You, sir are correct. Got mine from the same post. MMS crashes the app if you try to send a photo. Had to go into App Info and clear data to get it working again

Yeah, unfortunately, I concur. I also was planning for this to be a more unified client than it is. Instead of merging the hangouts and SMS threads it keeps them separate. I was expecting it to be like the iMessage client for iOS: Data message unless the recipient doesn't have the app or you have no data connection, SMS for the rest

Does it work with Google Voice?

Had the same problem. Once I installed all the other apps from the N5 from droid life the problem went away. May had something to do with the update of play services or launcher

Sorry I was wrong. It is still crashing on me. Didn't realize my buddy was using hangouts and not his default messenger.

Good for me so far. I installed all the new apps

Can't get notifications to work when I receive a text, crashes when I send an MMS.
I'll wait for the official one to hit the playstore.

Yeah, installed everything and it still crashes. Can't even get the new Google Now search to work, despite cycling languages as instructed. In a side note, the new keyboard is nice though.

For me, the notification alert sound and bubble pops up in the status bar, but I don't get a blinking notification light.

You're MMS works? Location sharing works? Receiving MMS works?
All the above leads to a crash for me. Tested the app on my wife's Galaxy S3 and everything works flawlessly. Ugh

Nope. Just tested this morning and MMS crashes it. Location seems fine for me though.

Come on folks, obviously the new Google apps are making use of the API's in 4.4 that aren't going to work properly on 4.3. This is the reason even something like Maps has different current versions floating around depending what you're running. There's going to be bugs just side loading this from a system image especially for a new app like hangouts that's now being deeply integrated into the system in 4.4.

I'm sure we're all quite aware of that. Thank you for pointing out blatantly obvious things.
No one here is saying "WTF Google why you no make teh hangoutz werk for mah Note before official release?! "
We're merely conversing, seeing if these problems are shared by all, or just some. So pump the brakes and cool your jets.
The simple fact it works
Flawlessly on my wife's Galaxy S3 and not my Note 3 makes me curious and eager to see if there are tweaks on our end that can nudge the software into a happy place.
That being said, constructive and helpful people who manage to find workarounds or anything helpful to get their MMS working without crashing the app, hop in and share!

I wonder what the problem really is because mms works perfectly fine on my note 2 with 4.2.1
I have updated the play services and hangouts ....won't work with this note 3 though

Havent been on XDA for a while, but I searched for an updated stock messaging app thats been edited to remove the contact photos from every line in a text conversation and havent found anything yet. Just wanted to see if anyone uses another stock version that has the quick reply popup and also sends/receives pictures or if there is another app from the Play store that doesnt eat battery.

I do remember using that at one point on my old smartphone. Are there any stock Android ones? Id really like to stay stock or find one tha looks like the iphone messaging app.

Its nice, but it doesnt do the quick reply pop up over the stock lockscreen. Always have to unlock and go to messages to read/reply. Kinda why I want to stick with a modified stock that just gets rid of the stupid contact photos.

Just started using Cloudmagic, very impressive!

That's funny.
I was just searching for something to replace yahoo mail, which I've been using for a while but is always buggy.
Last night I was messing around in the play store and came up with blue mail.
It couldn't be easier to set up and so far seems like a good alternative.
I'll give it a day or two and see if I still like it.

I use the stock email apk. It has swipe to delete and is pretty sharp looking. Loaded gone, just search for it in Google.
I would post where I got it but it was so long ago I just have it on my sd card and nice it from device to device.

MyMail is best for me

I tried Nine and its great but dont want to work with all my mail acounts cos its for exchange only, and I'm looking for something similar. Tried everything you posted but thats not the same

k9 mail is the only correct answer.

I'm using Nine for my Exchange (resp. active sync) E-Mails and the stock E-Mail App for my freemailer.
Tried CloudMagic but it was not the right app because I wasn't able to change the "sync time window" (last 14 days, last month, ...).

Your response prompted me to try it out. Really like what I'm seeing and will probably be using it for a while.

What is it that you don't like about Google hangouts? You can setup a Google voice number and text using that #, make wifi or data calls using for google voice number. Google hangouts does everything

Textra is the best app out there IMO. Send and receives pictures like a phone is supposed to (actually shows each picture as opposed to a Slideshow) has delay sending, and many other features. Fair warning though they are moving from a free app to paid. But totally worth it in every way.

Textra or Google Messenger I think are the two best.
I ended up sticking with Google Messenger because Textra seemed to have trouble with different DPI's which I found a little weird. I think it has a few extra features that make it better the GM if that's not an issue for you.

Agreed. Textra is awesome. I love using the "giphy" attachments.

Though I'm content with the stock messaging app, if I wasn't using it I'd be used Google Messenger. It's nice and clean and I actually like its simplicity

I tried evolvesms on my Note 4 which is running 5.01 but it seems to freeze on the conversation list page. Have you had this problem?

Textra probably is the best but there are a ton of bug reports everyday

T-Mobile G4 With Textra vs stock

Hey what's up everyone I am wondering who here uses Textra over the stock sms app? I love textra but find it hard to let go of stock sms app. Only issue I have is the Wi-Fi mms receive and send can't be done well or not at all in stock app

Screw textra. So many messaging apps out there, and that dev wants to charge you. Funny thing is that even after I paid for the app, I kept receiving ads.

Rocking Textra here and it's great. I think I bought it when it was on special for 99 cents.
He just added color theming, which seals the deal for me.

Textra was great until they added advertising. Now I'm using Google Messenger and it's amazing.
