Vodafone - nasty bloatware tackticks... - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I just read on another forum that Vodafone are pushing bloatware to your phone even if you have a Sim free phone bought independently... They are disguising it as an ota update and trying to trick you into loading their bloatware apps...
Scummy attitude!
They keep pushing it to your phone until you download it...
I'm sure they do it for all phone brands, but I'm putting it here as it happened to a 10 user.

I think it's smart. They use the ota system to get to a higher userbase for their applications. That's called smart marketing and not illegal. So if you don't like it just press no or flash a custom rom and be done with those messages

You can select NO to decline, but every once in a while it will pop up again (restarts/search for updates). I have a SIM free phone and this is a bit annoying. It is a burden to be a VF customer, I think they should cut that s*it. Also it's not called smart marketing, it's called how to upset and lose customers.

When your apps suck so bad that you have to resort to sly tactics to sneak in your bloatware!

Actually, its not just Vodafone. Its any carrier. I have German Vodafone SIM and Croatian T-Mobile SIM and when I switch them out I get the same popup just with different carriers. Its HTC customization that lets you download predefined apps from your carrier even if you bought your phone unlocked.
Good thing is that this is probably installed just as an app, and you can probably delete it or it will be automatically deleted when you switch SIMs again.
I havent tried to download it but Im quite sure this is just a HTC "feature" instead of carrier bloat. And besides, Vodafone has a lot more bloat than this tiny 5 MB.

I had this too on Dutch Vodafone. But to be fair, I also got this at some point on the One M8 I had before my current 10. So it's not device specific either.

Create a while list of phone numbers?

Is it possible to restrict the phone numbers the phone can call?
I want to restrict calling to certain list of approved phone numbers. Is this possible?
Should be possible with any phone and carrier, as long as you know your sim's PIN2 code. You should be able to enable it in Settings > Call > Fixed Dialing Numbers.
Good luck finding your SIM PIN 2 though. The default for T-Mobile is supposedly 5678, but I have found that it is hit or miss whether T-Mobile SIMs actually have the default values.
I can't speak for US users, but in Romania every SIM comes with its own set of PIN, PIN2, PUK, PUK2.
So I'm SOL with a Bell Desire Z?
If you can't find the PIN2 on the SIM card (the large, credit card-sized one), call Bell and they should be able to provide you with one.
Maybe I'm just missing it, but on the European ROM I can't see anything under Call->Settings for fixed dialling numbers.

Build 1.34.405.5, CID HTC__032 (WWE, not branded)
Thanks. That's odd though, because I'm on that same ROM version and I don't see those options. I can only guess that it must be carrier/SIMcard-specific ?

[Q] How to buy paid apps in China on ICS

Yes I searched, I didn't find the answer.
I recently got a Galaxy Nexus, have ICS 4.0.4, am rooted, and live in China. I know the market restricts paid apps in China, but I had a workaround when I had my Galaxy S before: MarketAccess.
Well it seems MarketAccess does not work with Play in ICS. I can still emulate, paid apps appear (they do not before emulating the foreign sim) but I can not buy.
There has to be a workaround (other than plugging in a foreign sim, I don't have one). Any ideas? Links?
thanks!
I bought apps from google play, no problem whatsoever...some apps doesn't appear and I use market enabler.
What simcard provider are you using?
I have a China Mobile sim card. What's yours?
Same...CMCC as well

This stopped working now in February 2013... Anyone know what changed in the Play Store validation conditions?

Problem Setting up Google Wallet?

If you can't get Google Wallet to work as a new install dafoxs has come across some interesting information. There is a change in the SIM card AT&T will be using and he thinks the inability to set up GW as new has to do with this new SIM. I contacted AT&T corporate c/s and this was the response they gave me;
"Thank you for using AT&T!
This email is a follow-up to our conversation earlier today; below is a summary of our discussion:
• Based on our discussion on 4/19/2013 regarding wireless number(s) 215-XXX-XXXX the following items were discussed: the isis mobile wallet system does require a new sim. the new sim is called Gemalto UICC-F SIM card and it has an embedded secure element. however it has not yet been launched in your market and therefore the sim cards are currently not avalible to you.
If you have further questions about your AT&T account, please refer to http://www.att.com/biz or by calling us at 1-866-ATT-7629."
dafoxs believes (and it makes sense) GW has made some subtle change on their end to make their app compatible with AT&T phones and are also using this new secure element. If this is the case we may be SOL until the new SIM becomes available.
That's funny, just got this. The item number is there

Show Some Love
[Edit: Superfluous.]
When I ordered my SE SIM...ATT verified my location before issuing the card for use with ISIS.
So it makes sense that if users don't reside in the ISIS test areas, ATT won't issue cards if they can't be used.
Why would they. ..
This is a serious problem. ..in getting a working gwallet....g

[SCAMMED] I think I was just scammed by unlockriver.com

Tried to unlock my phone from unlockriver.com (I did it before). However, I am on unlocked firmware and I was expecting an unlock code. However, instead I just got instructions telling me how to use the T-Mobile unlock app. I paid $45 for instructions on how to use something that will not work considering I have not had the phone long enough.

EDIT: To even use the T-Mobile unlock app I will need to revert back to T-Mobile firmware and then use the app. The device T-Mobile variant shouldn't even be listed on their site as it is just a scam.

on the site there is this
Remember: * if we can’t unlock your phone, you will get your money back.
get your money back. there is no need to unlock the HTC sim card I'm pretty sure. if your trying to get unlocked bootloader go here http://htcdev.com/ if your trying to get s-off also go here http://theroot.ninja/
Isn't there a law (at least in the US) that carriers have to unlock their phones for free so long as there isn't any payment due on the device?

A Microsoft/Nokia Feature phone (Windows 10 Mobile) inspiration, may be something to look at?

Ok before you laugh, have a look about the internet, I was frankly stunned by this old news, as I would have gone all in on a Microsoft/Nokia Feature Phone. I would still drop my Android in a heart beat to have this. As for years I ran an Old Audiovox SMT 5600 WinMo 5 candy bar phone, even with the T9 text it did all I ever wanted phone calls, texts, and music in my pocket. None of the fancy streaming or data collection crap with facebook and it's evil partners
Any way I stray away from the Topic.... Sources for the Microsoft RM-1181/82/83
Windows Central Zac Bowden did a write up of a hands on.....
https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-feature-phone-rm-1182-windows
Nokia Power User also had pics and a write up
RM-1182 was a Microsoft-branded Feature-phone
RM-1182 seems to be a Microsoft-branded Feature-phone
nokiapoweruser.com
A YouTube video of it's startup, prototype password stuff
Then to my surprise a few are in the wild and for sale.....
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295117884704
I would buy one, but I have no idea how much is working, what of the phone works, or how to even start to poke about and look to rip out a rom to see if other newer Hardware in the HMD/Nokia line could be made to run what ever this runs. It comes from China, so I am guessing it will take forever to get one with the world in the state it's in.
In any case just putting it out to see if anyone gets sparked with an itch. I know my itch is sparked and I have no idea how long I can hold off trying to grab one. As I have been thinking of going back to a feature phone for some time as I have no need for all the crap a Smart Phone does, but I am older and not driven by a need for social media junk.
