Recently, I've been getting annoyed with using my Kenu Airframe/Samsung Car Mount having to keep slipping on and off buttons or pushing my mount aside to slip in my phone.
So, I've been reading about the magnetic feature in order to activate the Car Mode/Desktop Mode on our Moto X. So I attempted to build a Magnetic Car Mount this weekend.
I realized that the Moto X itself had a metal band that would activate the Car Mode, however it wasn't strong enough to hold with my Magnet, so I had to place metal plate into a case and put the phone in, which that worked flawlessly. However, the metal plate bulged everywhere so the phone wasn't nice to hold anymore.
Luckily, my dad is a welder, and I worked on molding the metal plate with him, and decided I disliked my Diztronic Frost Case (On the side note, I liked the Matte Black Best). So, I decided to cut a piece out of my Diztronic case that fit with my metal plate. So now the plate curved with the case!
I inserted the metal plate into the cut out, glued it in place, and my roughly build case with a metal plate works like a charm with my Magnetic Mount setup with my Kenu Airframe. I gotta say it's one of the nicest things not to have to fiddle with anything and just take your phone off with a quick snap. This all cost me about $5 + $25 (Which is the Airframe). I'm ordering a new case and Mountek Metal Plating to reduce the thickness hoping that I won't have to cut an insert, but we'll see in the following days. I'll update it when I receive the plates.
I went autocrossing with my car, phone mounted my magnetic mount and at speeds and curves of 60-70 MPH, this thing stuck like glue!
Very pleased overall. Hopefully some of you guys will steer clear from the Griffin Dock for our phones and custom build your own mount

Here a few, sorry they are definitely blurry. Fairly tired for the night, tried to get a quick snaps in for an idea. Can't wait when I get my kit together to make everything look professional.
The Kenu can turn 360 degrees to fit whatever direction you'd like the magnet/a device to face. It's held on your air vent.

One more question. Any adverse effects from the magnet on the builtin compass or Navi? I've seen other places were people had issues with the magnet setups on those functions. Just wanted to see your thoughts.

I use a digital speedometer/Navigation day to day, haven't had any negative affects that I've seen yet. Speedometer/GPS Speed is right on my Digital Odometer's value, so I can't say I have any issues yet. Let me know if you have any other questions! Plus the location of my metal plate in the pictures taken, I am still able to do NFC!
Just got my parts in today for thinner pieces of metal, integrated it into a few of my cases. Plus, I made a new magnet. Quite fun!

I have been using magnetic mounts since my OG Droid. It is nice to see Moto reverted back to magnetic activation of dock mode instead of their smartdocks. I have noticed Moto has switched the polarity of the magnet's activation of car/desk dock modes from the OG Droid. I have an RND dock at home that I glued a magnet to. It automatically activates Daydream when docked. My next project is modifying the RND dock to include HDMI out and USB OTG capability.
Good evening!
I'm in need of some suggestions.
I'd like to get a mount to put my phone in but I'm kind of out of ideas..
Here's where I'm at:
-I don't want a window mount. I've had one fall off and explode my phone before.
-I don't have a CD player so I can't use a CD slot mount.
-A cup holder mount wouldn't work well in a 04 Aveo's cup holder.
-A lighter mount wouldn't work because the cup holder is on top of it.
Otherwise, I have no idea where to mount my phone!
Any ideas/suggestions?
I bought a Kenu Airframe for my current phone (iPhone 5. Waiting for my OPO!). It's a mount that goes onto your air vent. The phone doesn't slip or move at all. I got it on sale. There's an Airframe+ for 5.5 inch screens. I haven't tried the Airframe+, but I suspect it works the same.
Can you let me know if the OPO fits in the original Airframe? People were reporting it working with a Galaxy S4 with a case so it might be close. The vents in my car are vertical, though, so I wonder if it would slip off...

Can confirm, the OPO fits in the original Airframe. Using it with mine, works great.
You can rotate the rubber teeth 360º so it can be used with any vent setup (vertical/horizontal/rotating vents)

I have but when all is said and done, having to buy a clip then a mount, it seems to be restrictively expensive....
I got my OPO today. Here's some pictures of it in the mount. It cannot fit in the mount with a case on. I tried it with the Diztronic.

I thought this also, but with my HTC One, and now my OPO I wouldn't go anywhere else but Brodit Proclips...they are perfect.
OPO has to use a universal clip, but even that fits than 2-3 other ones I've tried for the OPO.
If you have the cash, give it a go.

I got my Airframe the other day and can confirm that it works just fine with the OPO and my vertical vents.
I have to make sure the direction of the vent is all the way up or it pushes the vent fin out of alignment (requiring me to take the dash apart to fix it!)
It's a little wobbly for my taste but it's better than the phone sitting on the seat next to me!
Thank you guys for the suggestion.

Has anyone found a car mount/dock that has a built in charger and/or audio out? It's kind of a pain to have to hook up the charge cord and audio cord every time I want to put the phone in my car mount. My old Samsung G2 mount was like that. Just plug your charge cord into the mount, as well as your audio cord, then when you slipped the phone in the cradle, it would slide into the usb, start charging and have an audio out signal.
used an airframe for my nexus 5, i didnt like it, due to how it was positioned in my honda civic. it was always diagonal facing away from me.
i guess it depends on the car u have. ima try iOttie

Its magnetic so I was wondering if people thought our Nexus 5 would work with it without the metal plate they supply. Seeing as the Nexus 5 has magnets in it's back I would think the only question is if the magnets used are attracted to the ones in the Nexus 5 and the placement of the magnets. I may get one to try out but I wanted to see people's thoughts anyway.
Well as far as I am informed and seen, inside your nexus 5 are metal discs not magnets, the magnets comes in the original nexus 5 wireless charger. Hope this make it more clear, and I think they made it a bit vague so you would get it then they would simply tells you to get their magmatic cover !!!

I wasn't sure if inside the Nexus 5 are magnets or, as you say, metal disks. I know my old Palm Pre had magnets in the back of the phone for it's TouchStone charger. I actually have two of those. And the Nexus 5 actually connects with that really well. Almost like it was made for it. If these docks are similar to what the TouchStone charger is as far as magnet placement, it should work really well without that metal plate they give you. But the plate does come with it to use with a phone case just in case. So I may just put down the 10 bucks or so and see how it goes.
Cool let me know what turns out, I may kick one too off ebay
I have this one in my car http://www.amazon.com/InfiniApps-Smartphones-Cradle-less-Quick-snap-technology/dp/B00DPMNNUO/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1427845784&sr=8-38&keywords=magnetic+car+mount
It works very well, and the phone stays locked in place. It attaches to the 4 metal plates in the back cover of the Nexus 5 meant for the official Qi charger. You can't use a case though, or the magnets won't be strong enough to hold. If you do use a case (thin TPU or thin hard case only) then you will need the metal plate insert for it to work. But even still, the phone sticks way better without a case. It sticks best in vertical position, if you do landscape it needs to be centered perfectly or it will start to twist back to vertical over big bumps, it won't come off, but it will turn.
I use an nGroove Snap (http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Magnetic-Smartphones-Tablets/dp/B00HMDYH2U) and it works just fine even without the metal plate.

Good to know that these do in fact work without those metal plates. I thought they'd might but thanks for confirming it. I don't use a case so it should be perfect for me. I'll definitely be getting one now.
Made my own car charger. Too bad my Spigen case is too thick, so can't use it. Or I just have to risk breaking my phone by not using the case..... Dilemma...
I use kenu airframe + google Nexus qi charger = perfect solution.
I ended up buying this one and it works perfectly.

Nope. It works as is. And it works nicely too. If the next Nexus doesn't have magnets, I'm going to be sad.
I have another mount, I believe it's called "iMagnet" which is almost identical. After using it for the past year with my nexus 5, I have some gripes about it. It's not an incredibly solid grip, which means every bump is going to make your phone start rotating one way or the other. I like to place my phone in landscape mode but since it's in landscape mode, the phone will twist on the mount until it's touching the dash. I'll periodically move the phone back to the center of the mount while I'm driving which probably isn't safe. Ive used my phone with cases, without cases, with dbrand skins, without. The official Google "bumper" and my spigen neo hybrid are both too thick for the mount to have a good hold, so it really slides all over the place. Using a skin, doesn't affect it too much though. If I were to get another car mount I wouldn't get one of these. It's not horrible, but it just gets annoying.

I have one, and I love it. I've got one of the slim Spigen cases and I put one of the metal plates between the phone and the case. I had to play with the position to make sure I could still use NFC, Qi charging, and GPS worked fine.

I just received it in the mail, and the build quality seems pretty good. I just had neck surgery the other day, so I won't be able to use it for at least a few weeks. I can't wait to try it out!
Can anyone recommend a good car mount?
I just bought some cheesy magnetic thing from Amazon. Will be returning ASAP. Ideally, I think I'm looking for something that can clip into either the air vents or on the dash of my car. I realized there probably aren't many pixel specific accessories made yet, but maybe someone has had good success with a different model for an earlier phone?
Anyway just wondering what you all were planning on using.
I've been using a good magnetic mount for the CD slot in my car since the Nexus 5 days. I like the Koomus brand of them from Amazon.

I've had the third generation iOttie car mount for about a year, and it is excellent. It doesn't have a vent clip, but its suction cup mount is very sturdy. It even comes with a little pad you can use if your dash is textured.
I second the ProClip. You can get a custom mount for your vehicle, and select a separate holder. I've got a custom mount and a universal holder that can be adjusted if you switch phones.
I second the recommendations for iOttie mounts. I bought their wireless charging one back when I got my Galaxy S6, but I still use it with my Pixels because it is incredibly convenient to secure and remove the device. Excellent quality, usability, and adjustability, well worth the purchase.

Looks like a solid product! I have an '09 Kia Spectra and the dash doesn't look like an easy place to put a phone mount. I checked out their custom mount for my car and the only drawback I can see is it completely covers a vent (for a/c) which may or may not be an issues, I won't know until mounted but.. Any experience with that for you?
Yea on my prior vehicle I had it cover the vent. It was out far enough so it still put out air but it wasn't really directional as far as flow as before. Center ones I didn't care as much about being pointed at me to keep cool. It was a solid bracket though

I have an existing car mount for my S7 before I got the XL, it holds the phone in landscape and squeezes the sides. Little concerned that this may not be good for the squeeze sensors. Anyone think it could affect the sensors over time?

Another vote for Proclip's mounting solution. The universal large holder works fine with my Pixel 2 XL with a (Caseology Parallax) case. It's pricey but it works beautifully.
I just ordered the IOAuto magnet holder to use with Proclip's mounting bracket. I'm tired of sliding my phone into the holder. 1st world problems, I know.

I bought the IOAuto Pro. It attaches to the vehicle mount that I purchased previously from Proclip. It comes with small circular metal disks that should be attached to your phone.
I hate the thought of using adhesive to stick anything on my phone so I'm going to try and place the disk between the phone and my TPU case. In think the magnet will still work fine.
Check out YouTube. I've seen a couple of videos of others installing it.

I like this simple magnetic holder:
Techmatte MagGrip Orbit Universal Air Vent Magnetic Car Mount Holder
It requires a thin metal plate which works fine if you use a TPU case or other case that's not too thick on the back; this way, it doesn't require any permanent application. I bought 3 for family members, and a friend got one after seeing mine. It's easy to mount, secure, very simple in design - it uses a steel ball that mounts to an air vent, and a magnetic piece that connects to the ball, giving easy adjustment in all directions, or complete removal. This magnetic piece connects to the phone's steel plate. My wife has an iphone 6P which works well; I have a nexus 5X.

I'm curious to see if that works out for you. I'm intrigued, but it seems like $50 is a bit steep for that mount. If it works well for you with a case, I may consider it though.
I know my solution isn't going to be for everyone, but it works well for my needs. I have a hybrid Proclip/Ram Mount solution. Proclip for the center dash mount, then Ram Mounts for the rest (ball, short arm, and X Grip holder). It's more involved than the common solutions, but it puts my phone right whereIi want it and it's rock solid--which is important for those track days.
As mentioned upthread, this does partially block the vent, but on my Mustang not by too much, and the passenger still gets air flow when it's directed their way. A bonus is the phone stays nice & cool when staying on playing podcasts while commuting, or running the telemetry apps while on track.
I can strongly recommend this one. They're a little pricey but I have them in my truck, car, 4-wheeler and mountain bike. Just the spring clips are strong and when you add the rubber sling it'll hold on to the phone almost no matter what. This one actually fits my P2XL better than my PXL. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0066BWMNU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What is everyone using?
My old side spring grip style one isn't going to work. I love the thing but it either presses on the volume buttons or activates Assistant. Have any of you found one that works without these issues?
I'm considering one of the magnetic ones but I don't like the idea of having to add a piece of metal to the back of my case.
Any success stories?
I've been using this one since my pixel 1. Love it, the build is ridiculously solid, I'll probably never need to buy a mount ever again. It's only a few solid aluminum pieces. The metal plates you put on your case are very thin. The magnetic pull doesn't start until it literally gets to the plate. The plate doesn't look bad. But that's the only draw back I think. I'm happy with it though. Good luck!
I mounted mine on my window, my wife has hers on the dashboard. It's been about a year and is lasting very well. The mount shows no wear and tear.

I really like the looks of those! Very clean.
Have you had any issues with the phone wanting to spin on the mount?
Thanks,
Jared
I'm waiting for my Pixel 2 to arrive, but I use a Spigen Magnetic Mount for my air vent currently. They offer a windshield/dash mount also. It holds very tight, but not too tight. No issue with the phone falling and/or rotating during driving.
I'm wondering if any of the Spigen cases will work without the need to put the metal plate inside. I currently have the metal plate inside the back cover of my Galaxy S5, but I can tell there is a bulge where it is placed.
I'm on the list to be notified when these release. By far the best holder charger combo I've ever used https://www.proclipusa.com/category/google-pixel-2
Can't tell you how disappointed when I popped my new phone into the dash mount only to watch the volume drop on it's own. The volume rocker placement on the Pixel 2 leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not a huge fan of magnets interfacing with computers to be honest. Hope I can find a decent alternative.
I use the Tetrax, both the Fix and Xway. Most of the time I use the Fix, because I like having my air vents actually blowing air on ME, but in the summer, on a long drive, using the GPS and charging the device, it can sometimes get warm. I just take it off the Fix, and move it to the air vent to let the air conditioner cool it down. I've used this system for nearly a decade, not sure if the Pixel 2 will get warm enough to need the air vent.
The only thing you need to put on the phone is a small metal button. The package comes with several sizes. I adhere this to my Spigen Thin Fit case, so it doesn't have to be attached to the actual phone.

I got two of these yesterday, one for me and another for a Xmas gift.
Works great. I have had co-workers, friends and family who have seen it, express interest in getting one for themselves.
I order 6 extra plates to go with each unit. It already comes with several extras. I have only used one plate so far because a allot of places I will use it are metal surfaces.
I put the thin disc on the back of my phone and put my case back on. Nothing to see until I actually use it.
Good mount.

Ok
Brodit
Adjustable active Brodit + ProClip :good:
I started using the Scosche magnetic mount with my Pixel 2 and really like it. The metal plate on the phone is very thin and I can't see it since I have a black TPU case. If you don't use a case or have a transparent one, you'll need to be ok with being able to see that. I already had a mounting surface on my car so I just stuck the magnet to that. I haven't noticed the magnet doing anything funky to my phone.

I second this, I find the magnetic car mount is by far the best I've ever used, the one i previously used, used to activate active edge or turn volume down, which was quite annoying.
Scosche
I was using Scosche before Brodit.
awesome
