[Q] Ugly smudges on screen. Warranty return?

Hi everybody.
I bought my Nexus in December, and some time ago I noticed that screen looks ugly on certain backgrounds, mainly gray ones. So I did a little investigation and it turned out that I was right: picture looks mostly okay on primary colors, but grays shows terrible smudging. I took a photo of it. Do you think it qualifies for a warranty repair? Any of you noticed something like that?
I attach a photo, it's out of focus on purpose, because otherwise there would be a rainbow goo on screen.

The screen doesn't look good at lower light with certain colors that's just how it is..
The smudges look like someone wiped the screen with their thumb.

Screen was cleaned before taking photo. This rainbow effect is more or less visible on any background, but gray is especially bad. Even scrolling webpages is a bit annoying, because starting from top there is a pinkish stripe, then normal, then pinkish again... Yuck.

i have the exact same problem! Gray and white is the worst, and lower backlight is worse. But I realized this is mainly the glass top's fault, while i scroll a page, i can see those sumdges staying in the same spot!, don't know whether a protecting film will help or not.

joshdu1125 so I'm not alone then. I had a protective film on screen until yesterday and removed it because I hoped it was it's fault. Turned out it's not. Contacted Samsung via email, wonder what they will say.

Handtec said that some of the first phones (first batches) have worse displays than newer batches. I already sent my phone to them to be replaced.

try get "screen filter" from market and lower the intensity of color to let says 30%, check that same grey image, how does it look?..

I am starting to think this problem is universal to all Samsung devices.. Zzzz

unfortunatey this is a problem with all samsung devices i suggest getting a kernel with color control such as francos or glados. its a lot better then the color control filter app and runs super smooth , francos kernel also pretty much doubled my battery life.

rey5757 you are right, less brightness = problem more exacerbated. I you have a photo of your screen, let us see it.
amcmearty I'm using Franco's kernel right now, but tried others too, to no avail.

just go to G.Note thread in my last post, at page 65. I don even have to take "out of focus" photo to see it.

This is a problem with the screen at lower brightness levels.. it happens to just about everyone that greys and whites look bad.

I doubt that Everyone is affected by this, some people claims they have perfect screen on the other thread.

The problem with this shadow thingy is that is varies greatly on difference screen.
The "Size", "Darkness", "Area" of shadow are INconsistent. Some screen have shadow on top area of screen, some have it at corners, some have it at lower bottom, some have it all over half or screen. Then some have it but barely visible(maybe this fall in perfect screen category), some have it but extremely obvious..
How is all these random quality screen fly out of Samsung?..

Found a perfect SCREEN which is Balanced at 0% brightness + 20% color intensity(screen filter):

Try this Test, Post your results

Ok, I have just noticed this, not sure what it means. but it's something that can be easily tested by everyone in a few minutes.
While in gentle alarm in nightmode. the screen is all black and the digital clock is shown, I noticed black lines across my screen and really black dots peppered all over the screen, mostly at the top closest to the earphone. I'm thinking they are dead pixels but not sure.
To reproduce it, I downloaded SBMX, a paint app like photoshop. I painted the canvas black, turned off the lights and after my eyes adjusted, I can see the same pattern of black pixels all over the screen. there is one line near the top of the screen that goes right across.
If some people can try this and post your results it would be very appretiated. If they are dead pixels, I will return the phone.

If they were dead pixels you would see them no matter what color the screen was.

My nexus has those spots while displaying black. My Vibrant also have the dots. Its just how amoleds are, I'm not sure about the amoled plus

That is pretty crappy. I'm sure most people could live with it and I probably will but it kinda erks me that this is the best they could do. I mean if it were a few phones in a bunch, but for all of them to be like it don't seem right.

It's how the screen technology is.. we had a lot of threads like this a while ago.
The conclusion was: "When are you ever going to be looking at your phone in pitch black, on a black screen, with the brightness set to 1?"

From what I have read it has something to do with Super Amoled and the glue used.
My Nexus is not near as bad as the Razr I had. Check out the Razr thread on this.
Ocassionally I would notice on my Razr when using the phone at night, without having to "look" for it.
I can honestly say that I have to try hard to see this on the Nexus, and I have never noticed it in general use, even at night. It shouldn't keep you from enjoying your phone!

You can't see it unless you apply pressure. I don't need to press hard; even lightly doing a single finger scroll gesture has it appear. I think I'll be bringing it for an exchange though; I bought my Note 8.0 at BestBuy.

Not sure if you're seeing backlight bleed or some other form of distortion, but take a look at my thread for reports on backlight bleed:

Comparing to my note 2 which is full dark at every brightness level, this is definitely not the same story with my note 8. Acceptable to watch movies as the brightness is reduced when the room is dark. But it is there

So you are going to return your tablet for a "problem" that you can only see when you run a specific app that renders your screen totally black? Does this show up in anything else?

I can see it whenever I am using my tablet at high brightness in the dark with any app. The bleed test app just lets me see it as clearly as possible but it's quite visible when the entire screen is dark colors. It begins to bother me when I'm drawing on Sketchbook with dark backgrounds.

On the lower left side of the phone, it doesn't seem to be completely black. Anyone else notice this problem?

It doesn't show on computer screen...On my phone screen, look likes lights bleed from the left corner. I can see it when it is totally dark in my room.
Edit:
I took these pictures with my DSLR camera and it show the "green" area. It's the white area on my sceen when i view it in the dark.

Yes, unfortunately it's to be expected from AMOLED technology, at least for now. I've swapped several phones in the past and they all were either worse or slightly better than the first. Extremely few say they have perfect screens, and even then they probably haven't taken steps to make it more visible (if the pixels are completely turned off it will indeed be completely black) or they just don't have an eye for it. My own Note 3 also has this issue. Google "mura effect" for more answers.

I remember my Galaxy S4 was like that in a pitch dark room it also had faint vertical lines down it on a grey background #808080

Screen issues

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.

No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.

This logo, not that important, but YouTube shows it really need to turn that off sometime.
