HW Video decoding - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I'm facing an issue with HW video decoding on my HTC 10 stock..
At first I thought it was an MX Player issue as I used VLC temporarily as MXP will crash occasionally... until I noticed that VLC always shows a toast message stating "Hardware decoding error, switching to Software"
So I went back to MXP and disabled HW decoding... and it worked flawlessly...
It wasn't with one type of video, all of them will cause MXP to crash, VLC will just switch to Software...
Any body having any similar issue ?

Videos you downloaded or even Videos you took yourself with the htc camera App?

Downloaded or saved from Whatsapp, FB, Instagram, Twitter, etc...
I just tried with a recorded video and it doesn't have this issue

I'm still facing this issue even with the last software update...
Does any body else facing the same issue, or at least have any clue ?

MX Player works flawlessly when doing HW decoding with hundreds videos what I have downloaded from internet..
The SW decoding check box is cleared in the player settings - in my case..
What I fancy is that you are just unable to understand that your MX Player indeed works in HW decoding mode.
When you once tried to forced it into HW Plus decoding mode, and that didn't work out and MX player crashed.. so you unchecked the HW Plus mode.. Correct? ?

MX player/VPlayer randomly stops playing

Hi again guys,
I understand by the MX player FAQ [sorry I can't post external links because I'm new],
Q: I'm using a Tegra 3 device. It randomly quits playing and returns to video list.
A: It is a known problem of Tegra 3 devices running Android 4.0. It typically happens with S/W decoder, so please use H/W decoder whenever possible.

that Tegra 3 devices experiences the aforementioned problem, probably something to do with software decoding (video playing just randomly stops, but probably more on software than hardware decoding). This problem happens on both VPlayer and MX player. I noticed that this problem seems to affect .avi files only, and on hardware decoding-only players like Diceplayer, there isn't this random stop problem. But I don't really prefer Diceplayer because it has choppy playback as compared to MX or VPlayer.
Question: Does this have something to do with the (quite) recent 4.04 OTA update? I never experienced this problem prior to the OTA. Does anyone experience something similar? Thanks!
diceplayer works fine, even with 1080p videos, and perfectly smooth playback.
are you sure it isn't just a problem with the way your videos have been encoded?
btw if you tap and hold on the video (when in diceplayer) and then 'select player' then software player, and it will disable the hardware encoding (temporarily)

[Q] videos crash after updated RUU

Hi all,
I recently rooted my one x and then decided it wasnt what I wanted so I locked the bootloader and flashed back to the stock rom 1.28 on Three UK.
After that I received an OTA update and since then my videos crash in any media player. I hear that by flashing the boot_signed.img it could fix my problems but I dont know which version to use or where to get it.
I am currently on version 2.17.771.3 after the OTA on H3G.
Can anyone help me please as I am about to throw the thing at the wall.
Thanks in advance,
I have the same problem since the latest OTA.
I have tried MX Player, Mobo Player, VLC.
It seems to happen at random - sometimes I can watch 20 mins without any problems, other times it will crash after 5 seconds.
The video playback stops and screen goes back to the player menu.
Seems to only happen on SW decoding?
Stock, unrooted 2.17.401.2

What kind of video file you have play? Record by device or what kind of format? Does this crash only happen in 3rd party player or even crash on stock media player in gallery. Thanks

Ive had this happen on avi, mkv, mp4 files.
All these files worked perfectly before the 2.17.401.2 update.
So far it does not seem to happen in the stock player, but the stock player does not play all of these files and has limited subtitle support.
I have not tried recorded video files yet.
If you look at the review section on the play store for MX Player and Mobo Player, there seems to be many HOX owners with this problem.
might just be some optimization issues as Ive now tried BS Player and it seems to work well so far.

[Q] Selecting a HW or HW+ decoder when playing back videos causes black screen/hangup

Hello everyone, I remember playing videos without any sort of problem before turning my galaxy nexus in to the support service for a motherboard replacement (it wouldn't turn on no more).
When I got it back I noticed that I was having issues with playing youtube videos (sometimes the video frame would just stay back until the next reboot) and I am now having issues with playing any kind of video file with any video player (I've tried VLC, MX player, BS Player and DicePlayer). They all work if I select the S/W decoder but as soon as I switch to HW or HW+ decoding the video player I am using at that time hangs until OS asks me to kill/wait for the application after a while.
I've tried several kernels and different ROMs but nothing really changed. I've also tried to enable/disable the Force GPU rendering option in the dev settings. I am currently using AOSPA 3.15 with Trinity A3.
Anyone knows what's happening? Could this be happening due to faulty hardware?
Small update: I reverted to the 4.2.2 google stock rom after formatting my whole SD and the issue still persists even after this.
If it works with S/W what's the issue? Why force the hardware to play when it obviously can't?
It stutters, consumes much more battery, YouTube videos don't work and galaxy nexus phones are supposed to reproduce video by hw decoding.

By installing so many players i bet you installed codecs along with , that are not necessary. Fully flash to stock via Odin... If persists its hardware.

video issues

During playback on any app I.e. you tube, stock, mx player video will stop but sound will continue until I tap the screen and video will jump to where the sound is and play ok for a couple seconds and then stop again until I tap the screen. It happens whether I am streaming or playing a file. If I run the video using the software decoder in mx player the issue is not present. So that tells me it's probably a hardware issue, but I don't know where to go from there. Any ideas?

youtube video playback problem

I experience the same thing. Videos are jerky, and after a while the video pauses and the sound continues to play. This is a problem that many users are complaining about on google play store. Don't blame your device, it is just the youtube player acting up. Hopefully they will fix it soon.
Youtube doesnt work at all on cm, so I just use Viral Pro (Youtube Player) instead. It takes a bit getting used to, but it is the better app IMO.
