I have a question, maybe there is already an answer:
I want to switch to 4G network mode, only when I enable the data (from the quicksettings tiles). Rest of the time, I want to use 2G, or 3G. I guess this (2G, 3G) doesn't affect the receiving of message and calls
I want this for saving the battery and maybe for fixing the "cell standby fix"
I am also using the "Smart network" module for Xposed, but it does not have this functionality(it only enables 2G/3G when screen is off).
Can I achieve somehow this? Thank you....

The underlying problem here is that the 3G signal in my house is quite weak, but not so weak that it is undetectable. If I leave my TP2's band setting set to "Auto" then it keeps trying to switch into 3G mode, then dropping back to 2G, with a delay every time it does it. (Drains the battery too). So I'd like to be able to quickly switch between 2G and 3G mode. (Obviously I could just leave it set to 2G all the time, but this is a waste when I'm at work or in some other place which actually has a good 3G signal).
My current solution is that I've got a start menu shortcut pointing to CMBandSwitching.exe in the Windows folder. (This is the same program that is launched if you go to the TouchFLO "settings" page, then hit Communications/Phone/Band). In here I can change the Network setting between "Auto", "GSM" and "WCDMA" which has the effect of turning 3G on and off.
But... there are horrible side-effects. Switching in this way causes the current data connection to get messed up, so that nothing can actually use it to access the Internet. Web browsers stop working, and I can't receive email. I've tried switching the data connection off and back on in Communications Manager, and this works sometimes; but even when it does, it messes up my ActiveSync schedule settings. And usually I simply can't get the data connection to turn back on. More often than not, when I change the Band setting I end up having to hit the reset button to get everything functioning normally again.
There must surely be a way of turning 3G on and off without disrupting the data connection and ActiveSync settings and requiring a reboot? The phone itself can do this in "Auto" mode if I'm moving between areas of good 3G signal and zero 3G signal. Is there perhaps a way to tweak the behaviour of "Auto" mode so that it needs a higher 3G strength signal to switch to 3G? Or is there any way to convince the phone (while in Auto mode) that there isn't really a 3G signal present (even though there is really a weak signal) so that it switches to 2G in a side-effect-free fashion?

I want a more selective "airplane mode". There are some times when I don't care about receiving calls or texts, but want to use wifi only (or gps only). Turning off APN data isn't enough when I'm still wasting battery life on looking for cell towers.
Any suggestions? Is this kind of radio control even possible (i.e. I could write an app for it if no one has yet)

SwitchPro Widget, has an option in there for keeping Wifi on in Airplane mode. Great widget for the price.
Wi-Fi is separate from the cell radio already. I was on a flight recently with the EVO in airplane mode. I turned on the wi-fi and used the free connection onboard.
Theres a setting for mobile connecion, just look for it.

Just turn on Airplane Mode, then turn on WiFi. Done.
Have just purchased Motorola Defy.
Have no cellular signal at home. No problem, can run on wifi for internet and also use wifi for calling; Defy feature built in.
Cell standby draining battery excessively, ( 90-100% no signal)= ( 40-50% bat drain). If I use the airplane mode to stop cellular search can use wifi for internet but it disables the wifi calling feature ( known as UMA for blackberries).
Is there an app for the Motorola Defy that will disable cell searching for signal but allow both internet and calling wifi usage??
I am not computer programming savvy at all, you guys are the geniuses.
Love the phone hate this particular cell standby catch 22.

I haven't used this app before but I believe this is what you need, it called "Airplane Mode Wi-Fi Tool"
Here is the description of the app
This tool will help you manage your android phone to connect to Wifi networks (Wireless Internet, or Wi-fi) while on Airplane Mode.
This tool works with any version of Android, including 2.0+, however, it is only necessary if you have a device with Android 1.5-1.6. Android 2.0+ allows Wifi to be toggled while on AP Mode.

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded this app and it does enhance the Airplane mode capabilities but does not resolve the issue of being able to turn off cell standby while still being able to use both wifi internet and wifi calling.
Since I am not on a plane but am, instead, at home I believe what is needed is an app that directly addresses the cell standby searching issue and leaves the wifi settings to behave as intended; enabling the cell phone to fully function via wifi for both internet and calling when there is no cellular signal available, without a ridiculously and unnecessarily huge burden being put on the battery for a completely moot point...
If such an app does not exist then I believe there will be a demand for one and I ,for one, would be happy to donate for such an app.

I just installed the application to see how it works.
When you open the application for the first time there is an instruction how to use the app. Obviously, it was designed to work in real world when one is on airplane. However, if you keep scrolling down the instruction page and read the FAQ section (B) then it tells you how you can configure it to use your wireless settings instead.
I hope that solves your problem.

I was aware of your solution before but I thought that would disable the wireless signal as well otherwise I would have mentioned it. I did a test while my wifi was on and disabled the radio option and the wireless stayed connected.

Right, but unlike airplane mode it does not shut down wifi calling. BTW, I do not understand the power drain issue. I leave my radio on while working all day, but using wifi with the wifi calling app set to wifi preferred and am seeing no heavy drain. Maybe -- under that same menu -- one should check to see that the "preferred network type is "GSM only." When wifi calling is disabled (even if wifi is active) the phone should default to GSM auto (PRL). I have noticed occasionally it will stay in GSM auto (PRL) with wifi calling on and that might cause a drain, but not sure.
Further to the discussions in this thread I just noticed after restarting my phone (off & on) the Mobile Data feature is enabled again.
There is another menu option called 'disable on boot'. Disabling data on boot did not work once I restarted my phone to test it but the menu showed the feature was still enabled unlike 'Disable Mobile Data'.

"GSM only" should be the default when you are running wifi + wifi calling. Set your preferences in the wifi calling app to either wifi preferred or wifi only. Maybe that will stop your phone from searching for cell signals. However, if you kill the radio using the hidden menu it will for sure stop it from searching for a signal. So, if you are still getting drain, it's something else.

okay, the facts are: Im in very good 3g reception zone, MIUI 1.6.6 with default kernel, .08 radio, data on, wifi off.
Problem is poor battery life when 3G is enabled. Also, when using mobile data the H icon appears and data moves in and out, but sometimes the H icon just disappears and i get network error? I've tried numerous radio/kernel/rom combinations.
When i put airplanemode on, the battery consumption is constant 2mA (currentwidget). With 2G networks only, its 3-6mA. When 3G enabled, mostly the consumption is 20-40mA and sometimes like 10 times in day with minute interval of refreshing i get 8mA readigs. Any app to check if there is some syncing going on? I use only beautyful widgets weather widget, which updates itself hourly. And the normal contacts and calendar sync on. Fellow MIUI users have much lower consumption, a mate of mine gets 2-4mA when 3g enabled.
3g mobile network is one the battery killers. The h icon stands for hsdpa. This the fastest network but the network coverage is not that good yet (except for big cities). Switch network to 2g network (mobile off). If you really need mobile network, switch on 3g. Otherwise stay with 2g. There's imho no sense in using 3g without needing/using mobile network.

I tried using BatteryFu and APNdroid to get rid of my 3G while screen off. But that combination didnt work so well, sometimes it didnt disable my 3g and sometimes it wouldnt reconnect to 3G when unlocked. Any good programs to manage this?
I also wonder, I never cant download anything when 3G icon is appearing in statusbar. Its normally 3G but when I want to use the internet, it changes to H. Why cant I use the 3G network then? Im also having problems when the H goes to 3G the internet connection is lost. For example in market i get network error. The H wont stay there if there is no traffic for few secs.
Configured apn correctly? If you are not sure, do it again. Furthermore, you could try these settings for mobile network:
Uncheck data enabled and set network to 2g/gsm (depending on what you have). When you need mobile network, switch to "wcmda + gsm (automatically)" (name could be a litte different, translated it from germany) and check data enabled. I do it so and it's working fine.

Okay didnt understand very well what u ment by the last part of ur message
APN configured correctly? I have carrier default APN settings which have been working just fine for a year. If u ment APNdroid i didnt do much configuring with it. Gotta give it another try.
Last idea: flash latest radio.

I'm searching for a way to keep my voice calls trough GSM only while Data is enabled (And i don't want to manually disable data every time I make a call). I'm running Arconium 4.0 with Trinity kernel 2.0, baseband 72.
The 3g calls are sucking a lot of my battery life.

I dont think its possibile... As i know the only way is to set the network mode on GSM only, but this will end in the unabilty to connetc to the internet under 3g network... You may add a toggle widget 2G/3G to tap jus before you start a call...
When u select GSM only, u´ll have EDGE, its fast enough for whatsapp and facebook
