Why does an AFTV2 broadcast an SSID at 5 Ghz Channel 36 - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed something really weird today when running Inssider. I was seeing an SSID being broadcast with often no name in 5Ghz band at Channel 36. After much head scratching, wandering around to see where the signal was strongest etc. I managed to figure out that it's coming from the AFTV2 - turn it off, dissapears, back on, it's back again. I also noticed that sometimes the SSID shows us as DIRECT-EU-FireTV_d33b.
So, questions would be - why on earth is the AFTV broadcasting an SSID, what's it for, and can you change the channel at least - I don't want it taking up one of the few non DFS channels.

Ah - I'd assumed it was Bluetooth - not WiFi. 5Ghz band seems odd to use as well since it's rubbish for getting through walls, cabinets etc.. Anyway, next question I guess would be - can you change the channel?

That's pretty horrible. How can they think it's OK to just take one of the few non-DFS 5Ghz channels and not give you an option to change it - that's rubbish!

AFTV2 confirmed same behavior, 5G Channel 36. This AP MAC address is duplicate of AFTV2 except for 2nd digit.
Wondering if I should move my NETGEAR Wireless AP away from the AFTV2. They are currently next to each other, interference?

WiFi Keeps Dropping/Disconnecting Through Second Router

First of all, I have internet from Time Warner Cable and it came with a router/modem all in one. Now that was initially set up and that works 100% perfectly with my SGS2. Since I have a weak WiFi signal upstairs in a couple of rooms, I decided to hook up an extra router that is set up as an access point. The second router is connected via a cat5e lan to lan to my main router (home is wired with cat5e connections).
Now on the second router, I have disabled DHCP since the main router is responsible for that. On the second router, I set up a different SSID first to test it out. All wired and wireless connections worked great through my laptop/Xbox 360, PS3. My SGS2 connected fine as well and worked.
Now the issue is that the SGS2 "drops" the WiFi after some time. Sometimes it happens after 5 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes, etc. Even with the SGS2 right next to the router it happens. Meanwhile, my laptop stays connected the whole time.
I can't seem to figure out what the issue is now. I've reset the second router a couple times and set it up all over fresh but it doesn't fix the problem. Seems to be a problem with my brother's Sensation as well. Is there something with Android and access points or going through a second router that causes issues? Any other settings I'm overlooking? SGS2 connected to the main router stays connected until I turn WiFi off. But to the access point, it drops out after some time.
FYI: Second router (access point) is running DD-WRT firmware.
If you need any other info, just ask. I'll be home from work in a couple hours. I've been messing with this for the last 2 weeks but nothing seems to work. Please help! Thanks.
Hmm thats very odd. Im running a similar setup as you, except my main and 2nd router connect via 5ghtz N.
Have you tried statically your phone with an IP address then modifying your main router (that gives DHCP) to reflect that IP is permanently assigned?
edit: to hard set your phone...settings-->wireless and network-->wifi settings, then menu key and advanced. Just fill in the IP and gateway info, and obviously use something in your DHCP subnet. You'll have to look at your DHCP subnet, but you'll probably use 255.255.255.224 as your mask, and use your gateway (your main router IP) as your DNS.

Try giving your phone a static IP from your main router. Also make sure that you adjust your phones wifi settings under advanced settings so that your phone stays connected to wifi during sleep. Hope that helps.

Well my phone is getting the same IP address each time, whether I connect to the main router's SSID or the second router's SSID. But I will try this static IP. One problem is that I don't know how to find out my DHCP range. There's nothing in the main router's settings about the range. The second router has an option to set the IP address range for DHCP but the main router doesn't. See attached image.
I'll try to set the static IP around what the IP addresses of other devices on the network are since I don't know the exact range. Let me know if I'm doing this wrong. Not sure what you meant by 255.255.255.224 there.
The static IP didn't make a difference. Still keeps disconnecting/dropping after some time. Meanwhile, the connection with the main router stays connected. Don't know what else I can do. Seems that my HP Touchpad running CM9 stays connected to the second router without dropping. Don't know what's different about that from my phone.

This might be completely off but I had a similar issue with my SII when connecting to 802.1x networks at my University. I downloaded this app called wifi fixer and it resolved the wifi connection drop for about 90% of the time. Give it a shot, it might do wonders for ya.

I tried it and it didn't work. I think it's something to do with DHCP or some other settings.

First you need to find out if your router is supported. According to the DD-WRT database, the 615 is, the 625 is not. But there are several revisions of that router, so you need to find out what revision you have. It should be on your label.
Router database
Then you need to decide whether you want a repeater, an access point, or client bridged. You can read the differences in the DD-WRT wiki found HERE
Then you need to find the best build to flash to your router. I suggest reading the overview of the 615 found HERE. Read the ENTIRE thread. If you flash the wrong version to your router, you WILL brick it.
Then flash the appropriate firmware, set it up, and youre done. Youre going to have to do some reading.
edit: I would also suggest downloading wifi analyzer on your phone and do a site survey of available channels in your house. Most likely you WILL have interference from neighbors. Youre going to want to hard set your channel to the least congested channel, either 1, 6, or 11. Once you get DD-WRT set up on your 615 you can do a site survey within the router as well.

The only reason to use one over the other is congestion. Thats it. And you want to use 1, 6, or 11 because the DIR615 has N capability, and you need a wifi primary channel to use N. Theres only 3 primary channels...1, 6, and 11.

I have actually done all that. The DIR-615 is an E1 version and I flashed the correct DD-WRT firmware on it. I followed a tutorial from the DD-WRT website to set it up as an access point as well. My laptop works perfectly with it. Just my phone keeps dropping the connection from it. My main router is on channel 11 and the second router is on channel 6. I also tried channel 1 but it didn't help.
I might just to try set it up as a second router on a different subnet than the first router and see if that helps. Going to try to follow this Youtube video and see how it goes.

Hhmm ok. Well your main router shouldn't have anything to do with it. When it drops does it re-aquire an IP and reconnect? Honestly if a reboot of the router doesn't fix it and your laptop doesn't have the same issue, its pointing to the phone.
Maybe a factory reset?

It reconnects when I unlock the phone. Sometimes I have to reset the Wifi on the phone. Have set the Wifi connection to never sleep. My brother's Sensation was doing this as well. I'll have to test it out on his phone and see. I'll probably reset my phone later today and see if that works.

N5X won't find 5MHz WiFi Networks

After updating to Android N my N5X won't find any 5GHz wifi network.
I have reflashed radio file, also tried different ROMs, etc. any ideas? I can confirm my 5GHz network is working as other devices can connect to it.

This can sometimes happen if the router chooses (or if you choose) a weird channel for the 5GHz band. I believe I had this problem when the 5 GHz band in my house was set to one of the channels towards the end of the spectrum, like channel 161 or 165. Let me know if this goes straight over your head but you're gonna have to log into your router and check things out.
The IP is usually something like 192.168.1.1, but you can check by running command prompt and typing ipconfig and looking for "default gateway". That IP address if your router's IP. Type that IP into your browser. God willing you have a separate router from your cable modem, go ahead and log into your router. If you don't know the username and password, ask someone who does. Flip over to the wireless section so you can play with the 5 GHz settings. If you live in a congested area like a city or a neighborhood, you should set your 5 GHz band to a channel width of either 40 MHz or 20 MHz. 80 will get you the best speeds but interference will step all over your performance, so if you have a lot of neighboring wifi networks, you won't see any gains. As for choosing a channel, you can choose one yourself (which is what I usually do after taking a survey of my house to find the best channel) or leave it on auto. Auto will select what it thinks the best channel is and sometimes it might select a channel that makes some devices unhappy. Again, this tends to be the higher channels like 153-165 in my house with some devices.

available channels on my router 36, 40, 44 and 48. none does the charm, also programs like wifi analyser won't detect any 5GHz network. Thanks anyways, any other ideas?

I'm having some problems with overlapping channels in my area. Is there any way to change the wifi channel Fire Stick (2nd gen) uses from Channel 1? Would be nice to move it to 6 or 11. Same thing with the 5ghz band as well but the 2.4ghz band worries me the most because I have a lot of devices that rely on it.

(This is the result of flooding an enthusiast community with product support and "piracy not working, what now " questions, because novice bought box with the label "free" on it - also the result of depending on a product blogger and step by step tutorials to find your way around, and fleeing from a "community" as soon as your problems are "solved"...)
Here is your answer. You change Wifi channels in your router, not in the end device.
If your router hides this option from you, get a different router. Its a commonplace feature in even the cheapest routers and also in most ISP routers for that matter.
It's also worth pointing out that the AFTV2... Possibly the AFTS2? Does NOT like anything above Channel 48 (a/n/ac @5Ghz).
e.g. You can only use the lowest bands (Ch's 36 - 48), if you want it to work.
Again you will need to adjust this from the Router / MODEM!
Fire devices do broadcast WiFi
This is a legit question (some dismissed it, assuming the original post was referring to the network the device was receiving from). The Firestick/FireTV broadcasts a "Hidden" Wi-Fi network. It is used for the remote, I believe. Mine is on channel 11 and, yes, it would be nice change it. I am connecting to someone else's router (also 11) and do not have permission to change there.

I'm facing the same issue as there is no solution. It's pretty frustrating because I have serious interference.
Fire Stick WiFi Hidden SSID
Hi,
I have come across the same issue and unfortunately do not have any answers, only more information. My daughter has a Fire Stick connected to a Virgin Media broadband / WiFi router (ARRIS).
The router's 2.4GHz primary SSID channel was configured to 11 (20MHz). The Fire Stick was broadcasting a hidden SSID on channel 11 at about the same power level.
I switched the router to channel 1. The Fire Stick changed the channel that the hidden SSID is broadcast on to channel 1 at the same time (pretty much).
I can only conclude that the Fire Stick broadcasts its hidden SSID on the same channel as the one that it is using for its WiFI connection to an access point / router.
I suspect that this is due to a limitation in the wireless electronics of the Fire Stick.
I cannot find any Fire Stick configuration to change its WiFi channel.

Can we just keep this account disabled?
I believe this is because the way they setup WiFi direct using the same chip as the regular WiFi. It's only capable of using one channel at a time. Roku does this also.

Some 5Ghz WiFi are not visible

Hello everyone I have an LG G7 ThinQ model number LM-G710EMW,
Now my phone started doing this thing where it wont detect and if it detects it wont connect to SOME 5Ghz AP's.
At first I noticed this on my Home Router, a TP-Link Archer C20 AC, and I thought it was the router so I factory reset it, to no dice.
Then I thought It was the network settings in my phone and I did a reset on those, to still no dice, finally I was like it must be the phone, and I factory reseted my phone, and YET IT DIDNT CONNECT.
A few days later I was visiting my parents house and they have this CHEAP NEXT 5Ghz Router, and it did connect to that one, I was like AHA, IT IS MY ROUTER. That same day I configured a UniFi AC LR AP (a $100 AP) and on that one IT DID NOT CONNECT NOR DISCOVERED THE 5GHZ SSID.
So its not my router.
I have no issues with 2.4Ghz Routers or AP's.
Any ideas?
Could be a channel issue. I've run into this in the past with other phones, where my router would select certain channels depending on the surrounding wireless neighborhood. Turns out it didn't like some channels, especially ones towards the higher end of the spectrum (Channels 161, 165). Perhaps that's the problem. If you're comfortable, log into your router at home and see what the channel width is set to (20, 40, or 80 MHz) and then take a look at which channel (or channel range, depending on the width of said channel) it's set to (most likely Auto). The router chooses channels based on how busy the the neighborhood is. So if you have a lot of neighbors with WiFi networks of their own, it'll try to choose a channel that they aren't using to mitigate interference. Select a channel or channel range that's highlighted in this picture. And I know it says North America, but I believe Europe and Japan use the same channels.

This is optimal in my experience. The 2.4 GHz band is super crowded, so having it set to a channel width of 20 MHz is the only real option. 5 GHz at 40 MHz is good, if you have a lot of neighbors that also have WiFi, this is the best channel width to select for for performance without your bandwidth being stepped on by nearby 5 GHz networks on the same channel.
Because you're using a 40 MHz channel width on your 5 GHz SSID, it takes up two channels, as illustrated in the picture I posted in my previous comment. Some routers don't go up to channel 165, so your only real choices here are 36-40, 44-48, 149-153, and 157,161. You want to try to select a channel that isn't in use by neighboring WiFi networks. two WiFi networks on the same channel can lead to worse wireless performance. The router tries to do this automatically but sometimes will select channels that certain devices are fussy about. Some routers can give you a site survey and show you the other channels in use in the area of your home. If yours doesn't do this, you can download any number of apps to survey the wireless networks in your area instead. Basically, try changing the channel selection to a different choice and see if your phone can connect.

Howto fix this?
You need to dial *#546368#*710# in order to enter into engineering menu.
After this follow Field Test-WiFi Test-Ota Settings. Press Disable then Enable.
Now switch on wifi and 5ghz should be available.

HELP! Wifi 5GHz conected without internet

I just bought a new tab s4, and I can not connect it to the 5ghz wifi network. It connects, but says connected without internet. The 2.4GHz network connects perfectly.

HI peep's mine is connected to 5 GHz and it’s working flawlessly, it’s showing a connected speed of 866MBPS!
Quick questions, did you try a reboot router and Tab S4 once connected to 5GHZ ?
Also are you using separate WPA2 PSK key ?
As some routers can’t handle separate keys, keep the Wi-Fi key same for both channels i.e 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ!
Does it get ip address from the router/dhcp server you have?
I don't have access to a 5Ghz wifi right now. Next week I'll try the tablet and I'll try everything you said. If the new tablet has the same problem of course, I hope it goes well.

I have the same problem and I noticed that it came with the Anroid Pie update! 2,4G is working fine in my S4.
I have another tablet Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition and 5G Wifi is working flawlessly.
Might it be software issue in Android 9?

My Tab S4 was ,finally, updated to Android 9. 5GHz working fine. Both 5GHz and 2.4GHz working fine...
All good here...
I got one coming in the mail and will report back on my success but if you don't get internet trying setting your dns manually to Google's public one for testing. 8.8.8.8 Could also be related to the channel the router is using for 5ghz.

Okay, so I got a new tab s4, and I have the same problem. At the second floor of my house, I don't connect to the 5Ghz wifi. I have separated bands. I tried changing the channel... I don't know what else try.

5GHz WiFi has less range than 2.4GHz, maybe the signal strength is not enough at the second level. Use the lowest frequency band available, move the base unit to a place less obstructed etc. This does not sound like a device issue.

Yeah, I know, the device issue is that all my other phones, computers and devices are able to connect to the wifi. I enabled the smart wifi and it looks like it's going better, the tablet is able to get better download speed.
