The HTC One's stock browser comes with three locked bookmarks. I was wondering if there's a way to delete them without root? I've tried the bookbmark sort & backup and bookmark manager apps without any luck.

If you're OK with Chrome you can sidestep the locked bookmark issue -- I've just hidden the stock browser from the app tray and don't even think about it. Another nice feature from Chrome is it will sync your bookmarks from other devices if you log in with the same Google account.
EDIT: ah, interesting -- just noticed a "Verizon" bookmarks folder in my Mobile bookmarks folder. Can't delete it. Hmmm, doesn't seem too distracting...

Hey Matt, appreciate the input. Yep I have chrome and opera mini installed, as well as dolphin, which used to be my main browser. I recently read about the dolphin browser being from china or routing data to a Chinese server, so I've pretty much stopped using it. The stock browser actually isn't bad - it feels just as fast as Chrome overall, and I like the "lab" UI on the stock browser a lot. And it seems to sync with the bookmarks from the google account too.
Stupid Verizon... guess we'll have to wait until root to delete them!

So what's this lab UI you speak of -- or did you mean to say "tab"? Is it worth unhiding the stock browser to check out? Didn't realize it also syncs Google bookmarks. Guess I should check those things before offering advice!
FWIW...speaking of root, this is my fifth day with the One and I'm totally understanding those "I can live with this phone as-is" testimonials. My only concern is whether it will start to slow down without regular shots of fstrim (which we'll get someday with 4.3). At least I know now how to get into the bootloader/ecovery to clear the regular cache.

Nope, I meant labs! It's almost like an easter egg... go to Settings --> Labs --> turn on Quick Control.
This puts the stock browser in full screen mode and hides everything. Very clean! The control is tricky at first - what I've discovered works best for me is to use the side of my thumb and roll over from the edge, as if running over a finger print scanner. Then, a wheel pops up with all settings, bookmarks, etc. Once you get the hang of it, it's super intuitive and so elegant.
And you know what... the same thing was already in my Rezound stock browser too! Maybe it's Sense thing? If so, HTC really sucks at marketing - I really love this feature.
Also I read in some posts that the stock browser gave the best battery life. In light of all the tracking going on, I am starting to try to pull back from all things Google. So for now, I am enjoying the stock browser - save for the stupid Verizon locked bookmarks!
What's this about fstrim and cleaning cache? Mind elaborating?

Wow Eric, thanks for filling in the blanks. I definitely have to try it.
Here's the quick breakdown on my side:
fstrim -- The TRIM function in Android/Linux takes memory space that has been deleted, and informs the memory controller that it's available (it normally doesn't check until it tries to find writable space which eats up CPU time). The fstrim function has been added to 4.3 and runs quietly when the device is idle (you can also run the Lagfix app, but it requires root). As a case study, it totally transformed the slow and pokey 1st gen Nexus 7 into a speedy beast.
cache cleaning -- Ideally, we'd have root and could occasionally delete the Dalvik cache as well as the regular data cache. Unfortunately we can't do the first, but we can still do the latter by booting into the bootloader (this post helped me figure it out) and then just running the "wipe cache" option. I suspect it's something that won't be frequently needed on the One, but I'm glad we have the option.
EDIT: based on your sig I'm guessing that second part about cache-cleaning was pitched way too low -- if so, sorry -- it's a bad habit of mine!

For me, yes, the stock browser picked up the Chrome bookmarks. The interesting thing is that it didn't carry over the bookmark icons or labels. They're just blank, generic bookmarks for some reason. I have to guess which is which. Folder names translated over for some reason. Weird.
I used Dolphin for the longest time since I was caught up in the stigma that the stock browser sucks. I couldn't have been more wrong.
About 3 months ago I ditched Dolphin and started using the default browser in CM9, and loved it. Now all I use is the stock browser. It does its thing very well and never fusses about updates in the play store or routes traffic through China.

Oh no you're good Matt - being helpful and spreading useful info is never a bad habit I actually didn't think about this before, but yeah basically all phones are essentially running on small SSDs and TRIM support would be crucial to long-term performance.

That's interesting, because the stock browser on mine showed the Chrome bookmarks perfectly, including everything from names and website icons to the folders.

Think I did it. Didn't bother me till you pointed it out, thanks, sent me on another crusade! Try this: Go to system/app and rename PartnerBookmarksProvider.apk to PartnerBookmarksProvider.apk.bak and then data/data add .bak to com.android.providers.partnerbookmarks clear clear cache and reboot.

Haha well I am glad to help! So I renamed both and wiped both davlik and the normal cache partition in TWRP. Just rebooted. The three bookmarks are still there... and I still can't delete or edit them in any way. I even went into the browser2.db and deleted all entries under the bookmarks table using SQLite Editor. Still no luck.
What did I miss?

Nothing. What I did was apparently allow them to be removed from Chrome and I assume other browsers. They must be hard coded in the stock. I've never used it. I bet the apk will have to be dismantled to get them gone.

Hi All
I Love my M9, I think its awesome but do I need to have Googles webview. I used to have it installed (quite a while ago) but found it was a massive battery drain.
If i understand it correctly, according to this article:
https://www.infinum.co/the-capsized...5-lollipop-what-is-it-and-why-should-you-care
It seems more like a way for app developers to deliver updates quicker and it affects only Chrome users
Is this correct or should I have it installed, even if I use the stock HTC or Firefox browser.
Is it better now-a-days on battery and M9s resources
Thanks

Google Webview came preinstalled with my Nexus updates but I have never updated or used it actually. I am actually not even sure what it does apart from some advanced APIs which normal user wouldn't ever use and if you read user comments about the app, they are pure sarcastic and full of humour. Gave me some nice laughs.
Do not worry if you have not installed it. Think of this app like the world's useless app which has some hidden supper powers but for that you will have to check it for yourself!

WebView is the part of the Android OS responsible for rendering web pages in most Android apps. If you see web content in an Android app, chances are you're looking at a WebView. The major exception to this rule is Google Chrome for Android, which instead uses its own rendering engine, built into the app. (The same goes for some third-party Android browsers like Firefox.) Well, WebView isn't that useless. The majority of people commenting that app on google play simply don't understand its function. If your apps are running fine after you uninstalled WebView then there is no need to reinstall it. But I wouldn't be suprised if you faced some problems with some of your apps that are showing web content.

From what I can gather, it seems that people just dont know what it is and are commenting on the fact that its creating problem, crashes and shut-downs n their devices, and yes.. some of the responses are quite funny, but from the way the app looks, its explanation is quite complicated.

After a bit more reading, the app allows you to view content without having to have the browser on that web page or even open at all, such as documents or maybe even video/audio from a certain site, which in itself is a great idea especially in Multi-tasking.. kind of like a multi-window (ala Samsung & LG), but at this point Goohgle just havent explained it properly, plus it looks like a beta process.. soething that may appear in Android 5.1 or even 6. Im not really sure.
Thanks anyway for the help folks.. needless to say, Ill leave it alone for now
Just today there is a new item on my battery stats....mdnsd. It is the top item in battery stats. Anyone have any ideas what it is, why it is suddenly killing my battery, and how to fix it?
This is on stock unrooted OJ6. (It showed up on the second day of use for OJ6.)
As I continue searching for a solution, I find this bug report from mobile Firefox regarding 42.0:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1215012
In short, is says it this may be a bug in certain beta firefox mobile, and Stable version 42.0 (which is the version I am using) which causes excessive mdnsd usage. Not sure if this is it, but I'll follow this for a while.
Try another browser. Chrome is impressive but I didn't like their merge tabs feature so I disabled it (right near the top of settings).
I recently kicked FlashFox (not to be confused with Mozilla) to the curb for recent constant running of a collector service; reported the app twice for this (the app kept restarting this service). Switched to Mercury browser for a flash browser.
I hate apps that don't behave... browsers can be the worse offenders here.

I don't sign-in or sync browsers. I tend to use my phone a lot for important stuff on the web so I sync my open tabs with titanium as needed and use bank apps. Chrome doesn't get all bogged-down with all those tabs ready to open.
I could just make them shortcuts but I got started on that with temporary browser tests until I could settle on one... creature of habit.

Personally i have never really felt the need to get rid of the facebook app despite the bad criticism it gets online! Recently however i decided to disable it and use an alternative app (swipe pro) Its not quiet as good as the proper facebook app but its not bad! If it was gonna help with battery life then i was happy to stick with it but iam not so sure it has! Battery life ever since has been equal at best , possibly even a little worse off then i was when i had the facebook app so iam wondering whats the actual difference between the two? Is the facebook app after improving or are alternative apps such as swipe pro simply not as good as they should be? Iam talking strictly in terms of saving battery life here!
Thoughts?
I tried out Swipe for Facebook, but it wasn't as fluent as Metal for Facebook.
All these apps are wrappers for the web version of FB.
I'd always use FB on browser, but it's annoying to view messages (request desktop site and then it doesn't fit to screen. Still though, Metal surely has the fastest loading time for me.
The regular Facebook app (and Messenger) are complete battery hogs. They eat up more resources than they should and have a lot of unneeded permissions. I could deal with that if they didn't force Messenger on it.
Anyways, any third party Facebook app is just a wrapper to the mobile web version. They will always require less permissions and resources.

Any reasoning why i havent seen any improvement in battery life? It actually seems to be a tad worse! I should add that i have not been experiencing poor battery life, Iam content with it but i just wanted to rid myself of facebook and try an alternative in the hope i could improve battery life a little further but in my own personal experience, disabling facebook and using swipe pro instead has made no difference!!

Placebo?
Have you actually used a proper app to track the app's usage? Wakelocks? Drain? Etc. I'm sure Swipe has less usage.
You're never gonna have a DRASTIC change in overall battery, though.
If you want to improve battery life, look up Greenify.
Even non-root mode is useful.

I just downloaded that app and holy crap it's so smooth, I know it wasn't directed to me but thank you. ?

Is greenify worth it? Seems to be conflicting info on it. Some say its great, others say its not necessary and others say it actually runs in the background and thus they found the battery life to be equally as bad if not worse when using greenify!!

Greenify drains almost no battery, it's very lightweight and designed to work well.
It's best use would be to shut down apps that run in the background to get less drain. I do it when I am at work and whatnot, it saves a lot of battery for me in the end.
It also does aggresive doze (optional) to further save some juice.
There's no way Greenify can make your battery worse, I've never heard of that.
The only thing that can is like 85% of those battery saver apps on the Play Store. I'm sure some are good, but most suck.
I switched from FB to Swipe Pro a few month ago. According to GSam battery monitor, FB was always the top drainer, Swipe is much more easy on the battery.

Glad to hear that
Does anyone here know what the best set up for swipe pro is? After using it the past 24 hours i quiet like it and battery life does seem to have been improved a little but i have two issues! Iam not seeing/receiving any notifications unless i go in to the app? I have 'enable notifications' ticked and whilst they are present within the app, iam not seeing them until i use the app which sucks a little!! Ironically i have 'vibrate' off and when i go into the app and the notification shows itself it vibrates ha Any ideas?
Also, the settings in general are a bit confusing in my opinion. For example , should i toggled 'enable messages' to on or leave off if i still use messenger? and with notification frequency sync . I had it set to manual on the original app but on this thats not an option?? Is there a difference in how both work? And what is foreground syncing?
Thanks
Oh and on a side note. Whilst i know the difference between amoled and lcd panels and understand that each pixel is being used with lcd regardless of wether the wallpaper is black or not! Is there any power savings to be had at all by using black wallpapers/themes on the htc 10??

I've been experiencing battery drain issues with random apps even after shutting off permissions for those apps and shutting off background activity. These apps have also been added to battery optimization.
I've noticed this happens when I open the app and then shut them down, by swiping away from recent apps screen - verified by reopening the app and it never is in the memory and reloads. But they still continue to drain the battery in the background (as can be seen on the screenshot with battery drainers). Facebook is a usual culprit but not the only one, there is generally a few of them as you can see there are some games too. This pretty much keeps changing to different apps every now and then. I feel I'm doing something wrong which is really causing this drain.. every now and then. Any suggestions / opinions?
Thanks!

To add, I'm on the latest firmware with May security update (the one has been persistent throughout before and even now) ans not rooted.
How many time you do it ? Because it consumes less battery to keep them in memory than to reload all the apps every time you use them.

Just a pointer re Facebook.
Take a look at your System apps in Device /Settings /App category
Look for Facebook... and you will see other 3 x Facebook related
apps also listed ..!
You shut Facebook down but the Facebook Services, Facebook App Manager.. etc...? is still running and suckling battery.?
See my screen snip.
I most probably don't need to remind you that Facebook,
has over the past years, been fingered/known, to drain battery
.
My solution, which you most likely won't l "ike"
is to temporarily disable Facebook and the other Facebook related system apps.
Uninstall the one small Game or both??
and see if there is a improvement ?
Good luck.

I meant I've tried both strategies. Shut them off by swiping them away, letting them be and also shutting off thr app's setting to run in background. Nothing worked really.

That's the issue, Facebook doesn't really bother me but the games (or other apps like Twitter or tiktok or Instagram) do. And it's not always Facebook or these specific games. It's different each day - any apps I more frequently used that day continue to stick there consuming power. Every day it's a different set of apps. But wondering why stick causing a drain!

yes ,
Firstly ,
over the years ,i have been a few times, in similar "position" than you, re apps and battery draining .!
I know it's very frustrating ..annoying .....
and in the end i always ended up doing a factory reset . !!
I use a cross section of a different "set " of tools eg BettterbatteryStats ,Wakelock Detector lite ,Gsam Battery etc . ( all ADB enabled) to try and pinpoint the culprit ..
Unfortunately ,the permutation/reasons can be many ??
eg You installed and uninstalled an app and "something " eg System settings got corrupted .?
You disabled /freezed ,an System app and it has an knock on effect .
You did some mod /hack or maybe a sideloaded app thats causing it ..?
App that you installed that's badly coded .
It also could be that when you did an OTA to latest firmware that something/system ,got corrupted..?
Bottom line ,
You sitting with a very irritating/frustrating issue .
Your options is either to live with it ? or try and find the culprit ?
or doing a factory reset .?
Yes, i know you most likely, don't favor a factory reset.
As stated i always ended up doing a factory,on the spur of the moment !!!
Then doing a clean install from scratch ..a few apps at a time .......
Anyway it's your choice .??
Good luck .

Thanks buddy, you make some really good points. This is the first time ever that I haven't rooted the phone or done anything to disrupt the default OS. All I've done is the ADB permissions required for the GSAM Batteey app tk be able to pill detailed info.
I'm thinking if there's some way to reset all permissions and reconfigure them as the apps require? That has fixed things for me in the past.
Factory reset isn't an easy option for me because of RSA apps configured on the phone otherwise I've got to go through a few calls to get access - sorta irritating.
Hopeful something works but until then I'm letting it be lol.
Thanks!

I understand above if you say factory reset is an issue.!
I have a app call Bouncer paid (Play Store) installed on my device.
Don't think there is a free version, cannot remember, as I've had it for a while.
It basically controls your app permissions.
You can configure it to automatically remove permissions after using relevant app.
Also you can reset permissions.
It might help you.?
You can Google around a and see reviews.
To give you a idea, look at my screenshot.
Sorry, can't give any links, as it a paid app.
Good luck

Purchased the app. Kinda handy, but even after rule once set, when you come out of the app, you need to remove the permissions (the overlay window on top requests for removal) - that sorta adds work opening / closing apps.
My battery issues have improved immensely by putting the Facebook app in deep sleep. Battery life now is pretty decent.
check find my mobile.apk and samsung internet browser.apk if at all installed official apps from apkmirror etc the uninstall that apk and go through galaxy store but in galaxy store dont update findmymobile.apk

I suggest you take another look at your Bouncer settings.
You can auto remove it.
I had it on this setting but, change it to lock notifications, as i had better control.
Also remember to back up your Bouncer settings.
If ever you make a mistake you can just import you permission settings.
I forgot to do this a one stage and had to redo over Bouncer 200 apps.. Permissions...!
Otherwise if not sure as dev of Bouncer, for assistance
Good luck
