Hi guys,
I'm going to buy MTCB unit to my skoda and I have a problem to decide which model should I pick.
Joying is offering two units with exactly the same specs but different android os version, kitkat based unit is almost 40% cheaper.
I'm nexus user for years so I know differences between these os's well, IMO on car radio is not that relevant. Are there any noticeable advantages of LP model which make it worth additional costs?
Kitkat model: JY-VN130
Lollipop model: JY-VL130
I know that kitkat can't be upgraaded to lollipop so this decision will be final. I've checked all recent post on XDA and didn't find answer so I count on Your help guys
best regards!
Hi,
Currently investigating to replace a Parrot Asteroid. There is virtually no difference between Kitkat and Lollipop till you encounter an app that won't install on Kitkat. On Kitkat there is the Xposed framework that is mature and allows doing various interesting things. On Lollipop it is not that mature (if working). Never used Xposed actually.
Are you sure the units you mention are MTCB and not MTCD?
BR,
Jerome.
KitKat can be upgraded to Lollipop, I just did it two days ago. Go with the Joying KitKat version since it's cheaper, and just upgrade to 5.1 if you want to. That way you can try both and chose what you want. Xposed is working on 5.1 MTCB devices now.
Why wouldn't you buy an MTCD? That is the newer hardware that will be supported moving forward, and more likely to (hopefully) eventually have an SoM upgrade available.

Because MTCB/MTCC units have been around for longer and are more developed.
MTCB/MTCC also had SoM upgrades available in the past and there is no reason to suggest that they wont in future either, especially considering the recent news that the new MTCC units are nothing more than MTCB units with different MCU software - MTCC MCUs work on MTCB units and this suggests that MTCB/MTCC units wil still be developed by the manufacturers.

Ok, let me put it another way... when was the last time that Google did anything new for the Nexus 4?
MTCB is old news, dead, end of life.
MTCD is the replacement for it. This is what will be updated going forward.
If you buy an MTCB now, then you're going to be buying an MTCD to replace it shortly.
You can't think of chinese hardware in terms of "what if they might continue to support it?" -- they won't.

So wrong on so many counts, youve put 2 and 2 together and come up with 11.
Firstly pretty much ALL electronic hardware is Chinese, it may have a western or (non Chinese) Eastern badge on it, but it will originate from China (the iPhone for instance is designed and produced by a Chinese company in China, only the shell is designed by Crapple).
MTCB is indeed "old news" . . . because its been replaced by MTCC - MTCC is newer MCU firmware developed for MTCB units, which have now been re-named "MTCC" units and are STILL being produced, MTCD is not a replacement for MTCB/MTCC, they are being sold alongside each other.
In the smartphone market updates are complex and support for even leading brand phones is often dropped within a few years. Not so in the Android ICE market - MTCB units have been going for over 3 years and are STILL supported, hence the new MCU name - the units have gone from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and to 5.1.1, they have gone from dual to quad core and still have the possibility to be upgraded with a further SoM upgrade, few Android phones have this level of support and updates, NONE are capable of having their SoMs upgraded.
If MTCB was "dead and at the end of its life" do you think the manufacturers would bother to get the developers to develop new MCU firmware for it ? The very fact that the new MTCC update for MTCB units exists proves you are incorrect.

The difference is who owns the name and is taking responsibility (if any) for maintaining it.

So you have evidence of a current firmware update, that's far from a long term support promise.

The name and who owns it is totally irrelevant - these "no name" brands have been supported and developed (albeit sometimes not that well) for far longer than most "known" smartphone brands.

There were no promises of any support at all in the past, yet there has been for longer than most known brands (see above). It is not "a current firmware update" its a totally new name and version number for a previously existing MCU, if the units were "dead" updates would have simply stopped. Theyre, like gonna totally rename it, re-write the software and then drop it ? Yeah right.

See my previous posts - updates and suppport for 3 years (far more than named brands) - this is a "a very short time" is it ? MTCC units are supported and will continue to be supported.
I ve had several of these units in several vehicles over the last few years, I m in communication with at least one manufacturer and with other members who are in communication with other manufactures, I ve been following/contributing to threads on here about them for the best part of 3 years, I know far more about these units, their history, their foibles and their development that you can ever hope to know. You are wrong, your ideas are based on bigotted assumption, not fact and if you think they are "unsupported Chinese junk" then go away and stop wasting your time filling these forums with mis-information and rubbish. Oh and as MTCD units come from the same developers and manufacturers and use many of the same components, they must also be "unsupported Chinese junk" as well.
I am in contact with Klyde and have purchased over 30 of their units at different times. I noticed that they went to MTCD units and then dropped back to MTCC units.
When I queried why they stated "the MTCB/MTCC is a much more stable module, therefore they have ceased to retail the MTCD and have decided to revert back to the stable version" hence why a version of 5.1 was developed for the MTCB/MTCC module.

Ah, that is your problem, you do not have an MTCB/MTCC head unit, you have another type, try the "Android Auto General" forum, not the MTCB forums.

Thoughts? Thinking about ordering one.
I just returned a headunit from ATOTO because it worked like crap.
I like the prospect of 7.1 and offline maps already installed.
Quadcore vs Octacore I don't think makes a huge difference here.
Would love to know opinions.
I have a similar product to this with the product ID "B071LT7LC3" on Amazon. (I cannot post links yet) From the looks of things, my unit is likely the same hardware as yours, only with a different front panel and added DVD player. This is the information I read from the device:
MCU version: MTCD_XRC_V2.52_1
Build number: px3-userdebug 7.1.1 NMF26X eng.hct.20170527.145603 test-keys
Kernerl version: 3.0.101+ [email protected] #550
Model: px3 (800x480 O)
I sadly managed to brick mine by running an incompatible root method for Joying devices via Wireless ADB. I have not found a root method actually works on these units yet. If you are looking for an Android stereo that you can root, look elsewhere. I got a copy of the firmware from Hizpo, but not even that can fix the damage I did to it. It is with this warning I hope to prevent you making the same expensive mistake.
Note that you cannot use these units with a PC via USB, you must use Wireless ADB using an app. Use "126" to get into your factory settings and play with those, or "adbon" to enable debugging. You can also download a Development Options app to reach those settings, as they are hidden. The various methods of recoveries, including the one provided by the seller (Hold down the power button, turn on the power to the radio, release after 5 seconds and wait 30 to reach the recovery), did not seem to work for me either. It is possible I corrupted that too, but I am not sure.
I will happily share any other opinions I have about the unit if I ever manage to get it unbricked.

But certainly not root methods and certain firmwares. Pick the wrong one and you can brick your device beyond restoration - to the point where the recovery does not work and no firmware update worked to fix it. I had to get a new unit.

Yes, all RK3188 MTCD units are the same inside, they use the same SoM and ROMs ARE compatible as long as you get the screen res and processor type correct and even if you get the screen res wrong its no big deal, it wont brick.
However if you flash the firmware from an MTCB unit, or from an entirely different, unrelated unit , its sounds like this is what you did.

Hi, sorry to hear of your issues. If you care to confirm your order number, ill check on this.
Please may i add, SD cards are given with WINCE CE units, not android. Other suppliers of these units may give an SD card with maps but if you try to get updates for them from the official channels then you will find, the maps are in fact fake and against trademark and bootleg legislation. For this reason, we send a link to you via your order status showing how to download free maps from googleplay. This way, you can use them without breaching any laws and can get your updates for the map through the official channel.
Also, with firmware, we can get firmware for you. All you need to do is ask.
Feel free to email us at [email protected] for them and we will be pleased to assist.
Thanks
Rob

@ICEBOXAUTO won't help you unless you bought your unit from them...which to be fair to them is reasonable. Besides, I think that they are just as dependent on Witson as we are. Maybe they get more of a response because they sell more but I can assure you that their units are just as buggy as every other WITSON S200 unit out there.
We really are reliant on WITSON listening to our hundreds of emails and putting a bit of effort in to fix the bugs.

Icebox is not a manufacturer which is why I mentioned that they may have more sway with Witson than we do. Witson may not manufacture the SoM but they do produce the motherboard. It seems like there is a company that produces white label SoM and MCU reference designs (which include a white label Android build and MCU firmware) and then Witson integrates both onto a motherboard and then packages that all into a plastic enclosure that suits the car that they are selling for. It also seems as if Witson produce their own custom Android 8 build for their units which is based on the white label design with minor customization implemented by them. The key is that it would be nice for Witson to stay up to date with the fixes implemented in the white label build or to implement fixes into their own builds.
Re MTC this is not an MTC based unit so little to none of the previous theory/firmware applies.

Thanks for the tip. Been scanning around those forums too but there are just people complaining about the quality of the S200 units. Seems that they rushed them out too early and have not taken note of the backlash yet. Will make a few posts to try and raise the issues on the radar.
I got a mail from Witson advertising with witson px5 hardware running android 9. https://www.witson.com/displayproduct.html?id=2669830778766784 It would be awesome if current s200 users could update to this version. I will contact them and ask if this is possible and post my findings here.

But why spend 100 Dollar/Euro for something you already have?
It is already possible to upgrade to Android 9.0 we just need a more stable version.

I asked days ago, but they say it is not possible to update
I think they are lying.
They hope to sell new hardware And an upgrade to PX6 and Android 9.0 will not be possible.
But i hope there will be a core board for the PX5 hardware.

Double post...
I have an older PX3 unit (i think, it's a rockchip rk3188 + 1gb ram, made by Joying) I'd like to upgrade. I've found a PX5 board: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32820356300.html and have been reading stories about BT/WIFI not working. I'm handy with a soldering iron, so I can potentially change out the BT/WIFI module if it doesn't, I'm assuming I'd swap it with this: https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32953209958.html if I run in to problems? Also, is there anything I'd need to do to the unit before swapping out the boards? flash anything? Is there a better board to upgrade to? I've read about PX6 boards but can't seem to find em on aliexpress. In all honesty i think the PX5 would be a sufficient upgrade, since this PX3 is just stupid slow. I don't care about 3g/4g dongles, just really want something that will run headunit reloaded for android auto.
Is your unit an MTCD? Post MCU version.

I took these photos of the unit information, let me know if there's anything else you need. As far as I know its an MTCD unit.

Yes you can upgrade the SOM and WIFI/BT module with the items you list. This is exactly what I did.

Thanks. Is there any prep to do beforehand? or is it just drop in and go? I'll have to solder on that wifi/bt board i suppose, but I mean software wise?

Suggest updating your MCU to latest available. The supplier should ship the SOM with Android installed.

Do you know which one is the latest for my unit? According to the list of cross compatible MCU's it should be 2.56?
I have a new PX5 SOM for sale and also a bricked one if someone is confident using OTG mod to unbrick it. I post to UK only

Hi there as well
Please allow me to give you some advice.
1. The last post in this thread dates back to almost a year ago, so there is little chance of you getting the replies you are hoping for.
2. That gets me to the second point.
You could start a new thread in the Q&A section, with exactly that question you have posted today. Might get you some attention and ideally an answer to your question
Good luck!
Cheers,
mrjuniork
hello, not new to android been modding for many years but this will be my first jump into a android head unit. this will be for my wife's car and she wants the dash to remain stock and anything wider then stock will partially or fully block the middle 2 main ac vents. so she limited me to the standard 7" screen size.
im looking at the max6 and one from xtrons px6 version which does not have the dsp chip but they offered me the chip if i buy the unit from them included.
im reading of some issues with the max6 here at xda and wanted to know if that is the norm with this model? and how is xtrons overall these days i was reading they were decent but those threads seem to be pretty old and i dont want to revive them. otherwise is there any specific model px6 7" unit anyone here can directly recc to me? any help would be appreciated. ive spent hours reading all sorts of threads but many of them are older threads now about px5 or px3 units.
also does anyone expect anything new from ces this year chip wise? though i dont know how many of these china companies show there. i sawe dasaita has in the past.
thanks!

I grabbed the xtrons tq709ipl because its got the px6, is known to be compatible with some roms here, and the price was better than dasiata's comparable px6. Like you mentioned the xtrons doesn't have a DSP, i'm not an audiophile so i don't really know about features I wont be able to judge. What I've read is that the chip in the xtrons even without a DSP is still "better" than most name brand head units out there. amazon is running a $20 coupon right now too (as of 2/19/202), so that was nice. Shipping from hong kong only took 3 days too somehow, so that was cool.
With either of them be prepared to modify the double-din dash kit if you need one for your car. The android head unit faceplates are a few mm larger than North American big brand units like pioneer, jvc, sony, etc.
Good news is I've read enough to conclude all px6 based units are essentially the same guts, and roms will generally work on any of them. So you should just decide: what faceplate you like better between the two, does the DSP really matter to you, and then look at cost and how quick you can get it!
Good luck!
After reading mixed reviews about these things, I want to be sure they can run a custom rom, before buying. Is there anyway to tell?
I have been looking at the 8 core 64gb memory, 4gb memory from Seicane for a Chrylser 300. This one on Alibaba.

Anyone know if this can run custom rom? or a way to find out?
You want an MTCD/E/P, MTCB units are long retired. Ask seller to tell you what the "MCU" is listed as -anything starting 'MTCD or MTCE or MTCP' is such a unit.

Thank you kindly I have asked.
Is there a brand that produces good MTCX units that I can see if they have a unit?

They're all flawed, [GS] MCU Type (Factory) may still be sold by reseller Xtrons and [HA] MCU/Factory Type sold by Dasaita/HotAudio appear to be the better of the bad.
Thanks, they dont make one for my car. Thanks though.
I seen on 300 forums, there was a unit that keeps being suggested Thread goes back to late 17, till about now and all have had good results and units still work. So hopefully they have the right MCU.
