus updated the gamebar which now takes more onscreen space, but is now easier to use
The second one is a real thermal behavior change : I used to flash Omega Kernel on 11.2.5.5 and quickly the o+ 9Pro stabilized under 42/43°C . On the latest OOs build with stock kernel, I'm now @ 37-38°C after 30 min of playing the same game. 5-6 degres gained is pretty a good upgrade.
I'll check what are the photo behavior changes as I've done few reproductible raw photos to test, and see how the white balance upgrades are this week end

I deeply can't say that comparing two different iteration of kernel. But it appears to me O+ finally made some progress concerning power and heat behaviour.
I will for sure flash omega kernel as I did with every releases, but I'm happy to see that vanilla stock kernel is working better than ever

I'm running Omega, but I was running omega before so although I'm sure Omega helps battery, it was still not great before the update. The new changes he made to reduce watermarking may have been a factor, and I also disabled RAM optimization in Oneplus settings which I'm pretty sure helped.

The notification thing is most likely due to Oneplus's "Intelligent control" for battery saving. It may be "optimizing power usage" too aggressively for your apps. Go to the power settings for each app with the issue individually and change it to "do not optimize" to ensure you get notifications on time
Hello,
this morning I got a message about a new system update 62.1.A.0.587, 313.5MB.
By searching the web I found no info related to this update, which is somehow strange.
I guess it could contain fixes for the various bugs that were reported on Android 12.
However, I think I will wait a while before update my device, just to be sure...
Any news?
I updated to this new build just a few hours ago, so far no issues. I had some issues on the previous build where taking pictures through WhatsApp didn't always work, seems to be fixed now. Let me know if you want me to test something.

Here's the details, they updated the security update version to april. Google play update you could already do on previous build independently.
I've just updated to this new version and to me it looks like the display issue (green tint, crushing of black levels) is finally gone. I hope I'm not getting crazy. I'll take a closer look after work.
Anyone using Android 12 found that Wifi auto-connect is not working? I mean even if Wifi is turned off. If you enter the range for a previously connected Wifi, the phone should automatically turn on Wifi and connect to it.
It used to work in Android 11 but doesn't work anymore since upgrading to Android 12.
mmm ... maybe I'm wrong,
but for me that option allows to auto-connect to a saved WiFi network only when the WiFi is ON.
How the device could be aware if you are in range of a WiFi spot if the WiFi itself is OFF?

It's a new feature introduced in Android 11. I don't know the exact technical details but it seems to utilize the location of the phone to detect if you're near a previously connected Wifi spot.
And according to the link below, this feature was broken after Android 12 Jan update and was fixed in Mar update.
Google Pixel 6 Wi-Fi auto-connect issue persists after January update
Some Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners say that their phone does not auto-connect to their Wi-Fi even though the setting is enabled.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/...matically-connect-to-specific-wi-fi-networks/ - "Android 11 has a new toggle in the settings panel for Wi-Fi networks called 'Auto-connect,' and when it is switched off, your device won't automatically connect to the given network as soon as it is discovered."
I think it's related to location, so location must be enabled. But this is just guess, as I don't use this option and wifi is always on.
I updated yesterday, everything seems fine for now, with no evident changes with respect to the previous one.
I appreciated the fact that Sony released two updates so closer in time.
I updated yesterday as well. After 24 hours I noticed that the battery drain caused by the previous update is much better now. No other notable changes other than that

By searching the web I found no info related to this update, which is somehow strange.
I guess it could contain fixes for the various bugs that were reported on Android 12.
However, I think I will wait a while before update my device, just to be sure...
Any news?

After the last update that I wasn't happy with (pull-down menu became huge icons and having to click multiple times to turn on wifi, mobile internet etc...) I'll wait...
there are no changes in the UI
France, Italy and UK confirmed so far, no update for me though.
installing right now - T-Mobile, Czech republic
Just installed in sPain. Feels way snappier
Update done, Portuguese TPH version. Since its new ONE UI and new Android, its important to do a factory reset?

Did you do a factory Reset? If not, did you find any bug related to non reset?

Had the same issue but with Settings app
You need to wipe cache and repair apps by plugging in the phone into PC, then turn off phone and hold launch button + volume up, fixed issues for me!

for me it is very annoying - previously I used to enter my password once a week and now it happens to me several times a day because the failure to recognize my fingerprint several times forces me to use a password (and I have a long one)
I have no problems with fingerprint recognition. But since I updated 4 days ago, the fingerprint reader didn't "light up" on turned off screen several times already.
I also experienced very heavy battery drain the day after I installed the update - 35% over night, then ~15%/hour during short geocaching hike. But rebooting the phone fixed that.
Other than that, I don't really see any difference in speed/performance - I feel it's identically great as it was before.
Oh and the new "pocket detection" screen with swipe up is really annoying and difficult to unlock.
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone else lost the ability to use the cellular band selection hidden network setting - under the Call Settings menu? I'm not able to access it in Android 13. It says the app is no longer installed.
This is the menu: com.samsung.android.app.telephonyui.hiddennetworksetting.MainActivity
Update went smoothly for me, no hiccups or crashing problems after it.
Biggest problem I've had so far, like jenda.69 mentioned, is the new accidental touch protection screen, not sure why Samsung felt the need to change something when it was already working well. I could not for the life of me unlock the screen.
Other than that, I'd say everything else is pretty good. Mini stutters from OneUI 4 are fixed, like the ones that happened often in the quick settings menu. Personally I prefer the animations from OneUI 4 but I don't have a problem with the new ones either. The new clock font options are pretty slick as well.
Lastly some nitpicks; The default animated call screen is gone which is a very minor thing but I did like that gradient animation a lot and how it changed according to contact pictures. New one is pretty dull. Samsung didn't make use of the new Android 13 media player either which is kinda disappointing but I don't have too big a problem with that.
Overall a decent update. 9/10 has a little something for everyone
