How to go back to STOCK [551ML] - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been asking all over reddit and XDA, but no one seems to have a complete answer.
PLEASE.
How do I go back to stock from CM13?
Can I download the full ROM from Asus support and flash it with TWRP?
Is there more to this that I'm missing?
Do I need to use Asus Flash Tool?
If so, where do I get the flash tool from?
Help would be greatly greatly appreciated. THANKS!

flash the RAW file = http://forum.xda-developers.com/zen...a-ze551ml-official-raw-firmware-file-t3347496

download the latest firmware, before you install it using TWRP you must edit the updater-script in \META-INF\com\google\android , how to edit the updater script? follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/how-to-flash-ota-rom-twrp-t3209545 then you can install it using TWRP

Is there anyway to do it without a PC?

Unfortunately no. You need a computer to run fastboot while it is plugged into your device.

if your bootloader is unlocked, your rooted, and you have a recovery, (TWRP) or CWM) why not just flash a 4.4.2 rom from the Nexus 7 LTE thread? theres a few to choose from. Just do a full wipe in recovery, flash the downloaded rom, and boom....4.4.2. easy like wezzy bro!

I know how to flash droid. but how can i flash system.img.
i didnt find this file on the update
and what should i write in cmd to update system.img?
please help me out.
If you unzip the full ROM package (not OTA) then you'll find those files, like system.img/boot.img etc. At least they're there in the pre-rooted system zips - https://mega.co.nz/#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw

[Q] How do you make a system.img from firmware zip

Problem: We can download the firmware from Asus in the form of a zip file. We can use adb sideload <firmware>.zip to sideload the firmware.
Request: How can I flash that firmware using fastboot? It looks like I need to use a .img file. How do I convert that .zip file to a .img file?
Reason: I found a situation where using the sideload method didn't seem to work correctly. I ended up having to get a pre-rooted .img and flashed that, but I want a "virgin" img file. Thanks.
If you install zip from ASUS download site (not OTA!) then you will get virgin stock ROM after update.
This kind of update (around 1GB) erases system partition before install, so it doesn't matter how hard you've modified previous firmware. SU, Xposed, etc - everything will be automatically wiped before install.
The question is how do you convert .zip to .img?

tools to build img from zip (only full ROM, not OTA) published there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/orig-development/rom-pre-root-img-t3079590
But keep in mind, it's for advanced users. I would say, for developers.
Thanks. I asked that nice feller if he was able to do such a thing as I'm not a dev or even well-versed in Linux.
What firmware zip are you looking to flash?
flashing system.img was just temporary solution, as the only way to root or modify firmware before bootloader unlock.
With unlocked bootloader and custom recovery you can modify update.zip as much as you want and then install it.
Even if you don't want to unlock the bootloader, then you can use temporary custom recovery and install any modified zip.
So, in general you don't need to create system.img anymore. Just use zip to install whatever you want.

^ That's exactly why I was asking. I can put together whatever zip if they know what they want flashed. :good:

Hi,
can you make system.img, pre-rooted or not, like @shakalaca?
I tried but I haven't enough knowledge to do, though I tried to install a ghitub, etc, etc.
I would like to download the system.img fro last firmware, Z00A-WW.2.19.40.22.
Thanks

Remove TWRP

Hello,
I flashed a stock rom for my zenfone 2 Z00A without any problem but because I have installed TWRP on my phone to test out cm12.1 and cm13 I can no longer do the OTA as they come in. I have searched through the forums and have tried to edit the OTA file as described but it always errors and won't install. I did a backup when I first installed TWRP, if I use that recovery file will it bring back my phone to stock or will I still have TWRP? If i will is there a way to remove TWRP and go back to the stock recovery so I can install the OTA's the normal way?
Thank you,
David
use fastboot to install the stock recovery

Or edit ota to be compatible with TWRP. It's a 30 second procedure.
Thank you, after searching I finally found on asus's own blog a post that had the link to the proper recovery.IMG file. Thank you both for the help. David

Hi David. Can you supply the link to the stock rom that you used and the recovery image please?Did you flash anything else besides these two?
Hello,
What I did was;
1) download the latest full firmware from this site http://www.asus-znfone.com/2016/01/full-firmware-zenfone-2-ze551ml-V2.20.40.160.html and installed it using twrp as I would any custom rom.
2) After I went through all the set up I was alerted to a system update. Before I did the update I replaced TWRP with the restore.img from this link
https://mega.nz/#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw!Z1N1EbKa using fastboot flash recovery recovery.img command.
3) After rebooting it is possible to do all the OTA updates.
Hope this helps. David Waldie

Question on twrp-flashing MIUI

Refer to this link - http://en.miui.com/thread-650046-1-1.html
Looking forward to flash this rom. The uploader tells us to use miflash to flash this .zip file.
Wanted to learn if it was safe to try installing this using TWRP and re-flash twrp and supersu afterwards, assuming that MIFlash will send the phone back to stock recovery and unroot.
Thanks

Simple ans. Try it yourself.
Safe to assume no risk of hard brick ?
There is always some risk.
What happen. ??? Did you flash it ??
Most system apps crash flashed by TWRP, the safest method would be to use Miflash tool and play around after TWRP install
