nx5x ambient display (wake on motion) doesn't work - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a new nx5x and my girlfriend got a brand new one. Mine wakes on motion, but her's doesn't
Ambient display is turned on.
Is it defective? She really wants this feature. There isn't any other config related to this?
I tried a sensor tester on it, but don't know what sensor to test or what to look for.

G3 Display auto adjustment???

I was wondering if someone has noticed similar behavior on their G3. My G3 is 100% stock and is only a week old. Wherever I wake up my device, about 5 seconds after turning it the screen has a small flicker and the screen seems to auto adjust or calibrate. This only happens once every time I wake up the device. My auto-brightness is set to off and the screen is at 100% brightness. I did some tests and noticed that when I wake up the device with the top sensors covered (proximity, front camera etc), that the screen doesn't have this flick to it. Is there some sort of "outdoor" mode or something on these where the screen will self calibrate when it notices it's in a bright situation?
Please test on your devices and let me know if you see anything similar to this. I tried taking a video but it's so quick and subtle that the video doesn't show it.
mine does same. vzw. covered sensors, still brightness adjustment.
only just now noticed today, but could have been happening all along.
I think it has something do with the proximity sensor. If you cover the sensor with a note pad you cannot turn on the screen, prob a tap to wake feature so it doesn't turn on in your pocket. But if you lift the note pad just enough to turn the screen on and quickly cover it, mine does not flick. I have tried this many times and worked 100% of the times.
My friend who works for at said that his does the same as well as the demo. Must be a weird firmware issue. Hopefully its resolved in the next ota
How many times are you gonna make this thread?

(Q) How to Check if Ambient Light Sensor is working?

Hi Guys I just wanted to know if Ambient Light Sensor is working or Not, As I have enabled Developer Options and in that when I press Manufacturer Tab then I see the Hardware Testing.
When I press Ambient Light Sensor it shows 0.0 , is it same for everyone or just me?
Also How can I test that Ambient Light Sensor is working or not?
Thanks and Regards

It's highly directional. If you're in a dim room, it will sit at zero until you aim it at a light. It's not very sensitive in low light, but past some threshold it will jump up. If you can't get it to change when you shine a light on it, I think you've got a problem.
Working for me in my office ...depending on whether I cover the light/lamp or not the ambient light sensor reading is changing...even when I just tilt the watch a bit....I am on 5.0.2...never checked before...

About Ambient Display

Hello guys,
Ambient Display is what the display shows gray notification when you picked up your device. Right ?
I am wondering is the AMBIENT DISPLAY really working in our Device?
I mean like in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TyhaOjME5g
Mine is not working like this. I enabled the option in the display settings. But I am getting the gray notifications twice or thrice and that's all.
It isn't responding (Showing notifications) when I picked my phone up. Is it require any hardware equipment or something? is it just replica to the Original Feature?
or Its just mine not working?
can anyone clarify my doubt. Thanks in advance
For me it also doesn't work when picking up my phone, but the screen waking when notifications arrive does. I suppose it uses some hardware that our 1S doesn't have.
Yeah.. I too think so

Ambient Display

Is there any app that can show ambient display always on only when we have a notification waiting our attention?
Samsung have it's display always on, there are several apps that do that, but that I don't want.
OP5T have Ambient Display that only lights up when we tilt the phone, than screen turns off again, I want a app that makes my screen Always of and just when I receive a notification it became always on in ambient display until I dismiss or view the notification(s).
The approach of OP is, we have to tilt phone to screen wake up, it's a kind of battery saving, but if I have my phone in hands and be moving, some times the screen lights up unnecessarily, and if is resting in secretary I have to raise it up to show ambient display.

I feel you on this one. Just moved over to OP5T from a Moto X 2014 Pure (and it still works pretty good!) and had become used to the "breathing" notifications with the AMOLED display and hand wave over proximity sensor to show ambient notifications. There is actually a tweak to this aspect in the Omni ROM that just released with Android 8, although it may not be stable enough for daily driving. Will be nice when the settings drill down into this area.

Ambient display (always on) flickering a middle brightness

Got a Pixel 2 xl off ebay and everything seems fine just the ambient display (always on) screen flickers at middle brightness. In the dark it is fine and the bright light it is fine just mid brightness I can notice it. Has anyone else noticed this? Pretty happy with the phone so far and know the camera will make up for anything just find it pretty annoying at times.
Also the fingerprint sensor is random, sometimes it works other times it won't recognize the print others it says the sensor is dirty. Thinking this phone has a couple of hardware faults and that I should sent it back but for £300 I don't know if it was worth it,any thoughts??
Did hard rest no luck with that so going to try development package, then maybe custom rom to see if they can iron out the issues.
I disabled "New Notifications" toggle from the Settings which keeps the ambient display on but does not wake the phone up and show lock screen for new notifications. Seems to work.
I guess the problem is about this new "Silent Notifications". You can not see them but they come and go momentarily waking the phone up.
