Got s2 today . need help installing custom rom . - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

hey every one . i got a t989 today in good condition for decent price as a secondary phone . the phone is running on stock 4.1.2 .
i want to run newer custom rom ( probably c12.1 / cm13 ) . problem is it is my first samsung device to install a custom rom on and i am a bit confused so here what i know so correct me if i am wrong .
1- install odin then flash twrp 2.8.7
2- reboot to recovery so the stock rom won't go back to stock
3- from recovery install the latest version twrp 3.0.2
4- do a full wipe then install rom and gapps .
----
i downloaded twrp 2.8.7 from the twrp website . the .tar file
for the rom and twrp 3 i will download this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...unofficial-cyanogenmod-13-0-hercules-t3246059
so am i missing something ? is every thing ready to go ?

Go baby go
---------- Post added at 07:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:52 PM ----------
before you fully wipe you must root your phone and then flash a new rom

there is no need to root your phone since you have flash twrp from odin make and make sure you flash the twrp of the owner

I just got one too and looking forward to get CM13, I've read something about a .pit file and "Virtual Partition"... what about it? do I need to flash something more? thanks in advance for your time, and sorry for the noobish question.
EDIT: nevermind, seems like I need to get my eyes checked. Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2-tmobile/help/qa-cyanogenmod-13-0-t3319195

[ROM][d802] Recovery Flashable PURE STOCK EUR OPEN 80220f (+ root)

Made this from the new 80220f open EUR kdz.
This is the complete LG KK 20f ROM - nothing missing or messed with.
You can flash SuperSU and get root if you wish - your choice.
I provide this assuming you have an understanding of the terminology used below and appreciate that any flashing activity has some risk.
I strongly advise against using any form of restore from previous backups, such as TB or Nandroid.
Once the process is complete, custom recovery will be lost.
Method:
Download both the ROM zip file linked below and SuperSU zip file (if you want root) and copy to your SD card.
You need to be already on Rooted JB, Rooted KK or PURE CM11 with either TWRP 2.6.3.3 or 2.6.3.4 or TWRP 2.7.0.0 (nothing else).
Reboot to TWRP recovery
Wipe: System, Data, Cache. Dalvik (nothing else)
Flash the ROM zip - ignore any "FAIL" warnings.
Wipe Cache and Dalvik (nothing else)
Go to the Mount page in TWRP and select System (leave the other defaults alone)
Flash the SuperSU zip - ignore any "FAIL" warnings
Reboot
Done
Don't use AutoRec to flash TWRP - you will lose Knock code.
Alternatively - if you have flashed TWRP on another KK Stock ROM (using AutoRec), you can full wipe (not SDCard) and flash this directly without going back to JB.
Download from here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_ESvfVtZzEwaWRaTjRNUEdDOEE/edit?usp=sharing
Credit to Chainfire for the rooting method.

if we just edit the updater script and remove the recovery partition , our recovery wont be wiped just note that you should never take any OTA while u have custom recovery.

Yes,you will lose your custom recovery if you install this stock rom. But don't care about it.You may use AutoRec and your recovery will be back :good:
Edit : Hmm i think knock code will unusable if we flash TWRP with AutoRec.
Edit 2 : Aarghh i misunderstood. After using AutoRec and we will install any kernel with knock code support.
Flashing this rom is basically just a means of going back to stock. Of course you can use autorec to recovery and then flash a custom kernel to get knock code back, its up to you what you want out of this.

If i'm not wrong, the alternative method is not addicted to keep custom recovery. The custom recovery (whatever you have) won't be there after flashing this rom all the way mate.:good:

Precisely!
If someone already has Custom Recovery, and isn't overly bothered about preserving it, then this is potentially quicker and easier that then kdz method. And with easy root. Big plus point.
If you want a completely Stock experience of course.
What we don't know is how much development LG have done with the kernel. So, if one uses Autorec, any benefits of a later LG stock kernel will be lost.
Enjoy!
I am on v20d stock kit kat rooted with ioroot. D802 model. Does this flashabel rom include bootloader? Cause to have a custom recovery, I will have to use autorec app, which will dowgrade my bootloader. So will this rom work if the recovery has been flashed with autorec?
And also flashing this rom means that stock recovery will be flashed too?
I installed this 20f. it corrects problems ratio with slimport on small screen.
Just updated to D80220F. I can confirm that there is a Google Folder pre created. Havent noticed much else yet. will keep you updated.
Whole system feels super fast. Is it just me or is this faster than 802D/802B?
Knock on seems more reliable. Senses it way better and ignores ghost touches better.. Auto brightness seems to be managing brightness better too.
i have twrp 2.7.0.0 custom recovery, and i'm on d802b firmware (kk stock) with dorimanx kernel...
just 1 question to be sure (because i didn't quite get the OP):
- will i lose twrp if i flash this zip? (if yes, how do i get custom recovery back and safely?)
thanks in advance
Not option for ART
---------- Post added at 09:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 PM ----------
60nine yes you lose twrp. It is for return to official.
ok, thanks... and how do i get twrp back? is it even possible?
on that matter - can "recovery.bin" from this zip be replaced by custom recovery .bin file?

Can you make a tutorial or write it down how you did it??? Because I wan't stock rom but don't want to lose recovery....
First root, and autorec for instal recovery. But you need a custom kernel .
---------- Post added at 09:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:54 PM ----------
read a little before
ok, so autorec works for 20f... all i wanted to know... (i don't care for knock code, i just want knock on to work)
the OP was a bit confusing - maybe it needs to be updated with a basic FAQ...
if anyone tried to flash this, then used autorec for custom recovery and flashed latest dorimanx 5.7 kernel - please confirm if knock on works (not knock code)
thanks in advance
Not kernel just autorec

[Q] Total noob here, need (probably very basic) help

Hello, first time poster here!
I bought Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 GT-I8160 and I want to flash CM 11 on it, because the stock Samsung's ROM is very bloated and slow.
I am looking at CM 11 from NovaFusion, which can be found novafusion.pl website.
I have currently downloaded:
cm11.0_codina.nova.20141215.zip
pa_gapps-modular-pico-4.4.4-20150106-signed.zip
I chose pico gapps because I want as less bloat as possible (only actually need Play Store).
The problem is, I don't know what to do next...
Now, I have a few questions:
Can I just flash CM trough the stock/default recovery mode that is already on the phone?
Can I use Odin to flash CM? If so, where is a trusted Odin download?
How do I restore the stock ROM that came with the phone if something goes (terribly :silly wrong?
Is it possible to reset flash counter and any other traces of root & custom ROMs on this phone in case I want to return it to warranty?
I added the "About device" info in the attachment!
1. flash it trough cwm temporary
2. no, you can't. novafusion didn't release Odin package for codina now.
3. backup your stockrom using cwm temporary
4. flashing rom trough cwm not increase flash counter

Can you link me to CWM for this phone?
Also, how does the "temporary" mode work? Does it load up recovery from the microSD card? Just curious.

1. Well, I think the stock recovery doesn't allow you to install zip from sdcard. That's why we use CWM instead (plus it does more things than stock recovery). I recommend CWM
2. No, Custom ROM should be flashed through CWM, I think...
3. You can backup your current ROM (includes apps installed) through CWM and if something goes wrong, you can easily restore it from CWM again. BUT, if somehow you can't get to CWM, you can use ODIN to flash stock ROM and your phone should be back to its original state
4. Yup, it can be done from CWM or ODIN.. same method as in my 3rd answer
PS. I only gave answers to stuff I've done before.. basically, my answers are based on self-experience hope it helps!

Mm.. from what I remember... Temporary CWM will not replace your stock recovery, and you will need to flash the CWM everytime you want to get into CWM Recovery .-.

Here : Temporary CWM.
Thank you everyone, I got CM 11 working easy and nice! :good:
Also, looks like the NovaFusion CM 11 ROM did something to the recovery, now it always boots to CWM even without a microSD card.
Does that mean that I can't get back to old recovery? Can I just flash stock ROM and get it back?
P. S. everything is so damn fast and smooth compared to stock ROM!!!

Yes, Custom ROMs like CM 11 have CWM Recovery or TWRP instead of Stock Recovery because they have functions such as backup your system and more. If you really want to have Stock Recovery then you have to flash Stock ROM using Odin.

Right. Probably that's why most of the people here use Custom ROMs.

KINDLY HELP ME....!!
There is no need to root a phone before installing a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP.
I would use TWRP in place of CWM as CWM is no longer being developed.
If you install Cyanogen recovery, it will replace your existing recovery. I find TWRP to be more flexible that Cyanogen recovery.
LP Cyanogen is cm13 and you should use TWRP to install cm13 ROMs. The AT&T s3 i747 is also known as the d2lte and d2att. ROMs designed for either of these two devices will work on your phone (although maybe not 100%). There is no official CM13 ROM for the s3.
@audit13 , just a quick question ; (because am certainly not as up to date with the wonderful s3) but isnt cm13 MM ? or am i wrong:what:

My bad, yes, MM is CM13, LP is cm12.1. Thanks for catching my mistake
I guess I'm spending too much time bouncing between the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Note 3, s3, and s4 forums!
I came across the different threads about bootloader...i have the bootloader version (I747UCUFNE4).Is that safe to flash the CM-12.1-20160212-NIGHTLY-d2att.zip on my above specified device without bricking my device????
Cm does not touch the bootloader or modem so you should be fine but there is always the chance the something else goes wrong.

@ audit13
i believe what @audit13 said was CWM is no longer being developed. twrp recovery is preferred by most people because they are still making it better. CWM hasnt an update in years.
also if you currently have cyanogen recovery it will be wiped by flashing either CWM or twrp.
yes you can use CWM to install CM12. but again ; twrp has more options and most people prefer it.
so ..... i personally would use twrp to install anything before i used cwm.
remember to make a backup of current setup just in case something goes wrong so that you can still have a working phone.

Trouble after CM Update

Hi, I updated this morning my CM 14.1 on my OnePlus3. No my phone isn't booting anymore. Even Recovery does not work. Only fastboot is available, but Bootloader-Version and Baseband-Version don't have any value. I allready tried flashing twrp again. Terminal on Computer says everything went fine, but I still can't boot in recovery...
Can anyone help me please?
Thanks allready.
Flash modified TWRP ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=21835 ) using fastboot.
Now you should be able to get into recovery.
Then when you're in recovery, flash a firmware package that's compatible with cm 14.1 ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/radio-modem-collection-flashable-zips-t3468628 ) . I was going to attach a link but I can't find which one is supposed to be used, so look around for that :L When I flashed CM I had to use something like 3.2.8 but that might've changed. Good luck and hope this helps
---------- Post added at 15:05 ---------- Previous post was at 15:02 ----------
Also if these steps don't work use the unbrick tool from ( https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/guide-mega-unbrick-guide-for-a-hard-bricked-oneplus-3.452634/ ) which has saved my ass few times. You'll probably need method two. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully especially if you don't want to lose data.
Fastboot showing no values for baseband and bootloader is quite normal on Oneplus 3, atleast its the same behavior on mine and some videos on youtube i saw.

Did it and was going back in Recovery. So I flashed lineageos, because of the end of CM, but everytime I boot, I get in recovery. Do I just need to add the firmware package? Thought it would work with a whole new System ...

The mount setting won't make a difference. I dunno why you're getting into recovery..... It might be the firmware package. Ask around on your ROM's thread on here for which firmware package you should be using.

Tab Pro 10.1 ROM problem - tablet hung

My tablet kept locking on the SAMSUNG startup screen. Previously, I had to do a hard reset. It just happened again. Now I think the original ROM image is lost or damaged. I can do a hard reset, but upon reboot, it does not load the factory image and ask the new computer questions. I have the Wi-Fi SM-T520 and can't find a stock ROM for it.
I downloaded the GraveD ROM 3.0 zip file. But I don't know how to install it. I tried to install update from external device. I put the ZIP file on the sd card and selected the file, but that did nothing. I am very much a beginner at this.
Any advice?

I am running a stock ROM. I assume that I have to root the device first. I downloaded USB_Drivers_1.6.27.0.exe. Win10 will not let me run it "This publisher has been blocked from running software on your machine.". I did some searches and cannot get it to run.
I also tried skipping this step and tried running CF-Auto-Root-picassowifi-picassowifixx-smt520.tar.md5 from the sd card using external option and I get a signature error.
If I use Odin3-v3.10.6.exe, the program "sees" the usb in ID:COM. However after a long wait it reports Fail.
I also tried installing GraveD_V3.0 for the sd card and got the same signature error.
I am close to giving up!
Saw a link to fix the win10 error. Tried it?

Also see if you can install win7 in virtualbox and use that.

Before anything else, please download the three things you need to resurrect your tablet. With Cyanogenmod download servers gone, there's no telling when (and if) you might be able to find another mirror. I was lucky enough to find one myself by intense googling
CM12.1 final nightly (the BEST ROM) for SM-T520

TWRP custom recovery for SM-T520 - Download link and instructions available here:

You don't need root to put TWRP, do it through bootloader (you need Odin and drivers for it at the minimum). Follow instructions very precisely under the section "Odin Install Method (No Root Required)"
I really hope you can bring back the tab to life and get CM12.1 on it. I can feel your pain as I went through the same

LOL, one more thing. Be sure to copy the CM12.1 zip and opengapps zip to your internal storage (or SD card) first. So that by the time you are able to install TWRP successfully and can get inside it, you already have everything you need.
Once in TWRP, do an advanced wipe, wipe out cache/dalvik/system/data (NOT internal storage and SD card). Then "Install" and choose the CM12.1 zip FIRST, then "add more zips", choose opengapps zip second; then flash zips; reboot.
hello
i think if you have a problem with a recovery you must install an other recover
cfautoroot is ok for that

then install cfautoroot with odin the tablet will boots on cmw recovery
then install a new rom and a new recovery
in cfautoroot you have drivers and recovery
don't use drivers from kies or smart switch
