Here is the app directly from a Fire TV player. It doesn't really work on phones though because of the display. You can navigate it, but it's not easy..

Any way to change the dpi settings per app?
I beleive there is an app setting for that it requires root -exposed framework module ...take a look here.... (copy and paste in your browser)
repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.mods.appsettings
but why you want to do all this if you can access easly from browser?????
Let me know what you figure out. It's easier to just use a browser as was mentioned or the library app since you can download any of the broadcasting videos there.

Hey guys,
I feel like there is an answer to this question, but, I promise I did search (followed the cardinal rule for forum posting)! Is it possible to hack/mod the amazon fire tv to stream content from your desktop to your TV over the network? This is the only feature I feel is missing and would be awesome if this little beat could do so.
Thanks for any help guys.

I'm not sure but there probably is a casting apk that will work somewhere. Check AllShare, AllCast, etc. for a casting app/receiver that includes desktop capability. You will have to install it with ADB on the Fire TV.
Why would you want to do this? IMO, there are plenty of easier ways to do this. for personal videos, upload to youtube, just set your channel as private. For website based streaming, you could load Firefox browser apk. For movies and TV shows, use xbmc.
Maybe with a little more info on what you want to stream, will help find an answer.

Use plex man.
Go to plex.tv on your PC. Download the plex media server for your PC. On your firetv, download the plex apk. It can also be sideloaded if you already purchased it somewhere else. That's all you need.
I use plex to stream pictures and home videos without a problem.

Worked perfectly! Thanks man! I do have one more question for you though as you seem pretty active on these forums. What would be the point to mod your fire TV? As in what do people gain from doing so, free games?
..
JJ-KwiK said:
You can already sideload any apk without the need to root the device. Although, this isn't the site to talk about that. Root also isn't available as of yet for this device.
I'm looking forward to root for a few reasons.
- Ability to use apps that require root. Ex. an app that can power off your device, so it's not always in standby.
- Ability to change the launcher without the need for Llama.
- Ability to install apps that are currently confirmed as not incompatible.
- Overclock it, to make it run faster.
- Remove Preinstalled Crapware, that can't be uninstalled otherwise.

I don't think that was the right answer
Why do u need some unknown third party software to just play videos from PC?
Plex?
What da?
Turn on Windowx file sharing on PC.
Connect from any Android using Dice Player or File Manager HD+MX Player.

Plex is far from unknown, and makes playing videos, movies, music, and photos from your PC stupid easy. That's why.
Hey guys-
As good as the google play store integration was to the aftv, I have an issue with the resolution of these apps- specifically, hbogo and the mx player app. Although it is offered, the movies and shows I watch from it are quite worse than the resolution of the shows natively installed in the aftv, such as netflix. Same issue for the case of mx player. As a result, I find that I tend to not really use either of them.
The reason why I want to use hbogo instead of the hbo shows offered in the amazon aftv is because I have a subscription to hbogo, and it offers shows and movies that the amazon hbo shows don't offer.
I presume this problem is unsolvable, since the sole reason why we can run the google apps is because it is using market helper to spoof the aftv to act as a nexus 7, a smaller tablet. This part is also curious though, since the nexus 7 that it is spoofing is known to support 720p resoution.
Is my settings wrong, or is this a known issue that users are coping with?
I am aware that aftv is in constant development with new apps and features, so I will definitely be patient. I just wanted to make sure.
Appreciate the help in advance!!

bump.. i think this problem will extend not only to hbogo but to all other of the apps involving google play+ market helper.

How did you install the HBO go app?
I side loaded it onto mine without play store access. the app starts up fine but I don't have a keyboard yet so I can't get further to see what the video resolution looks like. I'm not sure the play store spoof would affect it.... maybe there is some sort of config file that needs to be modified

thanks for the reply. I thought hbogo can only be installed through google play? if i can just sideload it, maybe that can provide better resolution.. where can i find the actual apk for the fire tv?
thanks in advance!
Do you have an android phone or tablet with root access? If you install the hbogo app on it you should be able to pull the apk off the file system

I was able to use the side loaded app last night
I agree the resolution doesn't look perfect but I can't figure out why. It wasnt horrible but on a large screen I could see what you are saying
I suppose it could be hard coded into the app but I don't know how to tell what the native output resolution is

thanks for the reply. Upon looking things up in the past xda forums, it seems the hbogo apk of the kindle fire version is hd. Unfortunately, I do not have any android phones or tablets.
If somebody can help me locate the HD kindle fire version of the hbogo apk, I can try sideloading it.
thanks in advance!

Would love to see the Kindle Fire apk of HBO Go as well. For the time being, I can use the Xfinity app to stream HBO content at full resolution, though it's less than ideal. The HBO Go app quality is crap.
I have a generic Android TV box but I like how the FireTV video apps are optimized for use with a remote control instead of touch.
Is it possible to install FireTV APK to standard Android device?
If so, how do we pull the APK off the FireTV?

Then, we can install any apps from that.

I installed an app(MBC video app) on a couple of Android devices successfully after installing Amazon app store but got mixed results. The app is designed to work with the remote and not a touchscreen. Also the app in this case had issues with displaying ads via adFire. So your mileage might vary...

Hello all,
I downloaded the Netflix app from the Amazon app store and from Google Play Store but the FirePhone is still not showing the Cast icon for Netflix. Other apps, like Shuttle+ music player, are actually showing the icon and it works fine.
Thanks

Yes, I did and it works fine. also, it's able to cast the phone screen to the TV.
Netflix casting works with my phone. The only different thing I have done is changed my build.prop to a nexus 5. So maybe the netflix app sees it as that and allows it to be casted?

How do I change the build.prop? what are the benefits of changing it?
I am not really sure the benefits except that apps will see your device as a nexus 5 instead of fire phone, which may give different features.
To change the build.prop:
You have to be rooted and use a file explorer app such as ES file explorer.
Navigate to the system folder and find the build.prop file.
Make a backup of your original build.prop just in case.
Change the build.prop values listed below.
ro.product.model=Nexus 5
ro.product.brand=google
ro.product.manufacturer=LGE
And then reboot.

Not with this phone, but I found that toggling wifi on and off sometimes got a phone to start showing the Chromecast icon in some apps.
I casted netflix to the chromecast. No extra Nexus files on mine. I did find that Amazon's Instant Videa casted as well, but when their "second screen"... "feature". automatically popped up, the video feed was blacked out. Audo kept playing. I cannot yet find a way to limit the second screen info, but I did little digging, and did not dive into what settings the chromecast might have, if any.
Awesome! Your tip just resolved my Endomondo issue which did not allow me to run the Google Play version on the Fire phone. Now I can finally use my hear rate monitor/pebble. I'll need to wait until I get home to see if the Netflix casting is resolved. Cheers!

Hi,
I purchased a Philips 50PUS7303/12 a few days ago and although very happy with the screen quality I was very disappointed to find that the TV doesn't have the full Play Store or the ability to sideload apps and this was the main reason for going for this Android TV as it just fitted within my budget. Can anyone offer a way to get around this limitation (Philips are shooting themselves in the foot by making it this restrictive). I wanted to install ITV Hub, All 4 and My5, along with TV Catchup as freeview is bad in my area.
Another issue I have still related to the TV, is how to get proper 'Freesat' with EPG. Most of the channels have no name and they are in no proper order. Is there any way to address this.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
Regards,
Robert.
I also plan on purchasing this TV (i.e the 65") and was interested in installing apks. From what I've read on reviews on Amazon UK, you should be able to do this by enabling "unknown sources" from the Google security settings, put any .apk files that you have on a USB and use a file explorer (e.g ES File explorer) to find the USB directory and install the .apk files from there. Should be a piece of cake.
Let me know it this works as this is one of the main reasons why I am interested in buying this smart TV.
Hi jpapadami,
I tried doing that and was able to install ITV Hub, All 4 and My5, but of these apps would show on screen. Going to setting and apps I was able to see each application but was unable to open any of them. ES file explorer installed OK and I was also able to install Modbro.
Regards,
Robert.
Hi, oldish thread but I just got the same TV on a black Friday deal. However its not worth keeping the tv if I cant get itvhub and other UK catch-up apps to work.
I can side load the apps made for non TV devices, but i really want the TV versions as they work better with the remote.
Closest I can find is an xda thread from 2016 where someone pulled the apps from a fire TV device then removed the Amazon requirements from them so they would work on any Android TV device, unfortunately those apks don't work anymore. But I think that looks like the best way?
I've also had a poke around on my Sony android TV, which has all the catch-up apps linked to youview, but I can't find any apks to pull and even if I could i suspect they will be locked to Sony
You can always use aptiode for the apps and use tv app repo to link them / create shortcuts on the main menu.

Hi...
the Thread is a bit older but thats not important. To install any other Apps that are not to find in Android-Tv Play-Store is that simple as to dig in your nose xD
first go to Play-Store and install a file explorer like x-plore to your Tv.
Now you can download any App---apk with you Computer and put it on a USB-Stick or USB-HDD/SSD. Transfer the portable device with your own Hands from PC to Tv Connect the portable Device to USB on the Tv and open the file-explorer. OpenRoot of the portable Device where the apk from the App is in. Choose the apk file and install it to Tv. If you now have a custom Launcher on Tv like sideload-Launcher or ATV-Launcher. Lte your installed Apps shown in this Launcher cause in the stock-Launcher not all Apps would be listet and showing.
Thats all...that easy right.
