Title basically says it all. I have two Sprint S6 phones and both of them charge and work fine, but no amount of messing with usb modes or Windows drivers work, and I keep getting error 43 device descriptor not responding. I've tried multiple different driver versions, smart switch, side sync, windows, linux, everything. I cannot get these phones detected by a computer. The charge ports visually are perfect, no signs of damage or liquid, and the cords click in nicely. These phones look brand new. Anyway, the whole reason I actually need USB is to have them remotely unlocked, and to root and flash firmware. Now, I'm trying to see if anyone knows how I might go about this without USB access. I was thinking if I could get root without Odin, I could use terminal emulator or flashfire to flash a revocery, then use that to flash whatever rom I want. And for the unlock I was thinking maybe iDoneApps would work? Anyway, if anyone has any insight or suggestions please let me know. I plan on ordering a replacement charge port and testing them, but I doubt that will work since there's no sign of wear of damage to the existing ports (Basically I'm thinking the onboard USB IC is malfunctioning, which isn't on the usb charge port board and instead on the mainboard). So, any ideas?

Now ive been reading a lot and have found mny cases mine included issues with the usb. Aparantly the flex cable end is highly sucseptable to moisture damage. Mine would. Not charge temp to high or low the flex builds up a corrosion which u can clean and lubricate the flex and it may work again. I know of at least one other person with this issue and my fix worked on his too.
You may say well my phones never been wet but from what i read. Even high humidity is messing with them. I followed on of the many disasembly guides. And i furthered with a cooling compound on the internal chips to keep the system cooler. When i reasembled i used a qtip to clean the flex with alchol then a drop of wd40 also with qtip. And then a demoisture paper inside the phone on top of the flex. To make sure it stays dry.
I bought mine s6 for 20 bucks. I figured out that power wasnt coming out of the flex which also has the mtp and other usb funtions on the same cable.I own a electronic repair shop And have most of the equipment to test and repair most electronics. But this ones going on 2 months good now

I pulled a working USB board from a dead Verizon s6 and tried it with the Sprint one I have and it did not work (charged but no detection on the PC, same as the original). It did fix the issue in the Verizon one I had and that phone is now gone. I can disassemble the Sprint one again but I figure if it had the issue with 2 different USB boards and flex cables than it was something on the main board. However, like I said, I tried a Verizon variant cable on the Sprint variant, which have different boards when I order parts but upon inspection look identical. Also, no evidence of corrosion or liquid damage anywhere.
Flashfire and Flashify both need root. Once root is achieved there's a lot I can do, but is there any way to root without USB? Isn't the only method through Odin?

Ive been outa the samsung thing for a while if there is another root method i dont know. Im just now learnin myself on samsungs.
Well I ordered a replacement USB board and swapped it out today, same issue, so it's something on the main board. You'd think with the Stagefright vulnerability there'd be a userland root again like Towelroot. Well, I give up on this one I guess.

Wife's phone usb port is broke. It got mangled by a tough cord pull. It can't be straightened out. plastic is broken and contacts are mangled. After I did some research, I can see this issue happens on quite a few phones with micro usb such as the evo, but i have not seen too many people mention it about the g2.
Anyways, no warranty since I got the hardware from craigsist. Even if there was a warranty htc has not been covering this sort of damage on the evo.
From what i can tell there are a couple of possible fixes and a workaound.
fix one - new motherboard. too expensive
fix two - have a new replacement port soldered onto the existing board. i am not sure if this is worth it. i don't have much soldering experience, so i would probably have to send it somewhere. Does anyone have any idea of what that sort of thing would cost? is it pretty risky in terms of further damage to the board?
workaround - Get an external charger and possibly a second battery to reduce downtime while charging. This is probably what we will do for a while. Does anyone have a solid suggestion for an external charger for the g2? Is the battery the same format as other HTC phones such as the evo?
thanks!
Ah that sucks. From what i think if you know how to open the g2 then you wouldnt have a problem with fix 2 only thing i say is dont F..k up the motherboard lol... yoll have a fully broken phone. Dont know about fix 1.

If you don't need a working micro USB port for connecting to your computer, just pick up one of those power mats that charge your devices by just placing them on the mat.

I looked into the powermat product last night. As far as I could tell, it seemed like they didn't have one for the G2. In that case, they provide a workaround, but it sounds like it also requites a working port of some sort.
"If your specific device is not listed in Step 1, we currently do not have a receiver for your model. By choosing "other" your solution will include a wireless Powercube universal receiver with 7 tips to allow your device to charge on a Powermat mat."
"The Powercube Universal Receiver Allows you to Charge Hundreds of Devices Wirelessly
The perfect accessory to your mat. Seven Interchangeable tips (micro USB, mini USB, Samsung, LG, Apple, Nintendo DSi, Sony PSP) allow you to wirelessly charge hundreds of mobile devices using just one receiver. Works with all Powermat mats."
After reading that, it stops sounding wireless at all. The universal powercube is wireless to the powermat, but it needs to attach to the handset with a cord. Pretty silly for $100. maybe there are other companies besides powermat?
I found a great thread about sanding chintech batteries. I ordered the two pack plus charger and will peel and sand them. So for now, I will use the external charging workaround.

In the meantime, if anyone else has a broken usb microport issue, post up your experience here. The issue seems rampant in the evo's, but maybe not so much on the G2. It is a heck of a small plastic tab in there holding the contacts.
Or get one of those 2 batteries + 1 charger deals on ebay and charge one while you're out and when you run out of battery just swap it. That's what I do and I think it's a hell of a lot more convenient.
Just chiming in
I have the same problem, except my micro usb connector still functions very testily. I have to plug and unplug it several times, and the slightest of jostles will disconnect it. Charging is more reliable than tethering, and I definitely use tethering, as I don't have a wired broadband connection at home. I'd love to get this repaired, if it's not too costly or difficult, so I'm going to watch this thread. Thanks for the suggestions on getting an external charger and extra batteries. If my connector continues to deteriorate, it makes me feel very relieved to know I'll have a backup. Thank heavens this phone has an sdcard slot!
Tethering and file transfer can be accomplished over wifi with some apps. Look for wireless tether and the samba or ftp apps
This is planned obsolescence at its worst. The switch from mini-USB to micro-USB doesn't save any space and makes the plug VERY VERY delicate.
Personally, I would take it apart, unsolder the micro-USB socket from the board, solder in a new MINI-USB socket, and reassemble. It is relatively low risk, as long as you are careful while soldering (use proper desoldering wick to disassemble). Be sure that you don't use too strong a soldering iron -- about 15 watt, and be sure to use one that is GROUNDED (three prong plug).
Thats some good advice. I was not aware you could swap out the interface in that way.
It's actually not quite that simple to change interface. You would first need to find a mini-USB connector having the same alignment pegs (to help with strain relief) and pad spacing as the current micro-USB connector. You will also need to hack the chassis of the phone some as well (and even then, a mini-USB connector will still probably stick out slightly).
Despite what was stated earlier, although both mini-USB and micro-USB have about the same width, mini-USB connectors are significantly thicker (or taller) and slightly longer (as far as depth). Micro-USB actually does give a pretty nice space savings for a hardware designer and can be more robust in design depending on the actual connector used.
Probably easier to just try and find the same connector HTC used if you are going to go through the trouble of replacing it.
I like to know all the great advise I was also worried about this when I just had the EVO. But to transfer files you could use a sdcard slot adapter for your pc or one of those usb sdcard readers I had used that when rooting my g1 along time ago LOL. Thanks for the backup ideas

Thanks, soreyes I already use the wifi tethering now and then, but it really drains the battery and makes the phone very hot. In fact, I accidentally left my wifi tethering on overnight the other night and woke up to a dead battery and a radio that wouldn't work for half the day. I was actually worried I had fried my phone and turned it into an expensive PDA. After turning it off for about 8 hours, it worked fine again, thank goodness.
I definitely hadn't thought of FTP or samba for file transfer, but thanks for the suggestion. I hate taking out the battery to get to the sdcard, just to transfer a file or two.
Having this problem with a G2 as well
I started having charging issues a few months ago, before my warranty ended, but now, I'm screwed and the phone will not charge at all. I know it is not the battery.
I have a G2 from T-Mobile. I took it apart and it looks like the job to get the port off and replace it would not be simple.
Has someone actually completed that task?
Does anyone have the part number on the port? I see several very similar ones on ebay. (search for microUSB and android)
Or, has someone sent theirs off to be fixed out of warranty? I've seen a place called Mission Repair mentioned here and there on the web...
Thanks!

I had always thought (if mine usb port broke) about trying these guys ( www.cellulardr.com ), i mean if your phone is not really working you could check them out to see if the price is right.
I know I sent my itouch off for screen repair and it was worth it.

You might consider buying one of those G2's on eBay with the broken screen, and swapping out the motherboard, then along with that you'd get all kinds of other spare parts, including battery etc.
I've never taken apart the phone, so can't attest to the difficulty, but I've seen a few guides around.
Update on repair options
So I called a local shop and they said that it was too complex of a procedure for them and referred me to Mission Repair in KS.
Called Mission and they said they get several calls a day from folks with G2's/Evos/and Desires with this exact problem. The guy said that in 80% of the cases it is not fixable without replacing the logic board because the issue is often that the logic board connectors break. This is a known issue with these similar HTC phones.
On the other side of things, I called HTC and it turns out these phones have a warranty from 15 months of manufacture, which T-Mobile did NOT inform us about. They said they will take the phone and fix it for free if i hadn't voided the warranty.
Now if only I hadn't open the phone up after the T-mobile rep told me there was no hope. *arg*
So, after a couple weeks of trying to figure out the problem, I have finally narrowed it down (yay me!).
Anyways, when there is a cable (and sometimes not) plugged into the USB Port on the phone, and the port is stressed so that it is angled downwards, all input to the touchscreen goes haywire. I attempted to follow the ifixit guide, however I don't have any plastic removal parts, and using my fingers and nails was becoming really painful, but, I don't think it is going to work, because the headphone port began to come off as well, and judging by the pictures in the guide, that isn't supposed to happen.
Anyways, I am wondering, is there any way to fix this? Possibly other then opening the device up? Or should I just go to the repair store and swap it out?
If I do swap it out, what is my chance that I would get a new phone versus a refurb, seeing as how the phone is so new?

Ive tried this. A new cord actually didn't work for me. I also tried it with a different phone, which is where I came to the conclusion that its the actual charging plug. Something in it is either fried or just malfunctioning. The cause of it is unknown, but luckiliy i have a few micro usb chargers laying around and the rest work fine. You should also ask yourselves the following question: Do you have the same problem when charging thru usb on a Comp? If the answer to that question is no, then its clearly not the USB wire. If the answer was yes, then I just didnt have the same problem as you and you can disregard this entire post.
Hello, my E4GT is having problems charging. Before I start, I should mention that I use this as a wifi only phone, and it is not insured or under warranty.
In order to charge my phone, I have to plug the micro usb cord in and pull up on it in order for it to charge. I have tried different cords, no go. I have taken the motherboard out of the case, and the port doesn't look damaged..... the micro usb port is soldered onto the motherboard, making it hard to replace it.
What should I do? How could I fix this? Does anyone have a working motherboard for sale? I don't care if the ESN is blacklisted or not.
have you tried this?

AFAIK You can actually replace the port without replacing the entire mobo. But honestly you might want to consider a second battery and an external charger as a backup, especially given the state that you mentioned.
There is a guy that has parts available in the marketplace - suggest checking his posts out as well.

I already have an extra battery and an external charger is a great idea! Do you have any suggestions on one I can buy/make? I'm doing some research atm.
EDIT: I went ahead and ordered two of these; one for my home and one for my backpack. This should save me $180 ($200 for a new phone - $20 for these)
So after several weeks trying to figure out what is wrong with my device I came to the conclusion that the USB port on my GNex went bad
here's a few reasons why:
-GNex No longer chargers when plugged in the wall outlet tried several OEM and non OEM USB cables
(but will somewhat charge if the phone is turned off but very slowly and has an error) It shows the battery icon then
it will flash twice the battery charging icon then back to the battery icon with the bolt in the middle and will do that through out the night.
Had a custom rom on there tried changing roms but my computer no longer recognized it and so i've installed removed various drivers
and tried different PC ports and nothing would let it recognize so I manually download a rom on the phone but it wouldn't install.
So I was finally able to odin back to factory stock but that still didn't do anything not only I can no longer go into recovery because it seems to
not have one so I'm stuck and it's getting on my nerves because the only way I can charge it while it's on is plugged into the computer.
I'm my money is that USB port on the phone is malfunctioning so I'm trying to relock the bootloader but can't find a through the terminal, because ADB does not work. Technically the phone still has manufacture warranty. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys
Does your computer recognize it in fast boot?

I had the exact same issue with an old T989 (T-Mo SGSII). Same symptoms and everything. What got me through the insurance claim was that I told them that the phone was doing an OTA but somehow it failed and it was stuck at the ODIN screen. What really happened was the USB port gave way while restoring to stock which caused the soft brick, but after that the USB port was completely nonfunctional. Try re-positioning the USB cable, the port might be making bad contact with the pins. Other than that, I would just ship it as is since they hardly check that the phones are rooted or in your case, an unlocked bootloader.
No it doesn't recognize it in fastboot or anything it says unknown device. As far as sending it back in I've been on the samsung website trying to request a service repair, but I've also purchased the phone on CL. But I didn't have a problem with it for several weeks so I know it really wasn't a defective unit. Yeah, I thought about reposition the USB cable to no avail.
I didn't think about using that... how did you manage to get an RMA or something to get it replaced
So you can use the device itself fine? Cab you go into play store? Download booot unlocker . it locks/unlocks the bootloader from the phone itself

My apologies if it was in the wrong thread. Yes I'm able to use the phone fine and everything it's just the charging and recognition that's causing problems.
Another question what do I need to be able to open a repair request from samsung or how do I go about it. went to the website but all it does is take me to FAQs?
Well unfortunately boot unlocker won't work because I don't have root and I can't root my phone through ADB or anything like that because like before PCs won't recognize phone at all unless there is a method I can use through the terminal editor
I don't want to hi-jack your thread, but I am also having a similar issue.
I am running CM 10.0.0 but the cell phone will charge, but will NOT connect to the computer. I have tried two different cables and on 3 different USB ports on two different computers. I have the Samsung drivers downloaded and installed. I did not have this issue before the unlock/flash of CM. Is this is a known issue? Is there anyway around it?
I'm starting to think its a USB port issue
If it hasn't been said before, this is a very common problem, it even happens with a few Samsung phones. It's not software related, all hardware, the micro USB port is lousy.
Unless you want to work with Samsung, who, based on my experience, will probably want to charge you "because you broke it", there's the incredibly hard-to-find Pogo Dock or the inductive charging mod, which is actually kinda neat I may do that, I already have all the touchstone stuff...
There's also DIY replacement of the USB daughter board or whatever the exact term is.
In any case, Samsung *might* help you, for a decent fee and 2 weeks' (or more) time.
Yes, try to analyze USB port pins for damage, dirt, bent, anything that can cause a lousy connection (or none whatsoever)

Yeah, I mean I would have to figure something out because I can't transfer files and the only to do it is to upload them to the cloud which is not optimal and real pain.
well out of nowhere USB starting working and charging now normally. So that's cool I'm glad now just to wait till ubuntu comes out.
Hey folks, I have a N7 with some issues. I'm bashing my head against the wall on this one. I bought a 2nd gen N7 with a broken screen from some crook on eBay. He neglected to discuss it's other problems, however this is what I have. I replaced the screen, but even before doing so I found that a USB OTG mouse was not recognized (it works on my 1st gen), then I tried my little BT keyboard, BT wouldn't pair... Plug the tab into a PC and the PC completely ignores it. No device in device manager, I can even go to the port the tab is on is device manager and it shows nothing, not even current draw. The tablet does however charge on the PC, and it for some reason thinks that it is on AC charging, not USB. I have tried this on several computers with almost identical results. On a PC with USB 3 ports though, device manager sees it, just says that the device is unrecognized and may have a hardware problem.
So, I managed to get it to connect MTP one time by slightly twisting the USB cable. I then determine it must have a bad USB port, so I ordered some SMD USB sockets when I got other parts for a different project. I replaced the USB port tonight, and nothing changed, it is exactly the same. No data, always thinks it's on AC. On a whim I tried USB while in the bootloader, and it installs the fastboot drivers just fine and I am able to send fastboot commands.
After finding this, I figure it has to be something software or firmware related, so I flash it via fastboot back to bone stock. Reboot system and still no data connection, still thinks it's always on AC. I'm about at my wits end with it. I know there are other ways to move data to the tablet, but only having access to ADB via wifi is lameo and I happen to use USB host.OTG a lot.
Does anyone know what I am missing? I'm thinking it has to be something in the firmware at a level deeper than most the roms and images go. The PO is had it unlocked and cleanrom flashed. I have since tried AOKP, stock 4.4.4, now PA.
On a side note, if there is no fixing this SOB, do any of you know which of the flo roms have native wifi ADB? At least that will help...
Thanks,
Jason
No one has any ideas? No one else has had this issue? What it seems to me is that it is stuck in "USB fast charge mode" that's the only reason I can think that it would think it was on AC still even when on USB. I have tried three different kernels though now and enabled USB fast charge then disabled it, but it doesn't help.
Is it possible for someone to have put it in fast charge mode and made it stick regardless of kernel changes?
Just looking for ideas. Thanks folks!
Later,
Jason
I have exactly the same issue as yours! I couldn't connect my N7 via USB to PC. Gave me USB device not recognised error. I even fastory reset it. However, one time I did twist the USB cable and my device was recognised and it seemed to work fine during that day. I also managed to flash Android L developer's preview on top of that. The following day I started getting the same issue and haven't been able to resolve ever since. Even in fastboot, my device doesn't get recognised. It's the most frustrating thing ever!
Yeah, it definitely sucks. I was convinced it was the USB socket since twisting brought it alive that one time. However, I replaced my connector and it is the same. I then took it apart again and inspected all the traces and solder joints near the USB connector. I was still certain that the twisting meant it was a physical problem. It wasn't until much later that I found that fastboot worked.
I have done a ton of research trying to find an answer, but most everyone just pawns it off as a driver problem. I have tried every fix those people have offered, but it is never seen by the PC on USB 2, and only shows up as "device not recognized" on USB3. I have tried several different computers, but today I'm going to try an old XP machine. Several people seem convinced these issues are due to Win7. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Try flashing 4.4.2 factory image. Maybe it starts working. For me, issues started 4.4.4+. currently I am stuck on Anroid L preview
Quick update, I asked Scott at Asus if he could give us any ideas, he said base don everything I told him that I had tried that it seems likely that it is a hardware problem with the USB board. I'm still not convinced, but the USB board is going to be my last resort.
Other than that, I tried the tab on a win XP computer and XP sees it as "unrecognized device" says that the USB needs unplugged/replugged and if that doesn't work to replace the device... I would think that the data pins are shorted or something, but mine works in fastboot, that is what has me stumped!
I'll try flashing 4.4.2.
Thanks,
Jason
Well, I just flashed back to 4.3.0 which looks to be the original software for this device. It did not behave any differently. I guess I am going to have to look into a new USB board. The things are expensive though, hopefully I can catch a decent used one for a good price. I'll let you all know if I order one and if it solves it.

New board is expensive. *sigh*
Yes they are, and I wouldn't trust ebay as far as I could throw it. I would hate to buy a used one and find out it has the same issue. I have another email into Scott asking if it is possible to buy parts direct from ASUS, and if so, what the board might cost. I'll keep you posted.

I heard back from Scott at Asus. They do not sell any parts. He suggested eBay... I guess I will start a saved search and see if I can catch one for a reasonable price. I can't see dropping $80 on a USB board. I guess if it doesn't fix it I could resell it... Still is retarded. This will make what this tablet has cost me much more than a brand new one Damn the crooked eBay sellers!!!

Oh that's awful! I can't believe they don't sell replacement parts! I guess I have to live with a broken N7. I just hope Google pushes official L release OTA to devices running L preview.
I had a similar issue once. Turned out that MTP mode wasn't selected. Storage >Menu button > MTP should be selected.
