GPS fails in Google Maps - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hi Guys,
I've been enjoying my OP3 for a couple of weeks now.
Only one thing that doesn't seem to function; Navigating w/ Google Maps.
GPS in other apps (Pokemon Go / GoogleNow / Ingress / etc.) works fine.
When i search a location in maps, i see the blue dot for where i am located, which also moves perfectly with where i am (even on highways).
As soon as i press 'go navigate', the app has no clue of where i am, and lacks behind hundreds of meters. Every time i get out of the app, and back into it, it fixes again on the spot where i am, and then stays at that place.
Anyone else got this issue, or perhaps knows how to fix it?
Any help would be highly appreciated!
model: Oneplus 3
original OxygenOS 3.2.1
No root
GPS mode: High-accuracy, w/ BT and Wifi scanning turned on.

You are not the only one. OP is aware of it and they'll fix it in the next update, at least they said so...

GPS problems

Seems like recantly my GPS app and MAP apps were updated (automatically). Since then I have lots of problems.
Main problem drives me nuts, soe perhaps somebody can share the solution.
When I turn on GPS it seems to work fine (although I have the new interface). Then when I'm done I want to shoot it down.
1. There is not EXIT GPS button like it used to be
2. I go to the open Apps list and clode the App, but it is still running
2. When I go to Status bar and disable GPS sensor the App shoots down but part of it runs in a background, keeps comlaining that CPS signal is lost.
The bottom line - in order to completely get rid of GPS app from RAM I have to restart the phone.
Any clues why this is happening or how to go back to the previous version of GPS/MAP software which worked so much better ???
Thanks - Arthur

Yes that's very annoying. I had it go off during a meeting. Now I find myself restarting the phone just like you said just to cut it off completely
Edit: I guess you can go to settings - application manager - maps and then uninstall updates.
I don't even bother with the Google app. I use Waze and love it. Crowd sourced traffic data and pretty decent directions (for the most part) make it my preferred app.

Google Nav crashing with flashing white/black screen

got an issue with the google nav app crashing on me.
a little background first though.
had this issue on the std rom, and tried flashing the current ARHD 31.3 rom in the hope of fixing it, it hasnt!
from a fresh boot, i can go into the google maps app, choose a location and then use the nav app go to there, no issues at all.
next time, i open maps, no issues at all, choose my location, and as soon as i hit start navigation, the nav screen opens, showing the next turn to make at the top, the voice is telling me where to go, but the main map screen, is flashing black and white.
it flashes like that for 5 or 10 seconds before crashing, the only way to restore navigation to a working state is to reboot the phone.
its getting rather annoying now, as i dont use the nav very often, i tend to need it occasionally, and its irritating to have to reboot the phone just to get the nav working.
as far as i am aware, the GPS works fine in everything else, (Maps, strava, gps test) it just seems to be nav thats causing the issue.
i've already tried clearing the cache from settings, apps, clear data, but i still get the same issue
any ideas on what might be causing this
cheers

Had this too on CM, thought it had something to do with the ROM but after reverting to stock exactly the same issue. You're not alone

Any update on this issue? I have exactly same issue on stocked One X with Sense 5.0, Android 4.2.2.
I have exactly the same problem. I'm wondering if it's a Sense or app issue. Either way, I submitted a bug report.

I turned off the hardware overlay in the Developer section, and it seems no problem anymore... Not thoughtfully tested yet, tho...
Still flashing and crashing HTC One X+
Google maps to navigation is still flashing and crashing - even after turning off hardware overlays.
Works 1st time after reboot. If I swipe the app away from recent apps screen, then it starts failing.
3rd time I start it, working again, but I figure it's going to happen again.

Anyone ever get an answer to this? Last post I found was December 2013 and still nothing.

I think I've found a kind of workaround to prevent this problem.
When you search the location you want to reach, and you are faced to the tile with these info:
8 min (3,1 km)
some info about trip
[MAP]
Start navigation
Instead of click on "Start navigation", click on "8 min (3,1 km)", then when the map is open, click on "Departure" and maps should not crash.
I hope the explanation is enough clear, I've translated texts from the italian app so I'm not sure if I've did it in the right way.

I was so annoyed with this...
I have had this problem for the last year using the stock, rooted AT&T Rom for my HTC One X + My wifes phone that is an HTC One X does not seem to do this. I found when I removed the maps update it worked well. When it updated it seemed to work a few times then the flickering and crashing started up again.
I tried the other suggestion above.
Finally I noted that when I clicked on start nav and as soon as it tried to open the map if I hit the power button and waited a second and turned it back on the image was stable. Sometimes I couldn't catch it before it crashed but if I did it would do the trick.
Why doesn't google fix this?
Same here. One X with rooted stock ROM.
When the flickering starts, i turn off the screen and then back on. This works for me in most situations. Still really annoying.

How about you do some research yourself instead of having us do the legwork for you.
There are too many variables with GPS, most likely it's user error or just a lack of signal.
Flash factory images and stop driving while using YouTube. You're a danger to everyone on the road, and it's not to be taken lightly. Someone could die because your negligence.

I use YouTube playlist for audio in my car all the time, literally every day. Yes, fiddling through songs while driving is a danger to him and everyone else, but who said that's what he was doing? Don't be so quick to assume the worst and think he's doing all this while driving, it's not hard to run this setup before leaving the house/work.
Anyways try calibrating your GPS in the Google maps app, and placing your phone somewhere closer to a window (anywhere else really, experiment with location.). For example, I don't get crap for GPS signal when my pixel is sitting near or in my center console, but if I move it to my passenger seat or put it on my magic mount I never loose signal.
Also try purchasing YouTube red or premium or whatever it's called. That way you can play your music, then return to the maps app, maybe keeping maps as a foreground app will help your problem, but who knows.
Man... You guys are harsh. I have gps issues, but different from what I can find online. Also, don't be so quick to blast him about driving with YouTube. Maybe he likes to listen to music from YouTube or maybe he has tesla auto pilot and likes to watch videos in rush hour traffic.
thx noidea and dinkoh... gonna leave this thread... clearly not worth trying to find an answ here based on the unconstructive prior responses (not yalls responses)
No idea if it is what's going on or not, but VZW has a long history of GPS issues on rooted devices, especially ones running custom firmware. As far as I know it has never been fixed, but not sure of that anymore.

I'm going to bump the thread real quick because I started having this issue after tweaking my doze settings.
If you're using the "L speed" app turn all the doze settings under the battery section app off. If you used another app to enable any doze mods or disable doze motion detection then disable them all.

Not in my experience
For what its worth, on my unlocked, rooted, and custom rom'd (purenexus) pixel xl, gps seems to be working just fine. Rather surprising since every previous device had problems. Unless the rom does it by default i haven't done any tweaks to any doze settings so cant rule that out on my end.

GPS issues

So I have noticed when I am going on long trips that my GPS keeps bugging out on google maps. At first I thought it was maps being weird but now I'm starting to think its the GPS in the phone itself. I'll be driving down the highway and it will suddenly start pointing the other direction like i just made a turn. After about a tenth to a quarter of a mile it will correct itself. Over the course of a 200 mile trip it did this every few minutes. Sometimes it would think that I had pulled off the offramp when I was still cruising highway speeds. This and the camera issues are making me seriously consider selling this phone and getting something different...

In Google maps click your location (little blue dot), then in the bottom left hand side click calibrate compass. I was having the exact same issue until I did this.
I have tried doing the calibration and it still wont get better than "low" accuracy. Do you get better than low?
Mines medium right now. I remember when I was having issues it showed low too. I had to get out of my car and do the compass calibration again as for some reason it wouldn't move off of low every time I tried in my car.
Yeah it's terrible. Hoping someone else has some fixes
Same annoying gps issues here as well
Just happened today for the first time. No clouds or building, I was out in the open. Marker flipped 180° 3-4 times while I approached a stoplight... hard to know which way to turn.
Makes me think this might be related to the recent 10.0.6 update?

Yes, that is exactly my lips around a hundred and eighty degrees numerous times. Takes forever for it to get oriented and it still sometimes gets off the kilter. I have noticed this since 10. 0.4

The first time I noticed this issue was November the 8th when I was driving north for 3 hours. It was obviously happening where it would do that marker flipping around. This last sunday i went on another trip and was still noticing the issue often. It even caused me problems when I was walking around downtown Kansas City trying to find a venue. I had to ask somebody to point me in the right direction because the thing couldn't decide where i needed to go. I have reached out to the oneplus support and i'm waiting for further instructions from them. ... here... ill copy paste the email.

No, it will not wipe the phone unless you select that option to wipe data or factory reset.
Well i will tell it to just wipe the cache... i am pretty positive whoever was handling the support just gave me instructions to wipe the whole phone though. lol. im not doing that.
Edit:
Wow... so frustrating... When I tried to do those functions the thing asked for a password. It wasn't my pin or my normal password i use. I have no idea what it was asking for but it gave a forgot password option to reset the phone. I reset the phone.
Also... its that easy to reset this phone?
Ok... Well after resetting my phone completely booted up, installed the latest patches and now when I check the accuracy in the maps it checks out high. Hopefully it stays that way.

So, did you end up losing all your data?
I was never root in the first place. All my data is in the google cloud. I just had to go through the annoyance of setting up all my settings and icons since they didn't stick.
Well I know it's not 7T, but I had horrible GPS on the 6T and 7 Pro models both. Neither had ok accuracy, no matter what I did. It would lose GPS signal on street, in car, on foot. OnePlus is just super horrible at GPS, and I have no clue why. Like why it is not acknowledged and why they won't fix it.
My recommendation is to try a reboot and/or use Google Maps when this happens. I am a fan of Waze, I prefer it much over Maps (speed limits). But in Waze and any other 3rd party GPS app - it struggles to find me way more than Maps. That said, your GPS won't magically fix itself in Maps. It will be just a tiny teeny bit better. So like.. from super horrible bad it will go to christ this is a horrible gps. It may still help in a pinch.

Interesting, thank you, I will try that.
I mean in my testing, I actually put different phones next to each other and tested GPS Signal strength.
The 7 Pro basically has a much worse signal than any other phone I tested. It's dark orange/red. Every other phone is at least yellow.
Just install "GPS Status" from Play Store, put your phone besides whatever other phone and prepare to get shocked.

Hello,
Posting this in case others are still searching for a gps accuracy fix on the Oneplus 7t phone.
I may have found a workaround for the gps accuracy issues on the 7t. Fwiw, I'm using the Verizon version, on a HD1905, with the latest March update 10.0.0.HD65AA. I was experiencing all the same issues, and sadly the March update didn't seem to make any improvement. I've only had the phone for a few days, and was very disappointed w/ the gps performance. Tried everything including wiping the phone clean (I didn't realize the gps was wonky until I spent a couple days migrating everything over), and nothing worked -- it would immediately boot and have wildly wrong gps location, or the lock would seem to phase in an out. If it wasn't for the shelter in place order, I probably would have returned it.
After much trial and error, I found a workaround that seems to work. Even tested on our walk around today with Gaia and it correctly tracked our path.
1) put phone into airplane mode
2) reboot, and leave in airplane mode after reboot
3) run google maps, wait for lock, should be accurate
4) turn off airplane mode
5) test gps -- it should work better
If you reboot while normal networking is enabled, the gps would fail every time -- never accurate. But when networking is completely shutdown when the GPS radio is turned on, it seems to work as expected. Using the 'GPS test' app, my accuracy goes from 100m/ no lock, to approx. 3M 3d-lock, just sitting inside on my desk, and it maintains it. I'd say my old Pixel phone still has slightly better gps accuracy overall, but this is very usable now. And, I don't reboot very often -- phone is always charged, etc, so the workaround is doable for me. If I do need to reboot, just have to remember to use airplane mode first. Otherwise, seems to work as expected now.
Hope that helps someone.

thanks for posting this. Wow. That is a lot of headache to run through. I will try that as well. As I absolutely can't stand the GPS on this phone.
I have also found a workaround, although it involves toggling the location settings on and off. IE toggling the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning on and off. Generally this works for me, although sometimes I have to reboot the phone

Question Poco F3 GPS (drift) Issues

Hi there,
I got the F3 a few weeks ago and I'm happy with it, except the GPS on outside. I asked a week ago on reddit if somebody has similar problems.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/nbbr05
I wrote there:
"So the basic issue is: at home I'm staing at one place, without any drift. But If I'm walking around, my GPS does not walk smoothly like I do. I'm walking forward the street, the GPS follows me (sometimes) but often randomly jumps back and stays there for several minutes. If I open Google Maps I stay also on the wrong place. So it's not a App-Specific Problem, more a Hardware/Miui Problem?"

I also took a video in comparison to an Iphone X. I use there Pokemon Go to see my position. The position on the Iphone X is always very accurate.
In my Settings I enabled WIFI and Bluetooth search as well as the google improvements. I disabled all of them, but no real difference.
Has somebody any idea how can I solve this? Is my phone a real lemon?
If you have "Google Location Accuracy" on when you're connected to a wi-fi, your location accuracy is greatly increased. I guess that's why you're fine at home. Ppl turn it off to drift when under a roof. It is supposed to work with mobile networks as well but I've personally never noticed a difference.
As for the non-assisted/outside accuracy, here are the GPS types I found in GSM arena. F3 has dual-band A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO, QZSS, NavIC. iPhone X has A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, QZSS. I have limited knowledge to comment any further without speculating, maybe you or someone else can use that info.
I have the same issue with xiaomi.eu rom in version 12.5.7.0, 13.0.2.0 and 13.0.3.0
very disappointing!
Enable "Force full GNSS measurements" in developer settings, it's known to solve some issues with GPS.

Yes, it is solved by turning "Google Location Accuracy" to OFF!!
Now i get the price tag of this phone, you buy it, and spend all your time with it searching the forums and fixing it, because prior to this device, i had other brands like Samsung, Huawei, apple, where things like this worked like a charm, an we are accustomed to expect the same thing with the price tag of 300€, unfortunately it doesn't work that way.. i had Huawei mate 30 pro before Poco f3, i mean it is night and day.. if i set the time widget on home screen, the clock from status bar disappears, i mean come on. I can't change the date order on the lock screen, phone app is just awful, every time I had to search for something i had to exit the phone app and go to the contacts app.. swiping from the home screen for the status bar is really hit or miss.. i don't like miui at all, i thought i wouldn't mind it but it was a mistake.. I'm considering flashing AOSP but that to the side is a mess, with the firmwares, partitions, recovery.. I'm regretting for buying this phone.
