Intermittent LTE and 3G service - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For some strange reason, the LG D850 I got a while back from an ebay vendor never had a usable LTE or 3G service. I have a SIM card that works in other phones on the AT&T network, and to make sure I manually checked the ATT APN settings, but it still doesn't work. The LTE signal appears at totally random times, and then disappears equally strangely, and the phone spends a lot of time on the EDGE network. I live in an area where there is good LTE coverage pretty much everywhere 24/7, inside and outside buildings, which I have checked with other phones. I tried different ROMs, flashing new NV settings, unlocking new bands, etc. Nothing helps.

GSM & CDMA

I'm trying out a new TP2-CDMA from Telus (Canada) and this is by far the best system I could ever try in my case. I've always been a GSM user (since 1994) mostly because it gives you the latitude of using what ever device you want just by inserting your SIM card. so I got the Phone Inserted my Rogers SIM in it and it got me on the Rogers network right away I then activated the phone on the Telus network and it is also working fine... of course...
But the best thing is that I set it on "Global" network and it stays on GSM (Rogers), and when I get to an area where there is no GSM signal it switches by it self to the CDMA (Telus) network!!! this is amazing! NO MORE DEAD SPOTS! Of course you need to have two Service contract from two different service provider, but if you absolutely need to get service in areas where your current provider does not offer any, well it sure beats the hell out of having two different cellphone in your pocket... I have set my main cell number to transfer to the other on "No Answer after X # rings" and I get all my calls no mater what network I'm on!
The only down side to this TP2-CDMA Unit is that Telus got rid of a bunch of stuff that is in the TP2-GSM... like the GPS for instance... Well I guess you can't have it all...
Just thought I'd share my joy...
The GPS is working, actually it works pretty well.
rick#2,
You are right, the GPS works.
I was trying it with Google Maps and could not make it work because GM does not seem to be able to get the data connection on the GSM network to load the maps and I thought it did not have the GPS but it does and all other Maps SW works on both GSM and CDMA, except GM that does only work on the CDMA network on this particular device...
I've been using the GSM connection for the TP2 down in the states and I stay purely CDMA up here in Canada. I'd like to say that HSPA works on the GSM network but no dice... unfortunately... don't know why.
Hopefully the 850/1900MHz bands that are possibly physically present on our Telus TP2s can be made available somewhere down the line. It's too bad they aren't up and running now, since I'm headed down to Mexico in a week and they are all 850/1900 down there for their UMTS network.
Yeah..
I know what you mean
Perhaps this one can solve the issues....

Xperia Play Connecting to Edge, Not 3G

I bought an unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia Play R800i from Amazon to use with a Straight Talk sims card; however, I'm unable to connect to 3G. The phone only shows an Edge connection. Straight Talk specifies that the phone must operate in 850 and 1900 MHz bands. Here's what the Amazon page says about my phone:
This phone can be paired with 800/850/1800/1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G networks in the United States (as well as 900/2100 MHz 3G networks found around the world, including in Europe and Asia). In areas not served by a 3G network, you'll continue to receive 2G data service via the EDGE network (depending on network compatibility).
I might be wrong, but doesn't that mean it operates under Straight Talks specifications?

i have the same issue but with my carrier offering 3G at 2100 Mhz which is Xperia Play supporting. When searching for carrier it shows me just 2G provider, non 3G. when WCDMA only selected, i lose signal. I am in coverage of 3G and my plan is supporting it.
Could it be hardware issue? i did factory reset but still having this issue. Connections just through EDGE, GPRS or Wifi

I purchased an R800at from Amazon, which, according to that thread, should be able to connect to 3G correctly.
I've unlocked the bootloader, and flashed CM7.2 onto it, and I'm still only getting an EDGE connection. It shows a second connection under the "Network Operators" menu in the mobile settings, which, when I ran the stock ROM, was listed as "3G" but it always defaulted to the "2G" listing.
I live near a large city, and have gotten 3G on other carriers, and even 4G on a friends T-Mobile phone. I think I'm running the T-Mobile based SIM card, because the AT&T APN settings don't work with it, and the SIM came with the T-Mobile settings, it's even labeled in my APN as "Straight Talk T-Mobile" but I still only get EDGE.
I don't know much about straight talk, but is your Sim a 3G one? I had this issue a while back where i could only connect to 2G networks but then went to my carrier's store, told them the problem and they ported my contacts and number to a 3G sim and its worked ever since.
It may also be worth trying to get the APN settings from your service provider to see if this solves the problem.
I have an unlocked R800at (AT&T) that I am using on T-Mobile. Now where I live it shows that people have already reported getting HSPA+ on unlocked AT&T phones.
I have all the correct APN settings, however I always get 2G (Edge). But if i got to:
Wireless Networks
Mobile Network
And select search, for me it will bring up T-Mobile 2G and T-Mobile 3G as options. I select the 3G and it will connet and I will get HSPA+ (download of up to 7mbps, 3-5 up) for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, then it reverts back to 2G. Its not a huge deal for me as when I was on VZ I had edge like speeds, but to be honest if I can HSPA+ then i would like to have it but I cannot find a way to get it to stay on 3G. I have used 3G speed tweaks, trying different apn's... nothing. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I'm not entirely sure. I bought it on ebay, it's listed as a T-Mobile SIM card. It was a standard size, that the seller cut to micro. I have to put it in an adapter to use it with the phone.

hi, i have the same problem. r880i, it works well on gsm, totally unstable under wcdma..the "funny"thing is that i can't make calls nor text when it gets no signal(with the yellow triangle at top left),but i have data connection(i can install apps from store, browser youtube facebook works ecc) and i get mm#6 error sometimes(the phone in not stolen or whatever lock). all working well when set to gsm; if set to wcdma/gsm, or wcdma only it does the above mentioned behavior. i've relocked bootloader and repaired with seus and am currently on stock 2.3.4.. any fix or know issues?

[Q] Only can get H and H+ on T-mobile with US version of Find 7a

Was briefly excited on the arrival of my US version from oppostyle, but after hours of T-mobile tech support, a factory reset, APN attempts, still no LTE or proper 3g even on my Find 7, even though I live in a strong 3g/4g area...only (HSPA) H and H+. Can anyone help?
Thank you

Hmm, those match my settings and I am getting LTE. Dumb question, but have you restarted? I noticed my phone can get kinda quirky when switching between APN's, or if the data gets turned off by another app for some dumb reason or another.
I have a feeling there is a little more tweaking to do to the modem from Oppo...

Have you confirmed that you actually have LTE in your area?
Remember that for years, T-Mobile and AT&T called HSPA+ "4G"

I was uunclear about H+, have just been looking up info....Was on Verizon, a GSM newbee here
However, I am seeing very slow speeds on HSPA+ and HSP...not even seeing much of a difference in speeds between the two on my device.
between them. Averaging 0.6 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps down, and 0.8 mbps to 1.3 Mbps up, even though T-mobile tech support claims I have excellent 4g coverage in my area. Is this most likely hardware?
Also, on my roadtrip yesterday to Medford, I was capping off at around 10 Mbps on LTE at the most, which seems a ,ittle slow for LTE.

Sometimes your coverage can be solid but the backhaul (connection between towers and the Internet) can be awful. AT&T's local reps even told me that the local LTE isn't going to be particularly good for a while until they upgrade the backhaul to the towers.
Your HSPA+ speeds seem low, but that's in comparison with my AT&T experiences. I might try doing a speedtest comparison of LTE between my Nexus 5 and my Find 7a if I can.
I was reading the pocketnow review and they had trouble getting the phone to work on AT&T and T-mobile in the US. Does this phone even support T-Mobile LTE bands? In most areas T-Mobile has their LTE on the AWS band.

It actually does support them...I was told there was 4g here but there isn't as of yet

Mine does get all of these (4G, H, H+, etc.) but the problem is most of the time it can't even get data connection.
GPRS Setting for LTE works for Me
I was having problems connecting to data, calls no problem (OPPO FIND 7 USA).
Anyway, the automatic APN settings weren't right for me,I had to manually set the APN Protocol setting to IPV4 (wasn't set, reading Not Set) & it finally connected to 4G LTE.
Here's the strange part:
The APN Name (On OPPO FIND 7,USA Model) is T-Mobile GPRS NOT T-Mobile LTE.
If I changed the name,it wouldn't connect to data at all.
From best I can tell via web search, GPRS is synonymous with 2G,however,I have 4G LTE when this APN Name is used.
I've seen others having a hard time connecting to the network & seems this bug arose in the latest update.
Anyway,my settings are identical to those in the pics in the OP EXCEPT the very 1st line, the APN Name.
Where I'm at right now is notorious for a weak signal due to building/equipment interference, however,I'm picking up an excellent signal (-90 to -80dBm / 53asu) on LTE:13
Have you tried to turn on LTE 4G by going in the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* phone information and set preferred network as LTE only ?

Yes.
As it is now,w/the APN Name as T-Mobile GPRS & in the hidden menu, changing the preferred network to LTE has no effect,it stays connected to LTE & everything below that which is available in my area.
I just left it as UNKNOWN.
I tried changing the APN Name to T-Mobile LTE & it immediately disconnects, regardless of any other changes in the hidden menus.
As the phone senses/sets-up Auto APN,the only apparent thing that is omitted is the APN Protocol setting, which by default on my phone & SIM Card registered Not Set.
Changing that value to IPV4 (from Not Set) is what made the difference.
Perhaps this quirk has something to do with 2G in my area having been replaced/upgraded to 4G & 4G LTE & the phone doesn't sense the difference/recognize the difference but in name only, but, accepts the 4G/LTE Connection.
Not knowing all things network/etc..,this seems like a possible explanation.
All I know is that I have an excellent connection & fast speeds w/browsing/etc.....
I don't care what the phone calls it,or sees it as,success is success.
I've seen stranger things than this........
I have since replaced my SIM CARD & had no problems connecting to T-MOBILE's 4G LTE,no modification of the APN was needed.
However, this is while flashed to CYANOGENMOD 11 nightlies, have no idea if the previous issues would pop-up if running the stock COLOR 1.2.4i O/S.
I have had issues with T-mobile LTE. Played around with all the settings. Deleted the APN and created a new one, etc. It works now, but I didn't do anything special, it started working randomly a day or 2 later
Strangely enough I'm having the same problem getting 3g with Virgin (EE/TMobile) in the UK
It can take a while for LTE to provision after setting up the APN. Set it and let it try for about an hour.
APN
The APN setting should have no effect on this.
You have 2 different fields when you type *#*#4636#*#*, gsm service and gprs service. If gsm service does not show "in service", you can use any APN in the world and it still won't work.

LTE and 4G (ATT H810) issues

Anyone else on the ATT G4 having problems with LTE connectivity? In areas where I'd usually get 5 bars of LTE service, a majority of the time I get 2 or 3 bars of Edge service. Putting it into airplane mode and back out doesn't help, turning mobile data on and off doesn't help, and neither does removing the SIM card (and reseting the phone in the process). It seems to come and go whenever it wants to.
Sent from my LG-H810 using Tapatalk
All I can guess is, it's probably just the ATT network itself. They did some upgrades around here a while once Cspire started hyping their fiber optic network and I noticed on my older phone that in areas where I used to get 3G I was stuck getting edge. Even with my G4 I can park in perfect view of a known ATT tower and it'll hit 4G and within a minute be down to 3G - same with strength. Get 5 bars, don't move, no data, no call, and it'll drop down to no bars but still connected and bounce around, usually settling at 2 or 3. Even though ATT says they have full LTE out here I rarely actually see the LTE logo display in the status bar.
I've been using OpenSignal to try to map out coverage areas though, been pretty handy in finding towers and chasing stronger signal
Hi sir

Canadian G4 (H812) roaming in US. Extreme issues in over a dozen States.

So I'm on WIND with the LG G4 (H812). I have unlimited US roaming with them, and just got back from a roadtrip in the United States. I drove from Toronto, ON to Los Angeles, CA and back (in 2 weeks), and got to test the G4 in over a dozen States.
My data was excruciatingly slow. The icon at the top of my phone said I was connected to 3G (never HSPA+ or 4G), but it felt slower than 2G. I couldn't stream music, couldn't watch YouTube. Websites and the Facebook app barely loaded (and photos never worked). Facebook Messenger and Google Hangouts would send, but again, barely. Sending someone a photo using Messenger usually took 5-10 minutes.
This was the same regardless of what State I was in (over a dozen states).
When choosing what to connect to, it always gave me 4 options:
T-Mobile: WCDMA
AT&T: WCDMA
T-Mobile: GMS
AT&T: GMS
I always got the same speeds, no matter what I connected to.
On my old HTC One (M8) on WIND roaming in the US, I was always able to choose if I wanted to connect to 2G, 3G, or LTE. That's missing on my LG G4. The only options I'm given are:
GSM/WCDMA auto
WCDMA only
GMS only
I tried figuring out more information on my connection and bands. I went to the dailer and entered *#*#4636#*#*
A note would pop up that says "This application does not work on this device." and I couldn't see anything past that. That code doesn't work even now that I'm back in Canada.
I'm heading back to the States in a week, and unsure what to do. Is the problem WIND? All Canadian carriers? H812 Bands? Now that we have root, is there anything I can do to fix/unlock this without switching carriers?

Does your plan also include DATA roaming? 4G, LTE roaming? I think it would require adding an APN? Perhaps the roaming network towers can not authenticate your device, ect?
You can use the play store app LTE Discovery, it can show you what bands it's connecting/trying to connect.
Here compare your 812 to 811 810 bands. http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=8306&id2=8059&id3=8046

Yes, my plan includes data roaming. I've been with WIND for years, and used my HTC One (M8) on exactly the same plan while roaming in the US, and it worked properly. I reached out to WIND and their response was:
"I believe our roaming agreements cover 3G access while in the US."
Like I said, my M8 worked fine at 3G speeds in the past. It's specifically been the LG G4 that barely worked.
I took my Bell G4 to Italy this summer and got LTE in Rome, hspa otherwise. Worked great, just had to enter the apn myself (which I had to do on my Samsung phones travelling over the years).
Have not tried it in the US.
Im with Rogers and had no issues with roaming. I think it chooses AT&T in the states by default.
If I recall correctly WIND doesn't have the LTE band on the G4s. It's missing something. Although based on what youre describing it's like you're on EDGE (2G)
