I'm getting about 2/3 notifications a day about 'Mobile broadcast'.
I'd read these can be turned off in SMS app, but I've unchecked all of that and they're still coming through, how do you turn them off??? Getting quite annoying now!
Yeah I get that once a day saying 0141 mobile broadcast with a megaphone icon next to it ... No idea what the hell it is, so maybe someone out there can tell us
Try settings > more > emergency broadcast turn off all
Yep this works
But what if I need it in case of sudden war/end of time/killer potato invasion/avalanche notification?
It's quite annoying getting 3-5 same welcome notifications from emergency services every day.

If I disable auto retrieve text messages and data roaming, does that mean I won't be charged for them until I turn it back on?
I'm going to London tomorrow from the US and had done something in the past, I thought I had called them last year when I went and they turned off texting, but they claim they cannot do it (even though I told them several times that I they had done it last year). They also claimed that I didn't have texting, which they did finally see.
I have about 200 software applications that I would have to update. I plan on taking my phone and since I only make one or two calls, I don't care about the $1 or $2 charge I get.
not working
There were two other places I found where I could disable auto retrieve / data roaming and what have you, but when I turned it on this afternoon, it downloaded 20 messages. Not nice at all.

The only thing that really seems to be working is going to the account services and blocking text messages.
Hello
So I have experienced my first "bug" with my GN (or maybe it's ICS?)
I was browsing in chrome when I noticed at the bottom it said "message received" in an overlay. As you do when you get a message while using the phone.
What didn't happen was it didn't scroll through the message at the top of the screen in the status bar. I thought it was a bit weird. So I opened my messages and nothing new was there. It didnt make any sound either, so I thought I was crazy and moved on.
As I was having a conversation with my partner at the time, she messaged me a few mins later wondering what my response was and I told her I didn't receive anything at all.
This is quite concerning. The phone most definitely recognised I got a message but it didn't show up. She said she sent 2 messages. Has anyone else experienced something similar?
We're both on the same network if its even possible this could be a carrier issue.
The "message received by <phone number>" toast message at the bottom of the screen is the other party receiving one of your messages. You turn this on in Messaging > Settings > Delivery reports. This will show next to the time stamp of every sent message in a thread the SMS icon with a green check mark over it whenever the message is confirmed to be received by the other party
You not receiving messages is a different issue. Try installing something like "Ghostly SMS" to see if your phone is losing SMS messages. I haven't heard of this as an issue in ICS yet.
I got a friend of mine to switch from an iPhone to an S3 and he called me yesterday explaining that he is having trouble getting all MMS text messages ( and sometimes regular texts too). He eventually gets them but they are hours later. He is using Go SMS but the stock messaging app is not working any better.
I went through all my settings with him to make sure he was set up the same as I am and he was. So I cannot figure out why he is getting all his MMS texts so late.
Sometimes he gets a message that says there is a media download and gives and expiration time but there is no attachment with it.
Anyone have any ideas?

I had the same issue when I switched from iPhone to my s3.... Ask him if his mobile data is ON. if not the phone will not download the attachment even if on wifi the mobile data has to be on for it to work.
Also make sure his data plan has been changed to a lte plan.

Make sure that the date, time, and time zone settings are correct
I switched from the iphone 4 to the SIII and I too had this same issue.
My buddy who also had an iphone was trying to text me but I would get it hours late. Remember when Iphone users could start messaging each other without the cost of text? I have a strong feeling this was the issue. I actually didn't do anything to fix the problem, it last about 5 days and with enough usage of the phone I finally started to get my texts on time.

It sounds like they are on a pay as you go tarrif and every time he starts his phone a service on his phone uses his credit/balance.
Is this right chiujiewei?
Is it a text/SMS message or is it a notification from an app? Are you using a custom ROM or stock? Any chance of a screenshot of this in action?
thanks for the reply i found the solution..its a text/SMS message receive from the service.. there was preoblem in the message settings where push messages etc are mentioned..each time an sms is sent automatically at phone start without me knowing
i just disabled the option and reset the message settings
