How to update my Verizon M8 to Marshmallow - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Verizon M8.
All i want is to update my android version from lollipop to marshmallow.
I've searched for long and i just want you guys to tell me the easiest way to do it, thanks.
I'm s-on.

I take it you actually are not on the Verizon network?
If that is the case, you will have to search around for the Verizon version RUUs. The links previously posted were removed by request of the poster.

I started the proccess as you said and during the installation i got an error [170] said my phone is not recognized.
I also tried to install again HTC Sync and the error still there, and my phone was connected correctly.

Sunshine s-off should work. But you need to root with kingroot, if the built-in Sunshine temp root doesn't work.
Now, updating by official RUU versus s-off and custom ROMs (or other "unofficial" means) is a personal choice.

1) Mods won't like you posting a question in the Dev thread... there are specific sections (general, firmware, etc) where you can post it...
2)Considering that your phone is practically new, if you only rooted it and haven't installed a custom recovery, you will be able to update your firmare (OTA) through the built in upgrade process on your phone. Once, that is done, root your phone and install a custom recovery like TWRP.
good luck

Yes, I sure do.
First of all, if you want the newest ViperOne, you'll want 5.0.1 firmware, at least.
Hook up to you PC. Get into ADB/fastboot, and issue the command fastboot getvar all.
Post the readout here, and I, or someone else, will point you in the proper direction to update your firmware.
Please make sure to delete the serial# and IMEI from the readout. Never post those in a public forum.

Okay. This will update your firmware. Backup anything important to you, because this will wipe your phone.
Go here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-att/news/
Scroll down to where it says "Manual system update instructions". Read what it says, then click the download link at the bottom.

Yes, but that's easy. Unlock your bootloader, flash TWRP, and flash a rooted ROM, such as ViperOne.
Also, I recommend not using one click toolkit methods. They often cause problems, plus doing it manually is easy and gives you an introduction to ADB and fastboot, making it less intimidating.
I don't know how to do it manually =( last time I tried I hard bricked my m7

You need to re-lock your bootloader first if you are not S-Off.
Get back into fastboot and do fastboot oem lock, then leave your phone connected, and run the RUU again.

I don't know.
Maybe you don't have the drivers installed on your PC.
Go to Device Manager with your phone connected. You should see that your M8 is connected.
If you don't see it in Device Manager, download HTC Sync Manager and run it to install the drivers. After that, uninstall HTC Sync. It doesn't play nice with ADB and fastboot. The drivers will remain.
Then go to Device Manager and confirm that your phone is listed there when connected..

Possibility of Xposed Working?

Hello, first of all I've never owned a HTC phone and so I hope nobody minds me posting a speculative question. Based on previous HTC phones, is it likely that Xposed and Gravity Box will work with the HTC 10? The reason I ask is I own some very sensitive earphones and so need the feature in Gravity Box to increase the volume steps to 50? Othewise being restricted to the normal 15 steps is quite punishing for my ears. Thanks.
The HTC 10 unlocked version will support bootloader unlocking so Xsposed will definitely be able to be installed. The HTC 10 sprint version should as well, sprint has never disabled the ability to use HTC Dev to unlock the bootloader. Verizon is another story. They block HTC Dev and we don't know if the unlocked version will work on Verizon that is still TBD. It should but i would never leave anything Verizon has a finger in up to chance. Another possibility might be like the Verizon M9 that people were able to unlock using a java card. Only time will tell for verizon but if you have another carrier I would not worry.
The phone needs to be rooted to install xposed. In addition to the other stuff needed, unlocked bootloader...and highly recommend s-off when that happens. Foolish to not S-Off a phone and start messing with it. Brick city.
Yes. Xposed is MM compatible.
Haven't heard yet if they'll update Sense Toolbox for 8 (Mikanoshi doesn't think he'll get access to a sense 8 dev device) and mods are a case by case basis for compatibility. Give it time and eventually most of the popular mods will get updated.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
xposed would be no problem at all.. You would use the sense toolbox though instead of gravity box. Although now that sense is so stripped down, I suppose some things would also work from gravity box.
Hey guys
I've google searched this quite a bit, but I'm having an issue installing xposed to the HTC10.
I go into Recovery (using TWRP) and try to install the XposedFramework .zip file, but I keep getting : Failed to mount "/system"
Any ideas how to fix this and get Xposed installed ?

yes, works perfect, make sure you get the DVDandroid version xposed installer that you have to use with it. Gravitybox works quite well with the HTC10, xposed settings in playstore is also updated to work, as well as XinternalSD, which will allow programs to write to the internal SD. hope that helps

Looking to root my Verizon HTC 10 to disable their stupid "Connected to WiFi" notifications (which perplexingly isn't an option to disable like on some of their other phones), but I'm not clear if this is possible yet... has anyone here successfully gotten it to work? The link in a previous comment is dead. I'm so frustrated with Verizon, soldering FM radios dead wasn't enough?

You can only root your verizon 10 by doing s-off first using Sunshine ($25). Might not be able to anymore after the Nougat update comes out.

It doesn't crash exactly. RUU use 2008 C++ package which Windows 10 doesn't have. Once you have that installed the RUU will run properly.

You'll be on the latest build yes. RUU are not step-by-step upgrades like OTAs. They wipe everything on the device (except external sdcard) and install the build they were made for.

I ran the ruu and my wifi calling is now spotty. My phone is about 2 feet from the wireless router right now and wifi works but wifi calling can't connect. US Unlocked.
**I actually just saw the issue is in the new Leedroid.

I think I messed up again

For starters, I have an AT&T HTC M9. I unlocked the bootloader, and after a while, got TWRP 3.0.2.0 installed as the custom recovery. I decided to flash ARHD, since that's my personal favorite that I've used on my M7 and M8. After flashing and clearing cache, the phone optimizes apps, reboots, and then stays at the HTC screen for a bit. Finally, the screen will turn off as if it's booted in. I could then wake the device and adjust volume and such, but I still had the HTC logo covering what would be the UI. After a bit more time, the setup menu finally came up. I couldn't set up wifi, as it got stuck on the "connecting" screen. Wiped, re-flashed ARHD. Same thing. Finally got through the setup, and I had no service. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install a corresponding firmware or something? This happens to me every time. Also the M9 had Android 6.0 with Sense 7.0, for the record.

The thread says it's built off of 3.35.401.12, and my phone is running 3.38.502.12. The thread goes on to say "- If your current firmware version doesn't match ROM firmware version, wiping data inside AROMA is highly recommended!" so I figured if I wiped the data inside AROMA it would still work. "For Sense-based roms you just need to re-flash the stock boot image of your current firmware version." I'm now at a loss. I am in way over my head right now. So technically speaking, I'd be able to get ARHD to run on my ATT M9? That quoted sentence gave me an anxiety attack.
Edit: I've got an RUU that I was thinking of using and then just rooting the stock ROM and then going about my day. I'd be ok with that if I knew for a fact that it wouldn't remove TWRP. That and I was looking forward to the ARHD battery life.

Keep calm. All you need to do is downloading the RUU for your current firmware and the decryption tool that is linked in my thread. Drag'n'drop the RUU onto the *.exe file of the tool and wait some minutes. When it's finished it will give you an output folder. Inside you'll find a firmware folder and inside that one you'll find the needed boot image. All you need to do then is booting your phone to download mode and connecting it via USB with your pc. Copy the boot.img into your adb/fastboot folder and use
Code:
fastboot flash boot <enter name of the boot image - including its file extension - here and delete the less/greater symbols>
E.g. if the file is named boot_signed.img the command would be
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot_signed.img
The next time you boot your rom everything should be working, fine.
Edit: Your edit didn't exist when I wrote this post... The RUU will remove TWRP if you flash it. RUUs always reflash the whole phone (in other words: the system and the firmware).

It appears that I may have given some misinformation. Looking in the ROM that I had flashed (Official Build ATT 3.38.502.12 ROM 7-12-2016), the firmware appears as (obviously) 3.38.502.12. However, looking in download mode, OS appears to actually be 3.38.502.41. Are the instructions you gave me still pertinent, or do I need to try something else?

However, looking in download mode, OS appears to actually be 3.38.502.41. Are the instructions you gave me still pertinent, or do I need to try something else?

In that case you will need the boot image of firmware 3.38.502.41. The correct firmware version of your phone is stated in the download mode. You're lucky since HTC released a RUU for that firmware, as well.
There are two main problems with HTCs website:
a) They only provide RUUs for their US customers. So be happy that you bought a US varaint of the M9.
b) They don't update their website that regularly although the files are already available. Since the URL isn't that complicated you can simply guess the correct one for newer RUUs.

Done deal. So after flashing ARHD and then re-flashing the boot image, I can happily go on my way with a nifty AT&T M9 with ARHD?

Based on my previous experiences with the M9 I'd say yes.

Thank you for preventing me from dying today. I'll see what I can do. Also, I was sitting here, looking at the HTC site, and I found all the ROMs, but for the life of me could not find the right one. That was when I noticed you had linked it to me. Now I'm actually wondering where you're finding these.

On their website. Take a look at the URL of the download for the older 3.38.502.12 RUU you can find there, then take a look at your current firmware. If you now look at the link for the latest RUU I posted you'll understand how I guessed the correct link. It's no magic.

Ok, so I flashed the ROM, (ARHD 20.0, 6.0, Sense 7.0) and then flashed the boot. Phone boots up fine, I now have signal and data, but there is one issue. I have no wifi. Is this...radio-related?
Another edit: I also don't see SuperSU anywhere, and that's confusing me just a bit.

No, the radio/baseband doesn't deal with the WIFI reception. There are other parts of the firmware like the wcnss that are responsible for that. You may want to ask in the dedicated rom thread for further help. I haven't heard of such wifi problems before.
In regard to your edit: I never flashed ARHD. I can't even tell you whether it's using SuperSU or any other superuser app.

Alrighty, so it appears support has ended for ARHD. I'll go ahead and ask in the thread anyway, but out of curiosity, I checked out Viper. Looks like that won't work with AT&T. I'll try out ICE maybe. I need more practice.

Well, you could use viper. You just need to choose default in the aroma installer. But I don't know whether your reception is supported out of the box or not. And since viper 5 is based on a HTC 10 port the boot image trick might not work, either. Viper 4 on the other hand should be working fine in case you need to reflash the boot image since it's based on the latest wwe M9 firmware.

I guess my signature should be sufficent for answering that question.
(And yes, I do know that my firmware and the TWRP version I'm using are outdated. I didn't have the time nor the motiviation that would be needed for updating them. I'll probably just wait until HTC distributes android 7 for my SKU.)

I hope I'm not taking up too much of your personal time from asking such questions, as the thread's original question has been answered. I'm currently looking at how to install 5.3, because it looks like a wonderful ROM to have.

Flash it like any other rom. The aroma installer is actually pretty straight forward. Choose default since there is nor AT&T specific installation.
Just make sure that you read what it wants you to do. Sometimes it asks which apps you want to install and sometimes which you want to uninstall.

Root on Unlocked Version?

Hello,
So I bought the HTC 10 directly from their store a few months ago, and have been considering to root it. The thing is that when I look up the Model Number on the HTC, it say "HTC 10" as well, no info. Is there a way to find it's actual MN if it's hidden (as I assume)?
Let me know if there's any other info needed. Thank you in advanced.

You'll need fastboot.
Reboot into download mode (hold volume down and restart the phone), and from your computer type
Fastboot getvar all
Your model number will be listed as MID.
Or, if you bought it from HTC directly and haven't modified anything you'll be able to tell by the software number in the phone's settings. It'll be something like 2.x.y.z. The three digit y number will be something like 617 (u.s unlocked, model ID 2PS65000) or 401 (wwe, model id 2PS62000), for example.
But you don't really need to know that to root. You just need to unlock your bootloader using HTCdev website and then follow instructions for root on xda.

I have the ADB files and fastboot together, but won't show up within the cmd window. Anynthing I'm doing wrong? OEM's unlocked and USB debugging's enabled

Honestly I'm not very good at troubleshooting adb issues. I would suggest you follow instructions on the HTCdev website for bootloader unlocking, they tell you how to install fastboot. Else there are tons of guides on xda or YouTube.
Also make sure you disable HTC Sync Manager on your pc, if you have it.

No you don't need it. Just make sure you have htc drivers. One way of doing that is, I believe, is to install htc sync manager but then remove it while keeping the drivers.

I successfully got the bootloader unlocked, installed latest TWRP, but upon installing the supersu the forums made to bypass dm_verity and the forceencrypt, it went into a bootloop.
There was a red message saying something among the lines of, "This is for developers only..." and whatnot, and simply kept looping.
Thankfully I made the backup, so I restored it. But I'm stuck at the SuperSU part.
If anyone knows why it is doing this, please let me know.
I should also point out, twrp was able to decrypt my phone's data when creating the backup, so not sure if this would mean I need to intentionally install an older TWRP, just so with that version, they fail decryption.
Sorry for bothering, got it working. Have Nougat, so I didn't knew I needed another different SuperSU

Yeah, thank you for your help, btw.
Only current issue I'm having is trying to set up Adaway, since it requests S-Off. (Which I'm concerned of, since idk if doing so and letting the app do it's thing would unencrypt the data) So wondering it it's wise to do so.

Why is Adaway asking for S-Off? Not even sure it should be able to see your s-on/s-off state. Root access is all that it should be requesting.
S-off with sunshine won't touch your data partition. But I wouldn't pay for S-Off just because Adaway is asking you to.

Oddly, it went and started working now, at first it requested to create something that required S-Off. Hmm, perhaps I must of tweaked something for it to no longer need that.
I have one more doubt, but I feel this one may be better to be done as a new thread instead.
