Hi there,
Have a few fire sticks unrooted blocking updates via adb on firmwares 5.05 & 5.01 etc.
Should I upgrade these to the latest 5.2.1 and root with kingroot ?
The next update from amazon may not be rootable via kingroot and the moment will be lost.
What do you guys think. cheers

Hi,
I can confirm that Fire Stick is rootable on 5.2.1.0 update with Kingoroot App, I have 3 fire sticks with standard remote and bulky plug (all purchased last year before they started shipping with triangular plugs) all of which are rooted on 5.2.1.0 and software updates blocked with command line and also with OpenDNS.
However a Custom Recovery( / Pre-Rooted ROM has not yet been released, but is rumored that Rbox may be working on one

Kingoroot App fails at 90% for me. Error Code: 0x1DFFFF
Hi Connor,
I've been trying to root my Fire Stick 5.2.1.0 using ADBlink and KingoRoot.
I downloaded the latest version of ADBlink as well as the KingoRoot apk /zip to my windows 10 machine and tried sending the files to the stick. For some reason ADBlink keeps showing my device as offline. I've tried getting the files on the FireStick through ES Explorer with no success. The guide in the forums are great but none say exactly how to transfer the files on the stick. How best can I get the KingoRoot files on the stick so I can achieve the same results you have?

I bought a Fire from PC World yesterday, after several frustrating hours discovering that there's not much hope of it being rooted I had a look on Ebay, I've seen several rooted ones that seem to be quite good value, but they are in the states.
I have absolutely no intention of using my Amazon account on them, I only really want it for XBMC and all the rooted goodness and I'm sure there'll be a killer app that makes a rooted fire a very hot property indeed.
Question is, will a US fire TV work OK over here ?
Anyone know.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, it will work fine out of the box, apart from needing a US to UK plug adapter. Only things to be aware - you'll need to block updates so the box does not update to a firmware that removes root (which it will eventually try to do). And, if you want to update to a newer firmware manually and keep root, then you will need to use a custom recovery and a pre-rooted firmware update file. Manual updates is probably not vital though if you are only using it for XBMC.
Some useful guides over at aftvnews.com. First one may not be relevant if you're buying pre-rooted.
How to determine Fire TV Software Version and Rootability on First Setup Screen
How to block OTA update for Amazon Fire TV and keep Root Access
How to update a Rooted Amazon Fire TV to the Latest Version Without Losing Root
I want to unblock the updates so I can get Alexa. I am currently using Kodi and I am on software version 51.1.63_user_blahblah. I am not sure how that version number translates to the versions listed in the general forum (ie. 5.0.X format)
Will it wipe out Kodi and will I have to reload? Or will it leave it intact or will it ruin using Kodi.
Why would I want not want to upgrade? EDIT: It is a fire TV, not a stick.
Questions for you-
1.Is your Fire Tv rooted?
2. Fire Tv gen 1?
3.You want to update with root?
4.Or without root?
5.I take it you want your Fire Tv on OS5 software?
What ever firmware your on at the time being Kodi is not blocked or un-usable, on the AFTV2 you can root upto the latest firmware, there is gonna be a OS5 rooted rom (software) available soon from the Developer called rbox, he's just finished the AFTV2 version & he said he will make the OS5 version for the AFTV gen 1 user's soon. You don't have to have a rooted device to run Kodi.
Hope this helps If so press that thanks button

This is terrible, but I did it a long time ago. I don't think I am rooted. I think I just pushed kodi on it and then I ran something or ran some shell commands to stop updating. I know I should know!! LOL
I have gone through 3 computers and 6 hard drives to find out if I downloaded a utility to root. But I can't find anything but the download of the kodi .apk. So I am pretty sure I am not rooted.
I am not rooted. Didn't an update take out rooted units a while back? I remember reading that and installing kodi without root.
But I did something to block the updates.
1.Is your Fire Tv rooted? NO
2. Fire Tv gen 1? YES
3.You want to update with root? If I can avoid root I would like to. I play with enough devices. LOL
4.Or without root? YES
5.I take it you want your Fire Tv on OS5 software? Where are you getting the OS version? Mine shows as in my original post.
Now I just have to figure out what the hell I did to block updates. Off to the search window.......
Start here mate -
http://www.aftvnews.com/start/
Check the compatible root serial or update number on your Gen1, if you blocked updates You "should" have root still? If you have root I'd wait then update when rbox brings out the rom for the OS5 software which will update you to the latest firmware. Or you could get a free app on your phone that needs root (es explorer or file manager & try to use r/w in the file manager Or turn on root settings) sidelong it to your fire tv, if it fails you don't have root.

Hey guys,
we had a nice Fire TV 4K sale here in Germany and so I got that little box. However, now I am a bit confused and I hope that you could help me out.
Shall I update the box?
I learned that I need to root the Box in order to be able to connected my external HDD that is formated with NTFS. That is because originally the Fire TV does not support NTFS. I also learned that getting root is still possible with the newest two fireware versions but way more complicated because you need a A-to-A USB cable.
Of course I could block updates and just root the firmware that is currently installed. But I learned that Kodi is way better integrated into the interface of the newer firmwares. Is it possible to root the old firmware, do an OTA update and still have root on the newest firmware?
Since there are several firmwares out there. Is there any best firmware version that you recommend?

not sure if this will help.

You could go with either the latest 5.0.5.1 or with 5.0.5. I personally use 5.0.5 because I like using Firestarter to access all my sideloaded apps. Until Firestarter is officially updated by the programmer, you could use Firestopper which has been updated to work on 5.0.5.1.
I also wirelessly transfer movies to my external hard drive which is an NTFS drive so that I can have HD video. I have use the Kingroot method and the USB cable method. I'd also recommend aftvnews.com for guides as they are a great resource (especially for windows users). I also have guides for Mac users over at marksmods.com
How can I install the 5.0.5, I am still on the 5.0.3.1 and I guess the 5.0.5 would be better for me (used it on my aftv stick before) autoupdates will probably lead me to 5.0.5.1, which I try to avoid due to firestarter and sky go

http://www.aftvnews.com helped me a lot. You root with kingroot, install recovery, install prerooted 5.0.5.1. Just follow their instructions.

Thx for your reply, I checked that page. But what I really want is the following:
I am currently under 5.0.3.1 original and I want to have 5.0.5 (not 5.0.5.1), but without root! (SkyGo does not run on rooted devices, if it detects root).
I could perform OTA update --> would lead me to 5.0.5.1
What I really want is a way to push the official 5.0.5 to my aftv (best withoug kingrooting, due to the fact you need a full whipe, wich may also then give problems to my sky go accounts, which are limmited).
Is there some way to get an official rom, which I then can push via adb or put it on my aftv, that the aftv detects it and installs it ?
(I can still block the ota update after I am on 5.0.5)...
Bests,
shaDN
Is no one providing the original rom? However, in order to install it, you would need to root and install a recovery first anyways. Just instead of installing a prerooted rom you would install a not rooted one.
hmm, there must be a way to place an update somewhere on the aftv, that the aftv recognizes it as an official update and install it...
just installed 5.0.4, then 5.0.5 then unplugged lan and blocked updates
I love the new update routine
Trying to recover stick on damaged 5.0.5 from the horrible Kingroot + SuperSU-me brick debacle. The stick will finish booting up once rooted with the PC version of Kingoroot, but I must re-root every bootup. I think it downloaded 5.0.5.1 before I hid the update service, but would rather keep 5.0.5 for Firestarter home screen goodness.
The plan is to place the .bin in /cache and reboot to the built-in recovery in the hope that the stick can find and flash it, after which I can re-root and stop worrying about it until custom ROMs possibly arrive.
I may have to go back and search to see what triggers the update process as well, since there may be an explicit reference to the file name somewhere...
So if this method is sound, could someone post the stock 5.0.5 ROM for the AFTV Stick?
Thanks!

Have a try of my guide i put together, looks like its just what you need.
By the way, im currently looking for a way to change to SuperSu and get rid of Kingoroot, what versions of Su have you tried to replace with ? and which ways are you doing it ?
If we get every way and version tested out we might be able to find 1 that works.
As reinstalling/downgrading/upgrading is possible with my guide and i know if messed up su files through deleting/changing or any app altering su binaries the fire stick is still able to be recovered with Kingo roots windows tool on pc. As long as the os still had adb to connect to there seems to be no way of messing it up.

Thats an extensive collection of links, must of took you a while to put together.
Nice to know you reply to some folk with helpful answers, very useful to me THANKYOU.
As a community like this is here to help people and find sharings.
Big thumbs up from me.

I'm not messing with SU binaries until there's a working recovery for the Stick... I thought I was going to have to do a hardware flash and root for my "bricked" AFTV Stick, and it was an unexpected boon to be able to not only complete a boot with the PC version of Kingoroot, but have root as well. I can't be as confident that we'll always have adb at the boot stopping point for a rescue with the PC. I'm okay with the possible Chinese spyware for now.
My own brick was from the very common attempt to replace the KingRoot binaries with a "1-click" tool - SuperSU-Me. How many hundreds of people could recover their supposedly dead Stick using this method now? Even on my rooted FireOS3 AFTV1 I was never able to figure out which version of SuperSU would run and show the GUI for managing permissions...
Anyway, the Stick root allowed me to put 5.0.5 on there, flash, and immediately re-root with the Android Kingoroot, though I'm sure it would have worked again with the PC version. I had to uninstall about 3 pieces of crapware repeatedly, though - Mobo market, some File Manager, and a WiFi Analyzer. A bit of a pain, but oh, well.
sconnyuk, your guide compiled the missing pieces of info. I knew that we could force a stock update but could not recall where those instructions were, as well as the location of the ROM. Thanks for your guide, and also thanks to Elias for the massive collection of links. At least now we can control what version of FireOS we want to install now, and we know what root methods work on which versions. In any case, unless there is some "Zowie!" feature on the later ROMs, I'll stick with my basic streaming apps, SPMC, and Firestarter 3.2.3.
Thanks again for those chunky bricks of assistance!

Yes glad its worked out.
Im happy I found info on the downgrade/upgrade guide @AFTVnews.com for FireTV and glad that it was tested and working on the Stick with slight modification. Sure this will help other folk out with 'su bricked Sticks'
After all its all about sharing and helping people because if I seen the guide without someone slightly changing commands id of had no idea it would of been aplicable to the stick and would not of tried it as im not familiar with alot of adb commands.
Hello all,
Posting from freezing Britain here. Bought a new kindle fire 7" and have heard that installing custom software is would be wiser. I used to have an ainol 7" tablet from years ago so have some experience installing custom software. so the questions I have are:
*How do I find out what firmware I'm using? If I boot the tablet up is it going to instantaneously update once connected to the internet? Is there a way of stopping that before it happens?
* I've been reading that there is a cynagenmod and nexus firmwares available for the tablet. Do either of these need to be manually updated or is it possible to automatically update once they have been installed? What are the main differences?
I'm using this tablet for mostly reading and the odd games and some video streaming so not looking for anything to advanced.
Appreciate any advice that can be sent my way
Many thanks
Dr Cross
To be honest, I would have same question. Seems that those Kindle Fires (I have purchased two for the christmas gifts for the family in Poland) are 5th generation. Is there a way to flash them with something else as I have heard that once those would be delivered to Poland, my family won't even be able to install any apps on it as Amazon Store blocks polish IP addresses.
Anyway could provide some basic info if those tablets can be flashed with some other ROM to at least provide functionality for Gapps and polish language (dreaming...)
edit: ok... have to say that xda "search" wasn't helpful enough however when I have used google, I have found this thread which might come in handy:

I just did this last night from firmware 5.3.1 and it worked fine. You can find your version by going to Settings>About Tablet>Build Number I believe though now that my tablet is flashed with a new rom it does not look the same. From what I understand you cannot root 5.3.2 but can downgrade back to 5.3.1 and then root.
The easiest way to root is with RootJunky's supertool which was just upgraded a week ago and worked fine on my tablet. Download and instructions are here http://www.rootjunky.com/amazon-fire-5th-gen-supertool/ You can install the correct drivers, root the tablet, remove adds, and install flashify. Once you have flashify you can install whatever ROM you'd like. If I understand correctly you cannot install a custom recovery on 5.3.1
I am running the Nexus rom and it seems to be working great. Got a replacement for my stolen Nexus tablet for $33 on black friday. That's a deal!
Personally I have spend two days on this Kindle. What I have found has lead to a decision that I am returning those Kindle Fire tablets back to Amazon.
Originally purchased on Cyber Monday. Item which has arrived is 5th gen 5.3.1. Kindle. Once connected to Wifi it download 5.3.2 and waits for user action before updating (the OTA). I have used the supertool without luck. Even after 25 restarts, the Kingroot hasn't rooted the device to then be replaced by "su". From what I understand, if the Kindle originally had older bootloader and was upgraded to 5.3.1, than it still possible to root the device and install custom ROM. If the device is already on 5.3.1, based on todays tools and xda / reddit / youtube videos - rooting is not achievable as bootloader is different. Downgrading 5.3.1 WILL BRICK the device and of course shouldn't be performed!
If anyone has any other info - I am happy to hear about it, however at this moment I know that ADB and fastboot works fine, but Kingroot just hangs on 86% to than say that it wasn't able to root the device.

I was absolutely able to root my kindle from 5.3.1 yesterday. Brand new one straight from Amazon. Make sure you are using the very latest supertools which includes updated kingroot. Link is on my post above.
By the way I don't think kingroot ever said it had successfully rooted my tablet but I replaced with super su rebooted and I definitely have root.
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA-Developers mobile app
So the instructions in the supertool are misleading... As it does say to run kingroot over and over again to root and and then replace with SU. Yep. I am using the latest version. Seriously. 2 days of constant running of Kingroot with no vain. On 5th gen with 5.3.1. Never had any issues with any devices, even HTC with S-On, Nexus, Motorola Xoom, this Kindle Fire does give me a headache....
I will try today or tomorrow again. It is already after factory reset as it is waiting to be posted back (luckily Amazon told me that I have time until 2nd of February to return the tablets)
edit: Hmm... after factory reset rooting went fine without any issues.
I can only assume that once the device is "assigned" to Amazon Account, it is somehow changed.
So ... After factory reset and starting from a scratch - I do have root on amazon fire 7" 5th generation 5.3.1.
this isn't the 5th gen forum see

Hi all,
Thanks for your helps. Appears a friend of mine updated the OS to 5.3.2.1..... so I'm essentially stuck until there are further developments...
