Unlocked HTC 10 issues with T-Mobile - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I've just done a bit of traveling with my carrier unlocked HTC 10 on T-Mobile's network, and I've encountered quite a lot of reception issues with this device. I'm not sure what the issue is, but am curious about others experiences road tripping with this device.
Previously I've only used the phone in my home area (Chicago). The device has performed flawlessly there. This past week, however, I road tripped to Maine and back and had a lot of problems with coverage. I'm fairly new to T-Mobile, so I would normally write it off as their network, but my wife's iPhone 6s performed great in these areas, as did my Moto X Pure Edition.
Here are some of the issues I experienced:
In rural Maine, while the phone was roaming on AT&T, many incoming calls and texts would not come through at all. This behavior was intermittent, despite having 3+ bars of AT&T signal.
While the phone was roaming on AT&T, many outgoing texts would fail to send. Rebooting the phone was often the only way to get them to go through. Again, this was with strong AT&T signal.
Moving between AT&T and T-Mobile coverage areas in rural Maine, the phone would fail to reconnect to T-Mobile service on its own. In order to make this work, I would either have to reboot the phone, toggle airplane mode, manually select T-Mobile under Mobile network settings -> GSM/UMTS Options -> Network operators or, if those all failed, run the LTE Discovery app. I'm not sure why that would make the phone reconnect to T-Mobile service, but it seemed to do so consistently.
The phone would lose signal completly in areas where our iPhone 6s and Moto X Pure Edition had LTE signal
The phone would lose LTE signal and move to 2G/EDGE or no mobile data at all in areas where our iPhone 6s and Moto X had LTE signal
I've seen similar issues discussed over in http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/awful-lte-signal-update-t3378163, but it seems I'm experiencing more than just weak LTE signal.
Has anybody else experienced anything similar? Or am I having some sort of hardware issue? It seems crazy to me that this device would perform so poorly compared to the iPhone 6s and Moto X Pure Edition, both of which are also carrier unlocked. HTC told me I should try a new SIM, otherwise there might be a hardware issue, but I'm wondering if this is more widespread than just my device.

Haven't had any issues with mine
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk

I live in Maine and haven't encountered any issues yet. Although I do live in So Maine so T-Mobile is pretty solid here. I would try the new SIM to see if that fixes the problem.
Are you s-off and unlocked? If so which firmware version are you on? The US Unlocked version or something else? If you're not on the US unlocked firmware I would try flashing that, if you're S-Off. If that fails to fix it then I'd suspect a hardware issue.

I'm on the US Unlocked version--not sure if it's s-off, I haven't done anything to it myself, so I'm using it however it came from HTC. Not sure if they are s-off by default or not.
Unfortunately I won't be back to Maine to test this new SIM this year. I guess I'll have to test locally side by side with my wife's iPhone to try to determine if it's still dropping coverage so regularly once I get out of a metro area.

I have a T-Mobile model that is running unlocked firmware and I experience switching problems when moving from wifi to lte. Simply put, I cannot connect to T-Mobile after leaving wifi unless I reboot the phone.

Do you use the LTE Discovery app? I wonder if that would work for you too, running though that process once usually made my phone pick T-Mobile signal back up.

I have in the past on other phones and I will try here

same problem
I had a same experience where my phone roamed onto AT&T network and it would not come back to T-mobile network. This happened when traveling from Michigan to Columbus OH and Michigan to West Virginia.
Both of the time, only way to fix was go to advanced setting and choose carrier or reboot phone.

Loss of signal, no auto reconnect.

I am having an issue on my One X (unbranded and unlocked) with the signal vanishing and not reconnecting unless I force it. I was wondering whether it effects all networks or just networks that use more than one carrier. Three has its own 3G network but it uses Orange 2G signal. I also saw a thread with the same issue on T-Mobile / Orange which is also dual carrier.
I am wondering whether it is the switch between these networks which is causing it to lose signal and not reconnect.
I have had several instances where my signal has an R next to it as if it is roaming, this would be when it is connected to the Orange 2G network, I never had this problem on my Desire HD or Sensation.
Does anyone know of any issues on Vodafone or O2 regarding signal loss or is it just networks which use multiple carriers.
My One X is stock and bootloader has not been unlocked.
Thoughts?

Are you still on the 126 SW?
As your unbranded then you should be able to get the 128 update.
With 126, my Three handset recieve level was about -88 to 91dbm.
With 128 its now at -75dbm in the same location.
Most, if not all of the roam to Orange has now been disabled, remaining where there is no Three signal at all.
Steve
No I have upgraded to 1.28, unfortunately I am still in an area where it does switch to Orange 2G signal.
It seems to hang on to 3G until I have virtually no signal, then goes to no signal and doesn't reconnect unless I force it. It seems to mostly happen when I put the phone away on my pocket so I dont notice I have no signal until I check my phone.
I lost signal today and to test the reconnect I left the screen on and I drove about 20 miles through large-ish towns and it didn't reconnect once, had to force it when I got home.
Not sure if this effects single carrier networks, O2 or Vodafone?

Have you had the same issue with any other handset?
Are you a new customer to Three and this is the first you have seen of this?
Reason I ask is when I was thinking of going to Three for my main phone, I tested with a handset I just used for tethering off the one plan.
I drove out of town to an area where I guessed there would be no Three coverage.
The signal hung on for ages but when it dropped I made a note of where it dropped. After a few moments the handset went over to Orange 2g. I then drove back home. I must of drove at least 5 miles past the point I noted earlier before the Orange signal itself dropped and had to force the handset to Three myself.
This sounds similar to your issue and was with a Desire S….but you say you didnt have this with previous handsets. All very strange
Steve
I've had a Desire HD and a Sensation both on Three and never had issue on either of these.
There must be something different about the way the One X handles the switch of signal, or maybe it's just faulty.
Might try some other SIM's from other networks, if that doesn't work I'll get a replacement.

I have this phone second day and I see this signal problem as well, I got iphone 4s in Three and HTC One X in Three as well and in same place Iphone show me 3G connection and 3 bars, HTC show only one bar and sometime nothing.
How get update to1.28?
I check update via my phone and nothing show me
My phone have no 1.26

I'm on three and it never seems to switch to gsm just looses signal all together and takes ages to reconnect once I move location. this is a proper pain I've had the phone replaced three times changed sim still not got better I'm thinking its the radio version on this phone or some software related issue.
If you're phone is from Three you won't get the update until Three release it.
I did see on another thread that Three won't be releasing 1.28 as HTC are currently working on the next update. Don't know how true that is.
My phone is unbranded and unlocked to any network, which is why I got the update.
Think I'm going to get a replacement and see if that's any better, hope it's not a general issue with the one X having lower signal.

If you dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone and select phone info you can select GSM only which is 2G, this really improves signal but because it's 2G you are stuck on really slow data speeds.
If that is the case and you've had 3 replacements, maybe it's worth holding out for the next update to see if that fixes the problem.
I'm a little uneasy about returning it for a replacement as I don't have any other problems with it (bad screen seal, banding on display or yellow display) I may end up with more problems with a replacement.

Is any chance change three rom on factory rom?
I had similar issues to what you are describing with yours on my original unlocked/unbranded HOX on T-Mobile. I had issues on top of the ones you mentioned where it was also saying I had a signal and had appeared to lock up and would just drop the mobile network and say at the bottomg of the screen "preparing sim".
Most the time I was stuck with putting it in and out of airplane mode to make calls, only for them to drop or fail all together.
This was on both 1.26 and 1.28 FW. In the end I took mine back and swapped it and the replacement has been perfect since. so it was without doubt a hardware fault in my case!
Good luck solving your problem, but I would suggest taking it back and getting a straight swap.

You can't change you ROM unless you unlock the Bootloader at HTCDev and this will void your warranty with HTC.
Three will release an update eventually, and 1.28 is no better signal wise for me than 1.26 was!!

Interesting, I too had the Preparing Sim message until I got a new SIM from Three, this seemed to fix this message but I am still having Signal Problems.
I think I'll follow your lead and go for a replacement, I have to use Airplane mode to force the signal to reconnect as well.
Thanks
I can confirm I have these problems. I'm on three but the phone was from Dialaphone and with orange but is unlocked. I have exactly the same problems as those been described. This is a very irritating problem that makes me miss calls and texts in my poor 3 signal area.

I think you're best off to return it for a replacement, that's what i'm going to do. Hopefully that will fix my problem and not create any more!!
I have the same issue on my device. On my 2nd replacement and its still the same.
No problems with my iPhone 4S.
Hopefully a radio update will sort this out.

I think it might depend on location, in some areas the 2G signal (Three use Orange network for 2G) has been turned off. In my Area (South West England) I still have access to the 2G GSM Signal.
Obviously Three save a lot of money from turning off GSM and not paying Orange to use their network.

[Q] T-Mobile SM-P607T - cannot connect to 2G/Edge network?

Hello gang,
I picked up a new T-Mobile Note 10.1 2014 edition 2 days ago. So far, everything seems to be great. There is one issue however that seems perplexing. My tablet connects to 4G and LTE networks just fine but for some reason, it will not connect to 2G/Edge networks near my home. I live in a rural part of PA where T-Mobile doesn't have 4G/LTE coverage. My Samsung Galaxy S3 connects to the Edge network near my house without issue. However, my tablet does not connect and simply shows a small X where the signal meter is.
I spoke to T-Mobile tech support this morning and they seem to think that the band covering 2G may be dead. Could this be possible when 4G and LTE work just fine?
Also, the options under Network mode are now limited to 2: LTE/WCDMA (auto connect) and WCDMA only. My SGS3 has a GSM only option which the tablet seems to be missing.
I am running Android 4.4.2. Any thoughts / suggestions?
Thanks!

I can't state this as a fact for the tmo P607T but remember that the tmo 3g version of the
Samsung galaxy tab plus 7.0 had a similar situation. Users were looking to add phone functions
to this device.
Turned out on the xda threads that the tmo tab plus 7.0 had no hardware
to support phone functions as the international version did.

The GSM mode only makes it so you can force the Device into 2g or Edge mode. If you do not want to use LTE just pick WCDMA which is 3g/HSPA+ and GSM(2g/edge). If you are looking to turn off the T-Mobile data part Pull the Sim card out or just put the Tablet into Airplane mode which you can till turn on Wifi. I bought my Note just for Wifi, and using EIP. So i am not using it with T-Mobile Data. getting a data plan on the tablet is a big waste when you can just hotpsot your phone.

Well, it turns out that my tablet is defective. T-Mobile is sending me a replacement. I spoke to several tier 2 techs including one Samsung specialist and they all concurred that the band governing 2g on my Note must be inoperative. Weird right?
Well I got my replacement Note in the mail yesterday and it also will not connect to the 2G/Edge network near my house. I highly doubt I could have gotten 2 bad tablets in a row so there's something else amiss here. Perhaps the specs on T-Mo's website is incorrect and this new device simply doesn't have the capability to go to 2G/Edge or the modem firmware being used is a crippled version.
Very disappointed to say the least; yes Edge is horrendously slow but can be beneficial in a pinch sometimes. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think you're right; despite unlocking mine and using it on AT&T (which does have better coverage), there's places on my commute where there's 4 bars, yet no data transfer. I've yet to see an "E" or "3G" symbol, either.
I'm thinking about trying to flash the P605M radio, but that'll have to wait 'till the weekend.

Please keep me posted on your results if you do end up flashing the modem. I'd be very interested to see what you discover.
I wonder if this move by T-Mo to cut 2g/Edge compatibility has something to do with their rumored intention of converting all of their 2g spectrum to 4g? Even if that were true though, that precludes using this as an unlocked device in other areas or countries that may only have 2g/3g coverage. What about data roaming?

Well, turns out that I might put that off a little bit later than the weekend- I've since had mine unlocked and as it gets the VZW LTE bands, I'm going to see how well it does on that (VZW drops back to CDMA in non-LTE areas, so I'd be completely without service). VZW LTE is pretty ubiquitous from what I'd seen with my OG Xoom, but if it turns out I lose service on the train in large spots I'll revisit GSM options again.
Besides, I might just flash the radios just to see what happens

Awful LTE signal after update

I have an unlocked 10 running on T-Mobile US. I previously had no problems at home with a 4G LTE connection. But after updating to 1.53.617.5 this week, my LTE signal at home has completely disappeared on me. What's worse, the phone shows full bars, and won't drop to a slower connection. I have to manually switch to 4G/WCDMA (Auto) and use the slower 4G connection, which I presume is HSDPA.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? I even did a factory reset, but it didn't help whatsoever.
Between this and the weak Wi-Fi, I'm starting to have second thoughts about this phone.

My LTE and wifi signal are slightly weaker on the 10 than what I'm used to seeing. Also on Tmo US. My LTE drops when I'm not upstairs lol. I took the ota when I first started up the phone so I can't speak for the other version.

I just tried wiping the cache partition. No dice.
I installed the OpenSignal app to see what's going on. It seems that the phone is locking onto a cell tower that's many miles away (in the middle of a river!), instead of many LTE cell towers that are only a block away from me. This makes no sense. It also indicates full reception.
The latest update definitely messed something up. Perhaps it's related to the "Wi-Fi stability enhancements".

I have this problem as well, spoke to T-Mobile and of course they tried to blame it on the phone saying that they cannot guarantee that an unlocked phone will work with their network. I proceeded to tell them that the phone was listed as fully compatible with T-Mobile's LTE network they had no answer. I know it's not a solution at all but I'm on T-Mobile's prepaid service so at the beginning of next month just before I need to make a payment I'm switching to AT&T to see if that is any better
I'm somewhat disappointed and I really don't know if I should return the phone or not

While I do think the 10 doesn't get a signal as strongly as other phones do (my S6 was great), I think the latest firmware (1.53) has impacted reception for the worse.
Wait till HTC release T-Mobile RUU , you can change your mid, cid to tmo and flash it.

I shouldn't have to flash the phone to get it to work. Also, the purpose of getting the unlocked version was to have a carrier-free phone.
The more I use this phone, the more I notice that LTE connectivity is screwed up. It likes to lock onto the wrong cell towers that offer no reception (but still display full bars).
What's interesting is that when I turn on Wi-Fi, the phone locks onto the correct cell towers.
Forget the camera; HTC needs to resolve all these radio connectivity issues!

I agree the purpose of getting the unlocked phone was to not have to have a carrier branded device. I noticed that as well with the phone connecting to be incorrect tower. It really is frustrating because I've already started paying for my phone so I don't want to have to return it, I like all aspects of it physically but something has to be done about this reception. I used to get 4 to 5 bars and now I'm lucky if I get two
This is really ridiculous, I've only had my phone off the charger for just over an hour and I've used 10% of battery. I don't keep Wi-Fi on all the time I only had to turn it on to use Wi-Fi calling because my signal is so bad, HTC really needs to do something with the radios in this phone because the poor cell signal is just killing my battery life. Is anybody experiencing this same problem?

You have a massive wake lock. Your issue doesn't reside with the radio.

Root your phone and then install better battery stats or gsam or any other utility that can show you specific wakelock stats and info. From there you can use that info to track down the specific wakelock.

Perhaps it's an app that's draining your battery.
I found that the Wi-Fi activity stat is wrong. Even on airplane mode, my 10 says that Wi-Fis active.

LTE everywhere EXCEPT New York City; Verizon says Buy a new phone. What?

I'm using a Toro Nexus that was recently given to me by a coworker and it works great everywhere except where I live and work. It simply refuses to connect to LTE within NYC, where it stays on 3G. As soon as I get outside of the city it has great LTE connectivity which allows me to make use of my unlimited data plan.
I started out stock, then flashed to 4.4, 5.1 and even tried the latest experimental ROMs without any change. Verizon did whatever testing they do on their end and said that, because of the buildings in NYC, the phone is incapable of receiving LTE. That sounded like a crock of crap to me so, using a few of my remaining grey cells, I put my sim card into my wife's Galaxy Note 3 and, voila! no more LTE.
So I'm getting ready to make an angry call to Verizon when I think, why not try the wife's sim in my Toro. Result: 3G only. Pop it back into the Note: LTE.
Dang! Can anyone offer some insight as to what is going on?
Thanks for any help.

When you go to Settings, what is the signal strength reported?
I have a ex-VZW GNex (toro) that I have moved to Tracfone; I have every reason to believe that Tracfone uses (mostly) T-Mobile towers in my area, and I have ALWAYS had signal-strength issues via T-M towers. (Tracfone has towers assigned to it on a zip-code basis, and it's not always T-Mobile; in some zip codes, Tracfone uses VZW towers.) It could well BE tower-siting issues plaguing VZW in the Apple - which is, amazingly, smack dab in VZW's turf.
I wish there was a way to determine exactly WHICH tower that a phone aims at while on the move - so you can find "bum towers".

trouble finding 4G LTE after temp move to E (Edge)

Noticing something unusual now with my S8+ locking onto 4G LTE.
If I am in a 4G LTE area (40-50 down speeds on avg), then move to a poor coverage area (Edge only), then move back to the same 4G LTE area...my phone does not switch back to 4G LTE.
I have to restart my phone in order to connect to 4G LTE.
Turning off then turning on data doesn't work either...although shouldn't have to do this anyway.
Any suggestions? BTW, haven't touched the default phone settings and I have cellular network preferred in the wifi call setting if that matters. Network mode is LTE/4G/3G/2G. My phone is not rooted.
Thanks.
I've experienced this same issue I've actually had my s8+ replaced under warranty 5 times now... t-mobile is now having me contact samsung to send in my phone because they believe its a phone issue...
wow, really...
that stinks...and you know, only started after one of the recent updates, whatever was before the Bixby update... maybe coincident, maybe not.
Same issues here. I've had while running the T-Mo firmware and the unlocked firmware. Mine was originally the US Unlocked version purchased straight from Samsung.com.
I have that same problem too... Just put it in airplane mode for a few seconds to fix it.

That doesn't work for me. It's hit or miss. Sometimes it bounces back to LTE just fine, other times not. Yesterday, it got stuck on H+. Only a reboot would fix it.
well what the heck - guess i will visit the TMo store to see what they say...
