OP3 won't unlock 'Wrong PIN' - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

So I backed up stock OxygenOS with TWRP, copied that backup to my PC, flashed the CM13 nightly to test it, wiped the device, restored original backup from TWRP.
Boots up, asks me for my PIN, this works and so it continues to boot Android.
At the lock screen it says 'Wrong PIN' when it's correct and it's the only PIN I've ever used on the device.
Does anyone have any suggestions that may fix this?
Thanks.

I had the same problem with unlock pattern, idk how to solve it without formatting internal memory.
but you can erase internal memory (factory reset) and your phone will reboot and be clean (wiped everyting including pin)

Yep it sucks, I'm trying to avoid that

This is a known issue with twrp. You should be disabling security (pin/fingerprint) before making a back up. There is a thread on here on how to get around it.

"Wrong PIN" after TWRP restore

I made a TWRP backup yesterday to play with the stock ROM for a bit, but after restoring it today I can't unlock it. Every time I enter my PIN it says "Wrong PIN." I have no idea why. I've tried wiping everything but the SD card in TWRP before restoring again, but it still won't unlock. Anyone know what could be causing this?
T-Mobile G4 (H811)
Cyanogenmod 13.0
TWRP 3.0.2.0
I had this problem with Cyanogenmod. After restoring my backup the lock screen pattern did not work anymore.
I had to delete these two files:
/data/system/gesture.key
/data/system/cm_gesture.key
Afterwards there was no lock screen protection and I was able to set up a new one.
Maybe there is something similar for the PIN.

Maybe a factory reset
In fact, it suffices to delete locksettings.db in /data/system. @codeworkx explained this workaround somewhere in the official CM thread.

Questions about encryption of an unlocked OP3

Hey Guys,
When I got my OP3 I unlocked the bootloader right away and installed FreedomOS to get rid of the bloatware. As this is my first device, which comes with a locked bootloader and decryption, I have some questions about this topic. I was wondering that the encryption does not make any sense when you unlock your bootloader, because if somebody steals your phone, he can just enter twrp and access all your data. Then I flashed CM and after that TWRP was asking me to set a pin or pattern to lock my phone. Now I've to unlock my phone every time I want to enter the recovery or boot the system with a pattern, which is great, because now the encryption is not worthless anymore. Now I'm asking myself if this feature is somehow integrated into CM or was it just random that I found this feature? Is there any way to get this also with OOS installed? What things do I have to note to not accidentally make my phone unencryptable with the pattern? Is this even possible, maybe by flashing a new recovery or so?
Thanks in advance

If your phone is encrypted, TWRP has to prompt you to decrypt the /data partition before it can be mounted. This isn't a CM feature, it should act like this with any ROM if phone encryption is enabled. I've flashed most every rom and version of twrp in this forum and they all seem to work fine with the encryption enabled. I have not flashed multiboot yet as that requires your phone to be completely unencrypted. Not sure if that answers your question.
If security is your concern though, I would recommend switching to a passphrase instead of pattern for encryption unless your pattern is very long and complex. I recommend a passphrase of at least 16 characters.

When you first booted up your stock phone and went through setup it asks if you want to secure the phone using pin/pattern/passphrase. I think that is where it is created then that key is written somewhere, not on the data or system partitions because is persists between wipes, and that is where TWRP and all future roms are authenticating you.

Here is how to decrypt without losing data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/unencrypt-oxygenos-loosing-data-t3412228
There is another article I think I saw it on the OnePlus forums about how to decrypt and wipe which will let you change the passphrase I think.
Basically if you decrypt, then flash Oxygen or Hydrogen without SuperSU it will force you to re-encrypt. At least that is my understanding as I haven't decrypted yet.
Good luck

As far as I understood it, it's all about wiping userdata, which I did before flashing Freedom OS. This might explain why I had no encryption... Still strange that it did not prompt me again to set a new one...
edit: FreedomOS has supersu, but systemless... I also flashed supersu right after CM which is even more strange...

Yeah I have wiped userdata and system and clean reflashed like 20-30 times in the last few weeks and I've never been prompted to recreate the initial passphrase I set for encryption.

But I never had to decrypt in TWRP... It's mysterious As far as I understand the guide he just wipes userdata and the encryption is gone... Is there somebody who knows for sure where the key is located actually?
edit: Seems like the encryption key is coupled to your password
When a user elects to change or remove their password in settings, the UI sends the command cryptfs changepw to vold, and vold re-encrypts the disk master key with the new password.

I can confirm that. I changed my pattern and unlocked the phone with it at booting.
If I remove my password it still says "encrypted" in security but I don't have to enter any pattern at boot.
Mine says "Encrypted" under Settings > Security & Fingerprint > Encryption but I can boot into TWRP and browse the entire file system without ever entering my pin code.

Sounds like you have the same issue like I had. It seems to me like an issue in OOS.
This is awesome. I thought rooting and unlocking the bootloader to install custom ROMs would need the phone to be decrypted -- great, great news!
So without knowing the passphrase a possible attacker can't get to the data even when the bootloader is unlocked and OS rooted?

Yes, all your data is being decrypted after your enter the passphrase.
Does anyone have any idea how I can encrypt my phone if it already says Settings > Security & fingerprint > Encryption > Encrypt phone = "Encrypted"? It's clearly not actually encrypted because I do not have to enter any pin to boot or read data in TWRP.

Go to lock screen settings and set it up again. You will be prompted if you want to enter pin every reboot.

Hey, thanks! The "require PIN to start device" screen doesn't make any mention of encryption, so I was under the impression that it was far more basic and wasn't at all related to encryption. I tried it though and now TWRP does ask me to decrypt my data partition, so it does work. Thanks for the assist!
been following this thread and i had a quick questions - so it looks like if you unlock BL and run a custom ROM, you can still have the security of encryption, but does this ONLY apply to the USERDATA partition?
for example, could someone launch TWRP recovery on your phone and flash something into the SYSTEM partition without ever touching your userdata partition (ie, a keylogger or malware)?
It seems to me that only the data partition is encrypted, but someone correct me if I'm wrong. I looked at the Android full disk encryption page and I only see mentions of the data partition.

so system is never encrypted? i guess at that point the stock recovery stops you from flashing malware but \TWRP wont

Your internal storage is mounted into your data partition actually. I think this means it's also encrypted.

I see no reason behind encrypting system, it's used read-only anyway as long as you don't flash something to it.
edit: Ah I see now what you mean. But if you have stock recovery you can also simply flash twrp over it or flash something to system via adb... I don't know if it would even be possible technically to encrypt system. Anyway I think the only solution would be to lock the bootloader I think. I don't know what actually happens if you lock your bootloader again while on twrp and custom rom, might brick your device

Stuck on just a sec screen after language selection

Guys i need help. No matter what rom i flash i cant get past language selection. My phone always gets stuck on Just a sec loading screen.
Clean flash dosen't work
wiping everything/factory reset dosen't work
I noticed this started happening after i flashed no_verify_op5.zip and also deleted lockscreen.db files in /data/system to bypass first boot lockscreen pin entry due to previously encrypted rom
I also have no nandroid backup hence im stuck without an OS

how to wipe internal storage?
I've tried wiping internal storage, also format data. Nothing is working, please help. My device is Redmi Note 4 {mido}. I have tried using different ROMs too.:crying::crying:
bro did u find a solution....? pls say. I am stuck in same problem and wiping the internal storage doesn't helps.
I'm in the same boat with Verizon Note 3. I've tried flashing lineage 16.0 official, unofficial, couple other Android 9 based ROMs, never get past 'Just a sec....' Tried wiping everything but microSD, formatting, nothing has any effect.
So, how did you guys managed to solve this problem? My 5t is stuck in "Just a sec..." screen, changing roms won't help. :/

The issue still persists even after Wiping internal storage or Formatting data. Nothing worked. However, I managed to install the stock ROM to my Redmi Note 4 after this and continued to use the phone. But I can't go past the Just a sec.....screen in Resurrection Remix 7.0.2 ROM and I want it badly. Any help?
I had this issue on my Mi Mix 3 after downgrading Magisk.
It kept being stuck on 'Just a sec...' even after resetting and wiping everything back to factory settings on my phone
I managed to fix it by flashing and older stock ROM to my phone from my laptop using the MiFlash tool, it still couldnt boot afterwards but I didn't need to fill in a password in TWRP anymore..
after the password was removed by the flashing, i flashed a xiaomi.eu ROM from TWRP and my phone finally booted back up again.
I hope this somehow helps anyone, if you have any questions I'd be glad to brainstorm for a solution with you
Best of luck all!
In my case the fix was trivial!
https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQue..._just_a_sec_after_factory_reset_help/fmmiqjb/
I fixed it by erasing data via stock recovery (not TWRP).
I Have similar issue suck at just a sec ... screen and my phone is vivo v15 pro.

yes it seems to not work at 1st on first boot! doesnt detect storage 0mb
but when i hit wipe/advanced wipe/data then
hit repair change file system then hit change file system
to ext2 then back ext2
it detects internal storage
but when i booted into android it wanted to encrypt data and wipe it.
so i manually wiped data in recovery then rebooted an bam it works
an it still detects my internal storage........yay thank you so much
it just doesnt detect my micro sd card

I didn't realize people were still having issues with twrp on the tmo/Metro variant. Id have to double check with Aeorsyn but im pretty sure we posted one somewhere in this forum that works...at least for me...perfectly with the exception of the time being off every now and then. It flashes zip and image files, makes backups, restores, wipes, works with twrp themes, reads internal and external sd, and even usb via otg. I've been running it for a couple months now without issue. Is there something im missing that people are trying to do that I'm just blind too? Lol if anyone wants a link to the twrp I'm using just lemme know.

Twrp deletes stock rom
Maybe you can help me out, maybe im missing something. I have the g5 (hannah) MetroPCS variant. Everytime I flash TWRP it deletes my system. Ive tried 3 other TWRPs with no luck. One way or another I cannot boot, (bad key). Then I reflash my stock rom and try again. Ive tried with and without allowing system modifications with no avail. However when I first flash and boot into recovery there is a screen asking to decrypt. it asks to enter a password but the screen doesnt respond to touch for the pattern dots. Does that decrypting need to happen for TWRP to work correctly? Thanks

I used Sir's (THANKS!) twrp and just booted it without flashing,(worked great!) it boots fine but asks for unlock pattern and doesn't accept the one I have set, (I'm guessing this is where decrypt.zip comes into play, but unsure), I hit cancel and KEPT READ ONLY , then made individual backups of boot + system + system.image
I also get the Bad key however I believe this is normal after unlocking the bootloader.. If you wait a bit it should still eventually boot.. I'd like to try to make a boot animation..

turns out its not deleting the rom. its a problem with the boot image or encryption . When i first boot into twrp i cannot see internal storage. if i change my partition from ext4 then back to ext2 it shows up and the decrypt.zip is successful. however when i reboot phone it hangs at motorola screen. I then went back to fastboot and flashed stock boot.img and the phone almost booted up. I got hung at decryption unsuccessful perform factory reset. I dont know why this is so complicated any suggestions.

Stuck at lock screen after failing an update

Recently, phone updated itself automatically to 11.0.3 version from 11.0.1. Now it is stuck at lock screen and none of the gestures or buttons working in lock screen(only long pressing power button restarts phone). Phone is china version. I can access to the fastboot and recovery. Can I fix it without installing new rom on it?
Deleting the lockscreen password seems to fix it for me, had this happen a few times. You can do it through twrp, delete locksetting* or gesture* from /data/system.
If you can't mount data, then formatting data is the only way, wiping isn't the same.

You can try flashing back to your previous ROM but I think your only options are going through TWRP to save your data or formatting data.
