Difficulties reverting to stock [Help Appreciated] - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First things first, this has been asked very often but no other thread helped me out.
So I'll be as precise as I can
I'm using an HTC One M8 Unlocked/International version (presumably, it's not carrier branded)
I unlocked my bootloader using the offical method from HTC Dev on Ubuntu (ADB/Fastboot sucks on Windows) After which I had TWRP and Cyanogenmod 13 Nightly running for a while. Now I would like to get it completely stock (besides the relocked flag) knowing that the ROM/Firmware has been signed by HTC.
What I did:
I could not find the stock images on HTC's website like Google provides them, shame HTC.. So at first I downloaded **some random** nandroid backup from this site. I also flashed the stock recovery that I recovered from a RUU.zip. After this I was able to receive an OTA update just fine. And I'm now currently running Android 6.0 Software number 6.12.401.4 (AFAIK that's the HBOOT version).
However, this is still a random backup from someone who might have potentially modified the system. In fact, it has been modified since the bootloader says *** Software status: modified ***
So, I would like to flash a RUU. HTC's website provides these in the form of an .exe which, are not signed and downloaded over HTTP. But that's OK since the phone verifies the signature of the zip. (I have S-ON and would like to keep it that way for this reason)
But the problem is, the RUU doesn't work. at first, it simply wouldn't run at all. because apparently you need to install a whole bunch of Visual c++ libraries as mentioned here.
After I installed all of these I managed to bring up the RUU wizard. (I did install HTC Sync Manager). I got the following error: "ERROR: 103 MODEL ID ERROR" "Please get the correct update utility and try again. To be clear, this is RUU_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_6.12.1540.4.exe from this website. It is my exact phone model. These are some screenshots from the utility.
Besides the RUU.exe I also tried some RUU.zips from random forums (that's ok, S-ON verifies the zip anyway) but they all fail the signature test. Like so,
sudo su
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip RUU.zip
...
FAILED (remote 12: signature verify fail)
So if anyone could help me get the official software back that would be greatly appreciated
P.S (why is this forum not using https? login credentials are sent in the clear now )

Most likely their is no .401 RUU
You will have to have S-OFF to flash the RUU you have

As long as the version number is higher or equal to what is currently installed it should work without S-OFF. Besides, I really don't like the idea of getting S-OFF. especially since it isn't necessary.

Nope you have .401 to change it to .1540 you need to change your mid and CID which requires s-off

AFAIK you can't use a generic fastboot to flash RUU.zip
It needs htc_fastboot .... as you said - (ADB/Fastboot sucks on Windows) - I don't know how to help you as I know nothing about Ubuntu
Just to give you ideas (for Windows) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
You can only install 6.12.401.4 or higher (but not available as there is none) x.xx.401.x
Using 6.12.1540.4 or any non-x.xx.401.x is totally wrong and won't work for you.

I'm actually using Windows but I run Ubuntu in virtualbox since installing adb is as simple as 'sudo apt install android-tools-adb', USB drivers work out of the box.

Hmm, okay I get it. I don't think it would make sense to get S-OFF and flash the xx.1540.4 since this version obviously wasn't meant for my device.
There's also this HTC_Europe_6.12.401.4_signed.zip I mentioned. I tried flashing that using fastboot which seems to work just fine regardless of the non htc_fastboot. But it doesn't pass the signature check. Again I could S-OFF but I'd rather not since a properly non-modified zip should pass the check anyway. Do you think it would work with htc_fastboot? I've tried htc_fastboot on windows but it'll complain about missing DLLs.
I also contacted my local htc live support chat, they told me the only way to get back to stock is to send it to repair service. Obviously, all they'll do is hook it up to a pc run the proper RUU and charge me $100 for it. So I asked if they could just sent me the RUU instead but that "isn't possible"

It failed signature check because of generic fastboot.
You must use htc_fastboot.
Just expand the link that I gave earlier, that's post #6, read post #4 for the drivers you need.
I can't link to you because I'm on mobile.
Or you can go to my thread linked in my signature, read the last two pages where I put a guide how to use ARUWizard to install RUU
The required drivers are linked on item 2.

Thanks, I read your post and downloaded htc_fastboot.exe and the RUU. htc_fastboot didn't work at first because it's missing AdbWinApi.dll but I solved that by installing minimal adb in C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal Adb and Fastboot\ and putting the htc_fastboot.exe inside that folder aswell as the RUU.zip (renamed).
Now, I get this.

[Q] Problem Downgrading Hboot on new DI Red

EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED, IT WAS MY FAULT, MY ZIP EXTRACTOR MALFUNCTIONED AND EXTRACTED FAULTY FASTBOOT. Sorry for the confusion
Hey guys!
I've been running into this problem for about 24 hours now, and through all of my searching I have found nothing. The problem has to do with downgrading hboot on a new Inc2 Red: I can't seem to get even temporary root from zergRush. The error is as follows:
Code:
writing 'zip'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)
I have tried on 3 OSes (Ubuntu, Windows Vista, Windows XP), done it both through the automated scripts and manually, and yet I get the exact same error. I have previous experience with rooting, though not through terminal (I do have much experience with terminal though).
zergRush claims to have worked, and
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
and
Code:
fastboot erase cache
both work.
So many thanks ahead of time.
Crap... so you have to downgrade the HBoot on a DInc2 Red? I just bought my wife one for Christmas and have yet to get my hands on it to work on rooting it.
Do you have a direct link to the downgrade instructions? Just want to know what I have to look forward to...

Sounds like the ROM.zip file may be corrupt. Have you tried redownloading the Downgrade Kit again and compared the MD5 checksum? Better yet why not download the RUU/ROM.zip directly from the Development section?

+1 the RUU file is definitely corrupted, if you check its MD5 file, it will confirm the error. Use the original link(s) to d/l again, check the MD5 and then flash it, your adb/fastboot should be working, just run adb from the command line and watch it go to work, took less than 10 minutes to update/downgrade. Then, power off & reboot into Recovery, check it as you should be good to go. The bootloader (HB.98) has been unlocked & downgraded to HB.97 - once you finish the above steps & get SU on the mSD card to run, you device will truely be rooted and ready for the optional custom ROMs of choice. Be sure to do a CWM Recovery along the way.

+1 please see log file from command prompt while running adb unlocking my Red DI2 with HB.98 downgrade, S-Off and root (in case you've missed it in another post or couldn't find it in the search)
If everything worked, the INFOsignature check will show no errors and run smoothly ....
Okay, after looking at your log, I think I can tell what's wrong:
You have
Code:
writing 'zip'... INFOadopting the signature contained in this image...
and mine never does that. Log file attached. Redownloading fastboot and trying again in the meantime.
Did anyone ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem.
EDIT: Actually, I do get the:
writing 'zip'...INFOadopting the signature contained in this image...
But I still get the:
FAILED <remote: 12 signature verify fail>
as well.
I am using the RUU from the downgrade package here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990
I'm really at a loss here. I've tried debugging this as best I can, but I'm not an Android developer per se. The vwhk-12102011-c.zip download matches the MD5. My device info is:
version: 0.5
version-bootloader: 0.98.0000
version-baseband: 1.09.01.1111
version-cpld: None
version-microp: None
version-main: 2.18.605.3
product: vivo_w
platform: HBOOT-7630
modelid: PG3210000
cidnum: VZW__001
security: on
build-mode: SHIP
boot-mode: RUU
hbootpreupdate: 12
All of which matches the android-info.txt file in the RUU. I've tried just flashing the hboot:
fastboot flash hboot hboot_0.97.0000_21273.nb0
but still get the error:
FAILED <remote: signature verify fail>

[TUT][Win/Mac/Linux] Back to stock using RUU and fastboot

I had to restore back to stock and I do not use windows. I was looking for threads but all of them needed windows. So, I am making a tutorial on how to go back to stock on Win/Mac/Linux.
Note - I used my netbook which runs arch linux to complete these steps. I have not tried any other os but it should work.
Requirements On all systems -
Usb drivers (HTC sync provides them on windows. They are preinstalled on linux/mac)
Fastboot
RUU for your device
On linux/mac you need wine. Get wine from your distro on linux and for mac you need to build it manually. Afaik there a few programmes to provide prebuilt wine on mac.
If you don't have wine, get the rom.zip for your RUU from someone here or a windows machine.
Acknowledgementsckpv5 for his tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705484)
mirGantrophy for his tutorial on how to do it on linux (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974272) Check his thread for pics and screenies.

CafeKampuchia for his tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706070)
Some other forum(forgot its name) for telling me about a command (fastboot oem rebootRUU)
Let's start
Download the ruu for your device from ruu.androidfiles.org (gsm one v = primoU, cdma = primoC and dual sim = primoDS)
Extract the rom.zip
Linux - Use elukas' script
Mac - get the rom.zip from somewhere. Sorry.
Windows - Run the ruu. Search for temporary folder and copy the rom.zip to somewhere safe.
Extract the rom.zip. We need to flash recovery and kernel(boot_signed.img) from this folder.
Reboot phone to bootloader. Connect it to your system. Make sure fastboot detects the phone.
For recovery
Code:
sudo fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img
For kernel
Code:
sudo fastboot flash boot boot_signed.img
Code:
sudo fastboot erase cache
Now we flash the Ruu
Code:
sudo fastboot oem rebootRUU
You may get an error related to hboot. Flash the zip again.
I hope it works for you. If you're on windows, you don't need to type sudo before fastboot.
This worked well, did it in litterally 4 minutes :good:
Is there anything I should add to it?
Umm getting the Ruu was a bit confusing, but i figured it out. Primo....
Thanks, I'll add that the gsm version is primou ,cdma is primoc and primods is dual sim.

The zip varies from device to device, so you need to download the RUU for your device and then extract the rom.zip from it.
Hi.. thank you for the guide..
actually I am still collecting information in case I need to flash back the stock rom,
but the thing that I want to ask is, do you know where I can get the stock kernel?
Is it also extracted from the windows ruu?
thanks in advance for your reply

Hey! I have a similar problem to with my HTC One S. I tried the above mentioned but it always get stuck in ''Sending'' When I try to flash recovery or RUU.zip file

I'm thinking that this RUU.zip isn't a zip file I can install via fastboot. And is a SD-card zip file. Which is a problem due to that I can't mount the SD card. And this is the only RUU matching my cellphone and there's no .exe files I found for it

[Q] Can't flash RUU firmware htc one m9

Hey guys, so I tried to flash RUU Firmware on my htc one m9. I downloaded the firmware, minimal adb flashboot, and htc sync manager. Problem is when I open command prompt via minimal adb flashboot and I type 'adb reboot downloader' it says:

Am I missing something here? What should I do?
any chance you run a virtual android, genymotion or something of the like? And I would like to think aside from the drivers for HTC, the sync manager is best tucked safely away in the garbage

if you boot to bootloader, should be up top there. from a booted phone just 'adb reboot bootloader' if it says s-on thats your problem. My guess is since you do not know your s-on/off you are probably s-on.

No it says:
*** Software status: Modified ***
*** Unlocked ***
*** S-ON ***
so this is your problem, S-ON is the last piece of security for you. Without S-OFF you are unable to flash RUU the way your are attempting.
There is an app, Sunshine. Cost 25$ I am pretty sure and that will get you s-off. or you can wait until your carrier pushes the OTA and do a "Back To Stock" method. Well the app is free, it runs a check and makes sure it can get s-off. then it wants money.

Good to know, any idea how to get the app for free? Kinda tight on budget here. Thanks!

Okay hold on, I remember when I rooted my phone it was S-Off. So to get it back to original factory version I need to S-on it?

No not at all, S-OFF makes it easier to get back to stock. If you were S-OFF at some point I am not too sure why the bootloader is reporting S-ON now. I am cheap and I revert to stock to get my OTAs to get the latest roms.. this is a huge pain. S-OFF is ideal once you have it you should keep it.
@kamocheng: Since I don't have much time at the moment I'm keeping it short:
1. Your zip is corrupted (look at the output). Re-download it and compare the MD5 checksums.
2. If you're s-on you need to be relocked for running RUUs.
3. You never mentioned your firmware version nor your CID so no one can verify whether you use the correct RUU.
4. There is no free version of sunshine since its a free app with in-app purchasement. But there is no need to s-off if you use the correct RUU.
Make sure htc sync isn't running on your computer.

Hello there, thanks for replying my thread
1. I'm sorry I dont quiet understand, do you mean zip in my PC or zip in my phone?
2. My firmware version is 1.32.617.30, how do i check my CID?
Correct me if I'm wrong but there are 2 options for me to return to original stock? First, S-off my phone and flash RUU firmware? Second, relocked my phone then run original stock? Since I didnt backup my original stock, I need to find untouched one?
Sorry this is my first android phone so if I'm total noob, I'm so sorry
What if i unrooted then relocked my phone, will i be able to take OTA then?

I'm talking about the zip you tried to flash in post 3. If you are using firefox as a browser I would recommend using an addon like DownThemAll! to verifiy the md5 checksum after the download has finished. Files can get corrupted during a download.
No, its one and the same way. You run the RUU either way. The only difference is that you can flash any firmware version with s-off and you don't need to relock while the versions you can flash with s-on have to match your current version (that means same version or newer) and your CID. Firmware versions with x.xx.617.xx are the developers editions if I'm not mistaking. (As far as I know AndroidRUU doesn't have any corresponding files. So I assume you downloaded it from clsA's personal collection of developer edition files since google didn't find any other sources for these files.) As said before redownload the file and compare the downloaded file's checksum with the one mentioned next to the download link (428582cef691c2e37053a0e19e9d738e). If they match the file should be flashable.
I prefer flashing RUUs using the sd-card method instead of fastboot so here are some instructions how I would continue:
Be sure to backup everything important like contacts, sms, etc. (I'm using MyPhoneExplorer for this step)
Get a SD-card that is not bigger than 32 gb and formatted to fat32 (I've always been using the formatting function of the m9 for this step).
Rename the RUU to "0PJAIMG.zip".
Copy that file into the root direction of your SD-card.
Relock your bootloader.
Put the card back into your phone.
Be sure that your phone is charged enough (more than 50 %).
Boot into download mode.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Wait some minutes.
Done.

Soft Bricked HTC One M9! Please help!

Dear all,
I recently unlocked bootloader, rooted and flashed CandySix ROM on my M9. Everything was fine until I stupidily relock the bootloader (using fastboot oem lock). Then the phone can not boot into system and recovery also.
I tried to re-unlock again using the same method (Unlock_code.bin) from HTCdev. The cmd said success, i press Yes on the phone, however after reboot the status stayed the same "Relock". I did like 20 times but it was the same.
I also tried to flash many RUUs that i found but no hopes (maybe i didnt find the right one).
Now the phone stuck at download mode and bootloader mode, can't do anthing else.
Can anyone helps me how to fix this or to find the right RUU for my phone please? Many thanks.

I think you need a new unlock token as when you relocked your bootloader it will need to generate a new one. Follow the unlock bootloader process from the beginning to see if you can unlock it again and go from there. Good luck.

You can't flash RUUs with fastboot anymore since the M9. They became too big and the normal fastboot isn't able to handle them anymore. Either you use the SD card method which is described in my sheet or you look for htc_fastboot.
As a sidenote: You are aware that RUUs are encrypted and therefore can't get opened the way you normally open archives, aren't you? Winrar isn't able to do so at all and 7-zip has to use "right-click > open > #". Nevertheless you won't have any benefit from opening it.

After doing some stuff i didn't remember, the phone is now Unlocked. I can be able to flash a TWRP 3.0.0 and flash a CandySix ROM. All the process was smooth. The phone can boot normally now. Thank you guys.
However, there is no Sense on CandySix ROM. I really want to upgrade to another ROM with Sense but i can't due to my current firmware. I dont know how to upgrade the firmware for that. I can't make my S-off using Sunshine also. Any suggestions where to start? Thanks.
Did you try the SD card method I described in my google sheet? Or did you download the needed htc_fastboot files if you prefer the command line? I had no problems with flashing the 2.10.710.5 RUU when I created my backups for the SKU 710.
Or did you try to use the TWRP backup guide in my sheet?
Otherwise if you're willing to pay around 20 bucks you could use llabtoofer's RUU service. Either google or use the link in my spreadsheet.

I'm not sure of the CID nor firmware version(i'm sure it was the latest 3.41.651.4.) iForgot to backup my device before rooting(stupid iKnow.) I've already found the RUU for 3.41.651.4 it's saved to my SD card. iCan still reach bootloader, recovery&download mode, should iJust enter recovery&flash the RUU? iAlso have S-ON. iWould like to relock the bootloader&start the root process anew. iUsed TWRP 3.0.2 as well as Super SU 2.76 during my first initial attempt. I've already tried to lock the device once but when iType adb devices into the command window no device is displayed.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Can someone help?

M8 bricked, cant flash new rom neither restore backup

Hey guys,
Recently I have bought used m8 with custom rom. Seller said he sells it because after trying to do factory reset (thinking it could restore to stock) he lost any gsm signal, only wifi worked. I had some experience with flashing sony mobiles and lg few years ago, so thought it would be easy to install stock rom and use device again. Googled a bit about flashing HTC devices, then downloaded rom, after that had some dificulties with win 8 and htc drivers, so tried to put rom into sd, it was too small. Somehow managed to put rom into device, tried to flash, had some errors, tried another roms, got another fails, changed my cid and mid, played with locked/relocked things, that didn't help either. Tried to restore a nandroid backup, even if it says restore was successful, after i choose reboot, it only boots me in bootloader. Now i cant access twrp, my pc recognises phone, but none of adb commands work.
I apologise if anyone got similar problem, but tried to look for explainations on my own, and found nothing, so this is my last hope to get it working.
Any help or info will be appreciated, I also am very interested in what you guys are doing, so i could even donate for people who can help alot.

A big mistake has been made, either by you, or the previous owner. As you indicated the previous owner lost GSM signal, I would guess that person may be the culprit.
Here's what I mean: Your M8 version is Verizon, indicated by the product name M8_WLV. I can see from the OS number (6.12.401.4) that installation of Euro firmware was attempted.
The Verizon version is somewhat unique, in that its designed for use on US Verizon carrier's CDMA network (in addition to GSM, HSPA, LTE) and therefore has its own partition layout, radio firmware, etc. Trying to flash any other version's firmware to this device will not work, and may result in a permanent radio brick. Essentially, only Verizon firmware or RUUs should only be installed to this device. Unlike most other M8 versions, you cannot convert the Verizon M8 to another version by changing the CID/MID (after s-off) and flashing another version RUU.
Indeed, the OS number in parenthesis indicates a problem with the firmware. And I'll venture to guess that this line is also in red font (which also indicated a firmware problem).
Your best (and really, only) option is to try the proper Verizon RUU. A lot of times, this will fix the firmware, and get the radio to work. Although there is a possibility that its a permanent radio brick (as we've seen a number of times). Try the 6.21.605.3 RUU from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/official-ruu1-55-605-2-t2883845
Another couple mistakes that I can see:
There was never a need to relock the bootloader for what you are doing, since the device is s-off. Its not needed to do this in order to flash firmware or RUU (the main reason to relock bootloader) as this requirement is bypassed by s-off. A relocked bootloader won't interfere with the RUU I recommended. But it would hamper trying to install TWRP custom recovery.
adb won't work unless you are booted to Android OS, or in TWRP. Since neither of those are working, it is normal and expected that adb command won't work. Fastboot command should work, while booting into bootloader-fastboot mode (and only that mode). While fastboot is related to adb, there are important conditions and differences.

If the latest RUU doesn't fix the radio signal, I suggest to install the lowest version 1.5x. as the lower version usually will fix the NV partition which related to radio and unbrick it. (This is what I read in VZW thread before)

Good to know, I wasn't aware.
I think the 1.5x files would be here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/development/ruu-m8vzw-4-4-3-s-off-onlynewest-t2873144
Edited my earlier post.
Your earlier link is good ... click 4.4.4 RUU zip link, it's 3.28.605.4 RUU
The only way to reset the partition to out of the box stock is to flash your carrier's 4.4.4 firmware and the stock recovery for you device. Reboot to recovery and select factory data reset and let it do it's thing. If you watch the reset log you will see it mention resetting the NV partition.

That's correct, you will need to change back to the Verizon CID and MID to run the RUUs, firmware. Sorry, I missed that in the details you provided.
Alternately, if you change to SuperCID (11111111) in most cases this will bypass the MID check (and save you some steps).
now got RUU mode with exclamation marks on the edges of screen..
changed cid to vzw__001, but now need to get to fastboot again, to change it to supercid and will try 6,0 ruu.exe 4,4,4ruu.exe and 6,0 .zip files i have downloaded

What are those you downloaded ? Which link ?
In my earlier post, I specifically suggested this one : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001604006
If in ruu.zip you downloaded has all those files, it means you need to extract the ruu.zip then run the ARUwizard.exe to install.

Do you have latest HTC USB drivers installed ? As explained in this guide - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
where it says - first you need this ?
Also try with USB2.0, if running it with ARUwizard.exe (that also explained in the same guide in the link at the lower part).
Or take only the rom.zip then
htc_fastboot flash zip rom.zip

I downloaded the 3.28.605.4 ruu.zip to see what's going on here .. it's a signed RUU, you're not supposed to extract it. No normal zip archiver can extract it properly.
Rename the whole as ruu.zip or rom.zip then htc_fastboot it after you put the device in RUU mode
fastboot oem reboot RUU
fastboot flash zip ruu.zip (or rom.zip if you renamed it rom.zip)
fastboot reboot-bootloader
also make sure your windows extension is not hidden so it won't actually become ruu.zip.zip where you will have unable to load ruu.zip error
The whole
