Considering buying an M5. Sudden death?, Performance? - Sony Xperia M5

I'm considering buying an M5. How likely it is that the phone could fail on me? (ie suffer from sudden death?) The model I'd be getting is the E5606. Is that problem model specific or a generalized problem?
Also, how good is the performance? Has its score and overall performance improved with updates? (Like the 5.1 update). Anyone with gaming experience on it (and emulators).
Would you recommend it? (anyways my other options are C5>C4>M4 (money... sigh) so this is likely my best option)

Dude, keep away from this device and save your money. I bought an X5 Compact and M5, around two months ago. X5C suddenly died after OTA update. Sony told motherboard was died and accepted my refund request for it. now, I'm waiting for the payment. M5 had a back camera focus problem and replaced a day after my purchase.. The new M5 now has front camera ticking sound problem. Sony customer care says it's pretty normal but the local Sony store staff says it's not. They also told me that some customers had got replacement for their phones for the same issue. I have compared my M5 with the demo device at the store. The demo devices does not have the same problem! I'll do whatever I can to return it back to Sony and to get a refund for it. I will never buy a Sony phone again!

I have m5 dual
It's really good ?

Thank you both, so after reading even more (found another thread kinda similar), and considering Sony's/My Company's service center is actually good/decent (My brother had a problem with an M2 and got it changed in no time, hasn't had any problem yet) I guess I'll go for it this week.

Yup. Have it since Wednesday last week (8 days so far) and I have had no problems. It's a white E5606. It really is an excellent device.

Phone fixed

Hi,
I sent my phone to HTC for repair as the screen was yellow and had poor battery life
they changed the screen and the battery and its amazing now
there are no yellow spots and it works like a charm
the battery lasts 1.50 days dispite heavy use
for those having issues please send it to HTC.
If u send it back to your retailer for an exchange u are not guaranteed to get a phone without an issue, screen especially whereas sending the phone to HTC they make sure there are no issues after a repair they have done a good job and Im really happy with the phone now
8 years I buy HTC phones and have very good experience with them.
Only once I had a issue with my phone, they picked up and returned the machine fixed in 3 days.
htc will fix/replace your device if it has yellow spots?
100% its called Mura. Tell them and they will replace the lcd and u wont face the issue ever again as it s a known issue
Mine had this issue mainly and the new screen rocks
they are easier to deal with then apple... i will never buy another apple product mainly because of their customer service...

Thats odd, I had an ipod touch a few years back and my experience at the time was really positive. I had a problem and scheduled a visit online, went down to the local mall and gave it to them, they swapped it out for me. I've never had that good of an experience with anything else I own. Of course, that was the only new apple product I've ever had, so maybe regular apple users have a different experience, dunno.
I also have sent my HTC off for repairs (to some place in houston). It wasn't the screen, I had a problem with my mobile data that all but stopped working indoors and barely worked outdoors. I'll see how that goes. They did tell me that if they need any parts, it will cost me $20 because my One X is from france, whatever that means. Its really sad though, I don't really have any other usable android devices at the moment so I'm stuck using my work's blackberry while I wait. I hate that thing, I feel like i've gone back to the 90's.
That's very strange they ask $ 20 for it because HTC warrantee is worldwide.
The phone they fixed for me that time was a HTC Artemis P3300 from the US and I live in Holland. They didn't charge anything.

Screenshot of the usage and display time please. Otherwise I think you have the same battery everyone else has...
Also Stock unrooted phone I believe? If so can perfectly compare with my usage.

Yeah, they said because I live in the US and I purchased a phone from france and the repair place is in the US they would need to special order parts. Who knows. I'm actually a little concerned since they mistyped my email address (luckily I got the email anyway since I own the domain) on the rma info and even though they received the device on wednesday (according to the post office), there have been no updates to the website that they've received or are repairing it. So... I'll have to call them again and see what happened.
There is something to be said to buying devices directly from a local carrier.

I sent mine off to HTC too in the UK. They picked it up on Wednesday, Thursday evening it was showing as device received on their repair tracking.
Today afternoon it is showing as in repair.... :\ hopefully i get it middle of this week as i have no phone to use whatsoever. hopefully they will fix my yellow spot, i think the gorilla glass was not sitting properly on the LCD. as when i pressed it slightly it was gone.

Better luck than me... My phone was delivered on the 13th but never made it to 'received'. I now have an escalation ticket into HTC to find it. It took a few calls to them for them to even care that my phone was missing, they just kept saying that the repair place was probably behind. I then had to call them for an escalation ticket, then had to call a few days later to re-do the escalation ticket because the last guy didn't do it properly, then a call a few days later to get someone assigned to the escalation ticket. I'm now at the few days mark again, so I'll have to call again on monday and can hardly wait to hear the response this time.
I couldn't use the blackberry any longer, so I spent the other night screwing with my old captivate to at least get it working again so I'm not living in the dark ages anymore.
So, after a bunch more calls back and forth, they finally found my phone. At which point it sat for a couple more weeks while they ordered parts. Then they called back with the bad news. Apparently they can't order the parts because it's an international phone and due to copyright laws (supposedly) they can't ship the parts it needs overseas. The only options are to 1) return the phone, 2) send the phone to HTC France or 3) Replace the phone with an AT&T One-X. Obviously #1 is out. #3 isn't a great choice either, because the AT&T isn't as good as the International version, and so I discussed #2 with them. #2 apparently is only an option if I have a French shipping address, which obviously I don't. So, I'm pretty much out of options.
I think I may just take them up on replacing it with the AT&T one, and since it's new, I'll just ebay it and take the money to -mostly- pay for the S3. I really liked the One-x, but I don't want the limitations it already has (SD & Battery) combined with the more severe limitations of the AT&T version (dual core, 16gb storage - I can't use LTE so that's not a benefit).
Luckily my captivate has been holding up during this whole fiasco, but It's really on it's last legs.

It happened to someone else too. It's not parts, it's this...

This makes sense but not for the reasons given. The U.S. One X's have the "app picker" disabled; users have to pre-set an event in settings for a single action to occur when clicking on a link in an app. Those sold outside the U.S. present a list of apps to choose from each time you click on a link just as every other Android device. Making sure the U.S. versions didn't have this feature enabled therefore violating Apple's patent is what held them up at customs. HTC U.S. restoring that feature, even on an international device, would be in violation of the patent. So if they had to replace the motherboard they couldn't load the international s/w on it and they have no alternative ROM with the feature disabled that runs on Teg3.

Great, thanks for that explanation. I didn't really understand and I don't think the HTC guy knew or was able to explain it either.

Goodbye Motorola

So, this is one of the post where a "user" rants!
Well, I am a software engineer, bought a defy this august thinking that it will be a cool experience after samsung galaxy ace got messed in rain.
I needed something robust. Well, then i invested in defy.
Phone went fine till september when it started giving issue with data cable, never detected my PC. 22nd October i gave it to service center.
Amazingly they give it to me after 2 months on 13 december, Well, better late than never as they say. I happily went back with my phone. Next day in office phone starts rebooting at random and my 3g signal just looks like barely coming in. Tested sim card on a galaxy and network was good. After a lot of research turns out that hardware is faulty, though earlier my phone used to be amazing at 3g.
While checking hardware turns out to be IMEI is different than what i gave and i was not even notified when receiving. Great move. Never mind, called back customer care again and they ask for minimum 20+ days time. Which is again great.
Thought of selling it to shop for atleast 60 USD or roughly 3000 INR. Bought it for 13000 INR. The shopkeeper says that box and bill has a different IMEI and he cant buy it for me, unless its free.
Just dropped motorola a mail
"So, here is my introduction.
I am a customer who buys a defy in august. A month later the usb starts giving an issue, in october i give it to service center, and in december first week i get it back. 2 months? really? and when i take it back to home, turns out that IMEI is different, and my phone just randomly reboots now. Alright, you guys gonna fix.. but well guess what, Service says 20+ days expected time... really? After all this i really wanted to go for a consumer court case, but i really pity how the things are being handled. You want my IMEI.. but which IMEI? thanks to you guys i have TWO IMEIs .. Point of my mail is not to get a solution, coz after all these months i know motorola wont have a solution for me. But Just saying that stay this way and whatever is left of in India .. of present or the future.. none willl ever trust motorola. Know the worst thing? I cant even sell my phone as my box and bill has a different IMEI. Thanks a lot motorola."
I have all valid ground to sue them, but dont want to. Rather i cant. I dont have time to get into this, as i start at morning 8 for office and its usually late when im back. Instead of getting 13000 Rs handset refunded, while loosing thousands a day by not being involved in office doesnt sound fair. Rather taking it as an "accident" that i stumbled across motorola.
Purpose of mail : NOTHING...
Just felt like ranting a bit. Nothing more, am right now sitting in my room with a sony xperia J. Nice display and good battery (though not amazing hardware but am an adventurer, not a power user, I need battery). For performance i use my laptop
While the time i was here in defy community it was good. Enjoyed a lot of custom roms. Quarx's and walter79's work always amazed me.
Anyways, time to switch to xperia community now.
Seems unbelievable that you got two faulty devices in a row... Me and my brother have both got DEFY+'s and both are working perfectly fine (never had battery drops on any ROM, come alone some bigger failure). So... I don't know, I'm just sorry that you had such a bad experience when Moto's are one of the most endurable phones (not talking just about the DEFY's now). In my experience and knowledge they are at least.
Oh, nevermind, I don't want to turn this into a Moto-fans vs others thread, just saying
I'm glad that you've enjoyed our community!
yeah, quite unlucky of me, but more bad was the service they gave to me. Got defy plus after a lot of research and reviews from actual owners. But seriously, motorola needs to learn. If the thing doesn't get sold, i can use it as a navigator (doesnt reboot when data is off) and fix it on my motorcycle.
It's so unlucky man. Because Defy is such a 'slave' mobile phone that you can put it to hell and can see it's still working. I'm using Defy for more than 1 year now and you don't know how roughly I'm using it. I'm from the southern part of India and you can guess the lifestyle here. This mobile has survived the dusty climate of Tamil Nadu, the pouring monsoon of Kerala and my software experiments with this poor soul, oh my god if not Defy, it would have screamed! I have tested every custom ROMs available for Defy here and it hasn't shown any rejection to any of them whatsoever. No problems with any of the hardware including speakers, display etc. In fact I'm going to try another ROM just after posting this. :cyclops: It is such a reliable machine and what happened to you may be one in a million.
well, all I want to say I would to love to take up your case against the company
I'll take up this one for free just for you all you need to do is sit back and give me the details i'll handle rest of it
P.S: I'll take 40% of of the compensation awarded
This thread goes to nowhere.

It is. Do it.
I honestly couldn't recommend 100% right now as there are a few problems I've yet to solve, 4G connectivity and the flakey nature of the wifi/3G data - when it works it's great but at random times it just freezes which is really frustrating.

Yeah, I had bought one from coolicool online store last week. I am looking for getting my p8000 and judge if worth to buy it
I wouldn't buy one. Mine has the issue where the screen just starts to flash continuously and never recovers. If you then reboot the handset it gets stuck in a loop. The only way to get it working again is to reflash the firmware. It's rubbish, save your money or spend it else where.
I had that screen flashing issue once but seems to be ok on the 20150815 firmware(so far!)
I'm on day four with mine and it just works. No problems at all. Even came rooted, just ran SuperSu and everything was good.
It's a bit big and heavy, but amazing performance for the prize (came from a LG G2)
Had mine for about 3 weeks now and to be totally honest, it's great. Does everything I need it to. Great 4G on 'Tesco' UK, great WiFi, great camera, rugged build and tough screen glass (dropped it 4 times on hard floors and still all OK with no scratches)
For the price (£110) I don't think that anyone could possibly complain. To buy a better known make of this caliber, and with the features it has, would cost nigh on £600-700. People that are complaining should probably go and buy a phone for 4 times as much. In my opinion, a brilliant phone for the money. Oh! and the battery lasts for ages, at least 2 days without charge if you don't go silly with the apps.
I may have been one of the lucky ones and got a good one. I also had the screen flashing on start up, but anyone can see that that is an initiation test run. Bear with it and press the right buttons, ,and all is OK after that.
Had mine just over 2 weeks and certainly agree that at this price point we can't complain too much, just wish my wifi was more stable - must just be my phone though as most of you seem to be ok on that front.

Should I buy this or not?

Hi,
After comparing several phones, I am interested in buying Sony Xperia M5 phone.
However, I came across several comments on different websites about a "Battery Lock" issue where the phone shuts down itself often.
Now I am confused whether to go for this phone or not.
Is there anyway that I can identify whether the unit which I am buying suffers from this issue or not?
I really love this phone's design and specs, but worried after hearing this issue.
Hi! I suggest to think twice in buying this phone.
Theres the battery lock issue that all the devices made in 2015 has.
Theres no current custom development because it has a mediatek processor inside.
With the price that this has you could get another device with same specs (I already saw the LG G4).
Thats what I regret for now. Most the battery issue than the others. Because it is a great phone with awesome specs and waterproof with a great camera.
I bought my M5 in Germany in February and i haven't face any random reboots i don't use mobile network so mush and the coverage here is good so maybe it's that i will try the test i saw on youtube to see if my phone is suffering battery lock.I like the phone qs it is for now i don look much for development or custom rom in near future, but this is Sony guys, sony always gets custom roms, doesn't matter which chipset it has.For now i'm satisfied, the only thing i don't like is heating up,but not as much as my previous smartphone acer e700 and even when M5 heats up if you leave it on the table for 5 min. it will cool down to its normal temperature. But you don't have to take my word for it right away you can wait for more replies and then decide.

I agree completely. The only downside for me is the lack of custom development. Hopefully in the future enough people will get this so we can get Cyanogen mod or something
If you plan to buy now, it's very likely to be a unit manufactured in 2016 (you can also check this in the identification sticker that resides inside SIM Card/SD Card slot). Until now I never saw a single report of a 2016 unit having battery lock issue, mine for example is also made in 2016 and I never experienced a single battery lock, not even when doing the official testing procedure. Also, depending of where you live, you can get a free replacement if you go to the Service Center in case you have a unit with Battery Lock issue...
And about custom ROM development, I never believed I would say that but.... it's not Mediatek fault this time (like with their past SoCs where little to no source code was available), if you go to Sony's Developer World, the source code for Xperia M5 is published and available, it's just a matter of getting developers interested into developing to Helio X10 based devices. Another factor to take into account is that there's very few Android devices based on Helio X10 available, so, there's little to no code "reference", unlikely a Qualcomm-based device (there's a lot of Snapdragon-based devices out there, many things can be shared between them code-wise)...

It's right after the model number, like the photo from this user at Sony Forums. The imprint is in Year/Week format, which I believe was printed incorrectly on this user's unit (we're nowhere near week 53 of 2016). On mine I have 16W04, for comparison...
mine is 16w05 thats good then and it passed the test so my phone is most likely without battery lock issue.thanks

I'm in need of a gaming phone ASAP & want the 865 chip on it. The ROG phone 3 may take another 2 months I can't wait.
Don't want the ROG phone 2 cos it's already old - I feel.
I settled on this but I got negative vibes from 3s users most especially software related like patches and major updates (A10).
With your post, it seems ZTE doesn't care about support.
That has put me off.

If it works, it's a decent phone. My phone's flash memory went bad somehow, and after that I got an lg g8 on ebay + a controller, and besides the lower refresh rate it was a better experience overall. And yes, from the experience I had, Nubia sucks for support.

So just an update, I actually got my fixed phone today in the mail, from Nubia. I started the RMA process in November 2019, paid to have it fixed in January, and received it today 4/14/2020. I had no notification that I was getting it in the mail, the last time they responded back to me was late March, saying Ill be notified when it's fixed.
Ironic since I posted this yesterday.
Unfortunate, but In all fairness look what's been going on these past 3 months, the world has been at war with the first pandemic in modern history, things are moving a little slow...
