I am rather close to buying the HTC One M9 on Verizon, and most of my questions have been answered by research:
Can I unlock the boot loader? If I am S-off
Can I root the phone? If I am S-off
Can I S-off? Sunshine
So with the really hard stuff out of the way, I have an interesting question: Is anyone using Unlimited Data without a tethering package on one of these phones? I do have a copy of FoxFi, but I always get such terrible NAT issues with FoxFi. My current solution is a Samsung Galaxy S3 with Xposed framework and X-tether, but I doubt that setup would work on this phone. Does anyone here have a solid wifi tethering setup like this with the HTC One M9 and Unlimited data (I'd imagine carrier wouldn't matter? Not sure)?
These phones are currently floating for around $200 in decent condition, so I'd rather nab one of these then an a decent M8 $150 (that had no issues doing Unlimited tether out of box on Cyanogen when I installed it a year ago on my dad's phone and my sim card). Should I expect the same with the M9 and Cyanogen or another rom?

Sorry for double post.
With root, unlimited tethering can be enabled very easily on stock ROM, or custom ones usually already have this enabled.
As for CyanogenMOD (some more info) - I think it's coming along but I don't use it so I'm not 100% up to date, but I do recall running it before switching to HTC 10 and it was fully working except double tap 2 wake device which wasn't too big deal for me.
With Android N around the corner and sunshine just cracking s-off for Verizon who knows if s-off will still be possible once unknowilling users who don't root update and then sell device. However this isn't going to be a problem for you as you are wanting to purchase soon, and Android N is a bit away.
$200 is real good price. I'd pay $240-260 for a mint w all the accessories, box, charger, cord, headphones, etc.
Best of luck!

I'm new to CDMA/EVDO carriers, so I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions with regarding to the technology, Verizon and Droid Incredible itself.
A little bit of a background here. I'm using Nexus One on T-Mobile. Coverage in Chicago has been o.k., but Nexus One itself has reception problem which Google seems to have stopped working on it. I'm planning to get a Mifi from Verizon soon as I need internet connection when I start to travel more.
But I have other idea, getting Droid Incredible, and drop T-Mobile. Tether it with my laptop while I'm on the go.
1:Would it be possible to use data & voice at the same time?
2:I'm planning to get PdaNet or some other app to tether it with my laptop. Should I worry about extra charge from Verizon?
3:What's the difference between corporate (44.99) and smartphone (29.99) data plan? I just need to reach IMAPS,HTTP,HTTPS, and PPTP(GRE) servers. Does Verizon block these on $29.99 plan? (Verizon sales are clueless. They just said $44.99 for business "like big business", and $29.99 is for personal use.
4:Rooting this phone. I assume that it's just the matter of time before it's released. But will there be any problem with Verizon?
5:Given Verizon history about being anal about controlling their phones. Did they block features on previous android handsets in the past? (i.e. no file xfer via BT, pics can only be sent via MMS, etc. etc.)
TIA for your answers. Given Verizon reputation of nickel & dime customers, I'm a little hesitated to switch to Verizon. But for now, it seems to make economical sense to do so, so I just wanted to make sure I understand what I'm signing up for.
1. should be able to afaik
2. you shouldnt need another app for that, youll pay extra through verizon to do it, or root the phone and you can do it without any extra charges
3. id go with the consumer pricing unless you find it isnt working for you, no sense on paying extra if it isnt needed
4. shouldnt be any problem with verizon and a rooted phone, ppl have been rooting droids and eris' since theyve been out
5. i doubt it, verizon cant control what happens to a rooted phone
some of your options may not be available until your phone is rooted, but it would definitely be worth the wait on such a sweet phone

Actually you can't use voice and data at the same time on VZW, but how often do you really need to?
1. No
2. PDANet will work fine - or once rooted you might not even need that. It's against Verizon's TOS to tether, but as long as you don't abuse it they won't know.
3. Get the cheaper plan - the more expensive plan is just a way for them to milk corp customers. You can use Exchange/etc with the cheaper plan.
4. You should be able to root it no problem once the devs get on it.
5. I don't think so - that's in Verizon's past for Smartphones. Heck I had a Motorola Q years ago on Verizon and I could do whatever I pleased...even tethering with PDANet...
about high prices
Thats why im staying with my nexous one
my wife is with verizon and we got her phone today and its really nice i cant tell at all a difference between the nexous one and the droid but
there basically the same phones
the nexous one is faster but then again it rooted
but i only pay $80 month for unlimited and she is paying $129 for unlimited
i dont care what i paid for my nexous im off contract and dont have to pay 129 dollars a month
I'll hijack the thread for a little question I have and I don't want to open another thread for it.
Are you able to use the widgets that were introduced with the stock 2.1? For example that News & Weather widget or are they fully replaced / not integrated by HTC in the Sense UI?
If not, are you able to add them with apps or alternative OS versions through rooting?
Thanks for the answers guys.
@Zabil : Quite often (when I travel). This is quite an important issue if I am getting this phone as "phone + data card" combo to save $$$
@sn95chico : I've had some problem with incoming call being diverted to voice mail due to background data (GSM, not WCDMA) recently. Just in case you experience this problem, check this thread out : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6301190
I read somewhere that for CDMA/1x/EVDO, your phone will still ring when data transfer is in progress, it will only be interrupted once you hit the answer button. This is first and only technological edge that CDMA has over GSM network, IMO. I've always been a fan of GSM/WCDMA network. --- (WCDMA network supports concurrent voice/data. Too bad that there's no 100% WCDMA network in US)
Since concurrent data + voice is impossible, it doesn't make much sense for me to switch to this phone yet. I might just get Verizon or Sprint mifi and be done with it.
Alright, well my friend has a Desire Z (Bell version) that works with AT&T 3G. We are in New Jersey, getting about 2.5 DL and 0.9 UL.
I'm assuming this is normal and/or good.
Anyway, he had an iPhone 4 originally, so he got a microSIM adapter and put the microSIM into the Desire Z. I think the speeds are good.
He is wondering about getting the media-net plan. However, he has the grandfathered $30 unlimited so doesn't want to risk losing it.
Currently, with the microSIM in the Desire Z, the image for a phone on att.com is a generic phone that isn't colored. It says "Add your device/is this your device". So it changed from the image of iPhone 4 into a generic one, and is asking me to fill in what kind of phone it is.
I am assuming this is a good sign? I have an AT&T phone lying around somewhere, so I can always put the microSIM into that, get the media-net, and THEN put into the Desire Z. However, will this work based on the info I gave?
---
I am hoping that you tell me in response to the top portion that yes, I can use the media-net plan. If so, all is good.
HOWEVER, is there a way they can figure it out? (I know what happened to the Nexus One users, they got the IMEIs.) Is there a way I can prevent this by flashing a new radio or whatever (rooted Desire Z).
I don't want to change the IMEI obviously.
Thanks, and sorry for long post! Please help!
It should work, but its not a 100% sure thing that AT&T will not be able to figure out you have a smartphone. Basically, if your phone is not AT&T branded, they don't have the IMEI in their database. They don't seem to be able to read what phone my Desire Z is (but I'm on the smartphone data plan, not MediaNet). But its still possible that they can determine you are using a smartphone, or maybe assume so from the amount of data usage.
If they try to put you on a smartphone plan, you can call them and say you have a dumbphone, and see if they can prove otherwise. Worst case, you can slip your SIM back into your old dumbphone and have them remove the data plan or put you back on MediaNet. So its worth at least trying.
I've read at least one Nexus One user, whose phone was being incorrectly read as a Blackberry. Maybe AT&T has now obtained the IMEI numbers for the Nexus One. But also remember that Nexus One is approved for use on AT&T, even if it wasn't sold by them.
Changing your radio doesn't do anthing as far at AT&T being able to read the IMEI. And from what I've read, there is no legal way to change your IMEI (as you may already know).
I have Desire Z with the Media Net plan, but the plan was already on my account when I purchased and device and began using it.
I use anywhere from 500-800mb a month of data and haven't heard anything from AT&T about having to move to a 'smartphone' data plan (I have used a Blackberry Pearl, Bold, HTC Fuze and Nokia E71 under the Media Net plan without hearing from them).
I agree with the above post that its up to them to prove that you're using a smartphone and I'm not sure if they can positively prove that beyond a doubt.
One thing to remember though is that if the Iphone 4 was purchased along with a contract, he is contracted to pay the full data plan for the Iphone until the contract period ends. If he bought it full price or from a 3rd party, then he should be fine.
Thanks for all the replies. gbarayah, I agree with everything you say, or at least appreciate it, except the last statement.
You aren't required to pay the full data plan for the duration of the contract if you don't have the iPhone 4 anymore. You can simply say you lost it or sold it.

Wish I had known that before! My GF had a 3GS that she lost and was told that whether or not she replaced it with an Iphone, she would have to keep the data plan on her account =/ sounded fishy to me at the time too but we didn't really fight it, just got her a new phone...
Hello folks, Ive lurked here for a while and gotten great info and am hoping to get some help here. I apologize if some of what Im asking is obvious to you folks but it isnt to me so here I am. I tried HoFo but got no help there.
Ive been using factory unlocked Sony Xperias for a while (Z, ZL, Z Ultra)so never had this issue before, but I have an HTC One M8 coming and unfortunately its ATT branded, though I bought it from a private seller and not ATT themselves. Im also grandfathered into unlimited data for many years now, and with my Sonys can turn on mobile hotspot anytime and use my data with ATT none the wiser. Now Im assuming since I was dumb enough to buy an ATT phone, I will be told to contact ATT once I pop in my SIM and try to turn on mobile hotspot, is this correct? If so, will unlocking the phone resolve this issue? As of now ATT has no idea Ive bought this phone, nor did they ever even recognize my Sonys because they never sold them, but since this is an ATT M8, Im assuming theyll know immediately what Im using, identify my plan and lock me out. Im hoping I can get around that.
I also imagine since its an ATT phone it will have all sorts of abilities locked out and a lot of fluff added in. How can I get the features unlocked? Is there anyway to buy a carrier branded phone and get it to be similar to one that was bought factory unlocked from the beginning and never branded?
Any help and advice would be appreciated and TIA
Ok, if I asked too much stuff there that was obvious to you but not me, can someone just please tell me if unlocking the bootloader will at least unlock the mobile hotspot function for me so I can turn it on?
Well, just unlocked, rooted, s-off and twrpd my first phone. What a b*tch, lol! But I had to learn one of these days. Sadly, still cant get the native or any other mobile hotspot app to work though. I saw a thread about a VZW M8 hack but still cant seem to find anything for this ATT thing. No one even willing to talk to me?

You can try wiFi Tether Router. Its in the play market but you have to pay $2.50 for it. Has worked for me. I don't think this app can be dectected by the carriers like ATT because it does't use the native hotspot of the phone.
Youll have to flash a custom rom that has this feature [email protected] and is debloated, xarrier build will block it and tell you to conract them.....
This is not going to help you at all, but I pay the extra $30 per month. I use up to 50GB of data each month tethering, and I want to make sure the my carrier doesn't block me.
So now that I've done my service by telling you to do the right thing, you use to be able to go in using SQLLite and turn off the checker. For VZW it was around line 149 - 160. Can't remember. I would think you could do that for AT&T. Maybe someone knows? Or maybe AT&T doesn't work like that any more, of maybe KK doesn't work like that any more.
So this guy wants to give me his HTC one m8 for my nexus 5 and my nexus 7. I don't really mind trading both since I don't use the tablet much and I know that the HTC costs like $650 brand new. So, the guy says it's a t mo one (although unlocked), paid off, rooted, with s-off, and he's running cm11. I can check all that since im not new to rooting at all. My question is this: is there a RELIABLE method for "unlimiting" my tethering. On my nexus, I have unlimited tethering thru t mo made possible simply by the ROMs I'm running. I know there is also a simple mod I can run on the nexus 5, using any ROM, that will also "unlimit" the tethering. The tethering serves as internet for my whole house (i also enabled it on my wife's s4) and it works better than comcast ever did. So I'm hoping that on the HTC one m8 there is either, a) a reality where practically all custom ROMs will enable the unlimited tethering, or b) there is a simple mod for any ROM that will do the trick.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
Unlimited here, running Insertcoin.

Hey guys,
I'd like to pick up the M8 in store tomorrow and had some noob questions... possibly should have used the search button, but here goes :silly:
Is the T-Mobile model easily bootloader unlockable?
Is it straightforward to convert to GPE? I gather this requires S-Off - is this doable?
Does the phone come SIM-unlocked, so I can use it with local European SIM cards?
How bad is the T-Mobile bloat? Part of me wants to stick with the T-Mobile ROM for wi-fi calling.
Is anyone using this phone with Xposed & Gravitybox? Interested to hear your experience
Thanks!

Hello, I'm not an expert but I have the T-Mobile HTC one M8 and I can answer some of the questions
Is the T-Mobile model easily bootloader unlockable?
Yes, you go to the HTC dev page and you can request the bin file to unlock it, just search tutorial videos in Youtube.
[*]Is it straightforward to convert to GPE? I gather this requires S-Off - is this doable?
It requires S-Off, and I ended up paying the 25 dollars for the app to get it S-Off and it worked, now I have gone back from GPE to Sense two times as I keeps missing things from one an another, in GPE I miss some of the features of Sense and In Sense I miss all the battery savings that I can achieve having a rooted GPE...
Does the phone come SIM-unlocked, so I can use it with local European SIM cards?
I comes SIM-Locked, but I if you have been with t-mobile for a while (a couple of months) and you already paid off the device you can just go to the support page and do a live chat to request the SIM unlock, they send me my code the same day but it can take up to two days to get it and it and they don't ask questions or charge you for that, you can unlock up to two devices per year, per line using your account.
How bad is the T-Mobile bloat? Part of me wants to stick with the T-Mobile ROM for wi-fi calling.
there are about three apps and you can disable them (which I did)
Is anyone using this phone with Xposed & Gravitybox? Interested to hear your experience
I did not used them.
Thanks!

Cool thanks man!
I'm trying to decide between T-Mobile version or the Developer Edition - I will be paying up front, so want to make sure I get the most suitable version of the phone!
