I pretty much already started talking about it in a different thread but I figured I should start a new thread. The issue is a lot of the phones that I've seen are already scratched up in the back and some even on the front. Frankly I'm quite surprised that after one to two weeks these phones are not holding up. I suppose I can always get tempered glass on the front, it's some kind of clear shield on the back but wouldn't you expect with the way Gorilla Glass performed in the past that gorilla glass 5 would have been better? Scratching my head on this one, but thought maybe if we get enough complaints or pictures of it, maybe Samsung or Cornering will address it?

All I've seen are the full-size pics of that particular phone in the crop you made. It literally looks like someone stepped on its face and dragged it along its back on a concrete or tile floor. One scratched phone does not a crisis or epidemic make. Unless Corning wants to go out of business the scratches in that pic couldn't have been from casual use.
Someone in another thread said they placed their phone in their pocket and got a scratch on the front after one day. I just didn't want to hijack someone else's thread so I started this one. Many people have seen the same thing at various locations

I have drove by three different stores with display units and I can confirm that all three units had more scratches already than the other prior gorilla glass phones. I really hope it's not an issue, but they looked bad enough for me to hold off on the preorder till I see some real life accounts.
Two of the phones had similar scratches as the op picture, the last had deep gashes on the screen. I snuck a pic of the last one.
Yup, those are scuffs on the middle of the screen, not smudges. Is it a coincidence all three are banged up? I sure hope so.
Until they decide to make screens out of sapphire or diamond then it'll always get scratched regardless, gorilla glass scratches just as easily as any tempered glass and things like dust or sand particles will always be able to scratch glass.
Don't expect the glass to be better just because the number went up by 1, what's actually made better is shatter resistance.
You all need to understand that Gorilla glass 4 & 5 are same "scratch" resistant. The difference between the two is the Gorilla 5 is less "breakable". Don't get scratch and breakable mixed-up.
I've been a long time samsung smart phone user and I have noticed one thing in common with the 'scratch resistance' on my phones, It seems that the oleophobic coating on the samsung devices gets scratched easily while the only 2 Huawei devices ive owned ( Nexus 6P and P9 Plus ) never had a hairline scratch until this day.
Good Lord - the phone's not even out yet. This is like the RAM thread, one YouTube video showing multitasking being funky has everyone's underwear in a bunch. If GG5 scratches easily we'll know about 30 days after the phone's in people's hands. Same thing for multitasking performance. If the potential for those being problems freaks you out wait a month before buying the phone. All this self-created hysteria and conclusion drawing based on such limited evidence isn't going to alter reality.
I don't get why they haven't included self healing properties to glass screens yet.

It's typically because the self healing nature of the material is plastic not glass and the substrate winds up skewing the optical clarity of the lens.

Lol sure does look like it. There is varying blue colors on the first pic around the edge before the gold rim. Looks ro be the case...nice eye. Didnt notice it until just now.
Wondering if people are "testing" it intentionally on the demo models?

FYI the first image is my pic and not the OP. It's from a tmobile store by my work. I handled it myself and it did not have any protector on it. Here are the originals.
I pointed it out to the rep and he even tried scratching it off lol. Of course it didn't come off. He said they haven't been handing the demo well and has been tossed on the table etc.
Is it possible that Samsung sent these out with substandard glass cause they sent then as display models? Or do they not bother doing something like that? Maybe that's why they scratch easy?

Honestly, you can't just remove the scratch. A screen protector will mask the scratch. Your going yo have to replace the screen. Samsung should have put certified gorilla glass instead of a different fortified glass on the gnex. Think about it. Your not going to go without a scratch in the 2-3 years you have the phone.. so deal with it!

My 5 months of going caseless and without a screen protector disagree =]
You're sorta out of luck here. The phone is coated with a special oleo-phobic coating, so if you try to buff-out the scratch there will be a weird patch that will be noticeable to the touch and eye of where you scratched off the coating, unless you buff out the entire screen, which will give you more scratches most likely. My advice, cover it with a nice screen protector or ignore it until your phone develops more scratches, and then replace the entire screen. It will run you about ~$250 for the display. Honestly, if it bothers you that much replace the screen. You may be able to sell your scratched screen for $100 on Ebay for those people who crack their digitizer.
You can try the XO skins actually really good covering scratches (my brother mess up his phone too ) and cheap too and good warranty even outside US

Hey guys im looking at buying the gnex soon. The only thing holding me back is i keep hearing it scratches very easily. Im not a big fan of big cases and usually use the phone naked. Has anybody that been using it without protector and notices it scratches easy? Ive had a sgs1 for two years and that thing is like a brick. Dropped it too many times and not one scratch. Thanks

i've been using it without a screen protector, for about 4 months now. I generally keep my device very well, i dont over-protect it, but im not careless with it either, i.e. i dont put it in screen first with keys and loose change. so far it's absolutely pristine. It may not be gorilla glass, but it is something very similar. and judging form my experience with a samsung galaxy s 2 even gorilla glass isn't unscratchable, per se.

DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE. EVER.
You will destroy your screen, toothpaste contains abrasive particle that kinda work like sandpaper on tooth enamel, which is very very hard.
get a zagg prtector or something similar, it comes with a gel foam applicant, which fills those scratches and when the screen protector goes onit creates a gapless layer, and you wont be able to see or feel the scratch. Well...at least the scratch wont be very obvious.
My two weeks old GNex, naked for only a week, then i had a scratch, very tiny scratch (between 'F' and 'G' portrait keyboard).
And it only noticeable under the light with a great focus of your eyes. It's okay, I don't like using case.
I can debunk two myths in this and numerous threads: 1. Toothpaste does not work in 'removing' or even masking scratches on the GNex. 2. Toothpaste does not otherwise 'mess up' your screen in trying to fix a scratch (at least using plain, mint Colgate paste )
Like others, I was curious to see if it'd work. I read in numerous sources that kept pointing to toothpaste as a home remedy, however oddly no success stories, but at the same time no stories of ruining your screen either. I tested a tiny spot first, in the corner of the display for 'abrasive' damge. Nothing. I then moved on to the scratch itself - a scratch that's about 3/4" in lenght (I got the phone used at a nice price due to the scratch). I used a tiny bit of plain white toothpaste, a q-tip that was barely damp, and a micro-fiber cloth. I applied the toothpaste ALONG the scratch and not just apply it in swirls, and waited for it to dry. I then buffed the paste off with the micro-fiber cloth. I did this twice. Nothing fixed, yet nothing ruined. So there you have it. That's my story.
I also tried Ghost Armor to mask it. Didn't help at all, if anything you could see it more than just when the light hits it just right 'naked.'
Additionally it looks like the long-term test of that one poster replacing just the GLASS on his GNex was not successful as he recently updated his post saying that various debris has found its way under the screen since his successful replacing of it. Due to this, he specifically says that due to the risk and debris, it's not worth it.
SO.... you either have to deal with the scratch(es), or replace the screen, digitizer, etc or just purchase a new/used device. Currently Gnex's are going for about $260-285 on Ebay auctions (cheaper on CL), while making a few calls to replace my screen fully runs anywhere from $200-250 locally.
However, I've heard stories where folks send their devices into Samsung to get just the glass replaced. If you start a ticket with them, they'll quote you around $163 including shipping both ways. However, there are stories of credit cards not being charged at all and covered under warranty if all they do is replace the glass.

Given how exposed the screen is (which is a plus design wise) it needs to be tough to last most people's contract terms.
Think this is a response to someone doing the same think to a nokia lumia 900 to show how strong the screen on that was.
He's obviously ordered himself an S3 and taken One X bashing to another level!!!

I woke up this morning in a rush, threw my phone in my pocket. Ran out the door to class.
Realized after class when a friend wanted to look at my phone they were with my keys! There are all these little microscratches and a few bigger ones DEAD CENTER.
It isn't too noticeable until light his it from a certain direction.
But I cannot freakin believe that I let that happen. I usually am completely OCD about these things, and I normally put screen protectors and cases on my phone the MINUTE I open the damn thing.
Hell - I do it for all my devices. My laptop, Vita, my gaming consoles, I have protective stuff for everything!
The Note 2 didn't have a Zagg yet, and they list it on their page but it isn't featured or "imaged". The last time I did that with Zagg, the damn thing came to be unpunctured - aka I had to manually cut the material out with a knife (hard as hell to do, near impossible without stretching!)
So I waited one day too long it seems. Screw me right?

Have you returned phones to ATT before? Im not familiar with the process and how easy it may or may not be.
If you get a replacement, they do sell the Zagg Shields for the Note II at Best Buy. When I first bought my Note 2, I immediately drove to Best Buy and picked up the HD version of the Zagg Shield for it! It definitely looks good on the phone. They had the smudge free version of the shield but I'm not sure if it lowers the clarity...

If you're within your 14 day return window, they will just charge you $35 restock fee and give you a new one. Or .. just suck it up.. slap on a screen protector now and you won't even notice the scratches.

Hate to say it - I had the SAME issue.. This is more like spider monkey glass, nowhere near as strong as they say it is.
Mine has a couple small scratches from being in my pocket as well..

Happened to me the 2nd day I had my Note.
I put it in my backpack for less than 15 minutes in the afternoon. THAT NIGHT I got my new screen protectors in the mail and as I was going to apply the screen I noticed the scratches all over the screen.
The glass is NOT scratch proof by any means just because it is gorilla glass. Sure typical metal wont scratch the screen but just about anything else will.
I took it back to ATT and they switched it for a new one, no questions asked for the restocking price of 35 bucks.
I slapped a screen protector on my new Note the minute I opened the box.

Have had phone for a month now and just noticed a 1cm scratch thats barely visible with the eye but can be felt with my fingernail. No idea what caused is ive been babying this. Thats what I get for believing in gorilla glass. Ordered JLG today to prevent future occurences
If it makes you feel any better I cracked the glass completely... I'm also very careful with my phones. It took a 3 foot fall onto pavement (hands not used the size yet) and the glass is completely shattered... it wasn't even 24 hours old. Now I am waiting fr the repair place to get the full lcd+touch+glass screen back in stock - will cost me over $300 to have it fixed.

I'm not sure what kind of glass Sammie is using on the Note 2 but it seems pretty fragile. My original galaxy and moto Atrix handled much worse falls without any damage whatsoever.

hehe I got lucky on my Epic Touch 4G no scratch ,ding or dents.
GN2 screen is larger more prone to damage so I'm using flip cover protection on it.

I think if you are within 14 days you can still exchange it. I did it from bestbuy, I had 60 days though (silver member)

It makes the pen drag significantly, the anti smudge ones I mean. I had to take it off and return it, it was too annoying.

This may seem like a dumb question and i have seen mixed results and various methods. I just bought a used GNex and didn't look at the screen close enough (deal was at night). The scratches are very thin and can only be seen in direct light, you have to look for the scratch most of the scratches expect one. Not noticeable with the screen on, they are very very thin.
Since its very minor it not to bad, but wondering if there is a way to "fill" it in with something. I have heard of Displex, Brasso, toothpaste, Banana and Banana Skin etc all claim to work on touchscreens. But this is an AMOLED screen and is made of glass as we all know.
I know toothpaste can be used on cars, headlights and CD's and actually have used it in the past. But never on a glass touchscreen.
Do you think any method would work?
I'm inclined to try toothpaste, but i heard the screen has a protective coding that will be removed from the screen if toothpaste is used.
The other idea I had which seems dumb is to use Zagg's solution and see many it will fill it in?
PS Yes I know the screen protect will work, but don't want to hide the scratches but rather fix them.

There is no way to "fix" a scratch. It's an actual piece of glass missing. All that could be done would be to wear the entire screen down to that level, which is what the so called repair kits do. For obvious reasons you don't want to wear down the GNex screen.
Yea,there's nothing to do to fix it.you can hide it,but not fix it. You can on non touch screen gadgets,but not on SAMOLED.toothpaste wouldnt work,banana would just make your screen mute,and you for shure cannot brush it out with sandpaper then polish it. Mine has a tiny one on the lower left hand side of the screen, and it rarely bugs me anymore. You can only see it from certain angles. And trust me, I'm a freak about this stuff.
I have some of these. Because you actually have to look for them to see them I don't mind at all. If I could see them with the screen on then I'd be *****ing.
I'm just mad i didn't check the phone enough when I bought it, trusted the guy when he said it has no scratches. Well I'm not going to be using it. Its for my momma, paid $200 CAD which was alright.
The scratches are noticeable with the screen off in regular light, but not with the screen on.
If you want to use a screen protector, the wet apply ones fill in the scratch and make it harder to see.

How did you guys scratch the screen? I don't have scratches at all...well after reading this thread I want to say I probably do and will find a few if I look closely enough...

I've heard that GhostArmour is less rubbery and there's another brand called *exoskin*(not 100% sure of the name) I think which also makes a wet apply screen protector that's better then zagg.

Yeah generally the Wet screen protectors will "fill" in micro scratches. If im not mistaken xoskin gives a lifetime warranty as well right?

Particularly to people who've owned their GS3 for a number of months: has your screen become a oil/fingerprint magnet? It didn't used to be one in the beginning, but now I get it all the time (I got it in July 2012).
Sometimes, I get that odd rainbow effect when the oil just kind of "sits" on the screen. Disgusting, I know, but my hands aren't that oily...it just seems to pick up a lot more of it than it used to!
I just wipe it on my pants (lol): what do you guys do, if yours has this issue?
I think that's a property inherent to every touchscreen. Good thing about this one, though, is that it's very easy to clean.

I have a zagg HD invisible skin. Super easy to clean. Don't even know its there.

If I tilt just right in the light, I do have some faint tiny scratches on the screen, but the "finger smears" are all over the screen (i.e. not localized to the scratches). But, I can see them playing a small part...

The oleophobic coating! That actually makes a ton of sense, as it just attracts oil like crazy. I Google'd it and it's a known problem with Apple iPhones and iPads (even the iPhone 5's manual says the coating will wear off!). Samsung's manual is worthless in this regard, but I don't think they've got anything better than Apple.

Yeah, I think I have two options: screen protector (which will also protect against scratches) or re-apply the oleophobic coating (as stated through this iFixIt guide). Hmm...I need to sleep on this (the screen protector looks a lot simpler, haha).

Yea man mines the same way. When I first got it, it was very resistant to fingerprints now one text message and it's nasty! Have you used any cleaners? I asked my gf to clean my screen and she used windex and I think that may have assisted in taking it off Now I'm using Spigen Ultra Nano Clear and it's great! Anyway, keep me updated if you reapply oleophobic coating. Would like to know how it works!

Oh, HOLY SNIPPETS. I totally forgot; about a month ago, I used a lens cleaner on the screen! I just checked it....90% alcohol. That probably made this a little premature. Shucks. Whale, that's not the worst thing to happen, haha.
Totally! It might be a few weeks until I get everything, but I'll deliver with either the screen protector I chose or how the reapplying of the coating went.

This is exactly what has happened. For this reason, I don't clean my screen unless absolutely necessary.

I used to have Ghost Armor, but after it got all yellow and orange peely, I threw in the trash. Now I use a super cheap screen protector that came with my really nice case, but its a fingerprint magnet.
Can I just apply RainX to it and it will be better? I have RainX in my garage.

Right...I didn't know about RainX working here (wouldn't it stop hydrophillic things, like water, but not hydrophobic things, like oil?), but it also only lasts 3-4 months on a car (http://www.rainx.com/tips-information/faqs/), so maybe 1 year on a phone? How do you know it's safe to use on the phone?
Yes, the Fusso I listed above; it again only lasts for 3-6 months. Here's a review posted last week of someone using it on their iPad: generally positive, but a commenter also mentions some car waxes as cheaper alternatives.

Since iPhone also uses gorilla glass I wouldn't think it would be a problem. But I'm still waiting on someone to try these products first!

From what I've read the best way to clean your screen is to use distilled water and a microfiber cloth. Supposedly the toxins in tap water can be harmful to your screen. You can get a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store for like 70cents, which is what I've been doing since I bought my screen protector and so far oleophobic coating is still intact!

Unless you're living somewhere where the tap water is not treated, there shouldn't be any toxins in your tap water. If there are, you've got much bigger problems than oily smartphone screens... There will be some minerals in there and maybe fluoride. I doubt there's anything in tap water that would damage your screen, not that there's anything wrong with using distilled water. In either case, a damp microfibre cloth or a drop of water on your screen wiped with a microfibre cloth should be very effective at cleaning the screen and probably much safer than alcohol or solvent based cleaners (although the literature I've read on Gorilla glass suggests it's resistant to alcohol, acetone and a number of other chemicals, but maybe over time they do wear down the coating).

I personally wouldn't put a lot of faith in anything from Monster (maybe they're better now but to me they will always be the company selling ludicrously overpriced HDMI cables and suing anyone with "monster" anywhere in their name regardless of context). But this product looks interesting. It seems to be similar to the original coating used on Gorilla and similar glasses.
I'm wondering if it adds scratch resistance and reduces visibility of existing scratches. If so, I think I'd prefer adding a coat of this every 3 months than using a screen protector. I have a semi-broken HTC phone with the original Gorilla Glass which happens to have a small but visible scratch on it. I think I'm going to order one of these and use the HTC screen to test it on. If it works well I'll try in on my S3 which has a much bigger scratch. I suspect it will be very difficult to photograph but I'll post results when I get it.

Wouldn't it be simpler to put on a screen protector? I've had a screen protector on mine since day 1 (not even costly, I think I got like 3 for less than $10), and its still going strong... hard to say its even there
