WiFi ridiculously slow - May update - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is a relatively new problem for me, my Nexus 5x has been an okay experience until now but my WiFi is suddenly ridiculously slow on my phone. I have good WiFi, it's incredibly fast on every other device, I just can't understand it, I've tried multiple clean wipes, different ROMs, different kernels and I just can't fix it. It has gotten to the point where I am switching to cellular data just to load photos received on Messenger and to download app updates from the Playstore. How dangerous would it be for me to revert back to an earlier update such as the April or March one? Thankyou.
Short - WiFi ridiculously slow, mobile data fine. Clean flashes don't help. How dangerous (security wise) is going back to an older update?

turn on Bluetooth this fixes that issue

Bluetooth settings don't work. Helped in the short term then started crawling again. Need a fix Google!!!

These bugs are annoying as they were fixed before but they are back god knows why is Google kidding us

WIFI Problems since MyFroyo RC4

Ever since going from MyFroyo RC4 to RC5 & RC6 (and even the Cyanogen RC01, I have had problems with my wifi.
I am posting here to see if anyone else is experiencing these problems, and to find out what changed between RC4 and RC5.
I have no cell service at my house, so when I flash a new ROM, I need to leave the house and go to an area where I get service before I can connect to the Google Servers to set up my device. When on Wifi, I also have problems downloading Google items in the market (such as Google Search Bar) and can't even use Google.com to search for anything. It times out. I can, however, use other websites and download other items (once I've set up my device remotely).
If I am setting this up over Edge or 3G, there are never any problems.
If I re-flash back to MyFroyo RC4, I can use my wifi with no problem to do everything I need.
I really love the updates since RC4 - but am worried that I'll be left in the dust since all the builds since RC4 have had this issue for me. :-/
I'm in the same boat and experience the same WiFi issues.

I've never had a single Wifi issue, although I never really tested on RC1 too much. I'm currently running Eugene's newest CM6, have you tried that one yet?

supposed to be a cyanogenmod issue though i havent experienced it myself (i also have horrible service 1-2 bars edge max) using wifi everything loads up fast and everything downloads just fine! but if i were you i would try the nightlies they are supposed to have fixed the problem by now if im not mistaken
I've experienced a lot of this too. Marker downloads were pretty much not happening for me, no matter what - Wifi or Data. On data, it would download but never install. On Wifi no images in the market would load and no download would activate. I also couldn't use Google.com or sign into Gmail via the browser or other Google services. I did a lot of searching and heard it could be Google.
What I did to fix it... I did some nandroids, I did some wipes and updates and complete formats, etc. What I finally think I had was a problem in my packages.xml file where so many programs were mismatched due to Froyo's ability to use apps2fat32. I think at some point some nandroiding I had done, etc screwed up my package assignments and then I just fresh installed and DO NOT BACK DATA/SETTINGS UP WITH GOOGLE! haha, I honestly think that had a lot to do with it also...Go into your Privacy and turn auto restore off, turn backup data off, then reset your device with a wipe of it all and such, boot up and don't select backup with Google. I've had no more issues really.

I've actually tried the new nightly's and still have the same problems. I've also tried completely wiping it and starting from scratch- and made sure not to back up w/ GOOGLE servers- but to no avail.
I wonder if anyone on here can figure out what changed between MyFroyo RC4 and RC5 that could cause this - seems something is blocking the Google Synch. I've also experienced the problems mentioned above regarding the market items not downloading, no images, etc. Just seems weird that it worked completely fine before RC5, which came out around the same time as the Cyanogen 6 Slide RC1
From my personal experience I'd have to say that wifi is slightly bugged. Drops randomly and occassionally won't detect my network when other Android devices will (any encryption, which is for suckers anyway )
At least I know I'm not the only one w/ this problem. I couldn't find a cyanogen defect for this issue.
Same here. I have no wifi. My g1 connects just fine and my hd2 but on the slide its a no go. Ive tried everything but eventually just gave up. Im using Eugenes Ota update. Im not sure if its just the slide in general but my wifi doesn't work period. It'll connect but if i load up youtube or try the web I get a no connection error. Its very peculiar. Incredibly peculiar.
I am having the same issue. I noticed people talked about it with CM6 rc1 but not everyone was having the issue and the subject died off. Ive tried reloading, wiping everything, htcclay's new version but nothing seems to help. The wifi is just strange will work for a page or two than fail to load or loads half way. Also tried on several different networks. Does anyone know if the driver is the same in eugenes as in these later ones?
After wiping and keeping a good eye on everything, the issue I have with Wifi and the browser is that sometimes it just hangs about 75% page load and doesn't really change unless I leave the phone go for a bit and wait for it to load.
Downloaded Opera Mini (only browser I could find that doesn't use the native browser). With Opera, I've actually hadn't had any loading issues or anything weird like that happen. So many a possible partial-bypass is using another browser? It helped me, just thought I'd share.

Same bugginess happening here, too. Iffy, at best. Other than that and of course the non-necessary FN and CAPS light, this is the only issue, anymore, that I can see.

OTA 4.0.4 (new) IMM76I - improves on signal loss issue, not solve it

Previously on the older 4.0.4 I lost the GSM signal AND could not recover signal every day after my phone went to deep sleep.
Since I updated, this morning is the ONLY day so far that I lost signal and did not recover signal.
Looks like this fix is not perfect but it helps.

I saw the same thing on my Nexus
So went back to setcpu setting the min speed of 700. Works like a charm

arguably yes, isn't it the most important thing this update is supposed to address? There's no bug thread on 4.0.4 IMM76I. pray tell what you would have done.
There is another one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614575
I think you should extend this thread title with "for me". Because who had the "real" signal drop during sleep issue, the new OTA fixed it for them. Probably you have another issue, what is look-a-like the signal issue, but it is not that.

I never experienced the issue, but I love how everybody is assuming that this new build fixes this notorious issue. I have yet to see a change log or any kind of information from Google that explains what was done in this release other than "a few kernel tweaks." People's posts on XDA quickly turn into accepted facts of information without any kind of verification.
Fixed it for me. What do you think it was?

I have no idea, but shouldn't these things be logged somewhere? It would be nice if Google issued some release notes with their releases so people can stop speculating whether a certain bug was fixed or not.
Some people don't feel there is a need to do a factory default after every update, I on the other hand disagree.
When I changed over to Yakju, I did a factory default and wiped everything. I never had a signal drop issue at all.
However when I got the new small update via OTA, I decided to let it run for a bit without the factory default.... As such, I experienced one drop as noted on Signal Alert.
Immediately I did a factory default and wiped everything again. Haven't had one signal drop since...
So not saying there never was a problem to begin with, but it does seem that factory defaulting after every update causes things to run a lot more smooth, permanently. At least for me.
Agreed. I always do a reset then restore particular apps with titbu. No software issues so far.

Will try this when I get home today. It's really irritating me how my signal just drops and I have to do a "Airplane Mode On/Off" to reacquire signal.
It actually got worse since I updated to IMM76I.

IMM76I was just a kernel. The kernel reverts the radio and voltage changes.
If folks really believe that IMM76I was not a fix, they could easily run an old 4.0.3 kernel. If it fixes it, then the problem is IMM76I, if it does not, then they are pointing their finger in the wrong direction.
Here is a 4.0.3 image I found. Fastboot it.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot boot.img

[Q] Wifi loses connectivity after period of inactivity

Hello,
I've searched around the Epic 4G Touch forums as best I could, but sadly I couldn't find anything that was exactly this problem (although I found some interesting articles about wifi sleep time but they don't seem to apply). I'm experiencing an annoying issue where I can connect Wifi just fine, but if the phone is left for a small period of time (~10 minutes), wifi appears as if it's still connected, however it cannot send/receive data. When this happens, the wifi status says it's "connected", but there is no data connection. The only way to to get the data back is to turn off wifi, wait for 3/4G connection to initialize, then turn Wifi back on to refresh it...then it's fine again until I set the phone down again.
I had this problem on stock EL29, so I rooted and flashed Phantom Blazer ROM (very cool ROM, but I'm still experiencing the same issue). After reading the threads on here about wifi sleep times (apparently they're backwards with ICS roms), I've experimented with every setting, yet I still have the same issue--Wifi is fine as long as I'm using the phone, I set it down, after about 10 minutes pick it back up, says it's still connected, but no data connection.
has anybody experienced this problem with this phone? I'm about to unroot my phone/go back to factory so I can take it in to a Sprint store, the problem is they (trying not to be offensive) don't seem to know very much about this device. I thought I'd ask the pros before I return it, get an iPhone, and have to eat my words about how cool Android is vs. iPhone in front of all my friends. I'm hoping there's a reliable ROM or app that can resolve this vs. having to just replace the device!
Thanks for your help!
I'm not the only one
I'm not the only one with this problem:
edit: I can't post links to androidforums.com or anywhere else, but this same problem is all over the interwebs and nobody has a solution.
I'm sure it's not my router as my ASUS tablet/laptops/girlfriend's iPhone experiences no connectivity problems. I'm thinking this is a hardware problem with some of these devices. I will unroot/reset to factory tonight and let you know what happens.
What channel is your router on? And what type is it A/B/G/N?
This is s known TW ICS bug, most likely kernel related. Almost everyone is having this issue and there is no fix until Samsung decides to repair it. There are quite a few posts similar to this one. If you're using XDA's search function, it's not very good. Try using Google next time and search XDA that way.

Hey guys, thanks for the response. Just before I unrooted/reset to factory I tried one last solution--download an app called "Wifi Fixer". It has resolved a lot of these problems. It's not 100%, but after testing it for a day so far, I've only had to manually refresh the connection once or twice. It's a lot better, even liveable, and I won't be resetting to factory afterall, at least not until Samsung provides an update. So if anyone is having the same problem, try Wifi Fixer, hopefully it gives you a similar level of success...I'm not super happy about having to run another background process all the time, but it doesn't seem to affect battery, and the fix it provides is worth it to me.
Cheers!
Huh - a couple of things. Noticed this problem crept back in FF18 and didn't know why until I went back and checked the wpa_supplicant.conf that I'm using. The line ap_scan=2 was missing; after adding it back in the signal strength is back to full and stable.
I'll bump the thread but it appears the config changes here still hold after all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569348
This should also avoid having the WiFi fixer there as you can specify the country in wpa_supplicant.conf manually.
Thanks for looking in to this! A couple questions from a noob like me though:
When you say the problem crept back in FF18 ... what does that mean? Is that something that exists in the "stock" version of the Epic 4G touch from Sprint?
The manual config file tweaks you're describing ... is that something I can perform myself?
Basically I'm wondering if it's "safe" to revert to stock in order to get consistent wifi signal, or if it's something I'm experiencing because of the ROM I'm using.
Thanks!

CM11, random data blackout

Hoping this might ring a bell with anyone who has fiddled around with the GN and CM11.
The CM11 update notification won me over and I pushed CM11 (11-20140308 snap - toro) a few weeks ago.
Interestingly enough I saw a HUGE battery drain improvement. Possibly an oddity unless others have noticed this too.
Anyway, the big issue when using CM11 is random data blackouts. The phone can be on 3G, 4G, or Wifi and it will act like there is no data access. eBay app and Chrome give the 'no connection' type error with other things like email just not updating.
The fix so far is to reboot the phone. As soon as it comes back up the data portion works perfectly. Not the most time effective solution especially if trying to get important data on the go.
I know Google has marked this phone as past it's prime in terms of support, but with CM still supporting builds for this device I'm hoping something may sound familiar and somebody could give some words of wisdom for this problem. With the Nexus 6 device slotted to be released in the summer/fall timeframe I'm holding out on replacing the GN.
Ideas anyone?
change other kernel/boot.img

well yes but I was also interested if anyone else may have been experiencing this.
if this is the same issue I've seen in some ROM threads then yes you aren't alone.
instead of doing a reboot, have you tried toggling airplane mode on then off? if that works, you'll spend way less time vs waiting for boot up
glad to know I wasn't alone on this one!
The 'no network found' issue just came up a minute ago. Probably had tried the airplane mode before but in a hurry I defaulted to restart.
The quick switch between AP mode and back did bring the connection back, although with the phone starting up fairly quickly the different between doing AP mode or restarting seems to be differently by only a second or two.
If this has been seen with some ROMs, what have people turned to as an alternative?

No data after leaving WiFi

My stock T-Mobile G3 continues to give me weird issues. After I leave WiFi, I only able to make calls, but don't have any data, unless I reboot. It does not happen all the time, but often when I on WiFi for a while. I tried disabling WiFi Calling and it seemed to help. This morning the data was working as soon as I left home range. I tried reflashing the stock ROM and modem, but it didn't work.
Yeah, I have the same issues on stock...
Basically, I've stopped using Wifi Calling altogether. If I was on Wifi with it on and then left the Wifi area, I couldn't do anything, no calls, no texting, no data. Reboot would bring it back, but that was a pain.
Everything seemed okay with Wifi Calling off, but then I noticed that it would randomly not give me data when I left Wifi. As you said, reboot fixes it. It doesn't happen nearly as often as when I leave Wifi Calling on, so it's not too annoying to have to deal with it right now.
One question I have for you, did you do a full phone wipe after you upgraded to the latest OTA update? I've heard doing so helps with some of the strange quirks like this, but haven't taken the time to do so myself.
The whole point of me switching over to G3 from Nexus 5 was to get the WiFi calling feature. This blows completely. I'm still going to hold on to in, hoping they release new update in September.
As far as wiping, I've flashed the device so many times by now, I'm pretty sure I've done a full wipe at some point.

Ah, that sucks. I was hoping that wiping might solve my issue.
Well then, maybe contact T-mobile? If it's not a wide-spread issue (I've asked around here and haven't heard others with this exact problem until your post) then maybe there's a solution.
