I've had my HTC Desire since just after launch, and I've had the default HTC Clock/Weather widget on my main screen since then. It's always given my current location pretty accurately, with at most a 15minute delay when I arrive somewhere new.
Until yesterday. Since yesterday my location is given as 'United Kingdom', with what I can only presume is a generic weather info for the UK, which is different from the weather forecast for my actual location (I have my home location as one of the additional places).
I've tried removing the widget and re adding. I've tried powering off and on. I've tried replacing the widget with the one that just does weather. All with the same result, my location remains 'United Kingdom'.
Additional info, the GPS is enabled, and Google Maps and various other apps give my exact location quite happily almost instantly. Syncing works just fine for other apps, and the weather account is enabled under sync.
Any ideas how I can get the weather widget working again properly?
Have you had an OTA update??

check if u have the latest software in the settings+ about phone, cuz pretty sure mine was working bugy untill the latest update
Mine started doing the same after an ota update.
Not found a fix for it, but found a way around it.
All I've done is go into the weather app from the widget, and manually added my city and deleted all the other irrelevant locations.
Not ideal as have to change it manually if I move out of my home city, but better than the generic uk weather until the bug is fixed. It's not often I venture outside the city limits anyway.

hehe funny thing is that i did this work around before the actuall update, as current location never could find the data, after the up it started working fine, suppose different network = different problems

It has been working fine until yesterday. I haven't changed any settings, applied any updates, installed any apps. I've had no system messages that I know of.
I have tried doing a manual update, there are no available updates.
I don't know what the latest version is, but here is what I get...
Firmware version
2.1-update1
Baseband version

I've temporarily done this. Odd thing is that the list of default available cities was a bit strange. It wasn't the same as the list of cities I had selected as weather locations in the widget, and included some odd ones that I would never have selected.
Is there any way I can get a history of OTA updates that I have had?

Well if it means there is an impending Froyo update (i.e. within the next few days) then I'll live with it. Otherwise I wish they'd stop buggering about.
I also have had this issue it started for me about an hour ago... It usually very accurate with my location, I live in Jersey, in the Channel Islands (UK) and it was accurate down to the parish I live in, but all of a sudden it started displaying my location as Escondido and my clock is now 8hrs behind.... Ive never even heard of that place lol...
I cant get around this as my location is not avalible in the list it offers. the best I can do is go into settings, change the time so that atleast the little clock in the top right corner show the correct time, and wait and hope it resloves itself.
On a side note. When I go outside with the phone, the widget has a little fit and switches between Escondido and London. Neither of which are correct.
Hope this is only temporary as its highly irritating...
Well it's still happening for me now, so don't hold your breath. Maybe when T-Mobile release the 2.2 update for my Desire that'll fix it.
Hi I'm using my desire from Brazil with no problems like this. I bought it in switzerland, so it's an unlocked desire running 2.2

I'm having this problem right after Froyo update. I own an Asia Pacific Desire without contract. The weather app and clock widget keep showing the location of a town 70km from where I am.
Hello
I hope this isn't a repost.
I was wondering if anyone else is having an issue with the weather application not showing your correct location. Mine was working fine until Wednesday evening and now it just displays United Kingdom (Current Location). It does update the temperature and Google Maps knows where I am using cell location.
Anyone know of a fix or is this a wider issue with the the accuweather site?
Thanks
Paul
Mines been on the blink for a couple of weeks now. Some times it works and other times it just says UK
Same here - however, when I am in Bath (where the office is), Bath is shown, anywhere else on route now just says United Kingdom.
mine is the same went daft a few weeks ago worked for 1 day on wednesday and know is dead again just saying UK and thats it
Yep. Mine gone bat sh*t stupid too.
Even with gps on, it still doesn't get it right.
Ended up doing a work-around by going into the weather app, deleting all the irrelevant locations (paris, madrid etc) and manually added my city. Won't change when I go somewhere else, but rarely leave my city limits and its better than generic uk weather.
Not too fussed about it. Accuweather (who do the weather info for this widget) are not too crash hot on details anyway. Yesterday I was sat in my office, and it was raining so hard, it was hard to hear over the roar of the rain on the roof. My weather was saying "mostly sunny". Lol. Said the same after I refreshed it, and every uk news station saw this down-pour coming since tuesday.
You are better off having a link to the met office (if you in the uk) on your home page. Or just look out the window!

Mine too. Just says "current location" and nothing else. Has done for weeks.
Does anyone know if there is a fix or planned fix for the problem?
As i`m aware there is no fix, it was easy to fix on WiMo, maybe we should spam HTC for this ?
Weather newer worked on my location, but 2 miles away everything is fine
I think they're updating the locations all the time. Mine used to say Bamber Bridge even though I live in Leyland. It played up saying current location as United Kingdom and then started working again and shows my correct location.
I don't think there's any fix for this apart from manually adding your correct location until they get it fixed.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ok thanks I'll spam them.
I wouldnt be so bothered but this was working last week and I've checked, Sheffield is still a real place....
weather location problem - fix!
I have been looking through other threads and have just found something that seemed to solve this problem.
Turn on the wifi (don't have to connect to any network, literally just have it turned on) and refresh the weather page and the location changes to your current location. Turn the wifi off and it's fine.
It has worked for me so far... I hope this helps someone else. (Phone: HTC Desire HD)

From what I can tell from my experience with the Desire weather widget, having accurate location data is largely dependant on connection quality. By this, I mean that if you're connected to wifi, you're going to get a much better read on things. When using GPRS, the weather seems to get a bit more vague - I'm lucky if I get "United Kingdom", since most of the time it will just say "Current location". I can't say what experience you'd get with EDGE or 3G, since I don't live in an area with either.
Your best bet is to ensure you give your phone every available avenue for location data. On a Desire running Froyo, from the Home screen, press:
Menu -> Settings -> Location
Make sure both "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites" are ticked, then back up out to the Home screen. Go back in to the weather widget (for reference, I mean the clock / weather combo widget here) and refresh it. Give it a little bit, and it should (about 75% of the time) update to your proper location.
Some times when this probably won't work / you may still have trouble:
- When you have your device connected to a computer for the purposes of USB file transfer, tethering or HTC Sync.
- When you are connected to a wireless network using an invalid IP (such as having a static IP set to 192.168.1.x in a 0.x range).
- When you find yourself inside a faraday cage, a mile beneath the surface of the Earth.
This is all likely just common sense stuff that most people are doing already, but hope it helps some of you.
Update with fix [Thanks jayclapp!]
For anyone with this issue, go into your APN settings and remove anything in the "Proxy" field, right below "APN". Fixed the problem immediately for me + jayclapp!

Hi all,
Having an issue downloading anything from the android market on 3G. 3G works for everything else besides downloading from the market (browsing, email, sync, etc).
When I switch to wifi, I can download from the market perfectly fine.
I've tried a friends SIM with a different carrier, and it DOES work over 3G.
Logcat of the issue happening From what I can tell the error starts around line 50, but I included the full log in case it helps.
I'm not much of a developer so I'm just trying to determine why exactly it's happening, as Android simply spits out a pop-up with the useless message:
[App name here] could not be downloaded due to an error.
I have a friend on the same carrier with a Nexus S and she can download apps from the market fine. Haven't been able to test her SIM in my phone yet though.
I've found some others with a similar issue (although not restricted to only happening over 3G): http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=5a31588b6f655e89&hl=en
None of the solutions there helped though. I've cleared market data, wiped, factory reset, tried different roms, etc.
I'd really appreciate any help.
i'm having the same problem - using a galaxy nexus on tmobile. haven't had the change to try on wifi yet.

Glad I'm not the only one...
By searching pastebin, I've found a few others that pasted their logcats with the same issue, but I can't find wherever they posted it to see if a solution ever happened.
One solution I found was to delete / rename the .android_secure folder on the "SD" card, but I see that folder on my phone. I know dotfiles are hidden by default but I'm showing hidden files and I don't even see .android_secure from adb shell.
I'm on Mobilicity in Canada, which also uses AWS bands, not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I don't like bumping, but I still have this issue and was hoping someone could help out.
Sucks only being able to download apps over wifi.
I saw Josh Topolsky from The Verge has been complaining about this issue on twitter the last couple days.
www.twitter.com/joshuatopolsky
I've tried everything to fix it, tried different roms, kernels, wiping, factory reset, different SIM cards, nothing will fix it.
The 403 error indicates that it's Google's servers that are forbidding the connection...but I see no reason why they would, and it's not like I can change the IP address of what my phone is being assigned by the 3G towers.
Everthing was fine on stock untill i flashed revolution hd 1.3.1... I had the same problem with market but for some reason i enabled wifi and started downloading stuff from the market...then i turned it off and magic it worked thru att 3g...
I hope this temp solution might help you guys out or maybe it just worked for me
Ditto
I'm facing the same issue with a Galaxy Nexus (bought from Virgin) on Mobilicity in Toronto: market works on wifi, but not on 3g.
I'm having this problem too. With Orange in Spain.
But is not a constant problem. Sometimes works fine, and another ones not. When the error comes out I try again several times untill it works. If doesn't I whait to have Wifi.
But as I said it isn't always. But some type of bug is.
I got the Galaxy Nexus yesterday from Virgin Mobile and using it with my Telus SIM and Android Market downloads dont work using the mobile network but switch to wifi I can download from Market. I've tried everything you mentioned as well and still no luck.
I have noticed some delays in downloading but I am pretty sure it is becasue of the "little" 10 Billion Apps promotion thats causing the issues.. the market must be seeing a lot more traffic than it can cope with.. servers must be over loaded!
Try market at off peak times (worked for me)!
This theory syncs quite well with the 10 Billion Apps promotion.. just a thought!

Unfortunately that isn't the reason. It's definitely something more serious / buggy than simply too much traffic. It's been going on for almost 2 weeks now, well before that promotion even started.
Anyone feel like pulling a logcat and seeing if it matches up with mine? I'd suspect it does (403 Forbidden errors).
It basically boils down to Google's servers rejecting the connection for one reason or another. 403 error = The server is connectable, but knowingly refused the connection. It's something on Google's end, but I don't understand why certain devices are being rejected while others aren't.
Went to apn settings and removed the proxy and now i can download from market over celluar
Just wanted to confirm your fix worked for me jayclapp!
Updating the OP with the fix, in case anyone stumbles across the same issue.
Bumping up the thread but i believe it's for a good reason.
I had the same problem with I9100 after upgrading to ICS from GB. Talked to Google play support, their solutions weren't helpful (erasing cache and stuff) and they said it's a carrier problem. I used another SIM from the same carrier and it still wasn't working....
So.... Stumbled on this thread, erased the proxy and now it's working!!!
So, i'm bumping this thread so it will perhaps show up in google in a higher search position and to say thanks to the OP (besides the thanks button)
I've only had the HOX for a couple of days. Finally set it up, like I need it to be and then I noticed that my Clock app is force closing, so I can't reliable use it to wake me up in the morning. This is quite a nuissance for me, as even other alarm apps seem to not work properly on my HOX.
I'm on the latest official FW, no bootloader unlock, no root, just plain 1.29.401.7.
Is anybody else experiencing this issues?
Edit: Managed to fix it, at least for me.
All I did was in the settings remove the automatic timezone detection. The clock then opened first time.
However, Taipei is showing in the list, even though I've deleted it from my list of Cities - so I'm guessing there's some location caching issue somewhere.
Anyway, the alarm screen etc. all seems to work for me, so try that.
===========
Can't assist yet I'm afraid, but you aren't alone.
Just received my 3rd HOX (yellow spots, faulty GPS) today and after checking everything and thinking I have a perfect example - clock FCs on startup, every time, regardless of other apps running, straight after a fresh boot, etc.
Oh well, I guess it was too good to be true
Not a biggie for me, because I use Alarm Clock Plus, which worked fine on the previous two HOxs (HOXes?) so hopefully it won't bother me. I can't be bothered to reset to factory settings just to see if the clock works.
I'm on 1.28, preinstalled by T-Mobile, no root or unlocked bootloader yet.
Haven't had time to investigate it much further, but the error log says it's a
'Java.Lang.Nullpointerexception' in WorldClock.java that's the culprit, specifically to do with the updateWeatherData Source Method, so may be something to do with getting the current location?
Forum search only threw up this post, so perhaps its just you and me!
If I find a fix I'll add it here. If anyone else has already found one, please let me know!
Gavin
Hi
Same here, i noticed that my clock app is force closing from time to time. Also noticed that i untick the automatic time update then it starts working again. I think it has something to do with location as for some reason it is not able to find my location (the city) and when i select Brussels for the list it shows it in the map somewhere in Africa
I did remove the weather app form the ROM so maybe it has something to to with that.
I had this same issue and contacted HTC support through their website. They directed me to do a factory reset (!), which is definitely a suboptimal solution, but worked. No FC on the clock since then.
I've been extremely annoyed by the default weather widget not wanting to work as intended, I mean, the only way that works for me is to enter my city manually, that's exactly how I've always wanted to use it but because of the Lockscreen weather widget is always showing the annoying "weather unavailable error" I've tried everything I possibly could think of and nothing seems to to fix it.
My location is on using the battery saving option, that's the way I just use it in all my devices, so I thought it should work if I change it to high accuracy, ehh wrong, the Auto location weather has never worked, not out of the box, not even after I factory reset it twice and not even after debranding it from T-Mobile to the Unlocked US version (it requires unlocking the bootloader so it reseted again), no matter what I do or what Location option I use it never works.
Location is working fine for all the other apps that requires it, just not for the Weather app, it has never asked me for a location permission nor there is an option to allow for it on the App settings, there is no lockscreen options that I can turn on or off and even by resetting the weather and Weather widget apps data and cache, disable and re-enable them, the lockscreen widget still shows and still has the annoying error message.
As you can see I've tried everything and by doing a Google search it seems that it's a known and common HTC issues for years, some people have managed to fix it by doing some of the things I've already done but most of them have never fixed them. I really can't understand how HTC can have an app like the one on the lockscreen that you can't even edit its settings and to make things worst it doesn't work. It should simply pulls the settings from the Home screen one, and work just like that one, but even if you add a city manually it seems to requires the Location to be on so it shows your actual location's weather. That's a huge bug, but the worst one is that the actual location feature doesn't want to work no matter what I do. The error it always gives me when trying to use the Current Location weather is, "unable to detect current weather, pull down to refresh" , it has never worked.
Anyone else with the same issue? Obviously I'm not going to factory reset a 4th time just to see if it finally works, I can deal with the home screen one as at least it works as I want, with manual cities entered, but the one from the lockscreen can't be changed and seeing the error all the time just triggered my worst OCD symptoms.
Hard to believe I'm the only one with this issue...
But to give you all an update, just 1 hour ago I tried again and changed my location to High accuracy, then went to the Location Scanning settings and turned on Wifi scanning, in the weather widget I turned on the Auto detect my location option, rebooted the phone and for my surprise and for the first time I saw the Lockscreen widget showing my location, so I immediately went to the weather app just to see if the Current Location information was finally showing but there was the usual "Unable to detect Current Location" message, after seeing this I went back to my Lockscreen and there were no more weather information and got back the "Weather unavailable" error again.
I'm giving up here, this is just BS and an obvious bug that seems to be happening for years with at least 4 of the last HTC flagships and Sense, do a Google search and you'll see, and worst thing is that it seems nobody is paying attention to it.
Having the same issue here and it so frustrating. Had an A9 as a work phone and the Weather Unavailable bug was infuriating, got the 10 and it seems that the bug is still there.

Well, what worries me the most now is that it seems that you are also in Puerto Rico, San Lorenzo, I live in Caguas, is it possible that this weather app and widget somehow just works in the USA and once it recognizes our location outside the Continental USA gives the error? Pretty dumb if it's just that.
It dont seem to happen with my sister's M9 and my mother's M8. But it could be triggered by it. Would you check if when you choose the weather option on the widget your actual city shows up as a city that is not editable through the settings?

One of the occasions before the number of apps and services resets I've done until now, I saw my City just like yours and I assumed that it was pulling that info from my Contact information or simply that at one point it indeed pulled my Current Location and stored that, but even then, like I said, the Current Location on the weather app has never showed any information, it has always given me the error and just until a couple of hours ago the lockscreen widget has never worked either, a couple of hours ago after another set of app resets and a reboot it worked for a second, for the first time, and once I entered to the weather app and saw the Current Location error again, when I went back to the lockscreen the widget had already lost the info and was showing the error message again.
So maybe it does retrieve it but dont recognize it ?

That's what I'm not afraid of, simply because if that's the case we will be stuck on this forever. Best case scenario and the reason of me posting this here is to try to find a fix or maybe to understand why exactly this happens.
Interesting discovery and update about this issue.
I have the HTC 10 and an S7 edge, so the idea was to alternate between the 2 every once in a whole, so on Tuesday I went back to my S7 edge and I've been using it for the past 5 days, what I immediately realized after I restarted the HTC 10 after removing the Sim card and SD card was that there was no more Weather unavailable error, the Lockscreen widget was showing the information just fine, only thing different was that it didn't have a SIM card installed so what for me was very strange. I don't know if the Desktop widget was going to work or not because I ready have disabled and installed a 3rd party app that was working as the original should have.
Well, today I decided to switch phones again and for my surprise as soon as I installed the Sim card on it and went to the lockscreen, there was the error again, so it can't be a coincidence, there's a huge bug affecting current location information when using what at least seems to be an out of the continental USA carrier, even when I'm using a T-Mobile one, that here in Puerto Rico is the same than in the States. So it may be an APN thing or simply it detects location as out of CONUS and errors out, it's so annoying.
Any ideas guys?

Replicated it! So the theory of this problem being caused by being out of CONUS and having an American sim card could be the problem.

Are you with T-mobile also? Do you also have problems with it not detecting your Time Zone? Since day 1 I need to use manual Time Zone because it has never detected it, so now I'm thinking it may be related. One more thing, are you using the sim card that came with the phone or an old one from other phones?

AT&T and yes, ever since day 1 had the Time Zone problem. When you hit the time on the widget it triggers the Clock app and noticed that on the world clock my home time zone is set to miami. I bet this problem have to do with that. The phone getting a location from the network not being in PR, GPS locating you in PR, the app validates then falses and boila 'Location Unavailable'.

Yes, that's my theory too, it can't understand having a location from the GPS or Wifi that says that we are in Puerto Rico and a US carrier Sim card.
Do you use an old Sim card, one that has been used in other phones before or are you using the one that comes with the phone? I've been just thinking on maybe switch the Sim card for the one that came with it just to see what happens but I also don't want to simply waste a new card just to get the same error.
I have exactly the same issue, I live in the Channel Islands and when I put my Airtel sim into my phone the weather widget on both the lock screen and the home screen shows "location unavailable". However when I take my sim out the widget works perfectly fine! If you have found a way to fix this problem please could you post it here; I am currently trying to contact HTC to report the problem!!!
I had a 55 minutes chat with one of HTC CSR and after a long and frustrating simple step by step troubleshooting, she promised me that she was going to pass the information to the Dev department, I urge you all to do the same, if not, they will simply take this as an isolated incident.

Since I have an Unlocked version I had to use the sim card I have been using for all my phones lately. So having and old or new sim card does not mean anything, for my opinion.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Corillo!!
So... did you manage to fix the issue with the lockscreen widget? I live in Mayaguez and I have an old T-mobile sim card that I had to cut to make it nano, and it's not picking the location either.
Or maybe is the "Junta de control fiscal" that is starting to fu***** with us??? Who knows what the problem is... D - :

No, still the same and it's not the card as I have a brand new Nano card on it and as soon as I insert it does the error, only way it works is with no card and in wifi, just plain stupid and a shame that they seem to not give a *amn to fix it.
I just gave up.

In the viper rom (great rom btw) there in an option in the app "venom tweaks" to change the lock screen to the AOSP JB lock screen. Still no weather but after least it doesn't say "location unavailable" Watch the picture attached.
I'm in the same boat as you guys. I remember around 4 or 5 years ago in my HTC M7 the weather widget used to work flawlessly but after a Sense update everything stopped working. Then I got the HTC One M9 and the same thing. Recently I bought an HTC One A9 to my wife and also has the same issue. So as erasat said there must be a bug in the application that affects users outside US continent.
