Outdoor visibility (max brightness)

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the Honor 8's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Screen brightness is great even in Auto mode, visibility is great

Definitely, anyone with this phone, would you be willing to share your comments about the visibility of the phone under harsh tattoine like sunlight?

Honor 8 display is just amazing, better than my old Samsung J5 and on par with many flagships.
Keep in mind that LTPS screens have advantage to other LCDs , due to the manufacturing process.
That means lower consumption and better sunlight visibility. I had phones with LTPS panels and they were all awesome!

Honestly I expected a little bit more. Don't get me wrong I can see the content however I feel that the brightness could be a bit more and the numbers (450-490 nit) says so. But overall it is better than most of its competition's

So much better than what i was used to, i could almost never see anything on my old phone (Acer Liquid E700) in the sunlight. Now i can read the screen just fine no matter what weather it is. Only thing that bothers me a little bit is that the auto brightness is a little to aggressive in dark environments, the screen gets to dark to my liking.

Outdoor visibility is good only when full brightness is turn on.. but still had some phones evan then it was not visible..

Despite not being the brightest on the spec sheet, it beats the S6 in the sun. (which was 600 nit or somewhere along those lines)
Simply, it is very good.

It could be better, I compared it with O+3 which has better visibility on sun.

The specs and the real world performance put the readability in sunlight squarely in the "average" category. It will work in a pinch, but it's not the best available. It's also not the worst, so just keep your expectations reserved for average and you wont be disappointed.

Many phones are worse..
At least that was my experiance ..
I had many phones..
My last nexus 6 motorola was so bad that 100% brightness did not help to see in the sun at all
And the Honor 8 is the lets say second best phone in the sun I had
Better I only had the Samusung A5 2016..
So I would say.. yes there are better phones.. but Honor 8 is good enough to see in the sun..
BUT, to see you MUST have 100% brightness and that one discharges battery realy realy fast

I do not use auto brightness
Couse I have noticed when I set
Lets say 50% auto brightness its a bit dimmed
Couse if I set manually 50% it is bit brighter
Did not tried it outside and with 100% auto or manual
Couse I have it always manual
Will test a bit more then give you final opinion for my case

I used it while high noon and no problems with visibility.

not the best or AMOLeD quality but still does very well. better than many out there. in normal condition brightness is sufficient, you may feel little uncomfortable in direct sunlight but we use it very less in such situations..so performs well and no complaint

Does the display suck this much?

Most people say that the oneplus 3's screen is just a piece of crap...I would have bought the axon 7 if its bootloader wasn't locked and it had a better camera. So I have the iPhone 5 and even though it's a 4-inch display it's sharp enough and you can't see any pixels,so how does the pentile screen holds up because the oneplus 3 is one hell of a phone

It's plenty sharp unless you want to use it for Virtual Reality. The OP3 actually has a higher pixel per inch count than the iPhone. The pentile matrix does make it a little less sharp, but not something you will notice in normal use. I had my Nexus 5 (2013) and OP3 side by side and I could see a difference, if I held the phone at 20 cm from my face. Anywhere further than that, not at all. Also, it uses less battery than e.g. 1440p displays, which is why the battery life on the OP3 is really good.
Finally, the sRGB mode is heaven for me. Almost perfect color calibration with amoled blacks. I'll take that trade-off for pentile everyday. And if you like high saturation, just turn sRGB off and you also get a white balance slider! The choice is yours.

Actually I do plan on using VR but it's not that big of a deal

Depends on how much you use it I'd say. A friend of mine got the S7 edge with a VR headset. He used it twice in the first week he got it. Now it's gathering dust somewhere... It's mostly still a gimmick. But if you're really into it, YouTube is increasing its VR content and some games can be found on the play store.

I care about everyday usage (being fast),normal media consumption (like watching videos or using Spotify) more than VR really and I really care about the camera

I have s7 edge and OP 3 both.. I don't feel OP 3 has bad display! it might not be as good as S7 edge.. but definitely it's not pathetic display. It's very good display for day to day usage..

The display on the OnePlus 3 is pretty awesome, far better than on my One M9 for example. It may not be the best on the market but it surely isn't bad and it is far from sucking, lol.

At medium or high brightness with sRGB mode the display is great. Look really closely and you can see that it isn't perfectly sharp, but it is nonetheless FHD and you shouldn't be looking at your phone with a viewing distance of 5 cm anyway. Normal viewing distances are fine.
The minimum brightness is a bit problematic: if you turn it down all the way the dark colours seem to become actual black, so it becomes harder to see things.
Calling the display trash is surely an overstatement. It's viewing angles, blacks, minimum/maximum brightness, colour accuracy, resolution and pixel density are good to excellent. It's definitely not the best display you can get, but it's far from being terrible.

The people that say the display sucks are people that don't have the phone. I have a nexus 6p and OP 3 and I couldn't tell a difference between the screen resolution of both. Not even when I'm playing game. 1080p is easily rectifiable compared to 720p, 2k is not that much from 1080p unless you're looking at small text from 3 inches.
The colors on the default mode are over saturated and are a bit over the top but majority of casual users like it more. The display on sRGB is one of the best displays on the market. It's so pleasing to the eyes, it's almost 100% accurate yet the blacks are deep. My nexus 6p has almost as good display on sRGB but it has started to suffer from screen burn because of navigation bar.

I have a OP3, LG G4, OPO and LG G3 that I can compare to.
Holding the phone at my normal reading distance or even slightly closer I cannot tell the difference in sharpness between the displays.
The biggest differences are colour saturation and black levels along with screen brightness. The LG G4 and G3 are very saturated and unnatural looking.
Opo with kcal calibration and op3 with sRGB look more neutral.
Min brightness on g3 is high and blacks On op3 is the best.

It's strange that all of you guys are saying that it's not a bad display while the whole forum is *****ing about it

What do you guys think about the zte axon 7?

I think its a phone made by a chinese manufacturer that has metal in its build.

Personally the display is more than satisfactory. 4.5/5.
Comparing with recent phones iPhone 6/OnePlus 2 and wife's current iPhone 6s.

Actually I would love to do a blindfold test with any naysayers. The screen is fantastic and probably more than anyone but a heavy VR user would need. Post #2 was absolutely correct in his description.

I have seen a review that I could actually see the pixels on oneplus 3 screen's on video,hope it's the camera he was recording with

Not at all, it's pretty good if you do some necessary tweaks. Personally, I'm using Sultan ROM with sRGB mode (Photography mode) and the following calibrations: Red 93%, Green 87%, Blue 100%, Saturation 6%, Intensity 8. It looks great, natural colors, slightly saturated so they don't look too washed, and AMOLED black. I'm quite happy, honestly.

So you recommend op3?
I have a g3. I don't want to give up ir blaster sd card or removable batteries. Plus glass screen protector with no issues. But night time use with that AMOLED is nice. I don't like how it doesn't have multiwindow nor one handed view like my g3.
Hopefully it gets nougat quickly. I'll see how the Pixel XL is but if it's $750+ I'm not paying double. The OP 3 is a beast. I'll only consider the Google phone if it's $600. Which it won't be so hopefully I get a OnePlus 3 without screen uniformity issue this time.

I have galaxy note5.. and I can't tell the deference side by side by sharpness.. I can only notice some changing in color. But as I use sRGB on OP3 and basic on GN5 I cant tell any difference!!
Oh maybe the dpi.. but i change it on my op3 to be like gn5...

5t screen resolution compared to today's flagships. Is it good enough?

Hello everyone.
In considering the Oneplus 5t as a replacement to my good old Samsung note 4, especially for the price compared to today's flashships.
One of the main factors when I chose any device is the screen quality. I understand the 5t scores really high in this sector, but I'm worried about the resolution and screen DPI.
My note 4 and all today's flagships have higher resolutions, and I'm wondering if anyone has compared the 5t screen with other devices and can notice any real difference in daily life, mainly while browsing pictures were pixels become more evident.
I considered the Note 8 and LG v30, but I really can't stand those curved edges, and I don't need a pen since I don't use the one on my note 4.

I upgraded from the Note 4 to the OP3T and then the 5T. My decision was based on easy root and Dev community. I cannot notice a significant difference in screen resolution (if you look at TV resolution guides you'll see that you need to be insanely close to the screen to notice on something as small as a phone). OnePlus allows you to manually adjust the DPI to suit your preference so you can have tiny icons and such. I love this phone compared to my Note 4. Way snappier and no slow down from TW.
I personally have never thought "this screen would be better if it was 4k". But Samsung's infinity display is definitely a better display if that is your only concern.

Since you had a note 4, how would you compare the screen with the 5t one? Would you consider the 5t an upgrade in terms of quality, color accuracy, brightness, watching angles etc?
Also, is the 5t camera overall an upgrade compared to the note 4?

Full disclosure I didn't use the camera on the Note 4 all that much, but looking through the pictures that I took with it the OP5T seems to take much better pictures. The portrait mode is also great to have.
As for the screen, I personally don't notice a difference in quality. Small text still has clearly defined edges that I can see. I don't use my phone for VR so I can't comment there. I really like the colors on the display and didn't notice any significant color difference between the two, but this is subjective. It is plenty bright and I think that might be an upgrade from the Note 4 as I seem to recall having to manually adjust the brightness to actually see it whenever I stepped outside and still having some issues. Viewing angles are also great with this phone. I don't have any color shift unless it's a pretty extreme angle.
The one thing the screen has going for it is it's size and lack of bezels, which I really love. Other than that I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a significant difference between the two unless you looked really closely or had special equipment. So not really an upgrade in screen quality, but definitely not a downgrade. The rest of the phone is a huge improvement though. Way faster to use and a much better update schedule.

Thanks . Such a reply is much better than any review on the net, as you gave real life experience.
I'm really satisfied with the Note 4 display, and if this isn't a downgrade, that's grade. Being with much less bezels and overall lighter is a huge plus too.

I'm a Note 4 to 3T and now 5T convert.
Updates aren't an issue with OP, they're doing a fine job now. If I had to complain, and I don't need to, it's the security updates are always behind.
I don't have the issues that a lot of others are having. I also don't have a lot of crap apps on my phone. 100% stock with dark theme, BT always on, brightness between half and 3/4 and I'm averaging 1.25 day of battery and 8hrs of SOT.
In regards to the screen, it's made by Samsung. I'm surprised at how easy it was to adjust to. Choose your preset or customize it and run with it.
Camera, hmm, it's good but not as good as the Note 4 in low lighting. Once you get to know how to use the camera, other pics come out quite nicely. Most of the pics I take are of circuit boards and car parts.
Audio, unfortunately I'm hearing impaired so I try not to comment on it. I will say that it seems like every other update the volume output changes either up or down. I notice this when I'm connected via BT to my cars radio.
I can't walk and chew gum so I'm not a VR user.

Hellz yeah it is. It's excellent and it's even better than some QHD displays out there like the G6.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the screen resolution, it's fine, honest. On the plus side, the HD+ screen means the GPU has less pixels to push around.
My best advice would be to compare it side by side with other devices in the flesh if you can, that way you can see if you like the colour tone of the screen. I've spent several years using a succession of cheap devices bought directly from China. All of them have had LCD screens rather than AMOLED. I'm finding it very hard to get used to the screen because it looks so yellow whenever looking at anything white. If you want accurate colours (reds and blues accurate) you need to have the screen set to sRGB or DCI P3 and with either of those options whites look very yellow indeed. I've compared my phone to two other 5ts now and they have all been the same. I think I'm gradually getting used to it, but I've had to set the screen colour to 'custom' and as cool possible to get anywhere close to acceptable whites. The downside of this is it comes with very oversaturated reds. When comparing the 5t to the panels on the S8+ and Note, they seem whiter and generally a better panel.
Having said all this, I'm happy with the device in most ways and the resolution is basically fine for me.

I actually find that the Samsung panels that I've been looking at (S8/Note 8/S7) have been generally the same as the 5T as far as whites go (very good), but the S8/Note 8 tends to have reddish whites and the S7 had a greenish white. The 5T was much better.

That's interesting, I wonder if the type of lighting makes a difference? In the shop where I compared them my eyes honestly thought the Samsungs had more pop AND better colours. Their whites were closest to the LCD screen on my old Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I also felt that the middle range Samsung's had all the same 'issues' as my 5t, i.e. a bit yellow when displaying white backgrounds, and very over saturated reds that look almost scarlet or florescent. I guess it must come down to what each person is used to and how they perceive colour? I'm gradually getting used to the 5t and I really like how it looks when playing a game. Doom 3 looks really lovely on it

I think there are a lot of factors going on. Lighting, personal perception, etc.

I went from the original Oneplus One to the Nexus 6P and now to the 5T. At first, I was also a bit worried that the display on the 5T would be less sharp compared to the 6P, due to the difference in DPI. But when I got the 5T, I could hardly tell the difference. The display was just as good and even brighter and vivid.

Although OP5T screen is beautiful perfect, But if screen is still a concern, LG V30 is a way to go.
I guess only difference is resolution...Pixel counts.

Uhm, no.
The V30 has one of the worst screens of all current (flagship) phones.
The one in the 5T is way, way better.

In direct comparison with the S8 I can tell the difference. But its not to great. Colors and everything else are really similar. Unless you use it for VR its very ok in my opinion.

Can confirm. Had a pixel 2 xl for a few weeks (same LG POLED panel). Brightness uniformity is horrible and whites are very grainy. Don't miss anything about that display.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.

Ya for the price this is a really good phone, the display is the only con but u won't notice it untill u compare it with a full hd panel this aside what u get is a amoled panel and a indisplay finger print scanner

It's a good display knowing it has samoled display , but yes the pixels are visible

Some people are really blowing things out of proportions. I bet they don't even have this phone / didn't use it for long. They just read some BS on the internet about how awful that display was & now they are crying foul over it on this forum
I'm coming from Mi 8 SE, which has a HDR10 capable super amoled panel. Obviously, it will be foolish to compare Mi A3's panel with that phone but I must say, A3's display rather surprised me. The colors might be over saturated for some people but honestly, it looks quite good. And no, I really couldn't see the pixels. Well, the pixels are kinda visible, specially when you're trying to read an article with white fonts against a dark background Still, the AMOLED panel is good.
(Hey Xiaomi, this doesn't mean you should start this ridiculous trend of putting low res screens on your mid-range devices Especially the Mi A series, which happens to have a huge fan following. Stupid move)

Mine has yellowish tone too. It's not unbearable or anything, but the display is on the warmer side. I know some people like it cool, but I don't mind a display which appears warm. I find it easier on my eyes, especially at night.

Agreed with you on soothing warm tones.
I guess I will keep it like that

Display is good and clear. but you can see the pixels with naked ayes if you're close enough...

Night light is also not usable, even on the lowest setting it is too much red/warm. I just want to make the display like 5-10% warmer, and not go into red berserk mode.

If you go into developer mode, does picture color mode or simulated color space help?

I got the phone for my wife, was playing with it for a few hours and these are my findings and comparison with Mi A1:
- A3 has warm tones, A1 is very cool (haven't noticed it before the comparison)
- night light is fine at minimum intensity or just a tad above, definitely not a red berserk. A1 has strong blue hue even with night light (haven't noticed it before).
- A3 has clearly visible pixels, it's a huge downgrade compared to A1 side by side. BUT, after a while, I did not really mind the pixelation of A3 that much (humans can get used probably to anything).
- without my correction glasses, I strongly prefer A3 display over A1. Something how it's being blurred by my eyes makes AMOLED more comfortable.
- colors are nicer/punchier on A3 (confirmed by my wife too)
- brightness seems to be quite low, for the same perceived level I need to configure A3 ~70%, A1 ~50%. I can't imagine using minimum brightness in real life (the same goes with A1), it's barely visible. Need to compare both phones in strong light / outdoors.
- PWM does not flicker at any brightness level
Overall, I would definitely prefer 1080 AMOLED over 720 AMOLED. 720 AMOLED vs. 1080 LCD is a tough call. I'm still debating myself whether I should switch from A1 to A3. I really like the form factor, responsiveness, absolutely clear audio output, 128gb storage, file based encryption and the feel of A3. Non existing "Mi A3 PRO" (Mi CC9) would be a better choice, though bigger form factor is definitely less comfortable for one hand usage (the main reason why I want to replace A1). Decisions, decisions..

Dude, I had even "worse" display few years back (Huawei P1) - pentile AMOLED with 256ppi (vs. 286ppi on A3). I was using it for about 2 years and I did not go blind. Don't generalize your personal health issues, there are thousands of A3 phones in use, yet I found only ONE health complaint. If it was that serious as you claim, some people couldn't pass the opportunity for a nice law suite. It should be a no-brainer to prove it.

You are throwing around numbers and comparing. I am giving first hand experience. Again, I have to repeat myself, there is something very wrong with this display, maybe the combination pwm+pentile+low resolution+something else? that is causing massive eye strain.

Question Device Photos (Best Buy)

Using an S21U daily, the phones felt light in the hand even being tethered. Personally, the flat screen and matte rails of the non pro felt and looked the best. Played with some features, but the phones were resetting into demo mode frequently. Similar shots between the Pro & S21U in Best Buy... I preferred the Pixel. Colors on both panels were great in the Adaptive mode, but looks like they lack the NITS vs the S21U. Pro did get quite warm with 10+ mins of mundane use. Best Pixel to date, by miles. Wanting a much brighter screen for outdoor use is the only reason I'm keeping tabs on the new pixels.
I'm coming from a pixel 3 XL and auto brightness just isn't quite enough under the bright Texas sun.
Thanks for sharing your experience vs the Samsung.
