MIUI or Vanilla Android?

Dear all,
This is my first Xiaomi phone and my first experience with MIUI. I love MIUI so far so good, I think it's a very fast ROM and has awesome features, such as full screen feature where there is no navigation buttons at the bottom of screen and you just swipe from the edges of screen.
However,
I see that many people don't like MIUI and most of the kernels don't support MIUI. Why is this? Is vanilla android ROMs, such as Pixel Experience, AOSIP, RR, etc better than MIUI? How? Do they have full screen feature like the one on MIUI? I've never used any ROM other than MIUI so far, so I don't know. And I would want to know if there are any advantages before trying them out blindly.
Also, could you please advise which kernels can be used with MIUI? Serious answers please.

I really prefer Pixel Experience like ROM. You know, Xiaomi add their ads in their system software, you will not like that. Xiaomi do not control ads contents, it's a third party company who decides the content of ads. So, your kid may see sexual ads while using your phone.

Miui is good but now a days xiamoi is becoming greedy you know adds too many and bugs .that's all nothing else to hate

Yes, edge gestures are there in RR. I use them personally.

How is the battery life and performance on custom roms like Pixel Experience etc? I regularly game on my device so battery life is important.

I am not playing game. I usually use my phone for news, facebook, reading novels. I played game several days ago, it may last around 5 hours for a light game. Normally, without game, it can last 8 hours on screeen.

With MIUI 10 my battery life goes bad... Before i had about 3 days, now i only get 2 days... I want to try another rom now. Maybe pixel experince rom.
Can someone help me a little bit here, too?
My questions:
1.)
Is battery life nearly the same like with miui - will i get my 3 days (with light use) back?
2.)
Is full gesture control (no bottom back,menu,homescreen buttons) working in pixel experience rom too?
3.)
Is face unlock working in pixel experiece rom too? Is it the same like in miui or is this another face unlock app from google? Which one is better/faster?
4.)
Is camera working in pixel experince rom out of the box? Is camera as good as miui camera? Is all working in pixel camera?
5.)
Is there any big bug in a non-miui rom? Some missing (big) features?

Oh man you should move to custom rom if you play games. In MIUI I can't play AOV 60 fps, can't run PUBG on HDR setting, it was a pain since our phone's specification actually can do it. You can see other phone with exactly same spec can run it right (Asus Max Pro M1).
I don't expect to get those features when changing to custom ROM since I just wanted to upgrade to Android Pie, but when I run the games unexpectedly those features enabled by default. So satisfying ?

It's simple. If MIUI is enough for you, just use it. If you wanna MIUI features, like gestures or dual apps, just use MIUI. It's simple

Question Is stock MIUI good or is it better to install a custom ROM?

Hi all, I'm coming from a Pixel phone. This is my first Xiaomi phone with MIUI on it. I just got the phone today and I've been playing around with it. So far the MIUI experience is not too bad. It's not too heavy handed and feels relatively stock. And it comes with some useful apps like a decent clock, weather app, voice recorder etc. so it seems alright and I don't mind it much.
What's your opinion of it? Do you like stock MIUI or do you prefer an AOSP based ROM? And also I like to take a lot of pictures with my phone. So is the camera better on the stock MIUI software or is the camera just as good or even better on an AOSP ROM?

In my opinion, if you like MIUI, you should go with a custom MIUI based ROM like xiaomi.eu or else. But you can still try others ROMs that you may like.
The other custom ROMs don't have stock camera (for the moment), but Gcam is available in many versions, many users thinks it is better than stock camera app, if you are coming from a pixel you might be more familiar with that (and other pixel like ROMs).
Always here if you need more information !

This is just my opinion but I'd rather stick pins in my arms than use Miui. There are so many ROMS for this device and they are all pretty stable and with Gcam they are amazing. In my personal opinion GCam is better than the stock cam and takes better photos especially when you want to zoom in.
My personal favorite ROMS based on stability and features are ArrowOS, crDroid and Syberia. I'm just not a fan of Miui and their annoying prompts when you try to do anything like change permissions for an app and their plethora of bugs. It reminds me of EMUI but worse.

You have a week until you can unlock your bootloader, so try MIUI for a week and decide for yourself. I would recommend to debloat Miui first. I am counting final hours, before which I can unlock..

So true those 10 seconds of waiting for many changes become incredibly annoying vrey fast.
Arrow OS is really fast booting and incredibly smooth interface, to bad in the customisation department is a little lacking

What's the best rom for gaming in your opinion? I have the stable xiaomi.eu 12.6 but i don't know if there are others better than this one. Thanks in advance!

the same here for me....in eu miui fast and stable for games...any good ather rom ?

My advice - use MIUI EU stable ROM first and see if it suits you - if not, then explore AOSP ROMS

AOSP always, but it's nice to try MIUI first! It's improving. Specially when in some month it will be updated to MIUI 13, and our F3 will be one of the firsts MIUI's devices to do it. So I would do what people said, but I'm completing it:
- Ask (yes, you have to ask first) to unlock your bootloader. You'll have to wait for a week before unlocking it.
- Try MIUI relaxed for a week. Take some screenshots about battery... and try to feel how smooth and performant can be
- (7 days later asking unlocking bootloader) Unlock bootloader. It will erase everything. Take advantage of it to change to some AOSP Rom, like AICP, ProtonAOSP, ArrowOS (never tryied), or whatever. You have dozens.
- Compare and decide some days later. You can always come to stock. And in the while, in some months you will have MIUI 13, so yeap

Depends on your taste! If you like MIUI over Vanilla Android, you can flash Xiaomi.eu Custom ROM for the best MIUI experience.
I dislike MIUI, but I use Xiaomi.eu Custom ROM, because the Vanilla Android ROMs I've tried don't have Dolby Atmos (or a good version implemented) and lackluster Camera-App.

The sound is so good on eu that I just don't wanna leave it, btw there's this bouncy scroll sometimes on eu, I'm on latest eu beta, same for you?

Yup, also Beta! Also, when trying out AOSP ROMs I noticed the vibration felt really cheap, and I think Xiaomi has done vibration motor calibration on MIUI, to make the vibration motor feel as good as it does. If you set a Custom Vibration Time in Gboard (MIUI & AOSP), it also feels weird and cheap.

Yup, but i think the Overscroll effect only happens in the Settings unfortunately. I tried Moto Dolby and didn't like it at all, it didn't sound anywhere near Xiaomi's Dolby Atmos?

My experience so far is:
* Yes, MIUI is very nice and the new UI (e.g. control center) is very nice as well
* MIUI has a lot of bloatware but you can remove them all
* Battery life is fine as well (getting 6h ~ 6h30 of SoT without gaming)
* The Xiaomi.EU ROM is as good as the stock one but with less bloatware and some nice additional features, still 100% compatible (so both camera and Dolby Atmos speakers quality are preserved)
ArrowOS is very nice and smooth but not really much faster to stock anyway. Camera quality is worse, speakers quality is way worse due to the lack of Dolby Atmos support. There are a few bugs here and there and globally you aren't getting the stability guarantees of the stock ROM as with all custom ROMs.
So, finally:
* If you want maximum stability to avoid all problems, or if you are fine with MIUI's UI, stick with the stock ROM
* If you want good stability and 100% compatibility, go for the Xiaomi.EU ROM
* If you want stock-like experience, ArrowOS or crDroid are both very good (although I've had problems with crDroid, but it's my personal experience)

moto dolby is downright bad ive tried all aosp that have it, tbh theres no effect its just sound and hurting sound no effects whatsoever.
miui dolby is really nice and i love it it gives a sourround feel
if only it could be ported to aosp

I love it if it would get ported into an AOSP ROM!
Also small tip with Dolby Atmos: You can enable Video Toolbox in your favourite Music app (Spotify, YouTube Music, whatever) and customise the sound of the Dolby Atmos Video-Preset. This way you can adjust the surround sound of your music. ^^

ive turned video toolbox on but how do i toggle it? i mean how can i open it in app?
if it'd be ported it'd be dope,

Question AOSP vs MIUI based ROMs

I tried searching this forum before asking, so forgive me if someone has already asked this before. I want opinions from users who tried both AOSP and MIUI based ROMs. I wanted to know which is more stable/feature rich and better. If you hate or are strongly against MIUI and hence will never use it that is fine, but I am more interested in those who don't have such a negative opinion of MIUI and I want an honest and fair comparison of the two types of ROMs.
I am currently on ArrowOS and it is pretty decent. However, it does have some minor bugs and inconveniences. The main one is that the default Google phone app has issues with incoming calls - I cannot hear the other person on incoming calls until I activate speakerphone. Also, I believe some features are missing in AOSP based ROMs such as Dolby audio, and some other niche features. Also, it is quite unfortunate that AOSP based ROMs cannot take full advantage of the cameras and are limited to 12 Megapixels only and some camera features are missing.
Now, I wanted to know if I can have full camera functionality in MIUI based ROMs? Does it also have the same kind of incoming call bug? And lastly, can I still install GCam on MIUI based ROMs and get the best of both worlds, that is use MIUI camera app and GCam as well? Your advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

This answer probably is going to sound harsh, but it is truth (at least for me hahaha).
I've tried literally every custom rom from here (and also a few ones that are baked outside XDA, i.e. HOS, the Android 12 build, etc) and yeah, not even one custom rom gets near the stability, compatibility and battery life of MIUI.
I don't like MIUI at all, but the battery consuption and stability is the best to be used as a daily driver. I hate when I want to do something on my daily basis and then I fail to do it because I'm using a custom rom, for example: bluetooth issues when connecting the phone with my car, video calls having audio issues, low volume on calls, etc) or just taking a photo.
MIUI covers all those little points, and at the end of the day, is the only rom that fullfill all my needs. I personally use eu (the weekly release), as it is just an optimized version of MIUI, but yeah, I still dream on the day that a custom rom gets to the same level of stability and compatibility as MIUI. I TRULY love pixel like roms, but I just don't wan't to sacrifice stability or just simply downgrade the cam quality just for that.
And if I really need to chose a custom rom, I'll pick Lineage, it's the best custom rom out there, has awesome battery life, extra features and the rom/mantainers are not just going to stop developing the weekly nightlies just because they get tired of it. On second place there is HOS, the only issue with HOS that I had is that the thermals of my phone gets real high when I play games (this does not happen with other roms).

Thanks for the reply! Yes I read your post on that other thread as well and it was a very good post. I feel that your observation is accurate. MIUI based ROMs seem to give us the most stability and feature set. Unfortunately AOSP ROMs have things lacking that MIUI ROMs have by default like the Camera. I think this is making me inclined to install a MIUI ROM I guess.

A quick follow up question: Can I install GCam on the Xiaomi.eu ROM? The only feature I want from GCam is the "photosphere" mode.

Overall, I'd also rather have Vanilla Android.
But I do like Xiaomi's added permission-manager, which restricts Apps further, Dolby Atmos (Much better than Moto Dolby, and Razer Dolby in AOSP ROMs), and the MIUI Camera App.
Yes, you can use Gcam on MIUI as well. The ports have gotten good.

i've used most of custom roms and just like the user above, I switched back to miui (weekly xiaomi eu). I found some annoying issues in every single rom, like random reboots while using LTE, and high idle batery drain.
Aosp roms are more clean and smooth, but they lack of the stability of Miui and some features like the MEMC, dobly, game mode, etc.
So, in the mean time I will stay on miui

I'm also on Xiaomi.eu Weekly. I've seen your question here on XDA about the random reboots, but I don't know a solution to your problem.
I've only stayed on a single AOSP ROM for max. 2 days before switching to other AOSP ROMs, but I only experienced 1 crash during Android Setup, I think.
I only used 4G/LTE internet, no calls as far as I know.

I tried many aosp custom roms and went back to stock Miui. High end phones have extra features like Dolby atmos which improves sound quality a lot and no custom rom sounds as good as Miui, and some very useful built in features like timing AOD which is very convenient,... I feel like Aosp custom roms would be better for mid range phone like Redmi notes, Poco F3 is powerful enough to be smooth even in Miui

I just switched to MiuiMiX, most things are great. But there are some things that are missing, and I hope you can help me .
First, the most important thing, navigation gestures with third party launcher. Is there an efficient way to make gestures works with third party launcher (I use Niagara Launcher, and it worked great with AOSP ROMs), I tried many things, but none worked or in a bad way, annoying to use the stock launcher while I paid for Niagara launcher which is perfect for me. The other problems aren't really caused by MIUI, or I just need some adaptation, or else...
Otherwise, what do you recommend for MIUI based ROM ?

I don't care a whole lot for the Xiaomi Miui based roms to clunky to bloated and slow compared to lets say Arrow is clean fast and battery life is much better , even Xiaomi.eu version is bloated in my opinion, themes , miui music app and video and the the built in Avast scanner all crap! but to each his own .

That is a fair point but overall I still find MIUI to be the better ROM than AOSP ROMs.
I agree that MIUI has more bloat and a lot more pre-installed system apps. But I don't think it is slow at all. It is absolutely snappy and just as fast as AOSP ROMs. Battery life, I personally do not see any significant difference between the two. In fact I probably experienced more idle battery drain on ArrowOS and sometimes the phone was unable to go into deep sleep mode on ArrowOS.
But the main reason I prefer MIUI ROMs compared to AOSP even though my previous phone was a Pixel 2 and I really appreciate clean stock Android is because a lot of features are lost when I go to AOSP ROMs that I cannot justify it! Why use a ROM that takes away a lot of the features that came with the phone? I paid for all those features and I would like to use them.
For me camera is very very important and I was undewhelmed by GCam. I really wanted the proper functionality of stock MIUI camera. And the good news is I can install GCam on MIUI ROMs too to get the best of both worlds!
For me, the following is a small selection of features that are better on MIUI ROMs than AOSP:
Better Camera; there is no sound issue with incoming calls (was a problem on ArrowOS), better screen recorder features with floating controls, better screen casting functionality, useful built-in apps like voice recorder, notes, compass, weather app, also the calculator app and clock app are better and more feature rich than Google's equivalents
You can force dark mode on apps, which is really useful for those apps that don't have dark mode or make dark mode a paid feature
Dolby Atmos, MEMC, floating windows, one handed mode and other useful features not in AOSP ROMs
I personally prefer the layout of the notification panel in MIUI more than Stock Android. In fact, I liked Samsung One UI's implementation of the notification panel more than Google's stock implementation. Brightness slider is at the bottom to be more easily accessible, the settings icon is on the top so I do not have to expand the quick toggles to get that icon unlike in Stock Android.
And honestly, once I have the phone all setup it looks great! Nowadays Android skins are relatively mild unlike the heavy handed UIs like TouchWiz and HTC Sense of the past. Even the latest MIUI looks fairly mild and after everything is setup there is not a lot of difference compared to Stock Android in appearance. In fact it looks a bit better than the very spartan Stock Android look. Even the Settings app is nicer with the bigger icons and fonts. So I am quite happy with the Xiaomi.eu ROM.
I hope this comparison of MIUI ROM vs AOSP interface is useful to others if they want to get an overview of what you get from MIUI ROMs compared to AOSP.

For me, the following is a small selection of features that are better on MIUI ROMs than AOSP:
Better Camera; there is no sound issue with incoming calls (was a problem on ArrowOS), better screen recorder features with floating controls, better screen casting functionality, useful built-in apps like voice recorder, notes, compass, weather app, also the calculator app and clock app are better and more feature rich than Google's equivalents
You can force dark mode on apps, which is really useful for those apps that don't have dark mode or make dark mode a paid feature
Dolby Atmos, MEMC, floating windows, one handed mode and other useful features not in AOSP ROMs
I personally prefer the layout of the notification panel in MIUI more than Stock Android. In fact, I liked Samsung One UI's implementation of the notification panel more than Google's stock implementation. Brightness slider is at the bottom to be more easily accessible, the settings icon is on the top so I do not have to expand the quick toggles to get that icon unlike in Stock Android.
And honestly, once I have the phone all setup it looks great! Nowadays Android skins are relatively mild unlike the heavy handed UIs like TouchWiz and HTC Sense of the past. Even the latest MIUI looks fairly mild and after everything is setup there is not a lot of difference compared to Stock Android in appearance. In fact it looks a bit better than the very spartan Stock Android look. Even the Settings app is a nicer with the bigger icons and fonts. So I am quite happy with the Xiaomi.eu ROM.

Nice, I'm have some lags with MiuiMiX... And MIUI is still very limited with some things... It's a choice to make AOSP and MIUI have advantages and disadvantages..

I agree that MIUI has more bloat and a lot more pre-installed system apps. But I don't think it is slow at all. It is absolutely snappy and just as fast as AOSP ROMs. Battery life, I personally do not see any significant difference between the two. some very valid points my friend but you got to ask yourself do the positives outweigh the negatives ? I will agree miss the stock camera and Atmos but dam everything else just works better..I just can't deal with the bloat of the stock rom.

I have hidden away the bloat completely. I don't see any major negatives with this ROM so far.

In my opinion, if you want to save some time then don't think about flashing custom ROM in the initial days of purchase. Just stick with preloaded stock ROM so that you can enjoy the fancy features which lure you into buying that phone. Flashing is an addiction after some time and there are tons of ROMs which get regular updates that will keep busy in flashing ROMs. I think the thumb rule should be to wait until 1 year (typical warranty period and end of regular update cycle from OEM) before flashing any custom ROMs. After that, you will definitely enjoy ASOP ROMs.

I always go away from miui due to security and privacy concerns + the bloated applications and the ads. I have found ARROWOS and HOS to be working the best on PocoF3, keep in mind miui has higher antutu scores because it has a specific profile for bench-marking called "nolimit"

Many Roms have semi automated updates. Arrow for example has 1 button to check for an update and then pops another to install the available update. That's it, everything is done in the background, you can use your phone as usual. Restart whenever it's convenient for you and you are done. Just like in stock MIUI

Is it straightforward to install updates for ArrowOS with Magisk root? Or will it block updates or something?

Custom ROM users, which ROM are you running?
I've noticed that there are a few ROMs that don't list their features and people are just supposed to know which ROM will suit them, unless they want to keep reinstalling new ones and testing them all out.
All (almost all?) of the ROMs are based on AOSP, so what sets them apart from one another? What makes a ROM worth choosing over the others, for you? What features do you like of your ROM? Let me know!

What's unique or different about them vs. stock? Any particular reasons you like either one?

I prefer the AOSP type roms both very snappy

Running crDroid, which is taking after the Pixel interface. Very stable, customizable, good battery management without throttling in games (at least for the ones I use). Definitely becoming my daily driver.
The only thing I'm missing is the original camera app from Oxygen OS/Color OS 12.

I recommend having MSM tool already set up and drivers installed before flashing custom Rom, although following the instructions, you shouldn't run into any issue. This will make it a lot easier in my opinion if something goes wrong.
I'm personally using Nameless at the moment, and is pretty nice. It's different then oxygen os 11, but pretty good. It has an ota update in settings like stock.
There are some really nice options at the moment, and am very thankful for the devs time for each one of these Roms.
Like previously mentioned, there is not a Oxygen camera port yet that I'm aware of with all the features like stock, but maybe soon. Wireless charging is slow, and a few minor bugs(like really minor). Overall very very nice. Thanks for reading, posting, and I hope this could be of some use. crDroid too. I like it more than stock C44. The one and only ROM, which installation is flawless. Any other ROM is plagued with 'Cannot read' issue.

Now I run "Nameless"
For me is the BEST ROM out now for OP9 Pro ( I've tried all others ROM's to )
Most stable

I use Visible cellular service. The only A12 rom that has been compatible Visible is crDroid. I don't know what is done differently with it. I've tried them all and it's the only one that works for me.

Look for CAF telephony when choosing a rom for your phone. I used to have Verizon with the same issue. Derpfest might work for you too

Those that have chosen a ROM such as Nameless or crDroid, the reason often given is stability. Is this the main reason, or are there unique features for each ROM like there are between different phone manufacturers?

crDroid: You have some customisation features in a dedicated menu, the wireless charge is fully operational, battery optimization is great, everything has been working as intended so far. I feel at home using it.

I tried all of these ROMs but Derpfest and Paranoid are the only rom I didn't experience frequent stuttering. I prefer Derpfest because of its completeness and customizability.

And I don't use the Google call screening, so I can't answer on that.

Tried almost all of them, they're all a mess imo.
Nameless was the most stable and had all the basic needed features like choosing the display resolution, min/max Hz.
Stag reboots and gives crashdump too many times
Crdroid is extremely laggy, has a lot of features but lacks basic ones, huge battery drain
PE/Lineage too many stock apps freeze, stuttering, doesn't feel smooth
Derp was ok-ish

I checked on their official branches websites... They are not available for any phones of the OnePlus 9 series.

Need a custom ROM -- help me

I hate the stock rom of A2 Lite. Too slow and the background apps keep reloading. I need a custom rom, I already asked on other threads and no one seems to care. I'm a noob, never flashed so I don't have experience and the support is terrible around here. Please tell me which custom rom works fast and stable as of now. I need Gapps and Instagram to work, banking app, google maps. Also no bugs with incoming calls, audio or fingerprint sensor please. I don't care if it's A11 or A12, it just needs to have fast performance, battery life and background optimization. And most of all Instagram, since all the mods seem unable to run it decently. I ask for your help, thanks in advance.

Try Derpfest 12. Daily driving it currently, and still pretty good. Reminds you tho that this 5-year-old phone is already kinda slow in general because of the old hardware, so it aint gonna fix it like magic.

Not great, not terrible. I tried a lot of ROMs (especially Android 11 and 12) and safe to say I can't tell the difference between them. So-so, if you ask me.

I've long gone with stock ROM so I can't compare it. I've heard that Android 12 have more optimization compared to 11 though.
But again back to my point: even though it might fix some of your ROM bugs and hiccups - it's still not magic. Mi A2 Lite is a 5-years-old budget phone. I still got some slowdowns and crashes, no matter what ROM I use.
I mainly change my ROM because I need some features that only available in Android 11 (or 12).

If you need stability you can go back to the original android 8 rom where this phone was fantastic
