Non-intuitive thread reply buttons. - About xda-developers.com

Every now & then, a device's development thread is faced with someone (usually with a low post count) quoting the entire 1st post, this takes up needless screen space, as normally, the actual content of the quoter, while having relevance to the thread, has no bearing on the content being quoted. It also can result in the associated forum's moderators being called on to edit that particular post to edit the quoted content out (or add hide tags).
At most of the other forums that I visit, each post within.every thread (permissions permitting) can be found:
Reply button takes you to the advanced post editor, without any other post placed in the edit box. (Within or without quote tags).
'Quote' button which takes you to the advanced post editor, with the related post being quoted, in quote tags.
Multi-Quote button which places the selected post within quote tags into the clipboard, to be inserted once the 'Reply' or 'Quote' button is used.
Also, at the bottom of every page in a thread, if it has a Quick Reply box, it doesn't require activation by clicking on a button at the bottom of a post.
Based on this, I find it easy to see why many users inexperienced with the way that XDA forums operate, end up needlessly quoting the 1st post, or any posts within the thread of concern.
Is there a specific reason for the way that the reply buttons work on XDA? Or could the adjustment of their configuration & actions be considered in order to minimize the amount of post/ thread maintenance that your moderators are being called to do?

[Request] allow original poster to close his own thread and delete double posts...NOW

Please allow posters to close their own threads and delete double posts. It's ridiculous not to have this feature!!!
What is so harmful about us closing our own threads?
I think it is beneficial, for example:
1) OP feels harassed: closes thread
2) OP learns that there was already another, more prominent thread of the same issue: closes thread
3) OP wants too closes his upcoming software update but doesn't want to read other's post issues that he has fixed on the next version.
etc...
Why can't we close our own threads? Delete our own posts?
For ***sakes look at these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4120834#post4120834
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535393&highlight=deleted
If you aren't going to implement this then atleast tell us why in the world we can't delete our posts!
Here is my previous thread posted at the wrong forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535157
After reading Mike´s post it is clear that the best and easyest way is to click on the red button asking an experienced Mod to do the action, otherwise it can be a democratic chaos...
Just my opinion.
mikechannon said:
It sounds obvious that you should be able to delete your own posts. However, it can cause chaos! Once you create a thread you do not own it, particularly if other users have contributed posts to the thread.

I agree, Just because you posted a thread, doesn't mean it's your thread. This is a community with no personal ownership of posts or threads.
mikechannon said:
Deleting the first post in a thread deletes the whole thread. This could be a long running thread with many posts and pages. To allow this thread to suddenly vanish because the OP deletes the first post can upset many contributing users.

However, it's relatively easy to have the odd post removed by clicking on the report post (red triangle) that appears on all posts. All you need do is say something like "please delete my double post" or "delete my post it's in the wrong forum" etc etc

Once again I reinforce Mike's statement. The Mods are here to assist you, please make use of our services.
mikechannon said:
There are also a couple of other fiddly reasons why it's best for a Mod to delete posts - one is that a Mod can also move the post to Trash. You may not know that deleted posts are still visible to Mods and leaving them kicking around forums makes things look very messy to Mods even if other users see a nice tidy board. Another reason not to allow user delete is that a very few users could use this to cover up "provocative posting" or just to cause trouble with other members. (You can imagine for example, that a ROM thread suddenly disappearing because the cook is bored with it could lead to lots of frustration amongst users and extra work for Admin and Mods.)
Just use the report icon or contact a Mod - quick and easy

Just basically report to mods is the summation here.
Got a question about deleting a post:
Once a post is deleted, then all posts after it in the same thread will be changed a post#. E.g, if post#2 is deleted, then post#3 became #2, #4 become #3 etc. But if the original post#3 is cross-linked to another thread using the 'view single post' function. In such a case, will the cross-link url address be updated accordingly?
The link will be to the deleted post, no re-shuffle will occur.
The URL is showpost.php and p=4153097 ("p" is the post number, not the thread number, that will be "t").
Here is one I deleted from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=6
As a moderator, I can see deleted posts. Try that URL above
Dave
In the above case, seems you deleted the whole thread.This is the url you pointed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=6,
And I can not access these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=7
My question is for example in this thread we are talking in,
if you deleted this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4121794&postcount=3.
But I already crosslinked this post (next one to the deleted) with this url: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4132664&postcount=4.
So my above url will become this post, is that right?
BTW, sometimes I can see the contents of deleted post from a google search result.
Edit: Ok, seems I got it, you said no re-shuffle. That means if #3 deleted, , #5 is still #5, so there is no influance on crosslink address of posts. Thanks.

[REQ]Possible solution to the recent problems

This is a quote from another post i made in another thread. The reason i decided to make this into a thread is because i honestly dont think a lot of people read a very old thread for requests. Please reply with a real opinion.

The admins say this is our forum,why not give us some control? Not mod permissions or admin permissions but our own 'personal' permissions. There's a vb mod called the "Comprehensive Ignore System" it can do these things for users :
users can ignore entire threads. These threads will then not show up in searches, forumdisplay, and "new posts".
if a user puts someone on their ignored list, they stay ignored, meaning their threads will not show up in forum displays, searches, or "new posts".
Users can ignore threads with certain tags.
Users can select to ignore an entire forum, so that they no longer see it, nor do search results that are located in those forums show to the user.
Complete user group control for each of these features.
Admin can also clear a users ignores when editing a user.
Users can review and remove ignores from their UserCP.
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
This can give us power over our forum without giving us the power to control others, but control what we see.
Link: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=181626
There's also an addon to the above mod called "Users on ignore list cannot reply to thread" and it can do this:
If a user is on the thread starters ignore list, that user cannot reply to the thread, or quickreply. This of course is bypassed by moderators and admins.
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
This will allow developers to ignore other people they see as incompetent and not helpful to the cause in the thread but those uses on the list can still view it.

[HOW TO] Make The Most Of The XDA App

I'm writing this guide to the XDA app because there are a few guides already but they only cover use of the desktop site.
This is for all of you who use the app instead, but may not know how to do certain things.
I will keep this as simple as possible so it's easy for anyone to follow what's being said.
If anyone has a suggestion as to what I should add, or if I should remove or include anything, please let me know by either posting in here of sending me a PM.
To start with, for those who haven't got the xda application, the free version can be found here. But I'd suggest buying XDA Premium because it's ad-free, has a few features which the free version doesn't and it's donating money to this wonderful site
Right, now you've got the app it's time to show you around.
Across the top of the app you will see different tabs for you to choose from.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I'll tell you what each of these tabs contains and what you can do.
Latest
As you can see above, you can click on either Unread, All and Participated.
*Unread - This allows you to view the last 1000 threads from across the site except for those where you're the latest person to comment.
*All - This is similar to Unread but shows the 1000 latest threads, whether you've been the last to post or not.
*Participated - This allows you to view all of the threads that you've posted in.
Forums
This is where you'll find all of the different forums across XDA. This includes a ton of device specific forums, a general discussion forum, and forums dedicated to the development and hacking of different OS's.
Favorites
As you can see, we have 2 options here.
*Forums - You can subscribe to a whole forum here, just as I have for my devices. This is a good idea if you're helping out in your devices forum quite often.
*Topics - At some point on xda, you'll probably find yourself subscribing to a thread so you can easily keep up with it. This is where all subscribed threads are placed.
I'll explain how to subscribe to a thread/forum later on.
PM
If you want to check your PMs or which PMs you've sent, you need look no further.
You'll easily be able to notice if you have received a new PM because the top message to show will be highlighted (see pic above)
More
This tab gives you the following options :
*Profile - View your own profile to see how many posts/thanks you've had and your general information.
*Who's Online - Simply shows you every user who is currently on.
*Search - Searching is one of the biggest things for you to do if you want to find out information. To make searching easier, only search for keywords rather than the whole question.
*News - This is great for viewing stories on the Portal, without being on the Portal. It shows the most recent portal posts, just as the desktop site does.
*Settings - You can change theme, font size, in-app signature(I'll explain this later), preferences etc.
-*
--*Display Style - This gives you a choice of a few styles and themes for the app.
--*Font Size - Here you can change the font size from small to very large.
--*Default View - You can choose what you want to load up right away when you open the app. Choose from Latest, Forums, Favorites or PM.
--*Notification - Here you can choose which push notifications come through to your device, how often to check for notifications as well as select a ringtone for when they come through.
--*Prefix Display - You can change the options to either No Prefix, Only in Topic View, Only in Thread View or Both Topic and Thread.
--*Use 24-hour format - Tick the box to have 24 hour time displayed or un-tick the box to display AM/PM.
--*Posts per Page - Change how many posts you wish to view on a single page. Choices range from 10 to 50.
--*Loading Behaviour - You can change how it loads up a thread. It will either Show Oldest Post, Jump to First Unread post or you can Jump to the Newest Post.
--*Tapatalk Signature - You can choose to have no in-app signature, Sent from [enter device name] using xda, Sent from [enter device name] or you can set your own.
--*Customize - Customize your in-app signature to whatever you'd like (as long as it's in accordance with the Forum Rules).
*NOTE* Your in-app signature is different to your site-wide signature and will also show as being part of your post. So please be sure to separate your post from this signature
--*Enable BBCode - Tick to enable BBCode. If you're not sure what BBCode is, or want a full list then click here.
--*Enable Smilies - Tick/un-tick to enable/disable the use of smilies.
--*Show Avatar - Tick to show people's avatars. Un-tick so no-one's avatar is shown.
--*Display English - Choose whether to display all writing in English or not. The default language will be whichever language your device is set to.
--*Save files to - Choose where to save all files which you download using the app.
--*Search History - You can clear the history of all searches you've made whilst using the app.
*Logout - Lets you logout of xda but can still view the forums.
*Exit - Exits you from the app right away.
Stickies - If you wish to view the stickied threads of whichever forum you're in (and I suggest you do), then you need to click the Stickies tab inside a sub-forum. (See pic below)
There you will see the threads which have been placed there because they contain important and useful information which will help you out.
Creating A Thread - Before I explain how to create a thread, please follow my suggestion to read the stickied threads first. Also, please read this great guide by saywhatt - [HOW TO] make a good THREAD, POST, QUESTION and POLL and that will explain exactly what to add to your threads to make it the best it can be!
Now it's time for you to learn how to create a thread for yourself
Once you know for sure you're in the correct forum, you're ready to start.
*When you're in the list of threads in that forum, what you need to do is to press the menu button on your device. Doing so will bring up the following options -
*Simply click on the New Topic option and you'll then be brought to the following screen :-
*In the Subject box is where you need to put the title of your thread. Please be sure to follow the guide mentioned above so you can make the most suitable title possible.
*In the box below the Subject box is where you type your post. This will be the first post of your thread so, following the advice is the guide previously mentioned, make sure to include all relevant information, any questions which you need to add and explain it all as well as you can and make sure it can be understood by other people.
*Once you've made sure your thread is ready to be posted, click Submit and you'll be taken back to the list of threads and you'll see the new thread at the top of the list.
Thanks Button - The thanks button is there so we can click that, rather than posting "Thanks" whenever someone helps us out.
To locate the Thanks button, click on a comment and the following menu will show up :-
Simply click on the Thanks button and voila!
The screenshot above had some other useful stuff in aswell.
*Reply - Click this to simply post in the thread.
*Quote - If you want to reply to a specific post, click Quote and it will show their message on with your own. The other person then knows exactly who you're speaking to.
*Multi - The same as Quote but can be used if you want to reply to numerous people in a single post.
*Share - This is so you can share the post/thread to your favorite social network sites, through a text message or even share it across Bluetooth.
*More - This option has a few more options to give you. By clicking More, you can send the user a message or view their profile, you can copy the info of the whole post or just a link to that post and you can also open the post in your web browser.
Sending a PM - At some point on this site you may feel the need to send someone a PM but don't know how to.
Follow these steps and you'll be sending messages in no time.
The first way of doing this is to go to the PM tab, start a new PM and type in the persons username (as shown below)
If you want to send the same PM to multiple users, then after each username but a ";".
Another method is to click on the users display picture and it'll take you to their profile.
Then click on -
Reporting - Unfortunately, we can no longer report a users posts via the app. What we must do instead, is click on the users comment, click on More and then click on Open In Web Browser. From there, follow the guide Getting A Moderators Help.
Posting pictures - If at any point you wish to upload a photo into a thread, click on the camera icon when you're in the comment box and you'll get an option to upload from either Gallery or take a pic straight from your Camera.
As you can see from the pic above, you'll then get the options 'Tapatalk Hosted' which means you can actually have the picture mixed in with your writing (how I have in this thread). Or if you choose 'This Forum' it will pin the picture to the bottom of your post as an attachment.
Using an Image Host - Sometimes while trying to upload a picture on XDA, you will discover that the picture you've just uploaded (using the method above) shows up as an error and will just keep loading. This will be because there's an error in the system somewhere.
Instead of it putting you off uploading a picture, you can always use an Image Host app such as Imgur. What this app allows you to do is to upload the picture to that app and then Imgur will be able to host the file instead. It can then be displayed on xda by using certain BBCode.
Subscribing to Forums & Topics - If you're constantly looking through a specific forum or you're in a particular topic quite a lot of the time, you'll probably want to subscribe to the forum/topic so you've got easier access to view it.
This will explain how to do just that.
Let's say, for example, that you'd like to subscribe to the entire 'About xda-developers.com' forum. All you have to do is navigate to that forum and simply long press on the forum itself.
You'll then see the following pop-up.
As you can see, you're presented with 3 options.
*You can Create a Shortcut so you can have instant access to the forum directly from your homescreen.
*You can Mark the Forum as Read, so it will be as if you have read every single topic in that forum.
*And you can Subscribe to the forum. If you choose this option you are brought to the following screen where you can choose how often you'd like to be notified of changes via email.
Subscribing to a certain topic is exactly the same.
Simply long press on a topic to be given the option to Subscribe or Share.
To unsubscribe from a topic or forum, simply long press again and you'll get a pop-up with the options to Unsubscribe and Change Notification Type aswell as the previous options to Mark as Read and Create Shortcut.

Why are you advertising paid apps
This goes into the paid apps section
Oh yeah don't use tapatalk
This happens :

Lol I'm kidding
And don't for get to mention xda premium hd
This doesn't go in the Paid Apps section because it's a guide for the XDA app. So this is the best section for it.

Nice guide! Wish this was there when I joined XDA because I only use the app.

You should mention that there is a limit on the amount of pics you can post with the app,I think it's the same as tapatalk. 30 hosted pics unless you pay the premium for unlimited pics and I don't think you can post pics from the free app
sent from the thing I stab with my finger when I get two minutes

Can anybody else confirm this?

If you subscribe to threads/forums on the desktop version, then they'll show up across any of your devices. They won't automatically sync just by favoriting them on the app though.

I was just able to upload a pic from the free version.
I just had to make sure to upload to forum instead, so it just puts it as an attachment.
It's a problem on Tapatalk's side that stops a normal upload working.
P.S. I've added some things into the guide and added a thread changelog to post #3 so you can all easily see what I've changed and when
Remember to let me know if I've missed anything out.

Little tip re pics. If its a new post, you can upload it, if you try to upload when editing, it won't work.
Thanks. This seems very useful.
thanks for the write up & everyone please donate!

Previous Thread/Next Thread buttons broken

Hopefully this is the right way to report this problem with the forums.
I'm used to navigating the site by reading a thread, clicking on the "View First Unread" button to see new posts, then using the "Previous Thread" link at the bottom to read the next older post.
For the last couple of weeks, clicking on "Previous Thread" changes the title displayed to the proper target, but what you get displayed for thread content is the beginning of the thread you just read. This means that the only way to read a forum is to keep going back to the table of contents for that forum and click a thread with new posts. This gets to be a major pain once you're off the first page of threads.
"Next Thread" is equally broken.
I can't see any value to this behavior. It would be nice to have it working as it used to.
Thanks.

You are right - this is the place to report. I don't think anything has changed with this functionality but I have definitely recreated this error. We'll take a look and figure out a fix.
Found and fixed this bug, will take a few minutes to show up on all the servers.
Thanks again for reporting it!

[CLOSED] Welcome to XDA 2021!

KNOWN ISSUES as of 12/3 (we're working on these!):
Some threads/posts may be missing. We imported missing threads, some first posts missing still.
Need to launch new XDA app asap. All current apps are broken like Tapatalk and XDA app. Use the browser instead for now plz (update: 12/7-8/20 target launch)
In-thread search not working (update: 12/4/20 should be fixed)
More stuff (we're reading every post!)
======================
For login issues... use the "Forgot password" to reset your password. If you do not know your email address or it is no longer active, we will work on a way of getting access restored.
If Google login does not work, you can reset your password and reassociate (called "Connect Account") your Google account to allow login.
======================
We're excited to welcome you to the new version of the XDA Forums, which is now based on XenForo software instead of vBulletin. If you're not familiar, XenForo is a modern forum platform with a focus on speed, sharing, and overall fluidity. TLDR: we long ago outgrew vBulletin and we wanted to make a huge upgrade.
Things are different! We know it will take some time for everyone to adjust to the new forums, and we ask for your patience as we work out bugs and issues to make the XDA 2021 forums as familiar as possible. One fun thing to try: change templates in the bottom left corner. We have a few to choose from and might add more. Whether you like a dark or light look, or if you want to see classic XDA colors from a decade ago , we have you covered.
Use this thread to report bugs or ask questions. Our partner firm, Audentio, which designed the forums, might respond on our behalf within this thread.
Thank you for your continued support of XDA, and we hope you enjoy XDA 2021! ✌
Updated lists moved to XDA XenForo 2.2 Upgrade thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/xenforo-2-2-upgrade-post-bugs-issues-and-comments-here.4245677
Known Bugs/Regressions:
Some posts (former DevDB OPs, at least) can't be edited unless user disables the WYSIWYG editor and uses BBCODE instead. Fixed 12/09 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-115#post-84076621
All users have enforced signature length and link limits, which should be higher/removed, at least for advanced forum users. Fixed 12/20 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-135#post-84140273 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-135#post-84141915
Advanced forum user max title length is too short, truncating them (e.g. "Senior Recognized Developer / Recognized Contribut").
Long forum names are truncated (e.g. "Android Software and Hacking General [Developers O").
Thanks/Likes counts are reduced for most users, sometimes dramatically, seemingly from Aug 29 - Dec 2; possibly related to (7).
Various old forum emojis aren't mapped to new unicode ones, and ones in old posts that do exist (e.g. :cowboy:) don't display.
Some users have reported their OPs and/or attachments reverting to older versions; possibly related to (1). Fixed 12/09 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-115#post-84076621
Broken redirects from old links for many threads/posts.
Disabling Alert in Preferences forces Mobile App Push enabled, one should be able to disable both.
Users who were Senior Members are now only Members, as though the threshold is different. Fixed 12/09 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-115#post-84076615
"Unfurl"ed URL links to posts sometimes show a preview of the OP instead of the correct post (e.g. [URL unfurl="true"]https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/post-84073623[/URL]

What's your favorite theme? Mine is kind of Classic!
Site is very slow.
What is the equivalent of usercp now?
So SLOW it is unusable. Worthless. Seriously, worthless.

I know you guys are probably still working out the bugs, but so far the forum is super slow. It take 20 to 30 seconds to load a page. And yes, my Internet works fine with all other sites at the same time so I know it's not my computer, browser or Internet connection.
Also, for some reason, I can't load page 2 of threads and it seems like some recent posts were not migrated over?
Question. What's this mean for the XDA Android app? Not able to login at the moment. Plans for updating it I take it?
Where is the Search Thread box? I used it all the time! Edit: When using the top of page Search box here is a drop-down menu option to search this thread but it's no working. Edit 2: It has been fixed!
How can you add a title to a post since Advanced is gone?
No option to not include your signature in some posts & in others not like in Advanced before the migration?
Most Thanked posts in the thread (liked) in the right sidebar is gone?

Hopefully the site is still settling in after the migration. I know this can take time. Looking forward to continue here on the new platform and hope all the great experiences of old times remain the same and new ones are added.
I would second the earlier comment about the site being slow but again i probably answered my own question in the first sentence i typed.
it's slow, but the cost of change need some time, imagine you are merge years to a new platform..
it's not easy for sure, and can't be done in one day.
I assume that everyone can already tell but it really is very slow. I hope that it can be fixed!
This is dreadfully slow, 20-30+ seconds to load a single page.
Trying to go to the *last* page of a thread causes it to continuously go to the first page of the thread, and "jump to new" is even more broken, listing "recent" posts but labeling each one as "#1" and then mixing in "first page" posts as well.
Evident for me on this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...oid-auto-use-torque-with-androidauto.3657805/
Update: while we're back online, we know the forums are slow. We're actively working to fix some database issues that are causing the slowness. Thanks for your patience.
The site looks great! Thank you for all your hard work on this! I am sure you will get all the bugs worked out soon
Small bug: It seems I can no longer moderate my XDA Community App forum. Is this on the list of things to fix?

You should try the UI before asking, on top right of OP you will see few dots, click that to expand menu and tap edit thread and then you will be able to edit the title. I am finding my way around too.
Oops! We ran into some problems.
I can't log in to xda's Android app, which prompts me for the wrong password, but I can log in to the web, although it's very slow.
