LG G4 display burns? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello i would really like your opinion about something wierd with my phone.
I have a LG G4 and after a while that the screen is alight I get display burns of the parts the didnt change in the screen and have a bright color (such as the clock and battery status, it also happens in games that i play which have the buttons displayed in bright color).
It calms down after a few minutes that the screen is turned of or i force it to display something diffrent in the burned parts
I'm having a video attached so you can see what i mean (in the video i spoke some language, please ignore)
In the video the burned parts are at the top and top left (the "share" sign)
youtube.com/watch?v=Gcl0NOHPL3w
(i cant post links..)
Is it a normal thing to have on a phone like LG G4 considering the type of screen it has(LED)?

Ive had 3 g series phones now g2 g3 g4. I have set my screen sometimes to not turn off. Some items displayed for more than a hour or 2. I have never had any screen burn on any of the g series. Some people claim they have i personally have not. My g2 was the closest to a screen burn. It had a cloudy type in white backgrounds. But found out it was hotspots in the phone that discolored the screen. I always tell people never the the same thing display more than 20 or 30 min shut off screen or goto something full screen to get rid of status bar icons. A phone is just like any other device or machine they do need periodic breaks too

any1 else think something about it?
i would like to get more ideas and opinions

u sure it's a permanent screen burn ?
the notification curtain is not fully opaque it shades the icons beneath it and that's all..

its not permanent but it is annoying,
takes 30secs of still image to burn and stop burning after another 30secs of displaying siffrent image on the same screen spot

i agree with you it is ANNOYING as hell!!! I returned mine 2 weeks ago not only because of this but also because i cannot see nor connect to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
Just 2 months prior top this the phone killed itself (not even 1 year old) and had to get a new PCB. LG if you are reading this, i want my money back.
Note to the people, please don't buy LG crap!

I've actually tested a lot of apps just like display tester pro..still believe it's HW issue that can't be fixed without screen replacement..how can this specific apk actually help with image retention? What exactly did you used?

It would help if you could provide us with some pictures of your phone.
I think it's a common issue with SuperAMOLED. I had a screen burned with Galaxy S top bar, where the battery icon was. You just have to live with it...
took some pics but its not very obvious on camera - guess i'll just live with it didnt realise it was a problem with super amoled screens tho!
I would return the phone to get a warranty-replacement.
Never heard of screen burn with AMOLED-screens before. I have my Omnia7 since November and there isn't the slightest hint of a screen-burn yet.

Go to Samsung Galaxy S i-9000 area and Search "Screen burn". Theres plenty of threads and posts about screen burn. Also Wikipedia confirms OLED displays burn in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_burn-in#Plasma_.26_LCD_.26_OLED

Oh...I just knew that blue colour will fade with time, not that it can burn in. But this happens when something like a logo is displayed for hours every day. I doubt that this effect is meant to happen with a phone display that is off most of the time and when it's switched on it displays a lot of different pictures and apps.
Hmm...I would definitely try to get a replacement -I won't accept a burned in screen.
Blimey this is like Plasma Display burn-in all over again....
Glad I have an HD7 then
Returning a phone for repair is so much hassle tho it can takes aggess and may even lose all my data on the phone (hmm unless latest update has that backup thingy) i'll leave it for now see if it gets anyworse! Other super amoled people beware!
Bought my Omnia 7 in germany and have also experienced a small form of burn in when I am surfing the web.
The 2 circles leave a burn in when I slide up the IE options bar. This fades away over time and is the same type of behaviour as on plasma TVs.
I wouldnt worry much about it if it fades away. Turn off your phone and check if the marks are still there! I am certain that they wont be!
But if they are ... get it fixed.
Hi, just a suggestion... Try to enter LCD test via samsung codes.. Search on this forum for samsung codes..
Yes, screen burn in is common with Super AMOLED screens. However, you shouldn't have a problem unless you leave your phone on (set to the highest brightness with a static image visible) for hours on end.
I've seen a large number of Galaxy S screens with imprinted icons on them, and the reason for that was because they were left on for hours.

I see you are on orange. Any warranty claim i have had with orange has resulted in a new handset being at my door the following morning. Pretty quick service.
I saw this on the Display Focus at my local AT&T. they have the demo mode going, so when it's not being payed with on top it always says Windows Phone and it got burned on.

Burn-in is actually the end results of some pixels faded more than others. So, yeah, blue color will easily have burn-in effect since it only lasts about 2000 hours.
I know that retuning the phone for repair will cause you wait for ages but there is not another way for it..So you should copy your private data in your laptop or any other storage device .So it will be kept safe with you...
Well i had the worst combination then because i had the blue theme setting and i decided to keep my brightness on full! so thats what caused it then!

Exactly. On my Captivate (Android), I found most of the wall papers on Android are blue themed. In early days of Nexus One, it was reported that using a red theme not only saves your blue pixels but also saves battery.
In comparison (2,000 hrs of Blue pixel life), modern plasma TVs typically has 80,000 to 100,000 hours of phospher life. So, AMOLED/OLED screen is way to easy to get burn in. The only saving grace is most ppl already move on to new phones well before all these panel life span issues show up.
I've uploaded some pics! One is not much use, i was amazed how microscopic my cheap webcam was!!!! but still it woulds seem the dark patch is growing and hmm i didnt know that about the blue pixels! wont be using that again!

Screen streaking/unevenness?

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else. Does your ET show (mostly) vertical streaking/unevenness when displaying a solid, light color? Is this something related to AMOLED, or is my ET defective?
Edit: I just realized this is dependent on screen brightness...the streaks are only apparent at the lowest brightnesses.
Thanks.
Screenshots would help others see what you're referring to.

I get this when my screen goes off and on

I have to mention that the first one i had, was like this, but it showed like a dark spot in the center of the screen, btw screenshots wouldn't show this problem because is actually the hardware" Screen" In this case.
So i went ahead and brought it to the Sprint Store where i bought it from, and asked for a replacement due to the Screen hardware defect, they kept *****ing at me telling me, that they have to keep it for a whole day, to do "Tests" Im like... well its a hardware issue and i have taken the phone and hardreset it, making the phone as if just out of the box, and showed them the problem again"btw the phone comes with a Gray and Green pure colored background images that you can show to them, that it isn't an Image that you had Altered" , and they can see that it is the screen, and its what i showed to them, and thats when i got my replacement, When i got this one, i saw it again, and it had a white spot... also had various streaks coming from the Top of the screen, went int he second day and got me another replacement, but before i left the store, i stayed about 30 minutes in there, testing the phone out, and downloading all the apps that i had in the phone before. Also Good way to notice this problems( defects ) is dimming the screen all the way, and changing the background to gray, which is a default wallpaper.
This screen didn't have any of the defects that previous ones had, so im a happy camper .
So now what i'd recomend if you can, is replacing/exchanging the phone until you get one with a decent screen.
I get this too when my brightness is turned down. It's most visible on grays. Like the background of the market. It only appears when the brightness is turned down low. There is also this app in the market called "screen test" which cycles through different solid and colored backgrounds. that if you did take it in you could show them that. This issue doesnt really bother me but I have TEP plus there is a one year manufactures warranty so if it gets worse I'm not worried about it.
I finally got around to taking a quick set of comparison pictures. Sorry for the poor quality, I took them quickly with my phone. I also tried to purposely take them out of focus, so moire patterns from the actual pixel grid wouldn't confuse things. I have a feeling this is how all *LED based displays are.
I use the app "Colors" to quickly get a solid patch of color. I encourage a few people to download it, and browse through a few colors (grayish or dark tones - light or bright colors aren't affected as much) and see if they have it. "Grr-ey", "Mighty Slate", "Kind Giant" are good ones to test with.
Things are much more noticeable when the brightness is set low.
Brightness manually set to minimum:

[Q] Should i take it for warranty? or is it normal?

hey there guys. am having multiple issues in a 1 week old Note 2 which i noticed very recently.
first issue being , strange fade outs near home button, (tried cleaning screen with everything from water to specs lens cleaner,it's a permanent thing..... and looks like it is under the glass )

}
Second issue is non-aligned fade outs on front cam and sensor
third issue is , there are few pixels on left side of screen that do not blend in with other black pixels around them(except for videos where color is similar to pull down menu on home screen).it doesn't move either.it's in a permanent location. it can't be seen under proper light and only appear on more or less lowest screen light setting with ambient light off.this issue however doesn't occur with any other color of video, they blend in perfectly.it's similar to note 1's black crush issue, but on a specific spot
sorry but this is the best pic my cam could get. you have to look very carefully
Last issue is, S pen doesn't work on lower right side of the screen. like on the very end in the corner. it works fine in other 3 corners.
I know i sound extremely paranoid.... but i love this device so much ! would love perfection. should i take it to service center? will be pretty darn hard to explain the issues though. and can i expect a replacement ? on the side note, i got it from India and no carrier.
Thank you for reading

Hey,
I dont have ANY sort of fade outs anywhere. You should definitely have it checked. As for the S pen....even mine doesnt work all the way down to the end on the lower right but does go to the end of corners of remaining 3.

First question, do you have a screen protector on? If you do that will explain everything.
Looks like a misaligned screen protector to me.

guess it's warranty time then
and no ... no screen guard is on.it's whitish cuz of moisture and oily hands, can't help it in India's climate and tired of wiping the screen every hour. but those fade outs are permanent thing.
i do plan on getting screen guards soon after taking it for warranty though.

Question edge bleeding at low brightness

Hello, tonight i was configuring my youtube app and i noticed very bad colors at the edge of the display, when the background is grey. I was in a complete dark room, the problem is most noticable when brightness is about 15%. And no, its not only the app. The bad colors are visible at a brightness from 0% to 50%.
Do you guys also have this problem?

The Mi 8 has it also, that is screen uniformity. It is hardware and it seems very common the last few years. I don't have it on my Oneplus 7 pro but it is also present on the Oneplus 8, Xiaomi Mi 9 etc.
Some folks say it is normal on oled but it isn't.
Why are the no problems with oled on Oneplus 7 pro, Samsung s10+?
I have same in low brightness don't worry.

so your unit doesnt have this issue?
i have the same problem, always visible when you have a dark(not black) background, note i had before 1 samsung s2,s4,a5 (the a5 when i was watching a movie in dark scene i could see a yellow brightness in one corner,it was awfull)and a tablet from the same manufacturer and all had the same probleme but at different level,my last Mi9t was parfect and screen didnt show that but my new F3 has it ,one side is clearer than the other one
As far as I know it is because of the AMOLED manufacturing tolerances, it seems to be really hard to get a perfect uniform display.
It shows at low brightness with grey screen especially.
Discussion also happend with the Mi 8 here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...moled-uniformity-issues-etc-for-mi-8.3843180/
Lol, I was just about to start a topic about this when I saw yours. Only dark gray backgrounds and top left is brighter then bottom right. Disappears at about 25% brightness. On the photo it seems green but not to the eye...
So if I send the phone back I'll most likely receive a new one with the same issue?

Lol, as u can see, my issue is in the same area, but mirrored.
I think, if u send the phone back, maybe u will get one with the same issue on diffrent corners. Only if u r lucky, u will get a good screen but then maybe the vibration motor starts crackling xD
I will keep my phone, cuz everything is fine for now
Well, yes, I'm a nitpicker really and there's always a small problem with a device it seems. I can't find anything else so I guess I'll settle for a small uniformaty of the screen. After all it's only with gray and in a dark surrounding. When watching a dark scene in a movie in inperceptable and maybe I can switch more elements to black using a custom rom (hope lineageOS will show up).
And maybe when there's a way to do DC dinning and not PWM it'll be better....

It is in general really hard to get a perfect display, be it on phones or on PC monitors.
Also TN and IPS panels show their weaknesses at "grey" colors, it makes the uniformity visible to the human eye.
Additionally trails and overshoot of moving objects on a grey background are most noticeable.
Not sure why "grey" is so devastating
I don't know. I'm from NL and here we have a lot of "grey areas" so guess I'll have to get used to it
Mine has a similar grey gradient visible at low brightness and solid colors, but it doesn't seem to be discernible in anything but settings. My old phone has a "perfect" oled though, so it's definitely possible.
Solid colors seems fine, or my eyes don't perceive it...
Probably the same case as processor cores: bins. Maybe they pay less for getting screens that are not 100% uniform?

Question Black bar issue

Hey guys, I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now. I started noticing it about a week ago. When I'm watching a youtube video at night for example or in dark environment on minumum brightness and pull the video down from the middle (when it shrinks the video itself and the screen gets gray on the edges) but don't close it, I can see a dark line where the status bar is. Seems that the youtube gray is perfect for the retention(?) to be seen. Does anyone else have the same problem or is it just me and should I ask for a repair or replacement? Sorry for the pictures, I took them with my old phone.
P.S. In case my explanation wasn't clear, when the yt video is on full screen, grab it and pull down and hold and you should see gray space around the video.
P.S.2. At first I thought it is a screen burn but after some research it appears that this issue is common on OP 8 Pro and is not image retention.
So is my phone faulty, should I book a repair or it's normal? Does anyone else have the problem? Tried changing to 60 fps but the bar is still there (

As the panel is made by Samsung, this is normal and it even appears even on the galaxy line flagships. It's a known tradeoff with having a hole punch and stems from the manufacturing limitation with their process.
Oh, I see. I've read that with the 9 series the problem is less persistent than the 8. Do you have the problem too? What's the chance that if I send the phone to repair the new display won't have it?
well that looks like the shadow that you can turn on and off in nova launcher, called "show shadow" but I'm not sure if you are using that.
Nope, I'm not. Also it doesn't make sense for it to display over other apps if it's the shadow. Anyways, I'm going to send the phone for repair.

I too have a faint row coming off the camera, it's alot less noticable compared to my 8 pro. There isn't any real way to deal with it as I read that someone RMA'd and had it replaced three times, all still had that "bar."
Is that woth the 9 Pro or 8 Pro, cuz I saw only one user of the 9 Pro complain about that bar. The problem is that I really don't want to wait a couple of weeks to get the phone back and don't want to risk the phone not being waterproof or arriving with any other issues. Is that woth the 9 Pro or 8 Pro, cuz I saw only one user of the 9 Pro complain about that bar. The problem is that I really don't want to wait a couple of weeks to get the phone back and don't want to risk the phone not being waterproof or arriving with any other issues. Was with the 8 pro supposedly, but still applicable to the 9 pro as it's a manufacturing limitation with all Samsung's OLED panels with hole punches. Some will be less noticable. OLED panels are not pressed and rolled like you see with LCDs. They are fabricated in ultra clean vacuum sealed environments similar to making computer chips employing lithographic techniques and methods in various stage of production.. as such they are subjected to the "Silicon" lottery and the quality varies widely between panels.
