Help with 5x not booting/charging? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having an odd issue with my wife's 5x (completely stock).
She brought it to me this morning - the phone wouldn't boot. She didn't think the batter was dead, but she wasn't sure.
I hooked it up to charge, left it for an hour. I notice now the charging indicator comes on screen for about 2 seconds, goes away, then returns a few seconds later, and repeats this.
If I try to boot it, I get the Google logo for a few seconds, then it shuts off.
I can hold volume down and power and get to fastboot, but I'm not sure what to do from here. If I choose recovery, I again get the Google logo for a second, then it shuts down.
Is it the battery? Something else? Any help is appreciated.
EDIT: I want to add, when I unplug it from a charger, I can't do anything - no even partial boot. I just don't think it's charging when it's on the charger because of the battery icon showing and disappearing in cycle. I suspect this is a power/battery issue but don't know what to do.

Do you have a spare USB C cable to try charging it at all?
It could be the cable so its never charging enough to stay on/boot. I assume all your chargers are the proper LG ones and no dodgy USB cable might have fried the phone in any way?
Otherwise contact whoever you need to for warranty repairs by the sound of it.

I think this is 5X problem , LG should take care of it .
This is not charger problem or anything else .
If you can go to download mode it should be fine .

Your phone just turns off or it reboots? If it's rebooting, same issue as mine and another user's phone.
It's probably the power button issue that's somehow always being pressed, making the phone reboots over and over. It happened a lot with nexus 5. I sent my phone to LG for a repair.

I apologize, I freaked out because my phone would not turn on under any circumstances. However, I'm retarded. Apparently it wasn't actually charging while I had it plugged in with a mini-usb cord.
Okay, my battery was at like 10%, I turned off my phone and connected it with a regular USB to Mini-USB cord (not the normal power cord) -- I've done this all the time with this and my Mogul with no problem.
Sitting here on the computer, the phone powers on by itself. I unplug it, and set it aside. A few minutes later I go to turn the screen on, and nothing happens. I hit the soft-reset button and nothing happens, I hold down the power and nothing happens, I remove the battery and put it back and nothing happens, I plug it back in and try to power it on and nothing happens (though the light shows that it's charging), try the hard-reset combination of buttons and nothing happens.
What the hell just happened to my phone? I found one thread on XDA that reported a similar problem with no real responses. Did my phone just die? I think this might have happened before, and all I did was leave the battery out for a few minutes and then put it back and it worked, but I'm not sure if I'm misremembering. That hasn't worked anyways.
Any info on this problem? I REALLY don't want to send it in for replacement without even being able to back it up, nor do I want to unnecessarily buy a new battery (which might not even work).

[Q] sponteneously bricked EVO-4g

I have a rooted HTC evo 4g. I rooted it about 2 months ago and have had no problems.
I woke up this morning, and it is bricked. I have not recently flashed anything or done anything beyond regular phone use.
i cannot enter download mode, and the "charging" led does not come on.
Any suggestions?
What does your phone do when you press the power button?
Have you removed the battery and inspected for indications of damage such as discoloration or bulges?
Have you tried connecting a different USB cable that is known to be working?
Have you visually inspected the USB connector for loose/damaged conductors?

the power button does nothing.
The usb cable and wall adapter works on my kindle, and i tried an additional one with no results.
The battery appears normal, however my next planned step is to try and get a replacement battery and see if that works.
Try taking battery out and then plug usb cable in only and try to turn on...

no dice.
also wondering about the cause... 2 potential things:
- I've noticed that the phone gets very hot. 40+ degrees even when not running much. Is this within normal tolerance or could i be looking at heat damage.
- I've been getting the pop-up asking me to do some sort of OTA update. I keep saying no, because i know these ota updates can be incompatible with rooted phones. Could it have pushed through somehow and if it did could it cause the problem i am experiencing?
phone is fixed.
A read on the sprint forum that sometimes holding down the power for an extended time can get the phone to be responsive... had to hold it for like 90 seconds. It then flashed the white evo boot screen and powered back down almost immediately.
After this, however, the orange charging light came on and i was able to get to boot loader. I let the phone charge for a while, then it boot up as normal.
One of the things i noticed is that the battery is practically completely drained... this is odd as it was plugged into the charger when it died. On the same sprint forum, others have speculated that sometimes the battery can drain to the point where it wont accept a charge anymore... so maybe thats the issue.

Galaxy S II Won't Turn On or Charge!!!

BACKGROUND:
At first, it just started turning off for no reason (probably a month and a half ago).
Then this week, it would start to randomly turn off, and start vibrating constantly when charging. After fiddling with the buttons, it would eventually find itself into download mode and then later turn itself on.
NOW:
Monday morning, after several days of draining the battery to 0% (due to me solely charging it for an hour a day), the phone went dead. Then, that night, upon trying to charge it and turn it on, it remained stuck on a black screen. After taking out the battery, it would continuously beep while still connected to the charger. As soon as I put in the battery, it would become COMPLETELY unresponsive, with and without the charger. After fiddling with it for over an hour, I put it down and slept, leaving the battery and charge in the phone.
Tuesday morning, I clicked the power button, and the phone flashed to the lock screen. It displayed it was at 0% battery, but I think it showed a charging sign. I used the phone for almost 2 minutes, checking my texts, before it again went completely black. The phone became completely unresponsive (no beeping or anything, regardless of anything I did). I connected it to a wall charger again, and left it there for the entire afternoon.
Then when I picked it up at around 6 o clock, I discovered that the continuous beeping stopped, and it would only beep after holding the power button for around 5 seconds. It could beep regardless of whether the battery was out or not.
After charging it all that night, I found I could make it flash the Samsung logo for a fraction of a second after holding down both volume buttons and the power button. I looked it up, and supposedly it brings you to recovery mode, but I believe my phone is switching off immediately after bringing up the logo.
At around 12, Tuesday night, I again decided to hold down the power button (just to reassure myself of it still somewhat functioning), and it powered on for around ten seconds (!!!) . It got all the way to the end of the pink loading bar screen, but then beeped and restarted. The second time, it lasted only around three seconds, without even getting to the loading bar screen, before powering off. It became completely unresponsive afterwards, no beeping, regardless of where it was charging and whether the battery was in or not.
Wednesday morning (today), after having left it charge all night, the phone still was completely unresponsive. I then left it to charge the entire afternoon (until now), and it was still completely unresponsive. I took it apart and played around with the power button, but it didn't seem to be stuck. I've now put it back together and leaving it connected to the wall charger once again.
What I've Tried:
Tried connecting it to Kies (computer doesn't even recognize it)
Tried putting into Recovery Mode (unresponsive)
Tried putting into Download Mode (unresponsive)
Switched chargers (unresponsive)
Held power button (beeps, now doesn't do anything)
Held both volume buttons and power button (beeps then quickly flashes samsung logo)
Cleaned off some of the micro usb lint with a tooth pick (coincided with the stopping of continuous beeping, not sure if it caused it)
What I think it could be:
Faulty power button (this is what I thought it was, but now it's not vibrating)
Faulty battery (I kept draining to 0%, but if this is the problem, it doesn't explain the phone not displaying anything when it's connected to a charger w/o battery inside)
Faulty usb charging port (I've heard it sometimes causes vibration problems. wouldnt explain the restarting).
Fried motherboard (phone has had some water damage, but I'm not sure if it's the MOBO, considering its symptoms)
HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Not Alone
hey, this isnt really an answer, but maybe something to bump this up. Mine went last night.... won't boot, won't charge... goes into download mode but no matter how many times i switch cables, install Samsung drivers, install Keis, or anything imaginable- i cannot get it to communicate with my PC. if i could i would be able to fix this problem.
i really hope that someone will take a look at these issues and give some input. my call to Samsung was useless, i wasted hours with redundancy. I bought the phone used off Ebay in mint condition... have taken it apart and cleaned it with no avail. i fear that soon the battery will be dead and there's no way to charge it. sucks. Samsung really should recall/replace this because so many people have similar issues. whether it's the USB Flex or the battery or the motherboard they should be responsible. looks like ill be getting a nexus 4 afterall.
please let me know if you figure anything out.

It may be your battery, u need to remember why they tell u not to run the phone that way, the batteries our phones run need to maintain a certain charge in order to work correctly, if like u said u only charged it an hr or so a fah for over a week and drained completely more than once u may have rendered ur battery unable to hold a charge, in effect not allowing the phone to run its boot process, I would try a new battery, because beyond that the only other logical explanation is a hardware failure, stuck power button wouldn't render the device unresponsive only when the battery was put in like that, it would bootloop, have u ever just held ur power button in? The phone vib an shuts down a. Vib again n shut down, not become unresponsive, I would try a new battery, and if it works, respect the charge lol

I would agree, seems to be the battery. I bought 2 batteries and a 110V charger on eBay for $30. They don't have the NFC antenna in them but I've never missed it. Not only that but charging that way saves the wear and tear on the USB port.

[Q] Phone Boots when battery is connected then goes black.

First thing is first, I have been searching here and Google and have not found this exact problem.
I am running cm-11-20140719-NIGHTLY currently
Today my phone turned off on its own while connected to a car charger.
Here is what it is doing.
When the battery is connected the phone turns on and gets to the Samsung logo, then it goes black. No back light, nothing. If I pull the battery and re-insert it, it happens again. Once it goes black none of the buttons seem to be responsive (cannot force a reboot by holding the power button). Once it goes black if I connect it to a charger I get no LED indicating charge level.
If I try to boot into recovery I see the blue text and then it goes black.
If I try to boot into download mode I can get to the triangle screen if I am fast and then it goes black.
If I have a data USB cable connected and I connect the battery the phone does nothing, and will not respond to the power button, again no LED light indicating charge level.
If I have a charge only cable (wall outlet) connected and I connect the battery I see the battery charge icon for about 1 second and then the screen goes black. and the phone will not respond to any buttons.
I have duplicated all these things with 2 batteries both actual Samsung batteries, neither of the batteries is bubbled out at all.
I have tried leaving the battery out for several hours, but this did not help.
I have data on this phone that was not backed up so any suggestions I will try.
Thanks

Return to stock with Odin to see if the problem goes away. If not, report back and we will go from there.

I would if I could get it into download mode... The screen will not stay on for more than 5 seconds and ODIN never sees the phone.
Here's a thread talking about that issue. I'm afraid it sounds like your display is dead:

I had this problem before and I was freaking out, but it was just the cord I used when trying to connect it, but yours sounds like an overload problem, maybe from your car charger if it plugs into the car lighter socket. My buddy has a super recharger that hooks into his lighter socket, and while it may charge fast, it might have jolted your phone, or maybe you had it over clocked in your rom? Or was it a recent occurrence or did it happen as soon as you installed the rom? Because this happens on a bad flash sometimes, if your Wi-Fi connection is shaky or far off, you could get a bad download and it will royally harm your time having to mess with it.

I had flashed the night before and it ran fine all night and all morning, then it just shut down. The car charger I use is not a super charger, but it is also not a Samsung charger. I was not overclocked and my wifi is not shaky usually.
Seems like I am screwed either way.

This blows, I just had the Same Exact thing happen last night, word for word.
Although I'm on a stock Rom that's rooted.
Phone was in my pocket and it vibrated as it restarted on its own. Pulled it out of my pocket, waited for it to fully start up, then I could use it.
However, it rebooted 2 minutes later and has Never come back yet.
I wish there was some sure fire way to verify if its the screen that went bad or the logic board. The mere fact the screen shows the Galaxy S4 logo, or Download Mode for a few seconds before shutting off seems weird if the screen was in fact bad.... =(

You were correct! Had to mess with that button a bit to get to work properly, but its still an issue. One to many power button presses and the issue returns.
I have tested the phone without the exterior power button only using the logic board button and it did that same thing. Am I correct to assume that the fault is the actual button on the logic board? So new logic board to fix this? =(
Why so many presses of the power button?

charging with the power off

I've not had my Pixel very long so I'm unsure if this behavior is normal. If I power down the phone and plug in the charger the phone will boot up. If I'm charging the phone and shut it down the phone turns off for maybe half a minute before booting back up. Is this normal or should the phone stay off while charging?
If I plug mine in when off I get the big battery showing it's charging it doesn't turn on

Definitely not normal behavior, I can turn my phone off and it will stay off when I plug it in.
Thank you for the replies. Google agrees that is not correct behavior and suggested a factory rest. The reset did not correct the problem.
