Capacitive Buttons dimming? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I've had my White / Silver HTC One for a few days now and it was bought directly from HTC UK.
I really like the phone but I've noticed that the back and recent keys don't light up as bright as when I first used the phone. Over the course of the week the buttons are getting dimmer.
Has anyone else noticed or have this issue?

I noticed that with my phone too...until I found out the buttons vary brightness with the ambient light just like the screen does. When the screen is dim the buttons will be dim and when the screen is bright the buttons will be bright.

light sensor, never dims

when set to auto adjust, the brightness goes up when light levels increase. fine.
when light levels are low or darkness, they never seem to dim back to low level.
they only dim back if i switch the screen off/on
do i have fault or is the a feature?
Iv heard if you have a screen cover on teh front it can cause problems. I have the zagg invisible sheild, and dont have a problem with it.
i have the same problem... and i canot find a aplication to set up how much light to give at display for each value it gets from light sensor... something like in windows mobile...the autoadjust is crap it hurts my eyes in a totaly black room
The official HTC screen protectors have holes in them where the sensors are located. There's a light sensor to adjust the screen brightness, and the proximity sensor which turns off the screen when the phone is next to your face on a call. You can't see them by looking at the phone alone, but they're there at the top of the phone screen, near the speaker.

Amoled black isn't as black as we thought?

I've found out, that the Amoled can't display perfect black. I tried the desktop clock thing, the blackle Google page (scrolled to black only area), and I made a photo in PhotoShop completely black and open it up in gallery.
What I noticed is, that the screen still is displaying something when it should be black. This is very easy to see if you put the phone to sleep when displaying such black.
What am I missing? Doesn't the Amoled completely turn of a pixel that is black? Can someone try to replicate this?
Do you think it's possible that I have an lcd desire and just don't know it?

I have also a Hero (with lcd display) and black on my Desire is "more black" than Hero's
For me it's ok
If you look at LCD screens through a circular polarisation filter you'll sometimes see coloured patterns on it, or it will get completely filtered out at a certain angle. To the best of my knowledge, OLEDs don't emit polarised light, so if you've been to see Avatar or another movie in Real3D and walked away with the glasses then you can use them as an LCD detector...
(The blacking out effect works as a cool CSI-esque monitor dust detector)
No disrespect, but... who cares???
So the blacks are not as deep as say, a Kuro plasma. This is a smartphone, not a home theater tv.

no disrespect but,...
well real black "off pixel" don't use power so all the people who care about batterylife might care...

I don't think they do emit light on blacks. I have noticed that in a completely dark room I can't see blacks on my Desire at all, it emits no visual light. Maybe the black you were testing isn't pure black.

Couldn't help myself

I do agree that it is much better than any lcd. BUT black should be no light at all. When you turn off the screen when all the pixels are supposed to be off, you see a change. You can also see the outline of the screen when it is in any of the previously mentioned methods of darkness.

I did the following test :
- found a room where I could be in complete darkness
- used the following enclosed file (a pure RGB=(0,0,0) 800x480 png file) and displayed it fullscreen on my phone.
- use the palm of a hand to cover the 4 lit buttons
- the screen is pretty damn BLACK ! (an LCD screen, next to it, also displaying black pixels, would look like a torchlight)
- After a minute or so, the eyes getting used to the darkness, I could very slightly see the screen. I don't know how the phone is built, but I'm guessing it's a light "leak" coming from the LED(s) of the 4 buttons.
I tried this procedure at various brightness settings (from min to max) : the remaining light coming from the screen did not change.
Is there a mod to kill the buttons backlight ?
It is possible to kill the backlights, but have not tried it myself.

Ok, switched off the buttons backlight thx to Flaggie. The screen indeed still emits some light when displaying a full screen black picture. Strange.
It would be interesting to get an explanation from HTC about this, but i'm pretty sure it pointless hoping they would reply to such a question. I'll give it a try...
Perhaps you hae one of those new Desire models with a LCD screen?
No, I bought it the day it came out. Try out on your own. The test I detailed is pretty straight forward...

That is what I thought at first, but than the amount of light on dark would change when you change the brightness.
I want to know what HTC has to say about this.
PS: I bought my phone in June.

OMG does any of you know how a led screen works? lol Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode its name clearly states that the pixels are self-illuminating so clearly unless the screen is of the display is always going to give some light off
It is actually the other way around. They are self emitting, they can turn off. LCDs, however have a backlight, which doesn't turn off, so some light still passes through.

OLED can havae infinate contrast ratios. I have a cowon s9, it has an OLED screen and in a pitch black room you cannot tell it's on. The desire does emit some light even on true black :-/

OMG please read the Wikipedia article...
Unlike over saturated colors and Pentile jagginess which are clearly visible and to some point distracting (at least to me) this seem like pure academic issue, since it can be visible only in total darkness and even then it is not visible unless screen is completely black.
What would be practical purpose in looking at black screen in darkness?

I agree. This is an academic issue, but aren't you a bit disturbed by the fact that there has been soo much talk about this oled screen and its pure black, and it was all a lie?
I think the problem might be in the image to screen processing where it gets converted to the pentile matrix(and over saturated).

Backlight bleed / uniformity issues

I have noticed some slight flaws with my HTC One X
Firstly, when the backlight is on maximum (which happens when you first boot-up the phone) and shows a black screen, I can see some backlight bleeding at the bottom. It looks a bit greenish in one corner and also a bit further along the bottom.
Also, on a full white screen, the bottom is a bit more yellow than the rest of the image. This can be seen on the mail application (or gmail) for example.
I noticed that my applying slight pressure to the casing, that I can reduce the backlight bleed a bit. It also seems to reducing after a few heat-up / cool-down cycles. However the slight uniformity issue from top to bottom doesn't seem to be changing.
Has anyone else noticed this? I must emphasise it is slight, and that the backlight bleed is near invisible if the display is on auto-brightness and you are in a normally lit room.

Dude the below backlight bleeding is from the LEDs of the buttons
Same thing with DHD and O2X...

Yeah I have seen what you mean in previous handsets. But in this case it really is the screen. When you boot the phone up, it goes black on full brightness for a few seconds without the LEDs for the buttons

I checked it with a pure black background, same I used for my Galaxy S2.
I had 3 spots below, and when the leds went out I had no spots at all.
I have now checked 3 other HTC One X handsets, and they are all practically identical in terms of uniformity on an all white screen. They are all more yellow towards the bottom of the screen. That doesn't mean every One X handset is like that, but clearly there isn't much point in me swapping it out.
Funnily enough I also had that with the Evo 3D handset as well although it was even more obvious on that one.
These kinds of imperfections seems a price of having a laminated screen ie: glue, iPhone4/4s and iPad3 have similar habbits
Mine has about 6 tiny little lights on the bottom of the display...this is not normal. At least I hope not. They are always on so they can't be related to he touch button?

Do you have a carrier phone? When mine boots up it's 10K lumens of white to the point it'll clearly light up a dark room. That and the HTC strum at max volume drive me crazy. Never reboot your phone in a crowd unless you want to be stared at.

Same here...walked out of the store and right back in...second phone has same problem but screen is better overall...really annoying seeing those lights at the bottom of the screen though...it is only noticeable on lighter color screens...
Anyone else got this??

I also have this issue. Is this normal, or do most One X's not have this problem/issue/feature?

Backlight Bleed

Curious as to how many of you have backlight bleed?
Download the backlight bleed app from the Market, set brightness to 100%, go into a dark room and check for bleed.
The first Ace 2 I had had backlight bleed under the 'Samsung' lettering at the top of the display. I went to the store and switched it out, but the replacement device also had the backlight bleed in the exact same place.
Yes, I have a tiny bit of bleed. But nothing to lose sleep over given that this is a cheap phone.

What is backlight bleed?
Looks like this is wide spread. Samsung's fault... Case closed.

Bleed
May I ask how many of you have backlight bleed (yellowish tint when the screen is black with brightnes set to max or at least a higher value) ?
I noticed on boot that my ace 2 has a yellow tint at the top of the scren (under the Samsung logo) and there is a little bleed on the top-left edge.
I attached a photo from top of the screen (sorry for low quality I made with my laptops webcam), here you can clearly see the yellow tint under samsung logo.

HTC One M8 backlight bleeding problem?

I got my HTC One recently (last Friday) and it was a perfect phone! no problems whatsoever...
Yesterday i was playing with the phone with a colourful background wallpaper from HTC and i noticed light bleeding from the top (hold it in a angle and you can see a light bar shine through like this:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/at...een-issues-uploadfromtaptalk1367129491252.jpg
It isn't that big of a deal but for a phone that costs over 500 euro's here in my country.. you expect that it is build properly and backlight bleeding on a phone at this price!?
I compared 4 HTC's in the store and they all got the same problem
GPe dims the edges of the screen, so it's harder to notice if it's there. I haven't ran sense in a while so I can't tell either, but I can't notice this light bar effect on my phone either. So it may just be that batch of phones.

Got it in in my bottom right corner... very minimal though
Wow, that's massively anal lol.
mine was the whole top screen.. but it doesn't matter, that's just HTC right..? They're known for the screen bleeding, haha..
I've been having this issue on the bottom of the display. It makes the nav buttons look funny and full-screen content is washed out.

Here's mine. Italian H3g branded:
That light bleed above is probably a bit excessive bit you guys have to realize that all LCD screens are going to have some light bleed. You can usually make it less noticeable by using a lower brightness setting. If you are really anal about the slightest amount of bleed you should really be looking into phones with AMOLED displays. That said, if the light bleed is washing out the nav bar at reasonable brightness settings you should try to get it fixed or replaced.
My M8 has some bleed on the top left corner at normal brightness and I'll notice it across the entire top if I go full brightness in a dark room. At normal brightness it doesn't bother me at all.
