If you unlock the bootloader then its easy, you just unlock it through sony site here
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
then read this
[D550X] CWM-Based Recovery 6.0.4.6 + ROOT for Xperia Z1 Compact {KitKat!} [20140320]
Now if you want to backup DRM keys first, you must root it before unlocking BL, its a bit tricky but make sure you read instructions. Heres 2 thread for more info
Root and Dual Recovery for Locked Bootloader
[GUIDE] Back up DRM Keys & unlock/relock Bootloader (Noob proof)
As for roms I've only tried CM nightly, so far so good.

Rooting without unlocking bootloader is not hard (test point method to unlockbootloader on 2011 xperias is harder). It takes time though as you need to flash 3 times (z1f/docomo model, then normal z1, root and recovery, then z1 compact), continue to recovery then resore the whole system and do the re-root in recovery. (see link posted above). Rooting to kitkat takes more time as you need to get 4.3 root before update.
Personally I find the 4.3 (124) firmware very stable and relatively bugfree. Sony stock 4.4.2 have some bugs and minor update is reportedly incoming. If you buy and got one with 4.3, installed, my recomendation is to wait updating to kitkat until the updated firmware.
Thanks for the input guys I have decided to wait for z2 compact and hope Sony will give a better quality material also I heard they gave up on ASF so I will stick to my g2 atm since 4.4.2 is absolutely brilliant on it. But definitely be waiting for the z2 compact. Sorry if I wasted your time.

Xperia Z1C owners.. i have a question about the speaker audio output quality.. i was reading the review from gsma and they mentioned about weak audio output, so what im confused about (cos i heard in many reviews) is whether the audio quality is good or not? cos volume levels can be bumped up with all the mods..
Audio for me no problem, there is a thread of mod to boot volume (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476498) if u r rooted. For music I used V4A and better EQ quality.
there is also kitkat fix soon from sony so hopefully will sort out the kitkat bugs.

At the end of the day it's a Phone speaker so it's as good as any other Phone speaker in my opinion.
Considering the phone is water resistant to IP58, I am quite happy with the sound, I expected less.
I'm planning to purchase Z1 compact. However, it seems there may be some issues by flashing non-stock rom on the phone and I would like to ensure I understand what's going on before purchasing it.
If I understand correctly, after unlock the bootloader, the photo token by z1 compact's camera will become worse as you lose the noise reduction and other functions.
I wonder if it is possible for me to flash a non-stock rom, let's say CM, and have the same quality of photo taking comparing to a brand new phone?
If it is possible, how to process it?
I've seen people talking about restore the DRM and relock the phone and also there's a thread about getting some functions back :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
I'm not sure those will apply to non-stock rom.
Thanks a lot!
Non-Stock ROMs are always behind in terms of camera quality.
As above. Plus the advantages and disadvantages of unlocking z1 compact bootloader.
If you want to flash for example custom kernels you will need to unlock it. Some actions just require an unlocked BL.
Disadvantege is that you COULD have issues when sending it in for repair when you messed up the software.
But when you are careful and backup everything you can always restore it. You can also relock it if necessary (backup TA partition!)
I always unlock the bootloaders on my devices and never had any problems.
But its up to you.
I agree. It just depends on your goal.. If you just want a solid setup with trusty performance that you can use daily for a long time, and sync your emails, social sites, financial, etc., then you're probably best off leaving it alone. If you're into customization and trying new things, it's worth it. From what I've read, the only things you lose are the official support issues mentioned above, and some kind of camera functionality that I'm not real clear about. But, there's a lot of development for this phone, and the unofficial support here is likely better than any official support, and you can probably find a solution here for anything you lose.
Thank you so much for your responses .Though I dediced to unlock it anyway. I want to try other kernels .
I have UB, my answer is no, unlock bootloader when you want to try Android 6.0.
Well. For me I decided not to unlock. More than experimenting I need stable working phone, on all areas. Especially Wi-Fi. And I have not time to play every evening with flashing and reflashing.
Stock stuff is not that bad if tuned.
Android 6 may be flashed on locked BL as far as I know.
Hi, I am also wondering if I should unlock my bootloader. Anyway, camera futures are very important for me and I am curious if I will loose for example noise cancelling. I've seen the thread about DRM functions restoration but does it work with CM based roms?

Flat answer : No! 1. Either remain on Sony stock roms or 2. Say goodbye to your camera!

Good thing, you will not lose camera features if you use modded stock camera and noise cancelling will not gone(even in stock). The only thing that i see that u will lose are bravia engine though i glad that is gone(i need color accuracy). though all of it are included and usable even in UB like mxrom(best lp rom i have ever tried)
Hey XDA'rs,
I have a couple questions. I recently (today) bought the Sony Xperia Z5 unlocked Dual International Version with no warranty.
1: Where is the most updated root for this phone? And. Should I upgrade to nougat before rooting?
2: what is currently the best and most stable rom for the z5 premium?
3: any experience with VR and this phone? And anyone use daydream vr headset with it? I know you can trick the headset into allowing the z5 premium. Just curious if anyone had any experiences with vr on it good or bad
4: how do you like the device now and what do you dislike? Please tell me how long you owned it.
5: how water(resistant) is the xperia z5 premium. Can I take it in the pool, shower, or wash it off under a facet?

----------- on android 7.00 - 32.3.A.2.33 -1-april-2017 is the most update rom / about upgrade and root, Nested Thread can be seen at https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=71690027#post71690027
2: what is currently the best and most stable rom for the z5 premium?
------- In my experience - 32.2.A.5.11 on android 6.01 - DEC2016 was the best rom so far. battery very stable)
3: any experience with VR and this phone? And anyone use daydream vr headset with it? I know you can trick the headset into allowing the z5 premium. Just curious if anyone had any experiences with vr on it good or bad
---- pass
4: how do you like the device now and what do you dislike? Please tell me how long you owned it.
---- even as a die hard xperia Fan, i give z5p 7/10 ---- its been 1 year since i am using this device. plz note that z5p is my 6th device so my judgement is based on previous devices/rom/hardware/screen color viewing agles/ heat while watching movies+charging
5: how water(resistant) is the xperia z5 premium. Can I take it in the pool, shower, or wash it off under a facet?
----- I never did hard water test with my z5p since i love the device! but yes i have cleaned it under running tap water, couple of times and the device was ok

if you plan to ROOT your z5p ,,, this means you must unlock the boot loader and you will loose the drm keys!
before upgrading to 7.0 , while device is on android 6 use DIRTYCOW Sript xploit to extract and backup DRMKEYS/TAbackup
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
once your have the gem keys! you can do what ever you want! but plz don't unlock you device before having drmkeys backup!
----- dirtycow don't work on android 7

What are drm keys and why are they important?
And should I root then OTA to nougat 7.0 or should I nougat 7.0 then root?
Will it stay rooted if I OTA update or will it remove flash?
Sorry, I come from Samsung devices with one-click rooting so I'm a noob otherwise

Say no more sir.
I can understand your questions!
Sony in way more sophisticated crafted phones both on hardware and stockrom level!
inshort
1. DRM KEY (Digital Rights Management Keys) are stored in special partitions called TRIM AREA (TA). these keys are required for some SONY proprietary software to work FULLY. 4k Recording in Camera, BRAVIA and X-REALITY Engines, enhance photo features while clicking photographs. if these keys are lost, it will affect the performance of the device
2. whenever you update your device, rooting gets voide so root after OTA
3. since your bootloader is locked , actually you canot ROOT your device! you can only flash stockrom! . or downgrade to android 6.01, extract drm keys via DIRTYCOW script and then unlock bootloader, upgrade to android 7.0 (N) and then root it!
in my xperience! the time taken by me to root 3 different samsung phones was equivalent in Rooting one Z5p :s
rooting sony is very tricky!
Hi. I recently bought RN5 AI and I am pretty happy with what I have for this price range, I am happy with MIUI 10 but I feel that I like the stock Android experience better, so I have some questions regarding this :
1- if someday I want to sell the device and lock the bootloader again, will it show on the bootloader status as locked or RELOCKED?
2- does the latest magisk work on MIUI 10? And does Xposed work as well?
3- do custom ROMs in general feel smoother than MIUI 10? And is multitasking better overall?
4- What is the main disadvantage? and what should I look for when I unlock the bootloader?
.
Thanks a lot in advance, I hope I can get all the answers I need from you guys, this forum is the only place I can find those answers.

1. EDL flashing via MiFlash has "CLEAN all and LOCK" button which flashes ROM and LOCK B/L but only authorized ACCOUNTS can do EDL flashing and bad news is in order to enter into EDL mode, two points on motherboard required to be touched by wire/metal and simultaneously usb should be inserted
2. Magisk YES, xposed NO
3. YES but in all roms whatsapp and fb messenger calling/hearing voice notes etc, closes the screen for 2/3 seconds , don't know why
4. your device become more dependent on you and too many options of new roms/kernel/mods keep you always on toes to flash more and more and again and again! i found it addictive! , also your device become insecure, and anyone can extract your data (if you didnt set finger scanner on custom rom) then you /data paritition is not encrypted and your privacy is at risk
but at the end! for me, its learning experience and if I am only gonna keep Droid on locked bootloader , never test rom, never tweak fone and have fun with it...... then i should better buy iphone
