I'm a total Noob, I got my Android HTC DESIRE HD yesterday. Since then, I have rooted, s-off, super cid'ed and even loaded on cyanogen 7...
I'm luvin it.. so far but there is one thing that is distracting me from normal life, from my work, my girlfriend(s).... and it's that, and excuse my language, that f##king tmobile boot up image! i bloody hate with all the hate that I have in my body.
I don't understand
fastboot flash splash1 xxxxxx.img ?? < wht does that mean?!
I tried android flasher, no use..
Please, can someone tell me in plain english what I have to, im on windows, i got mac and linux,
someone out there please please please help me.. before I take a hammer and smash all the tmobile store windows.. (well maybe not that but something along those lines)
PLEASE HELP ME ANDROID COMMUNITY --- I WANT TO BE FREE AND LIBERATED FROM THESE BRANDS!!
many thanks
You need to have ENG S-OFF before you can use fastboot commands. You sure you have it?
... I followed a guide,
all I have used visionary tool, then I used easy radio tool to apply S-OFF
... then, I used romManager to flash the phone with cyanogen....
,I do not know how to use fastboot comands, I can learn, sure, but could you please point me in the right direction..
There is radio S-OFF and there is also ENG S-OFF, there is a one click tool for ENG (Windows) S-OFF in the dev threads.
Without ENG S-OFF you won't be able to run fastboot commands (I was stuck with a similar issue for about 2 weeks lol)
Thank you guys, very helpful and I have successfully changed my splash/boot image..
:: for everyone follow this guide nothing to it.. but that's right you need ENG - S OFF First .. i've upload 1-click eng - s-off tool.. for everyone to use, thanks to developers!! and thanks to everyone!!!
I used this guide next http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795132 ... not too technical
..though u can also use Android flasher .. think it should also work after using eng s-off.. with this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638

What exactly is "the finish line"? Like @bigp951 said, we need more details. Please list everything you've done to this point and exactly what you're doing that returns that error.
I'm no expert but the process i used was.
- Get phone, Unlock bootloader via htcdev, (hadnt realise the sunshine apk does both unlocking bootloader and s-off at the time >< doh!), then s-off using sunshine, flash custom recovery via fastboot, flash superSU and install superSU apk for root, flash 1.40.401.x firmware with fastboot, flash viper rom (i had to do this twice as the first time an error came up which was helpfully listed in the troubleshooting section of the dev's post for viper, boom, it was all done. Backed up for safety
hope that helps you get to the source of the error.
when you say you flashed supersu and then installed supersu apk, what does that mean? I ask because when you flash the beta-superSu it installs the apk for you. But then again you had to be rooted to get s-off (someone correct me if I am wrong). Also, did you check the md5 before you tried to flash? Did you file a ticket with team viper? What was the error that showed up on the first failed attempt? Did you post on the viperonem9 thread and ask them for help? what is your cid and mid? supercid may help... and what is the current state of the phone? Is it still working?? Can you go into recovery? Still lots of questions.
If you want a clean slate to start over with find the CORRECT RUU and run it. Then you will be stock all over again (disclaimer--Find the RUU thread and follow instructions completely).
Obviously I am no expert either. I just run through the troubleshooting list when problems arise. But I try to help or point you in the direction of someone who can.
EDIT- there is also a newer official version of twrp for the m9. As @jollywhitefoot asked, you did not state what the finish line is nor what you were doing to return the error. If you installed the rom and made a backup than it sounds like the phone was working...

You don't need an RUU for that.
After unlocking the bootloader and installing custom recovery TWRP; use TWRP to make a backup "nandroid" of the stock ROM.
If you have problems rooting, you can just restore the backup nandroid using TWRP.
How to do that... I mean unlock the bootloader and flash twrp...? I've searched and found procedure but not getting the twrp version for my os (6.0)
And what about s-off or on please make me understand these things also dude.....

To unlock the bootloader, simply go to HTCDev.com, and follow the process there to setup a login and unlock the bootloader. There are full instruction on the website on how to unlock bootloader.

From what I understand (you should research and confirm) the same TWRP version works for all M8 variants (including dual SIM). TWRP 3.0.0.0 is the latest:
https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
After unlocking the bootloader, follow the instruction to flash TWRP with fastboot.
After installing TWRP, flash SuperSU 2.65 or later to root Marshmallow.

What about s-off? Why do you think you need it? I don't think you would be able to do much with s-off on the m8 dual SIM.
Thank you dude i will try.... But i owned a110q and whenever it get hangs i just flash rom to make it butter smooth... And in my htc one m8 dugl also i need the flashing file which can use to make it butter smooth as before and unbrick if i messup... So in short i need rom or ruu whatever.... Of marshmallow... What you're asking for are all basic questions answered a dozen times all around this forum. Please use the search function an read the how tos on how to unlock, flash TWRP, backup, root and uproot/back to stock guides. Those will give you all the information you'll need. It's better to do a little reading to understand what one's doing instead of being spoon feed step by step without the prior named knowledge. That exact knowledge is everything in case something will go wrong, as we can only help people who can describe exactly in which step it occurred.
Send by the swarm intelligence of my coffee machine ?.

There may not be an RUU available for your phone. However, before someone here can help you, you need to post the getvar results as ckpv5 said earlier. If you don't have fastboot installed on your computer, you need to do that first. Plug your phone into a usb port on your computer and then, open the folder on your computer that fastboot.exe is in. Then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on a blank spot in the folder. In the menu that appears, choose command prompt here. In command prompt window that opens, type fastboot getvar all. Then copy and paste the output from the command here. Remove the imei and serial number before posting it here.

If you tell the firmware version which you flashed, it is easy to tell the way to stock. s-off is not a problem, if you can spend 25$. if your expectation is only go to a updated stock, it is not necessary to s-off. If your bootloader is not unlocked, twrp can't be installed. If your firmware is up to date, it is okay to make bootloader unlocked.

What you are asking for sounds kinda sketchy. If someone were to backup and share their mmcblk0 partition with you, you would have everything written to their internal storage in there.
I might be wrong with this, but I don't think I am.

Ikr but I'm not after the personal files. My M8 died and recognized as usb qdloader 9008. No fastboot, no recovery, black screen no signs of life. I need the dumped mmcblk and try to kickstart hboot via SD or linux so I can flash its RUU. And if it'll be a success I will post the procedure how i revived it that can serve as a reference for others who may encounter same problem.
if its with privacy issue then i dont mind a dump of a fresh factory reset phone.

How to root my HTC One M8 (Android 6.0)?

I would like to root my M8, it has the latest OTA update from HTC which is Android 6.0. I have the developer edition, from what I've heard, the bootloader is already unlocked right?
I've seen some guides but most of them are outdated or they are meant to be used with Android 4.4.4.
I must say I'm not an expert when talking about phones, so is there a step by step guide to root an M8 with marshmallow? I would really appreciate any help.
The bootloader screen will indicate the bootloader status (LOCKED, UNLOCKED or RELOCKED) near the top of the screen.
In general, the process is:
1) Unlock the bootloader by HTCDev.com (if its not already unlocked).
2) Fastboot flash TWRP 3.0 custom recovery: https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
3) Backup your stock ROM in TWRP - lots of folks have been running into bootloop or no boot after trying to root (but probably usually when trying to use an obsolete version TWRP and/or SuperSU - but it never hurts to be safe and have a backup).
4) In TWRP, flash SuperSU v2.76 to root: https://download.chainfire.eu/969/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip

Nope, that is just fine. S-on is perfectly okay for most mods, such as root, and flashing ROMs.
You only need s-off to do some very specific things, such as flashing modified hboots, manually flashing radio, changing CID&MID, downgrading by RUU, etc.
I have a simple doubt regarding flashing twrp. Does this means I can flash twrp through adb without getting root access to get root access.I usually root my devices using kingroot, works perfect for my old phone micromax. It also works for my htc one m8 when it was kitkat. But after I update to marshmallow Kingroot doesn't work for it,tried many times. If you could answer my question I would be very thankfull

what carrier ? if you are on gsm just flash TWRP 3.0.2-0 from official website
https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
after you flash TWRP recovery you will find option to backup it's too easy to understand how it works ( just check the partitions you want to backup and confirm your choices by sweep to proceed the process )
after you make a backup flash the latest supersu.zip from here ( choose TWRP installable.zip )

I think you're looking at some really outdated info or guide. TWRP hasn't been carrier specific for about 2 years; with Verizon and Sprint being the only ones you had to look out for. But TWRP was unified long ago (so Sprint/Verizon no longer requires a different TWRP version). You'll see from ahmed's link, that it specifies "All variants" of the M8. The exception would be if you have an M8s; and maybe another oddball variant or two (which are really different hardware). But as long as its a true "M8" the TWRP version linked by ahmed will work.
If you have any doubts or concerns about the M8 version, connect the phone to your computer, reboot to fastboot mode and do command fastboot getvar all and post the results so we can take a look (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

No, you can't flash SuperSU without first flashing TWRP. Why would threads/guides tell you to do something that isn't necessary, if you can just skip it?
Simply put, you can only flash official "signed" files from the stock recovery. You need a custom recovery like TWRP to flash SuperSU.

Once you install TWRP, you can use it to create a backup of your stock unrooted ROM and user data. And its highly recommended to do so, before you flash SuperSU. Not only will this give you an easy way to revert/recover if something goes wrong with the root attempt; but you will also have a backup of your stock, unrooted ROM if you ever want it.
There are other ways to backup your data, but that depends on what "stuff" you are talking about (as that vague description doesn't tell us what you actually want to backup). For instance, for files, photos, etc. you can just copy and paste them to your computer as a backup.

Firewater was an all-in-one kit used to unlock bootloader and achieve s-off. The guys that created this went on to create Sunshine, leaving firewater project behind, so any guides from 2014 are likely obsolete. Unlocking the bootloader is as simple as going to htcdev.com, making an account and following the instructions there-it's super easy. S-off isn't necessary for most.

Firewater and the AIO (all-in-one) toolkit are 2 different things. Firewater is an (obsolete) s-off method. May have also contained a temp root, and some other things (can't remember exactly, it's been 2 years - and doesn't matter anyway - see more below). But firewater is not typically referred to as a "toolkit" or "all-in-one" (never seen it referred to that way, actually).
All-in-one toolkit (there are a couple) is a PC for unlocking the bootloader, root, and several other things (may have had a link for firewater, don't remember - again it's irrelevant for reasons below).
The toolkits are not recommended. They haven't been updated in a long time, and therefore use very obsolete files for TWRP and SuperSU (when applicable). You will have issues flashing many ROMs with old TWRP (and I'm surprised you haven't yet). Plus, you will probably find in bootloader and fastboot getvar, that the OS number is now blank (known bug in old versions of TWRP). I would suggest flashing the current version TWRP 3.1.1 using fastboot, to prevent issues moving forward. Current TWRP is fully compatible with current ROMs - but will not fix the bug of OS number being blank (need to flash firmware or RUU to fix that - but it's just a minor thing).
Firewater doesn't work, no matter what you do. It required an online server component, which the devs took offline over 2 years ago. Sunshine ($25 US) is the only current s-off method. But be aware, that most folks don't need s-off. S-off isn't needed to root, flash custom ROMs, and most other mods. s-off is only needed for very specific things, such as manually flashing radios, changing CID/MID, and some other things.
redpoint73 thank you so much for such a help truly gentleman much appreciate it .
It appears you can no longer use the usual method to unlock the bootloader. I just got this phone the other day in fantastic condition as a gift.
HTCDev told me there was an error or try again later. I'll upload screenshots later.
Not true... I used www.htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader of my HTC One M8 today.
I have this phone, with Android 6.0 and bootloader locked. However it has become practically unusable as it regularly powers off by itself, most likely due to lack of storage (there's only 0.6 GB left...). I've already uninstalled all of my few (useful) apps, I have no media on it whatsoever, but it is just filled up with bloatware that is pre-installed and gets re-installed automatically and that I thus cannot get rid of. I don't want to buy a new phone (it's in good condition) but from reading on the internet I understand that the only option is to unlock and root it, and put an oem on it exempt of all of these useless apps.
So my questions are, is this really the only option and if so is it still possible on this old machine to unlock the bootloader, and to get the right - clean - software for it somewhere?
I registered at HtC dev. There's a page that walks you through the unlocking process. So I should be able to do that part, if what FlexMcMurphy said in July last year still is true... For the rest, I'm quite new to this process but there are pages here on XDA that describe rooting and flashing. I'm ready to give it a try, but could use help if stuck.
Any reply/help would be wonderful !
Thank you in advance.
