Unlocked at&t m8 only gets edge on T-Mobile please help - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's up guys so let me start out by stating I am no noob when it comes to ROM related funness however I am new to HTC stuff. I bought a at&t HTC one m8 and unlocked the phone then unlocked the bootloader and S off then realized I could only get edge data so I did some reaserch and really can't find anything in how to fix this minus I read how to change the cid to cid 11111111 but still I have no LTE 4g hspa or even 3g any help will be greatly appreciate thanks in advanced.

This may sound silly, but do you have the right APN? If you have, then may be reflash of the firmware can help.

That doesn't sound silly at all.
AT&T version supports the bands used by T-Mobile for LTE (4 and 17). Also supports all the bands used by T-Mobile for 3G, with the exception of the AWS band, which from what I'm hearing T-Mob has mostly migrated from AWS on 3G (so they can use the AWS band for LTE).
The band support is there, so either the SIM card is bad (does it work for 3G and LTE on another device) or wrong APN.

[Q] Verizon HTC One AT&T Sim

Hi,
I purchased Verizon HTC One from craigslist it was mentioned that it is pre-unlocked phone. I have used T-Mobile sim and it is working however when I tried AT&T sim in it that didn't work. It shows at top that network is AT&T but I am unable to make or receive calls. I was able to use data on AT&T's edge network ( though my sim is LTE). I know that both T-Mobile and AT&T are GSM networks and this phone is CDMA/GSM. Does anybody else using AT&T sim on Verizon HTC One? Do I have to change some kind of settings??

Hello,
I have the same Verizon phone and I'm using T-mobile network, but I can't get data started. What APN settings did you use? If
you could please help I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanx,
SiouxV
You will only get edge because Verizon blocked some of the bands that you would need for hspa speeds.

You will have to change settings to gsm/umts as att uses. Settings>mobile data> preferred network. Also Google att 3g apn settings and edit son. You won't get lte but I don't see why you shouldn't get 3g.

Weird because I have a straight talk att and tmobile SIM card with correct apn's set and I only get edge. I know tmobile reformed my area to the 1900 band too. If I pop those SIM cards in my droid DNA I can pick up HSPA speeds with the same apn settings.

That is weird. I would assume if gsm/umts is an option that HTC would have also included the correct bands but nothing surprises me these days.

I think it has only the 1900 and 800 band. Not the 850, which you also need for 3g. Or Verizon blocked those bands despite the phone being factory unlocked.

There's an app called "LTE On/Off", not sure if can download from play store, but included with certain Roms. It allows you to pick different bands. You can select HSPCA/GSM etc. Maybe this will help with other networks??
I'm not sure. On android central I have a thread there about the Verizon one. A person there says he tried it on straight talk with an att SIM and got hspa speeds. I tried both an att and tmobile SIM card in my Verizon one and only got edge with both apn settings. And tmobile rolled out the new bands where I live too. At the time my one was not rooted so I didn't have that app.

could you flash a new radio? Seems like that might help.. and if the hardware is the same and you get the bootloader unlocked, root the device, and achieve s-off could you re-flash firmware, radios, hboot and rom could it potentially operate as a modified at&t (or other gsm) htc one? sorry if this is completely wrong I'm not a firmware guy.. I know basics of rom's and installations that's about it just throwing an idea out there...
Not sure, but you could unlock your cid setting it to all 1's and flash a gsm edition Rom or ruu, flash radios too. Not sure weather it would work or not depending on the Verizon model hardware but all that stuff you can do.
Turns out the guy on android central was wrong, he was also getting edge data but didn't know it.

Are any of you who are trying to use the phone on AT&T running a custom rom, e.g. Cyanogenmod or Santod's Global Edition?
My one max works on at&t fine once you add the apn settings for at&t.
The Verizon one does not have the same frequiences unlocked that require you to have 3g. The DNA has pretty much similar radio frequiences and gets hspa but the HTC one has those bands locked so you only get edge, even with apn settings.

Great. It's usage like this that was a big contributor toward the unlimited data plans going away. Thanks. This is why we can't have nice things.
Back on topic, I'm curious as well if flashing new radios would do the trick.
They would have to be fully compatible and I'm not sure they would be. Maybe possible but I have not tried. Mainly one reason why they stopped selling the DNA.

So the consensus here is that you cant do any better than Edge service when using AT&T SIM in a VZW HTC One?
See, I just swapped my Note 3 AT&T for this phone, and Id like to be able to use data. I use AT&T prepaid but my Note was always able to pickup HSPA and LTE
Have any of you ever tried doing a factory reset from hboot? That will clear out all of the network settings from verizon, and force the phone to be reprogramed from the sim.

I have, with TikTak Google Plus Edition 2.0, I'm still only getting EDGE data (same as with stock) I have tried using a gsm rom, radio, and RUU. The phone wouldn't start with the different radio flash, the RUU would just boot cycle, and the rom would always fail (status 7, 6, 4).
I have spend about 20 hours on this flashing separate roms, radios and pretty much anything i can find

Dev Edition WiFi Calling on T-Mobile

I have an Amber Gold Developer Edition HTC One M8 that I use on T-Mobile and was wondering if it's possible and/or how to get WiFi calling on my model? Do I have to specifically have a T-Mobile branded model or is there a rom I can flash? Thank all!
Flash viper and select tmobile as your carrier. That should work
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Thank you so much. I think that there may be a few incompatibilities with the bands though. I live in a refarmed area so i am not affected but I want to make sure that by flashing Viper and selecting T-Mobile as my carrier it wont mess anything up and/or cause the rom not to work properly! The Dev edition is based on the AT&T model which means although I have the AWS band for LTE, I dont think I have the AWS band for WCDMA like the actual T-Mobile branded model has. As I said I'm in a refarmed area anyway so I surf 3G/H+ on the 1900mhz band and I also have T-Mobile LTE as well. I just want to be sure that I won't mess anything up on the phone!
Sorry for taking so long I didn't know you replied haha, but I'm nearly 100% sure it won't mess anything up. It won't enable that LTE on AWS or anything, but it won't disable bands either. Your phone would work the same.

[Q] Flash T-Mobile Rom on AT&T M8??

I have an AT&T M8 which I unlocked, rooted and s-off'd while under AT&T contract. I then decided to switch to T-Mobile and give this device to my 11-year old son. What I'd like to know/understand is whether I can flash some of the T-Mobile Roms I see in this forum on the AT&T M8 and it work with T-Mobile network? Or do I still need to flash the AT&T Roms?
Thanks in advance for any help advice!
Johnny
SIM unlocked would allow you to use it on stock AT&T too if you choose to. Also everything seems to be interchangeable unless noted. I would go for Rom with T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling, which is amazing btw for those who get sorry service.

You should be able to flash either T-mobile or AT&T (Even roms in the international section, I would recommend InsertCoin) roms without any issues. Eleven and has a M8? Damn, i'm jealous lol.

Thanks for the information to the both ^^^^^^^^ of you! I appreciate it. Yes , he is 11 years old, but a good respectful kid and does well in school. With that I'm okay with giving him nice things. If that should change, then Daddy gets the M8 back!!! LOL
Somewhat related question... If I u were to use an AT&T model on T-Mobile, would everything work correctly, 3g/4g? Comparing the frequency bands online, the AT&T model is missing the 1700 band that the T-Mobile version has. Does that mean the phone doesn't have the hardware components to connect to it? Or is it capable of connecting, just that AT&T doesn't use that band? I'm asking because I want to pickup a used m8, but the T-Mobile version is going for around $100 more than all the other carrier's versions... Could I just SIM unlock an AT&T version and be set, or will some things not work?

That's a good question and hoping someone will have the answer. In the meantime I was able to SIM unlock my son's ATT M8 and install a TMobile SIM using stock ATT rom. So far everything has worked and the 4G symbol does appear in the task bar, although I'm not sure if that really means he's getting 4G. I did have to manually enter the APN settings so he could get mobile data when not connected to wifi.
Tmobile apn settings
Would you mind posting the apn settings that allowed your sons phone to work on 4g and send mms? Its the main reason I'm looking into flashing a Rom and would save me a lot of trouble as I have spent quite a bit of time searching for one that works on my phone and none seem to do the trick.

AT&T m8

Will I lose any lte band support if I convert to tmobile?
Yes, flashing T-Mob US (I assume you mean US, since you are talking AT&T) firmware or RUU will change band support, and you will lose some LTE bands.
According to the specs on GSMarena, with the T-Mob firmware, you will have support for LTE bands 4 and 17; and will lose support for 2, 5, and 7.
What bands do you need, and what carrier are you using?
Tmo USA
What if I merely flash a tmobile based rom

Just flashing the ROM, you won't change the band support.
But again, I'm curious what carrier you are actually using the phone on?

Should work fine.
Being on T-Mob US, and using AT&T radio baseband (part of the firmware that determines band support) should be fine for the most part. Reason I say this is:
1) ATT radio supports the same LTE bands as the T-Mob radio (4 and 17), and then some.
2) ATT radio is missing HSPA (3G) Band 4 (AWS). This used to be the band most widely used by T-Mob for 3G. But my understanding, is that they are well underway in migrating 3G service to 1900 MHz (Band 2) which is supported by the ATT radio.
3) The only "negative" to staying on the ATT radio, that I can see, is that if you happen to be in area where T-Mob is still using AWS for 3G , and you don't have LTE service in that area, either. In that instance, your data will drop down to EDGE (2G). I don't really have an idea of how widespread this situation may be; but I have a feeling its relatively small.

Yea thats why I got an unlocked ATT m8 instead of a tmobile one for the extra lte bands. I have yet to run into band 2 lte and all the aws hspa has been reused for lte. Luckily.

Data issues

So I have a Verizon model M9 using it with a GSM sim. Its a data sim which can roam on both T-Mobile and AT&T.
Here is my issue, T-Mobile is only EDGE in my area, and the phone works perfectly fine on that, but for some strange reason on AT&T HSPA+/3G It will work for a few min and all the sudden stop working even though "H" will still be at the top of the phone like data is there when its went away.
Its not the carrier, or the sim as this exact sim works perfectly fine with my Verizon G4, iPhone 6S, iPhone 5, and so on with no issues.
Any suggestions for those who use this model on another carrier? Or any suggestions what May be causing this?
I've changed my SKU, S-off, root, etc even running stock roms (non verizon roms) , same issue so its not Verizon software causing it. Also tried setting it to WCDMA and other settings and the issue still occurs.
Any ideas would be great! I really like this phone and hate to have to sell it and go find something else or may end up going back to my G2 for my 2nd line. Could Fast Dormancy cause this?
Thanks!
You're going to be handicapped by the physical limitations of the Verizon M9. Check out what bands T-Mobile & AT&T use and see which ones match up with your moel. The bands that the Verizon HTC M9 supports are:
LTE Band 13/4 (700/1700MHz),
CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900)
HSPA/UMTS(850/900/1900/2100)

Thanks but it's not a matter of being supported. It supports AT&T 100% 2G and 3G wise. I get HSPA+ just fine without issue its a matter of the phone some how loosing data connection randomly until putting it into airplane mode or rechoosing the network under network selection. But it's fully supported AT&T 3G wise.

Thanks I might try that. Yeah it's not the matter of the bands is the issue.
What's strange is I'm not having signal issues as signal is perfect it's just the weird loosing data issue while signal is perfectly fine. But worth a shot.
