So as you may or may not know, at&t doesn't allow their customers to hotspot from their phones without paying some fee or something. My g3 is rooted and I've been on fulmics ROM for a long time. The weird thing is that I can use the hotspot feature without restriction. How does all the hotspot stuff work? My home WiFi sucks and basically I have the best WiFi in the house because of my phone (and I use it for my PC)
My brother has an at&t g4 and I was wondering if he would be able to use his hotspot without restriction just because he's on a custom ROM. Any insight on this?

New GN user here coming off a Thuderbolt, and Nexus One before that. I'm trying to understand the workings of the on-board Wifi/USB Tether function. I've heard from some friends that it is monitored by VZW and will tack a tethering plan onto your bill if you activate it.
Is this true? Do I need to avoid the built in WiFi feature?
Thanks
I can tell you that you will NOT have to add a tethering program with WiFi Tether, it's a root app.
I've had Consumer Cellular for some years now, and more recently with an iPhone 4. It's had 3G speed and the hotspot on iOS 7.1.1 worked great, no jailbreak needed.
I just purchased an LG G3 as Consumer Cellular advised that it too would work, fully with 4G/LTE and with the hotspot. Well, all things work except the hotspot. CC now says AT&T has not provisioned them to run hotspots on the G# (yet).
Does anyone know of a workaround of get the hotspot running. I've tried PDANet separately, PDANet with FoxFi, and FoxFi alone.
Anyone know of a way to get the hotspot going without rooting?
I had a htc inspire 4g with CM9 and i noticed when i used the widget for mobile hotspot, i could do so without my carrier seeing it. When i went into the wireless settings and turned it on from there though, i would get a notice from the carrier. So somehow they were not able to see the tethering when i was using the widget on my homescreen. What would allow this to happen? Is it a modified kernal from the rom that allowed me to hotspot without the carrier seeing? I only ask because i have no upgraded to the m8 and i was hoping this could be done.
Since you mention the Inspire, I assume you are talking AT&T. They monitor network side, and no amount of tinkering AFAIK will hide tethering from them. Its simply a matter of how much they wish to enforce the tethering policy. Nobody around here knows for sure what parameters they use to decide whether you get the warning or not. But the amount of tethered data has been speculated (tether a lot, and you might get busted) although some here have mentioned they tether quite a bit, and never have been caught.
I've been tethering off/on on the M8 direct from the built-in HTC app with no issues. Same thing on my old One X (EVITA). On both, its just been occasional and small amounts of data; typically while travelling and WiFi is either not available, or too slow, and just need to download/upload work email or other documents to my laptop. Just used a non-AT&T based ROM which do not contain the restriction that you need to have a tethering plan in order to turn on WiFi hotspot.
Anyone here know how I can get free WiFi tethering without t mobile knowing. I only have 5gb of hot spot and am almost at my limit.
You're better off posting this question or searching for your T-Mobile D851 variant answers here.
As for that question in particular, there's no mod or fix to allow it that you can do on the phone (some work but knock out LTE), but there is an app called Wifi Tether Router, that works with the G3 (I use it successfully).
You can try FoxFi and all, but their app prices are more than double the above app.
The G3 is unique in that it doesn't allow your APN to be changed and adding one breaks the LTE and data connections with T-Mobile.
For one of the threads on the tethering use with T-Mobile's G3, check out here.
So I have been rooted and flashing for a little over a year now. I have heard that you can get free wifi and teathering on rooted devices but Idk if it is true or how. If anyone has any information on this plz advise
Well, wifi is always free (on your phone anyways). You just need to connect to wifi access point (ergo home router). Rooting has no effect on this. Years back, most carriers wouldn't let you tether on their plans. Now most allow thethering... if that's the case, again no need for root. If you are on a carrier that doesn't allow tethering (is there any), you just need to root your phone, and download a tethering app from the play store. Bingo Bango.
