I finally got around to rooting/etc my Z00AD, only to get stuck at the custom recovery stage.
I have found a dozen other identical cases on the forums, but sadly none have been resolved.
Rooting went swimmingly, and my bootloader also unlocked flawlessly (I believe). The new recovery (TWRP first) flashed over with no issues. Then I rebooted and selected 'recovery' from the fastboot menu, and the phone just reboots back into the fastboot stage. I can boot normally from there, just not to recovery. I have also tried flashing other recoveries, with no luck.
Since the ROM is still stock, I can boot to Android and it re-writes the recovery to stock after my custom recovery fails to boot.
My thoughts are that my bootloader did not unlock properly, even though installation itself seemed to go well. How should I 'redo' that process?
Any other thoughts?

Thanks everyone
Either reflash the correct recovery (download a fresh file, in case of faulty download) or follow unbricking instructions.

Have you tried booting into fastboot and typing "fastboot oem device-info" without the quotes? It should tell you whether your bootloader is truly unlocked. If it is unlocked I would boot into stock recovery, wipe the cache, and do a factory reset. Then you can try installing twrp again. Have you updated the SuperSu binaries? I'm no expert this is just what I would do.
Same problem here, it seems that 2.20.40.195 is the problem.
I can also do fastboot flash but anything but official recovery won't start and returns to bootloader. fastboot oem device-info returns FAILED (remote: unknown OEM command)
.
Is it possible to downgrade?

....aaand it wasn't truly unlocked. While I didn't test it using your method, before reading your response I tried re-unlocking the bootloader, and I got the proper white background upon reboot (last attempt I flashed the original black background immediately after I thought I had unlocked the bootloader, thinking it was required. Thus I never had a repeated confirmation I had failed the unlocking).
After ACTUALLY unlocking the bootloader, each further step worked perfect. Running CM13 flawlessly.
2 days later I shattered my screen. oh well. Ordered a new screen, we'll see how I do with a hardware repair...

Hi,
I'm trying to flash TWRP on my Zenfone 2 Z00A but it won't work. I cannot boot to TWRP.
My device is unlocked and rooted and I can flash boot.img, droidboot.img and stock recovery.img but TWRP IMG won't work.
After flashing TWRP using command "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" and trying to boot into it nothing happens phone restart and boot to bootloader asking me to choose "Normal boot", "Recovery mode" "Reboot bootloader" ect.. and when I select "Recovery mode" phone restart and boot again to Bootloader not TWRP.
I also tried to flash TWRP using "Rashr" same problem not booting to TWRP.
Tethered CWM is working and I was able to boot to it but not TWRP
On the other hand if I flash back stock recovery and boot to it boots just fine.
What's wrong? Any idea guys?
Thanks in advance..
So, you've unlocked the bootloader or did you skip that part?

Yes it's unlocked.
When I flash TWRP via CMD using fastboot command it shows successful writing TWRP IMG file. Otherwise it will show permission denied if the bootloader is locked AFAIK.
The splashscreen is white which means the bootloader is unlocked. But I don't know why it's not working.
Device is CN version flashed with WW firmware.
TWRP App-based installation
I've also tried upgrading to twrp-2-8-7-2-Z00A.img from within the TWRP Manager app. It seems to download and gets to the "installing/verifying" screen, then dies after a minute or two. The phone is rooted and unlocked. But after about the 4th or 5th try, it worked.
Ok problem solved
It turns out there was a problem with the bootloader. I used the adb commands to unlock it and it was showing successful but some how it was not unlocked fully as it seems.
The splash screen turned to white after unlocking the bootloader so I thought it was unlocked. I even tried unlocking it many times and every time the adb results were showing bootloader unlocking success but it tuned out it wasn't unlocked fully.
Today I used the official bootloader unlocking App from ASUS and unlocked the bootloader. I flash TWRP again and rebooted to recovery and BAM ! it booted to TWRP

Hello, I have similar problem with my Zenfone 2 Z00A. Bootloader seems to be unlocked because of white splash screen on start-up, but I cannot flash TWRP recovery via fastboot flash recovery ***.img. The process shows no problems/errors but despite that no TWRP after reboot.
Can you explain how you found out that bootloader was not unlocked fully?

I don't know why but after 4-th or 5-th attempt TWRP finally loaded.
Hi, I have a similar problem with my zenfone 2 z00A. My device is not rooted. I tried to use the process described here.
Installation
Latest releases, tools and general information

I tried bootloader unlock process with the app on my phone first, but after 4-5 times of use, it always came up with 'Network error'. I went with the 2nd part of unlocking bootloader to transfer TWRP imgae file. Now the phone is starting with a white splash screen and showing 4 options: Normal boot, Power off, Recovery mode and Restart bootloader. I have tried fastboot flash recovery twrp.img and fastboot boot 'twrp.img', but still can't get to TWRP recovery process.
Hi,
I have the Find 7 with the new display panel.
I wanted to flash the latest version of TWRP but failed. I do not know what I did wrong.
I can use adb and fastboot without any problem. When trying to flash recovery, it says there that the flash was successful but when I reboot to recovery, TWRP was not installed and the original Oppo recovery is still there.
The bootloader is unlocked. And I tried relocking and unlocking again but to no avail. Whenever I use the command "fastboot oem unlock", nothing happens to the phone.
I am currently on spectrum. I want to try other roms such as the lite COS 2.15 and also maxwen roms since that only those supports the new panel.
I am also trying to get root for my phone and it is impossible without custom recovery.
Thanks for any help.
I had poop loads of issues with getting custom recovery on my Find 7a. Eventually I used these instructions:
http://community.oppo.com/my/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=996
They work. Don't know if it's the versions of ADB or Fastboot or something.
Give it a go

I will give it a go when I get back. Thanks!
This is what a forumer from the official forum said and it works:
After you had successfully flash recovery via fastboot, you MUST NOT reboot the device. AFAIK, if you reboot the device it will restore the recovery back to stock oppo recovery.
So instead, you need to immediately press vol down & power button on the fastboot screen. Keep holding the button until you see the TWRP recovery screen. Hope that helps. Cheers!""

Unlocking bootloader erases data?
Mine wouldn't flash recovery. It said successful but I still had oppo recovery 1.2 and it only worked when I found the latest official twrp over version 3. after flashing, I disconnected usb and then held down power button to shut the phone down. It then was able to boot to twrp ok.
I used the latest one.

Hi. I'm terribly lost.
I bought a ze500kl (z00ed) and played around with root, twrp and marshmallow. The last thing I did was installing marshmallow and then I wanted to flash twrp.
What I ended up with is a phone which you can't boot, you can't get into recovery and I'm not even able to flash any other recovery than the stock one. And even if I flash it 'successsuccessfully' I'm still not able to boot into it.
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
yields the phone starting back into fastboot mode.
As far as I understood my bootloader seems to be locked.
How can I get my phone working again?
The command fastboot reboot-bootloader only boots you into the bootloader, meaning to the fastboot. If you want to boot to recovery, you need to select this option in the fastboot menu. I don't remember if you can use a fastboot command for that, and I can't turn off my phone to check.
On the ze500kl, when phone off, press vol- and power to enter recovery.
some progress
Thanks for the info. I did already try to wrok with the vol- button but it just keeps showing the ASUS and android logos and doesn't start twrp. I've succeeded to install the system thanks to the following site: (I c'an't post it cuz I'm not here long enough) however now I'm again not getting into twrp.

If you haven't unlocked your bootloader then you can't flash TWRP. You need to unlock bootloader. I have the 551ML so can't help here. Try the search function and read...
Try to erase your cache partition in fastboot with the command "fastboot erase cache", this might get you booting back into Android but since you've been playing around without doing the necessary reading, no guarantees...
To get to recovery, stock or custom, you must go through fastboot or bootloader mode. You need to use the volume key until it says recovery then hit power key. It will reboot the phone and most probably show you a droid on its back with "Error" above it (if it's still stock). Hold down power and press volume up to enter recovery.

I did qutite some experimenting today. What I'm currently ended up with is:
1) I can boot into the system.
2) I can't boot into the recovery of the Phone
3) I can boot the StockRecovery via fastboot however I can't boot TWRP by any procedure (Although I was able to do so during my experimenting. I don't understand why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't)
4) My Phone is Rooted (at least it says so)
5) I have run the Unlock.Zip via TWRP when I had TWRP flashed however now I'm again at a point where I can't start TWRP at all.
I find this very confusing and I can't see any pattern to it. For now I'm OK with having a more or less functional phone but I'd like it to be more reliable and predictable in behaviour.
First of all you can't boot directly to recovery the way you are thinking. Booting into fastboot (actually called the bootloader) then selecting recovery is the normal way. You can't have 2 recoveries on your phone. So you probably did the tethered version of TWRP the first time. I don't have the link handy but you need to get the official TWRP and use fastboot to install.

You HAVEN'T UNLOCKED YOUR BOOTLOADER...
No recovery or custom rom will flash successfully... It will say it will, but you will either go into bootloop or just get stuck at ASUS logo...
Nothing will stick until the bootloader is unlocked, if you use tethered TWRP and flash a custom rom you will softbrick your phone until you flash a stock rom back on.
If you go ahead and flash TWRP onto your phone using fastboot then you will have NO recovery on your phone.
You have been warned...

Well I disagree and I think you are wrong . I strongly assume that I have TWRP installed as I'm able to boot into it without having the phone connected to the computer.
Consequently I HAVE unlocked my bootloader and I DO HAVE a recovery on my phone. And of course I'm not able to install a custom rom seing that there aren't any for my model yet.
I think however that I've (for now) [SOLVED] my problem and we're drifting away from the original topic. Thanks for your quick help :highfive:
Hello everyone. I got a M8s from a friend wich is stuck in bootloader. The recovery didn't work at the begin, so I flashed twrp-recovery-2.8.6.0-m8s-qlul.img (flashing recovery using htc_fastboot.exe flash recovery theimagename.img) and it worked, then I tried to install a custom ROM Android_Pandora_Rom_1.2_(Discontinued).zip wich went all the steps fine until: Optimizing applications 8 of 204..then phone shat down to black screen. I booted back to bootloader, recovery, wiped and go for a new install, same issue.
After that, I was going to install lineage-13.0-20170715-UNOFFICIAL-m8qlul.zip where the developer of this rom recommends twrp-3.0.2-0-m8ql.img so I tried to flash it (flashing recovery using htc_fastboot.exe flash recovery theimagename.img), then tried to acces recovery, brings me back to bootloader so fast, rebooted bootloader, tried again, same problem. Tried the fasboot erase cache, no help.
The Hboot state is Unlocked and the S is ON. I tried some other recovery images, as stock_signed or 3.0.1, tried the one from M8 ToolKit but all failed and I still can't access recovery, everyting I do, it brings me back to bootloader. I did htc_fastboot boot recoveryfile.img wich works, but useless, the dd if= method to set the recovery permanent load did not work after reboot, /data and /system can't be mountet, it seems the "boot recovery" option is 99% readonly.
Any advice, any help please? It would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Hi McBad,
you could try the following. I also had some problems to access the recovery.
- Again bring the phone into fastboot, flash the 2.8 recovery and access it
- Do a wipe for factory reset, not just only cache
- after that try to flash the twrp-3.0.1-0-m8ql.img version, the other one worked for me neither
- the try to install the custom ROM LOS13
I hope this will help you.

It would be great if that would work, but flashing a recovery does not work. I flash it, success message, try to access it, vibrates and bootloader pops back instantly. That is the problem.
Sorry for double post, but can anyone help me with this? This is the second day I struggle to make it work. Any chance to make the hboot locked again? It didn't work with oem lock command. I would like to lock it so I can put an official zip on sdcard so the hboot to restore it to factory stock, some RUU. Or get it s-off so I can flash a rom from fastboot? The phone does not have any ROM on it, image crc results system 0x0, recovery 0x0. Please, help!
Have you tried sideloading twrp ?

Is there any way you could flash twrp 2.8 again? Once in that recovery you have sideloading option which you could use to transfer latest recovery onto your device. Are we talking about the same process?

You can't install lineage if you haven't upgraded your device with latest official update. I would try reinstaling twrp 2.8, do a wipe of cache, dalvik cache and system, Sideload CM 12; and see how it goes. As well, while in twrp I would try relocking bootloader but only after an unsuccessful attempt to flash said rom. I don't know what your experience with soft bricked devices is, but sometimes it takes a while, different usb cable or usb slot on your PC, correct files in adb folder, re-download of rom or recovery because it easily gets corrupted while downloading. And obviously a fully charged device. Let us know how it goes.
Need help. I have zenfone 5z, my device is working properly, the bootloader is unlocked, and the phone is rooted but I'm not able to get TWRP I'm getting two errors,
1. When using fastboot boot C:\Android\platform-tools\twrp-3.6.2_11-0-Z01RD.img, I'm getting FAILED (remote: 'unknown command').
2. When using fastboot flash recovery C:\Android\platform-tools\twrp-3.6.2_11-0-Z01RD.img, I'm getting FAILED (remote: '(recovery_b) No such partition').
Initially, I was able to boot into TWRP but I didn't understand a few things at that time, so I lost TWRP as it was not permanent. Now, I have tried everything except using a different computer.
Someone had this same issue he resolved it after installing the driver a second time, when the device in bootloader, but it didn't work for me.
I think this is related to partition, but I don't know much about it. So, I flashed stock ROM (factory version) but no result.
I'm very much interested in using Custom ROMs any help would be appreciated.
