I got an upgrade available to get a play for $50, and I'm wondering how great they are. I've been getting annoyed at the touch screen controls for gaming, and want a controller finally.
However, I'm worried as to how smooth, responsive, and great the graphics are with psx emulators or games like GTA3.
My Atrix is unlocked, rooted, and running CM7.
I saw quadrant scores at ~1700 with xperia play and got worried seeing as I score ~3500 no problem, and with Antutu the Atrix gets much much higher scores than the play especially in 3D and CPU.
Does anyone have experience with both phones and can give me some ideas as to how they perform against eachother?
with the exception of the screen, the play is going to be slightly slower/worse in most respects, mine generally doesnt lag, but it happens on occasion, the tegra2 gpu is not much better than whats in the play, so gaming wise its not far behind the atrix. the browser is ok, but im expecting a big boost to usability on that front when we get ics with hw acceleration. As a phone, the play is pretty good, not amazing, but it gets the job done.
It really comes down to the hw controller, yes, theres plenty of phones out that are better than the play, but if u want to play a game, i would take the play, every time. playing things like sonic cd, or super metroid, mario 64, crash bandicoot, etc etc etc(i have about 6k+ games on my phone, ranging from nes through to n64 and everything in between almost) the play dominates the competition, 99% of those games play and feel as good or better than they originally did to play....and that in itself is amazing, and its not just emulators the games on the market are very often xplay optimized as well, its kinda suprising given the plays relatively small market share just how many are actually optimized for this little unit.
i bought mine for $450 outright with the option of an sgs2 at about $550, maybe 6 months ago, and do not regret the purchase, ive used a few sgs2's and whilst nice, good luck playing a game an enjoying it, im not sure what im gonna do if they dont end up releasing a play 2....

Couldn't have said it better myself
Although I can say that GTA runs fine for me. I'm not sure how it runs on the Atrix, but on the Play it runs pretty much the same as the PS2 version
Upgraded from an unlocked 1.3 OCed Atrix I like my play much better. Most apps are written to work on 600—800 MHZ single cores so basically the second core doesn't do much. And most "tegra exclusive" games have ported to other phones and run 100% smooth (beat GOF2 two months ago)

How did GOF2 perform with the graphics and framerate? Did it look the same?
Also, how good is the responsiveness on websites, flash, streaming YouTube, Netflix, and texting in general?
Also, are you able to use the SD to install apps? That's one big thing I don't like is storage space.
My xperia play is extremely responsive in the internet browser and pretty much any other app that I use. I upgraded from an OG droid like a year ago and the xperia play felt incredibly fast. I just overclocked my xperia play to 1.6ghz now and it's even more fast. PSX emulation's performance is to the point where it feels as if it were made for the xperia play; the games just work flawlessly with the game pad. I have grand theft auto 3 also and it plays really smooth.

Very nice hearing that.
I still need to figure out if there's a way to use my 16gb as card for app storage because I have roughly 10gbs of apps/games on my phone.
I'd use up that 400mb in a second.
Also, can I adjust the PPI or resolution to match that of the Atrix since the screens are the same size?
Is there any video out for gaming on a TV?
Overall, I'm probably going to get it and sell my Atrix, I'm just trying to plan for it since my biggest problem is that memory issue. Going from 16gb internal to 400mb is a rough one for me.

I have like 76 apps and the majority give you the option to put most of the app data on your sd card. i have 182mb internal free space with all these apps, but I did remove all of the stock verizon apps too
I used titanium backup to force move a majority of my apps to the sdcard. Have over 300 apps and still have around 180mb of free space. Have my phone overclocked to 1.2 and it just flies. I am running the Verizon stock Tom minus all the crapware they put on. Great phone, love it. Games like shadowgun, modern combat 3 are all smooth and awesome to play.

the xperia play is a great phone
but i see it as if you have to consider the benefits of a xperia play over another phone then the xperia probably isnt for you. most people will instantly see that the hardware controls are its selling point and buy it for that. to use for emulators mostly.
Just tried out a xperia play today, I'm going to buy one. They got a sale right now that its free with a 2 year contract. It was smooth online and the launcher was awesome. I tried asphalt 6 on it and compared it to my phone in HD, and I couldn't notice the HD difference, but it ran perfect.
Ill be buying it next week and selling my Atrix for $200 so basically I get 2.5 months free

You can use a stock Motorola 16 gb SD on this phone, it comes with an 8. I just swapped them between my Droid and this when I got it. However you're better off buying a Sandisk 32 GB class 4 card if you want the best performance.
There is no video out.
You also cannot adjust the screen resolution unless you root the device.
I find it amazing that a phone with a gamepad doesn't have a video out..

Galaxy on Fire plays pretty well... I'm midway through it, and I've had my share of action with lots of ships and all around shooting and what not, and the Play delivers flawlessly.
Just got my play, the thinner screen is taking some time to get used to.
Right now im bored because im not unlocked yet. Still gotta pay that guy $25 to get it done.

Hello,
First let me start off by saying this forum has to be the best thing that happened to cellphones since Java and Flash!
Anyways, what I wanted to know is I have the opportunity to upgrade to the i9300 for 150-200$ + my phone traded in, I just wanted to know if the International can handle Dead trigger with less lag? I have tegra 3 Stuff enabled and just wanted to know what to expect!
Thank You guys!
Why would you want to get an international? Besides better dev support and slightly better CPU/gpu, our S3 is still a beast with the S4 processer and 2GB of RAM. Anyways to answer your question, of course the international will run Dead Trigger flawlessly

If you buying phone purely or mostly for games then international all the way.
US version is good all around if your not heavy gamer.

Well I traded up and tbh it seems like there are a lot of biases going around, the experience for now is much smoother overall...maybe its a placebo effect or maybe in the long run this will get slower too but for now everything responds much faster.
Not trying to start anything I just think ppl need to be well informed so they know what to purchase. The international is definately smoother for now and loads apps faster off hand. The international seems to also have FM Radio. The 3G though seems MUCH slower. I mean noticeably slower, sometimes I'm downloading @ 200 KB/s. Also the Ram does fill up fast, just with basic use I'm at 750 megs.
Hope this helps any potential upgrades, purchasers or just knowledge junkies
Also off hand, standby seems to be better on battery for international while use is better on the US. The last about the same from start to finish, but the US has LTE which drains battery more, so I give the nod to the LTE version for battery!
There also seems to be 4 options in Locations Services instead of the 3 in the LTE model, Use wireless netoworks, Use GPS Satelittes, Use Sensor aiding and Location and Google Search. I only remember 3 options in the LTE model.
Thanks for all the replies I'll report back once I get it rooted and running Dead Trigger!
-Another thing I noticed is the international seems to detect my 5 GHZ Wifi Signal, while the Rogers phone couldn't.
Adreno 225 can handle any intensive ggame like Mali mp4 or tegra 3. I currently own s3 adreno, it handles any game I throw at it with breeze, plays hd movies like a champ, plus its 2GB ram for awesome multitasking and with lte makes it a bigger deal IMO.
Dead trigger with high gfx settings plays fine on mine.

I agree...there isn't a game out there right now that the Adreno 225 can't run with ease...Dead Trigger runs like a champ on mine...

I did a test for both, and they both start off lagging at the beginning, but the mali handles the rest of the level better. The frames also don't dip, while the adreno did dip, although not too noticeable you could see where the frame rates would dip. The Adreno did amazingly I agree, but it also lagged when getting certain kills, and by lag I mean 1 second freezes! Let's just say the Adreno is a little prone to hiccups once in a blue!
The International also loads into levels faster, but I did find A LOT of bugs when doing the stupid free Gold crap on international....I still haven't gotten my netflix Gold or some the games wouldn't boot properly on the international. One of the Gambing games took 5 tries before it loaded, while on the US it loaded after 2 tries.
Also I do also notice a slightly longer time it takes from going to PLay store back to Dead Trigger, the Krait seemed to handle this better, or it might be the extra Ram headroom.
Lte isn't a big sell for me because @ 1 GB max bandwidth I'm in no hurry to use it all the time and I'm mostly at school which has wifi . 2 GB of ram is a major Loss, but I can't feel it yet. Most likely when we see more development for the phones, we might see some emulation that the US phone can do that this can't, or Virtual machine or w.e.
The other thing I really like is the menu fluidness. It's noticeable on international, it just feels smoother after the phone has been on for a while it's still kept its fluidness, when I remember my friend's Girlfriend tested out my phone (US at the time) because she liked it, she asked why the transitions were so laggy (at the time I had less Widgets running which really shocked me).
As of right now, I'm really pissed the international wasn't available as the base model so users can see the difference for themselves.
-Another thing, the International if your using it while it's plugged into your computer, it will not charge! LOL even if it says it's charging the percentage will either stay the same or go down if your doing intense stuff. The US version just raised up slower
Will report any more changes I see.
P.S the international version I'm using still has it's bloatware! :S I'll see what happens to ram when that is killed off!

As someone who uses his devices for gaming extensively, I can assure you that gaming on your Note 2 would be a great experiance. I have tried almost every high end game in the market on N7100, and till now have not experianced any sort of lag or any other problems. NOVA 2,3, Shadowgun, GTA Vice City Modern Combat 2,3, NFS Most Wanted, Dead Space, Backstab, Dead Trigger, BIA2, Virtua Tennis etc and originally PC games like Max Payne and GTA 3 etc all run very smoothly. The only problem I have yet had is with MC 4, but I think it's only because of a script I am running and not the fault of the device. I have also heard that there are problems with Asphalt 7 but as I had played it a lot on my Tab 2 I am not really interested in downloading it again.
My theory is that one shouldn't hold the most powerful mobile device in the world in his hand if he has no interests in gaming By the time I am done with this device I will have had my money's worth

Those who help noobs go to heaven. True story.
As said above, all games I have played run amazing on the N2. It's a great gaming 'phablet'. I have heard Asphalt 7 and MC4 are running a tad slow, but MC4 is having this issue on other high end phones as well. I will try MC4 very soon...
the two main games ive got on my note 2 are wild blood and nfs most wanted.
with nfs most wanted, the framerates are much more playable compared to my nexus 7. however, its still note quite at 60fps. it generally depends on the amount of action, but early game, it sticks pretty close to 60fps. late game, when you start having lots of high speed cars on screen, along with police in corvettes and road blocks, i've seen it drop down to 25fps. its still far more playable compared to my nexus 7 (nexus 7 drops to around 7-15fps around some of these parts), but its still a notable drop.
that being said, i do come from a PC gaming background, and i've got my computer set up so it never drops below 60fps at max settings, which is the only reason why i notice most of the drops and stutters. for most people, it will probably still seem really slow.
as for wild blood, havent played it much, but it seems to run at a fairly low framerate (lower compared to nfs mw anyhow). still playable though.
compared to my note 1 and nexus 7 though, the note 2 is a much better device. much more oomph, a lot less stutter, a lot less lag, much more responsive overall.

I have nfs just to test out this phone and honestly I was totally expecting it to run 100% smoothly considering the ranting and raving of this device, not to mention the heavy dollar amount for a 16 gig phone. I am thoroughly impressed with it. Seems to me that gameloft is the only company making games that can really test the phone so they can expect some profit now that they have something that works with their games. Only thing I don't like about the phone is not the largeness but rather the fact that everything downloaded goes straight to the internal memory, including picture downloads etc. So I have to go to the computer and manually transport it to the sd card but that's a small drawback for me.

if youre talking about picture downloads from the browser, go into the browser, settings, advanced, and change the default storage.
you can also set the camera to default storage to the memory card, but this only works for individual snaps. burst snaps will save to internal memory by default (to avoid slow memory cards slowing down the burst rate), and you'll have to move them later.
MC4 runs flawless on my device.

I would recommend the LG GPAD 3 or GPAD X. Better specs and display. It will be better for gaming. No root or even unlocked bootloader though. I returned this tablet. It's a bit laggy and display is pretty low quality.

it is still good for games i play every new game no lag on custom rom ,needed new battery i would invest so much in another tablet just for games unless it`s ipad in fall
unless u have money for a 3gb ram tablet like samsung tab S3 ,your limitations will be the ram these days the games takes a lot of ram it`s 64bit cpu though besides that play store from 2018 will be 64 bit apps exclusive like ios so need minimum 3gb ram in future good luck
Need help with my LGE LGLS990 "ALT Switch" Gaming console Project (G3 Boost Mobile)
Wasn't sure which G3 forum to put this in due to none being devoted to this specific one so please forgive me if this isn't the right place. Recently I was looking at the Nintendo Switch for some on the go gaming and noticed how difficult it was to find one in stock at any local retailers. Well after getting online and only finding overpriced, Switch Lites going for regular Switch MSRP and standard Switch prices running in the $500 range I decided maybe it would be possible to come up with a "ALT Switch". My requirements seem to be met by the G3, decent SOC, 32gb onboard storage, 3gb ram and a sub $30 dollar price. I plan on pairing this with a bluetooth controller, 64gb sd card and a OTG hub with hdmi and charging. So with the hardware sorted out I started testing various games out and almost everything works pretty well. My problem comes when I play Call of Duty Mobile. It of course runs in low graphics mode but that isn't too bad, the problem comes when it randomly crashes out of the game or lags real bad. I have a LG Rebel 4 with a Snapdragon 425 and 2gb of ram that handles the game on about the same level and is more stable. So I've narrowed down the problem to the outdated OS and trying to run the games in 2560x1440. I would like to drop the resolution down to 1080 but there's no option for that so I started looking for ways to do it. Seems it's possible with a couple programs but those all need ROOT access. So between that and the benefits of a newer version of android I decided to look into rooting and installing a custom rom. Long story short, I've had no luck. If anyone knows of a easy to follow guide to root, unlock the bootloader and install a newer version of android on this hardware I'd love to hear about it. I'll be doing a article and possibly a video on this project depending on how far I can get.
Hmmmmmm......
Okay... Since no one has any ideas does anyone know anybody on the forum who knows their stuff and would be trustworthy enough for me to send my G3 to and have it rooted at the very least? I really think the hardware on the G3 is plenty powerful enough to play anything out there at a good level of detail and good frame rates. I think lowering the screen resolution dropped to 720p or 1080 and change of the performance governor to non interactive mode would give close to top tier chipset performance without the price penalty.
