Hi
I've got the EU variant of the G4, I am on the latest MM firmware, now am pretty sure we'll get N sometime in the future. But back to MM, I have not received a single update since buying the phone (I have had it for a few months), the security patch is of January 2016 (didn't LG say they will update flagships to the latest patch often? ). There are a few issues e.g. stuttery multitasking. Any other regions got any updates? I believe the US carriers ones at least got security patches. What are your experiences like?
I have not revived an update either, i just flash the Android kdz files to get the latest version
Same here , never heard if LG rolled out any security patch in EU and Asia region after January . and i am pretty sure next one will be rolled out with N update.

Try LG Bridge. Are you on carrier unlocked H815 version? I received June security patch more than a month ago.

Yeah it is a bit stupid, I remember back when stage fright was in the news they said they'd make these security updates a priority-looks like that went out the window. :silly: I mean not even a patch update has been pushed out, the UI and multi tasking could be smoother + they could fix the new quadrooter security risk.

I also have unlocked bootloader H815 rooted - I agree that we need some fresh updates, especially for quadrooter, however, you should not be experiencing "the UI and multi tasking could be smoother" - I cannot imagine how my phone's UI or multitasking could be any smoother, it is the smoothest of any phone in the world - try adding AdAway and Trimmer and wipe all your caches in TWRP
I contacted LG Spain and their answer was that they don't know when will be another update. Their nonsensical excuse was that they have to test Google patches.
Last LG for me, if they can't even abide to their promises I don't trust them.

I have previously owned vanilla Android devices which out perform these third party manufacturer devices no doubt (LG G4 included), the only downside to vanilla android is the lack of features/themes, it is just plain boring. I have choppy performance when switching apps and navigating the UI-it doesn't feel as smooth as it should be for a flagship.

They've had plenty of time to test patches, other manufacturers have updated their devices to much newer patches.

We need to get to the bottom of what is fouling up your G4 performance - I have owned every Android flagship (I sell phones) including every Nexus flagship and there is no phone that is smoother or faster when switching apps and navigating the UI than a properly set up LG g4 H815 bootloader unlocked and rooted under MM.

Wow really? I previously had the OnePlus X which outperformed my G4 in every way. I am not saying the G4's software is slow, but it is definitely slower than vanilla android. I am not rooted, and am on generic firmware. On average how much free RAM do you have?

Yeah, to get performance that is faster & smoother & more responsive than OnePlus X, you need to have an LG G4 bootloader unlocked, rooted, and any LG/Google bloatware removed.
Update!
Just got an update today, from version V20d to V20g. I can't see any difference apart from an update for the security patch (Jul '16) and a newer version of Google Photos preinstalled. I have only used it briefly. Though it seems minor it is an update nonetheless.

Samsung have disappointed me with updates for a while now. I'm ditching Samsung from my note 3 after 4 and 5 have failed to impress. I'm considering the nexus 6 2015 but this new Sony has caught my eye. What are Sony like for updates on unlocked phones?
How much wait is there between a new android version and sony releasing theirs generally. Do they have a set policy on how long they support device updates.
Thanks
What do you mean by "unlocked" phones? Do you mean phones with their bootloader unlocked (which you can still update via Sony's own Flash Tool or carrier-unlocked phones?
The wait between a new Android version and Sony releasing it has improved significantly through the years. This is, in my opinion, largely due to them no longer loading as many propriety software on their phones and keeping as close to AOSP as possible.
And no, there is no set policy on how long they support device updates. But if you refer to a recent official statement on Lollipop 5.1 rollout, you'll notice that they included the Xperia Z, which was released back in Feb 2013.

I meant carrier unlocked. I'll buy sim free whatever I choose.
Thanks for that info.
How soon is significantly?
My note 3 took until around june/july to get lolipop, even then it's full of bugs with no 5.1 in sight.
Sony began its rollout of 5.0 in mid-March: http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2015/03...lollipop-rollout-xperia-z3-xperia-z3-compact/ in certain markets, and continued to do so in batches in end-March, early-April and finally early-June for the older Xperia Z.
My Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition is still (officially) on 4.4.2. Doubt it'll ever get to lick a lollipop.
Sony is notoriously slow to update.
Sony is not slower than the others, and my z3 compact got updated directly to 5.0.2 though I don't really remember (March/April) when that happened and got updated to 5.1.1 around late July. Having had an s5 at the same time, I find them more reliable than Samsung as far as updates are concerned. And flashing a different official firmware to get updated quicker is really easy too.
---------- Post added at 11:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 AM ----------
Also my old Z1 still gets the updates just a few weeks after my z3c.
Been with Sony since K series years ago. I have to disagree. They are usually last to the table. Plus their rollout structure is archaic. One region at a time for up to six weeks, ridiculous.

I've been using Sony devices since K750 and they have improved when it comes to update rollouts. In my own experience, Samsung is the slowest to roll out, given the mind-bogging number of models they have. Like I mentioned earlier, my Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition hasn't even seen Lollipop yet and I doubt it will ever be rolled out for my device.
My Z1 has gotten more than 5 updates and its still on version A that means that its still gonna get updated to newer version, i have to say they have improved really really much in these last few years ! they have really started to update more and for bit older flagships too ! for me id say when google relases update, then 2-3 months and sony relases and update comes to my phone about a week after that. im on nordic region (sim free ofc) but i heard there are some delays on some regions, could be 4 weeks even. Carriers are always slow to convert, good thing they dont do that in here !
Having owned the Z3 on T-Mobile, I personally won't buy another Sony device unless the bootloader is unlocked/unlockable. To pay that big of a premium is one thing, but to pay it on a locked device is another. Fool me once....

When do we get some updates with some fixes and security patches ??? I am tired of waiting and i am seriously disappointed .... LG is worst right now with their updates ... It seems updates roll out only in Turkey and we need explanation why ?
The battery life is WORSE and im thinking to buy Nexus device... LG.. you are loosing customers ...
If You are on H815 ,flash the brazilian kdz. Security Patch is 01.05.2016
I had terrible experiences with Android devices over the last months. Got an S6 edge+ only to find out that Samsung didn't want to send the updates to my country and decided to give the monthly updates only in 3-4 countries. TouchWiz was better than the older version but still heavy bloated and laggy in comparison to other devices. Then got 2 Nexus 6P only to find out how poorly they made them. Bad screens with heavy partially tints and low brightness overall. Rattling buttons, rattling cameras, poor audio quality in calls, poor audio quality through headphones with low volume output, and scratched oleophobic coating. Returned both and never went to Nexus again. Now Im on LG G4. It's one of the fastest phones I ever had. Feels even faster than the 6P in daily usage with many apps installed. But alas. The battery drains like hell and I saw no updates yet. Sometimes Doze is not working though I had this on the 6P too sometimes. Dunno what's causing it. There is no point on going to Nexus 6P atm. In few months the new Nexuses will come out maybe they will be better.
Same here, LG G4 stuck in January update, but my battery it's ok. 2 days on usual use ~4h of display on with 4G mobile data on from time to time. I just don't get it why all the non EU regions got all this security updates and updates, but for EU nothing, just silence! The Brazilian kdz, it's not a go, from what I read for some users of H815 the update crush the phone and the bridge application prompted to update to 20d version, witch is the current January update... so the last choice is to wait or go to a cooked room in witch case you lose the warranty! Over all I love the phone, the camera it's the best point in this point, but for the end of the year I wish to switch to something new, or the S7 or the next Nexus.
I agree with you guys. This is not serious at all LG... I was impressed when I saw on XDA that LG will be one of the first to release MM, at that time I did not even own this device. But it is not enough to release one build and completely forget about it for almost half a year, we all know new software is good but it requires at least 3 major updates to be properly optimized and polished. Just for example look at windows, every time they released a new version it required at least two 1 GB updates to make it super stable. So what I wanted to say that if you release a new software you have to maintain it otherwise it's not gonna work, look how many revision there are already for MM in AOSP, obviously many of them are related to Google phones but there's a lot of improvements for the OS as well.
P.S. What about L, did you get any updates or they didn't even release 5.1? Because G3 I think still has 5.0...
i know. i'm checking daily for the security patch ,or even 6.0.1 to get the new UX,but i guess all we have to do is wait . Worth the wait because the phone is a beast with or without the security update. i don't mind at all ,when it comes,it comes . Just enjoy your phone
Even my Note 4 has a newer security patch! smh

i'd rather wait for LG official's UX since i'm sure that we will get it soon.
Looks nice anyway .
I can only agree. Also still stuck on the January security update. Where are those promised monthly updates LG?! Getting really fed up with this.
I think the ux 5 update will get things a little better but not too much. LG G5 doesn't get tons of battery life
I downright lost my confidence on LG. They never updated my G4 while on Lollipop past the 5.1 version, even when every other respectable brand was already on 5.1.1 for a long time. I had to update using LGUP and I don't think we will see a 6.0.1 update. I'm afraid all we're gonna get is some promise to update to N somewhere in the future. Hopefully, I will have moved to Nexus by then.
just got a g4 i too am dissapointed in the lack of updates but if they change to the new lg skin i wont update need my appdraw without using a custom launcher

That would be great if all of LG G4 users were able to unlock the bootloader but, sadly, that's not the case. I'm also stuck with the last sec update from January and this shot hasn't gotten any major update since then, or at least an official bootloader unlock solution. This is going to be my last LG device from now on, I'll go for a developer friendly solution, maybe from Oneplus or other.

Yeah, the real problem is that we can't unlock our G4's bootloaders. I have the h815p and the thing is bootloader-unlockable. I would've installed CyanogenMod a long time ago if I could.

Mine just did that yesterday. *sigh*
So much potential for this phone but I have been nothing but disappointed ever since I got it. The only thing I really like is the screen and camera.
How about calming down and flash the latest 20H by yourself via LGUP? Or flashing TWRP and switch over to CyanogenMod? At least, you HAVE (!) the ability to. Many other users of the G4 don't have this feature, because of the weird manner of LG, not letting them unlock the bootloader. Be proud and now: Go flash something.
With the bootloop problem it's very dangerous to go to custom rom..
Mine was repaired several days ago, new motherboard and battery ... My friend works for Lg and he said that new motherboards are improved from last ones and some components on motherboard are changed improved .. They said that there will be no bootloop problem but the software on the phone is outdated ... january sec. patch ??? crappy ... I tried flashing couple roms and somehow the stock rom is the fastest and the camera is the best, but there is overheating and performance drop in games ... They just need to fix that and the phone will be beast again

You are absolutely right on this. I tried multiple roms
but somehow all them lack the snappy performance of stock. Not only this but I have better battery life on V20H than any other of the major roms. It's hideous they can't deliver 6.0.1 and some security patches. Considering 6.0.1 is just a minor update we should have get long ago. At this point LG seems to not care about anything. They are just a terrible company. No wonder their mobile department is sinking .

You can find the UK V20H somewhere here in the forums. Use LG UP to flash it. 1mins work. You can use the LG backup in your SD card and restore it after you flash V20H. V20H performs way better than V20D you will see clear difference.

Seconded, with LGUP making things so easy, there is no need to moan about lack of updates.
More people need to contact them via their security site perhaps?
This is the reply you will probably get but at least it will remind them people are annoyed with the delay.
LG G4 has many branches, so security patch schedules has some differences as depending on regions and carriers.
Mostly security updates of LG G4 will be released in July or August
Again, we are apologize at late security patch.
Sincerely,
LG PSRT

This is what it says on their site:
LG security updates will include all the security patches released by Google and patches for LG-specific security issues. LG recommends all users update their devices to the latest SW. All SW updates include all the available security patches at the moment of release.
LG Security Update Models1 :
- G series (G3, G4, G4 Stylus, G5), V10, CK, G Stylo
1 Depending on regions and carriers, updates may be released monthly, quarterly or irregularly. LG plans to expand the list.
And the LG G4 H815 being their most popular phone from last year only receives irregular security updates??? I don't get it. Something must have happened that they aren't willing to tell us, maybe doing software updates are killing the old motherboards and they don't want to have to replace them for free? => Limit free replacements by not providing the updates at all? Just speculating....
The LG security team just wrote back....
"We asked our dedicated team about your question.
Security patch plan of your device is scheduled to release the end of this month.
Again, we are very sorry for your inconvenience."
At least now we know they haven't totally forgotten this device.
Today I got sick of waiting too... I installed LGUP and flashed the UK 20h ROM. There's really nothing to it and it was just inertia that was holding me back. So far it doesn't seem much different to 20d (I was already getting decent battery life with that) but time will tell.
What I'm wondering is, will I now get notified OTA of updates to the UK ROM I've installed or to the generic international 20d that I was on before? i.e. do they use the current ROM ID to determine whether you're eligible for an update, or do they use some unique identifier corresponding to the phone?

Quite the opposite.
Once you install TWRP recovery you're safe to do whatever you want.
Do we agree you have to unlock the bootloader to install twrp ?
1. Title says it. How are updates for this phone? Phone was released in Q4 2018. How many updates did you receive so far?
2. What is The current security patch?
3. Are there any noticeable bugs? Has the auto-brightness bug been fixed?
4. Which variant do you have? Global or Chinese?
5. Does Google Pay work?
1 - Updates are ok, usually they release an update/month i could say...
2 - I'm on security patch v. 195 and i won't update to 198 for now... battery issues has been reported regarding the 198 Update...
3 - I can tell you one of the bugs i notice... the square virtual button ( from all 3 on-screen buttons ) dissapear in some apps and i have to get back to Home Screen to have it again on-screen... Auto Brightness keep activating after every restart of the phone...
4 - I have 2 Mate 20 X Units, both of them AL-00, i choose AL-00 since several people have been saying they are much more stable compared to International Version...
5 - I don't use any of the Google Services, except PlayStore and Youtube... So for me, there is no point in buying International Version of any phone, since i don't use G Voice, G Pay, G Mail, Google Search, G Assistant etc...
Cheers

I have the L29. Updates for the global versions are still abysmal but better than they used to be. Every new EMUI release fixes a few bugs but brings a few more. It almost seems like the head EMUI team are a bunch of thirteen year olds with not a lot of common sense. A few bugs that I see:
-Notifications on the Always on Display are pretty much non existent (in 2019 that's just not acceptable)
-Set the DPI (Minimum Width) setting in developer options and it resets after every reboot (stupid)
-After a reboot auto brightness turns itself back on. This should be a simple fix right?
-The whole interface needs an update as it looks like the interface from Android Honeycomb, the pulldown toggles and interface are awful in 2019. Why not just have a stock like interface with the rounded toggles?
-After an update is approved it sometimes takes weeks to get it
-Notifications that you can normally turn off in settings for some reason on EMUI they don't work or the options were just removed
The actual hardware is second to none but the phone really needs an AOSP custom ROM or Lineage. Imagine if we could run something like Pure Nexus on the 20 X? I think then it would be the perfect phone but EMUI definitely holds it back. For me the hardware is so good that I can kind of live with these annoying bugs but if they aren't fixed in the next EMUI release then this will be probably be my last Huawei device. Then I still have to hope that another manufacturer has the balls to release a device with a large screen like the 20 X.

Mate 20 X holds a monopoly in terms of 7-inch screen flagship.
Wish there was at least an Android One device with this screen size. Or from a manufacturer who doesn't block custom ROMs.
Only next large phone to look forward to is the Mi Max 4 but that's a mid-range with sub-par screen...
A 7-inch Pixel would be bomb.

A 7 inch OnePlus device would be great too.
The international version lacks updates tbh, I'm stuck on 184 still
For me those small bugs doesn't matter.
I love this phone and i dont care small updates, works great for me really.
But still strange they cant fix some minor fail... But like it a lot... Still
1- 1 update since December (.184)
2- 1 January 2019
3- I get a 'ghost' vibration/notification from time to time, still haven't figured out what causes it (app or OS). No big deal.
4- European (C432)
5- Yes

With the bezels disappearing I honestly think the world is ready for a 7.3''-7.5'' screened phone.
They should have 2 versions, a 7'' MAX and a 7.5" MAX+.
This phone is the best I ever saw and had, but lack of updates for C636 is annoying

What is the C636?
Do they update it by according where you live or which version of phone you have? Like UK, Global, CH, HK and so on.
C636 is the international version, they update AL00 which is Chinese version and C636, regardless of your area.
I have the C432 (UK version, unlocked) running 9.0.0.172 (December 2018 Security Patches) and I've received no updates for the phone at all.
Checking for OTA updates and via HiSuite - both report back that the software is up to date.

Same for me in the UK too. Bought an EVR-L29 from Currys yesterday and was disappointed to find out that it didn't come with the M-Pen and flip case like a lot of other retailers in the UK do, and then it seems to be stuck on release .172 when I have been reading about .195 upgrades being available for quite some time.
I keep checking the software update and HiSuite in the hope that it will eventually trigger an update, but I am disappointed considering it was not a network branded phone.
Fingers crossed for an update soon.

I have ordered the phone from Clove UK so I assume I should also expect no updates. VERY disappointed to hear that and exactly the thing i was afraid about since my Mate 9 received only ONE update in 2 years (was Asia version i think as it is 636)

EVR L29 here. The only update I had was when I first booted up the phone when I bought it over 2 months ago, but had no updates since. I'm on 172. Huawei needs to up their game, the software is so buggy compared to the Samsung's I had previously.

L29 here. Just downloaded and installed March security update along with fixes and such. Mate 20x feels more smoother
Sent from my EVR-L29 using Tapatalk
I have two EVR L29 c636 phones. Both updated to 187 a few weeks ago and then one updated to 192 last week. Why only one got the most recent update is beyond me. When I plug them into my desktop computer HiSuite says they are both running the most recent firmware.

I had checked received early updates option under update settings, just for the info:
I got my device 2 months ago and it is very snappy. I have no interest in having it become irreversibly laggy because of a major update.
I would love to hear if anybody had applied the update yet and if it slows the phone down.
If it does I will not update-- I'd rather have a snappy phone than one with the latest bells and whistles but sluggish!

Then you might have to wait for the comments of few more people & yes i have noticed little bit lag, & also my chrome is lagging for some reason & i am not sure it's because of my 4g internet or my browser, just received update two hours ago

Hehe
Just got the OTA, will install it asap.
I'm in Europe
I have just received the update (12.0.2) today. I'm from Chile, i have the global version, and it's been pretty good my phone. Pretty fast, new features quite good.
'll keep u in touch
Thanks, I will wait!
I've had this happen to me with previous phones. It's hard to resist the impulse to update, but sometimes it's really a big mistake.

Im from Europe, but i install global version over twrp, for me, everything works just fine, without lag for now, and one big plus, camera is way way beter now.
I'm also of course curious if some of the issues with the previous version (BT/Wifi interference, etc) are resolved

Are you saying you installed the downloaded zip file over TWRP? Or did you take the OTA file? I'm wondering because I have TWRP and Magisk installed. I've been notified for the OTA update, but I've also already downloaded the stock ROM.

Don't update. It looks nice, have some cool features, camera is better, but it feels like it is not the same phone anymore. It lags, some animations are perfect, but many are not. Icons animation is ugly for me, text size is also not OK for me, some is bold and some is not...
The best firmware was Android 9, all after that is worse and worse.
Btw I did factory reset after I updated, like I always do after major update...
Thanks!!
So glad I checked with you guys!
I noticed the slight slowdown also between A9 and a10 within MIUI 11 itself.
Still fast, but an ever so slight lag that wasn't there before.
I assume there is no way to revert to MIUI 11 without unlocking the device....
I'll pass!

This whole episode makes a good argument for unlocking and rooting. Even though I have avoided doing that since I had my Nexus phone, it would seem that this is the only way to prevent your phone from becoming obsolete.
The RN8P is not an old phone and its such a shame that Xiaomi would release an update that would degrade the performance so much...and not give regular users the option of reverting....but then again, I have seen this happen on my previous phones too.
My previous phone was an LG G6, a flagship from a few years ago. When new it came installed with A6, and by the last update was A9, which literally made the device unusable.
Manufacturers are in a dilemma, because on one hand power users demand updates for the latest versions, yet inevitably these newer updated versions use more resources and aren't optimized as well for a legacy device.
At the very least the manufacturers should provide an easy method of downgrading.

I really do not know why Xiaomi doesn't offer official method to rollback as Huawei does via PC Suite.
I am about to unlock my bootloader, but I am not sure what to do next, as all of these tutorials are so confusing.
I think I have to root then, and no idea what comes next...
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Yes it is confusing, Xiaomi does not make it easy to root, I suggest you submit your questions for guidance on unlocking in one of the dedicated threads
