Dark photos using flash - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to take a picture earlier today with the flash using the standard Google camera and the picture was almost completely black.
I restarted the phone and it's still the same. All pictures I take with flash are almost completely black.
Im on build MTC19T running stock marshmallow.
Anyone else have a similar issue

Yes! Finally someone with the same issue. I recorded my n5x while taking a video using my n5 and I'm going to see if I can upload it.
You'll be surprised at what the flash looks like. The first initial flash is fine but the second one is at like 1/4 the brightness and doesn't seem timed right. I called Google and they said to factory reset the phone and if it still occurs they'll send me a new one.
Like I really have time to backup everything and reset and send out the phone and get another.
As far as I'm concerned it's a problem with the software. I'm 100% on stock, not rooted and nothing helps. It does randomly work maybe 20% of the time. And it has nothing to do with rebooting.
I can't upload a video but I did attach a similar pic i took using the flash.

I got same problem with third party camera apps. But everything is fine with Google Camera. Be sure that you got latest vendor.img.

I'm using the stock camera unrooted and it's constantly happening. Look at the link to the video on the tube that shows the flash issue.

Upload to Google Drive or YouTube. Also i can confirm this with third party apps.

Just search:

Dang video isn't working.
OR go here but copy the link and get rid of the space between the https and the colon.

This is insane. ADD the letter s after http. For some reason it's showing it on my edit but not when I submit. I don't know what's happening anymore. I feel I'm becoming more dumb with smart phones and technology and I'm an f-ing engineer.

I'm just wondering if this is a fault that's developed after one of the marshmallow updates or one that's been there since I got the phone.
Unfortunately I don't think I've used the flash untill now.
Just glad I'm not the only one with the issue.
Unfortunately I did not purchase my phone from the playstore but brand new and unopened from eBay for £205
I have registered with LG for manufacturers warranty. I will ask them if it's a software or hardware fault

Did u have any luck looking at my video?
I get an error trying to on xda but it does play fine if u just go to YouTube.
Also same here. I don't know if this existed when I purchased the phone either. I noticed it 3 months ago and bought the phone at the end of October '15.

I miss my n5 even though it's right next to me.
I'm having so many problems with this phone it's ridiculous.
I may go get the bigger sim made and start using the n5 again and sell this after I factory reset the damn thing.

I'm doing a factory reset right now so I'll update this thread as to what happens with the camera flash when everything is done.
Most likely tomorrow.

Thanks mate. Will look forward to seeing the outcome.

Unfortunately, the camera flash still didn't work immediately and up until now after the factory reset.
I fell asleep for a little bit and just woke up and tried again, and it works.
Exact behavior as prior to the reset.
A little off topic but I also did the reset to see if my Bluetooth connectivity issue gets resolved. The headset just stops receiving any stream of music while about 5 second in. And then randomly works.
This problem also continued afterwards. Very disappointing night but now I know it's time to use the warranty and call Google again.
Oh well. Just wanted to kick start this to try to help. Hoping to see if anyone else finds a solution.

Thanks mate for testing it out. The flash on mines is becoming intermittent. Does fail a lot more than it works though.
Seems to be more likely to work on a full charge but as battery depletes the flash begins to fail.
Other issues I have are laggy scrolling, terrible lag especially on the keyboard whilst charging the phone.
None of these issues I experienced with my Nexus 5.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk

I haven't thought of checking where the battery percentage is. Good idea.
But yeah those other problems are really annoying. Looks like it's only you and me on this thread so it must be a glitch in our phones.
Also it has the camera problem way more often than not.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app

I just took some pics at 83% battery and the flash worked.
I'll keep taking them as the battery drains and see if there's a point where the flash gets dim.
Try this on your end as well.

Black dots a problem?

Guys. When I use a pure dark picture in a dark room. There's numerous dark dot that seem to be non working. I'd say around a total of 40 on top and 40 spread around the screen. Should I get the replacement, or is there a possibility it could get even worse? Could find a way to take pics of it. Will update if I could

Got it off this dude on kijiji. Traded my lumia 800 for it. Guess I'll see if telus all fix it for me. They fix. They don't replace right?
PS and my phone with a black pic in a 100% dark room is not black at all. Still partially grayish with all the black dots super visible.

I have the same problem. More than 40 for me. It's noticeable when watching Netflix in a dark room. I won't lie that it is driving me nuts. Deep black pixel groups on a not-completely-black screen.
I've had this on my Galaxy S2 and I also do get it on my Galaxy Nexus. I always thought it's due to the way the LCD particle is laminated into the digitizer.
I won't lie, it bugs me, but i am certain that if i take it back (it's the 3rd time i return my phone for screen replacement, had all sort of yellow tints) they won't be able to see it, and i'll just be stuck with no phone for a week, and nothing will be achieved in the long run.

Picked mine up last Saturday. My old Evo 4G finally kicked the bucket. I'd say it's a pretty big upgrade. No lagging and everything works. Haven't rooted yet, and not sure I will anytime soon. I was getting awfully frustrated with the little things that didn't work on all of the various ROMs. Nice just to have everything doing what it's supposed to.

I came from 2.5 years on a Nexus One. I liked that phone a lot but am glad I finally upgraded.
Had the Incredible on Verizon for 2 years. Swore I'd never leave HTC or Verizon, but I have been thrilled with the GNex on StraightTalk. Thrilled.
It's not perfect, but it is pretty close. I always root my devices and for the first time I have not found a good reason to yet. Maybe when CM10 is Stable.
Speed, stability, camera, battery life...it has it all.
Came from an Epic 4G on Sprint just over a week ago.
Better network + better hardware = WIN!
Haven't rooted yet. Haven't seen much of a need to, except maybe to install DSP Manager.

I have to admit this is the most common phrase I hear and I agree with. It just works and everything is super fast. I held off from rooting longer than any device I have ever had about 2 months. That said I did finally root and run a ROM which is stock like with trinity kernel.
I have had mine since launch day on Verizon and can say with certainty that there is not another phone out that I would want. This phone does everything I want it to and without delay. I have had issues with signal loss but either it went away or I stopped caring.
I unlocked and rooted in March and flashed the leaked OTA in May but not until JB came out did I flash a custom ROM. I did not feel I needed to. Now I am flashing ROMs left and right. I keep coming back to Euroskank CM10. This ROM is blazing fast and super stable.
This is my first Nexus device but from now on I will only have Nexus phones. The dev community is great and we should get new updates for quite a while.
Came from a Droid X which by this point is darn near unrootable.

Do you suspect development will continue after the new nexus device is released?
I had the sensation, loved it. Bought a galaxy s2 a few days ago thinking it would be close enough to the nexus that I would be satisfied. I don't think I am, and can't stop thinking about getting the nexus.

From now on, new Android updates are just a matter of "when", not "if and when".

Now I can truly say....

Where The F Is My Nexus OTA Update? L710VPLG8!

I have had three over the air updates since I took my Nexus out of the box. I am finding out that there is a better OTA for people that live in LTE areas. Like LG8 or LG9?
Is this true? How can I update my phone now? I don't won't to root I just want apply the factory update like via zip file or something.
My phone keeps picking 3G over 4G. For instance when I go upstairs its 4G but when I go downstairs its 3G. This is so frustrating because I know the 4G signal is still good enough to stay on.
Does anyone know of a way to force LTE only on the Nexus or how to get the MLS Code without rooting? I might be able to adjust it from the inner settings.
Guys I really need some help here because this LTE experience I am having really blows.

You are confusing the L710VPLG8 update that Sprint is rolling out for the Galaxy S 3, a completely different device, with whatever the latest update is for the Galaxy Nexus. (I am no expert on the Gnex, but I was the one who advised you about that firmware version over in the Sprint GS3 General Forum. You posted your question in the wrong forum since it turns out that you actually have a Galaxy Nexus.)
Where the f is your brain... its not even even the same model number. The gnex is the SPH-L700 not 710.... and the latest update is FG01.

I wasn't asking for that exact rom I was meaning where is my equivalent fix because the FG01 is a piece of s***.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it jack a**.
I can be in the same house and get full 4G bars and full 3G bars and I can see the phone fighting to figure out which one and guess what it chooses f-ing 3G.
There must be a sophisticated fix to this.

Do you really need 4g on? My understanding is it wastes allot of battery.. just suffer with 3g. Or use Wi-Fi?

So ... I pulled a stupid today. I had downloaded a rom for the wrong phone. So then I download the rom for the correct phone. When in recovery I accidently clicked the wrong rom and full blown bricked the crap out of my phone. Phone is completely non responsive do you think Sprint will give me a had time when going to replace it ... can they tell its been flashed if it wont power on?

If you can't get into Download or Recovery like the guy above me said go to a Sprint store and play dumb. I've seen a couple of these threads and that's always the solution. I ALMOST flashed a wrong ROM once and I've been scared ever since. I check the file about 10 times before I flash it. Haha. I hope they will replace it.
Honestly should have known better and deleted the file before ever booting into recovery ... nope no download or recovery. Ill be taking it in tomorrow most likely.

as long as anyone doesn't play dumb with me ( sprint tech) i dont mind helping one get a replacement regardless the root. just saying..... lol

I really do appreciate all the responses XDA has the best users on Android Central all they did is lecture me about throwing around the word bricked. They actually only linked me to another thread about how people shouldn't throw around the word bricked because it gives the rooting community a bad name and makes people concerned about rooting. Unfortunately they weren't aware that I know what I'm talking about and that it's not just soft bricked. Also I've never had to go through anything like this and wasn't sure how Sprint would handle it so I really do appreciate everyone's responses and not just giving me crap.

I just took my phone into Sprint ... they are replacing it at no cost. I just told them it would turn on ... they couldnt get the phone to do anything. The tech said he hadn't seen one like this before ... the charge light wouldn't even come on when plugged into the wall ... lol.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I figured they would just replace it being that the phone was non responsive so no way to confirm root ... like they would even check.

Yup...I had my phone bricked as soon as I tried to root my phone...I took my phone to sprint and played dumb and told them the phone all of a sudden turned off and wouldn't turn on...the techs didn't know any better and they couldnt prove that i tried to root my phone...
I got a new phone no questions asked...I'm pretty sure they know but can't really say to a customer, "did you try to root your phone?", play dumb again and they can't really say anything I suppose...

I wouldn't go as far to say that, The Policy, the Black and white of it is this. Sprints Technical Support Policy for techs working on Rooted/Altered software devices can still be services and the tech must attempt to resolve issue by re-flashing back to OEM specs with OEM flashing tools installed on the triage laptops that they have. Once it is determine that the device cannot be flashed for what ever the reason may be ( Will not cover water/physical damage) they will and again "will" make the attempt to resolve the issue....Hence even if the resolution is to replace the phone which is called "DHRP".Device Handset Replacement Program. I would be careful not to use these terms with them as it will surely make you look like your doing fraud, if that happens-Cancel your acct, They will flag that acct so fast in red bold notes that no one will help you.

Did you make sure to keep the battery out while you did this?
Its important to NOT place the battery back into the phone when attempting to go to download mode...
Also install kies as it will install the drivers when you connect it to the pc

Not that I care about you personal rants, I am somewhat curious as to how you would think (wrongly) about this infornation being fraud?
For one, it is the policy that they follow for these exact cases.
Two, the person attempted to root their device, if they pay insurance then ther are covered under sprints terms for instore repair.
I would like to also remind you about car insurance, lets say for example that a person was at fault for crashing there own car, filed a claim with full coverage on the vehicle. By your statement, this is fraud?
Its the internet and sometimes you forget this, but what you would jot say to a person to there face dont say it at all. But hey thats your problem and hence why I dont contribute free information. May you find peace within in you.

Turn on Wifi and turn it off, then reboot, after it settles turn it on again, connect to a Wifi and then turn it off... That's what I did, I live in a 4g area and it is faster than my dsl Wifi so I don't use it at all but after doing this the issue went away...

I'm on lorjay's 4.3 TW rom, which one are you using? I'm on the latest release and don't have that issue anymore, my only suggestion would be to reflash the MC2 with counter reset and then lorjays rom then odin the wifi fix again, I know it is a pita to do it but since I haven't seen anybody else with our issue that will be the last resource... the only issue I keep carrying is the mdm_hsic_pm0 wakelock... the only thread about it is here and I have tried all the suggestions... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2009956

Can you check under Wi-Fi advanced settings and see if your device has always allow scanning checked. I'm assuming that's what your problem is. If it is that you will experience a huge increase in battery life. I had that option on when I first updated like oooh that sounds interesting. Thing was draining battery like no tomorrow and kept the blue bar solid just like on your screenshot.

No problem. I don't know why Google added that option, it sounds interesting but it's crap! What they don't tell you is how batt hungry it is and instead says in the description it saves battery. Idk maybe there's a glitch since it's new.. I was just setting up an HTC One I upgraded my aunt to and they throw that option at you soon as you start a phones set up process. I'm sure many are checking it off thinking it's better than using the GPS and mobile location option. It really isn't, although wifi is off from settings n notification toggles it's still actually on in a sneaky way. Only way to tell it's running 24/7 is through that blue bar or from BBS.
