1.53 enabling carrier tethering checks? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I have an Unlocked HTC 10 on AT&T unlimited without the mobile hotspot plan. Previously on 1.30, I was able to activate the mobile hotspot, and I believe the same was true for the 1.27(?) that the phone came with. Now, however, after updating to 1.53 using the image that Captain_Throwback posted, I get a prompt to contact AT&T to activate mobile hotspot on this device when I try to tether. Did HTC retroactively add checks?

Thanks, looking at that file I see the value for the Tethering check was 9 on my device, no idea what it originally was. Setting it to 0 and rebooting disabled the check

Do you mean false? It's set to true right now.

On AT&T, had no issues tethering today after running the update. Do you have an older plan?

Grandfathered unlimited, and I don't pay for the tethering add-on. It's idiotic they expect me to pay $20 to have the right to do what I want with my data.

Unlock your boot loader if you haven't already and flash Leedroid rom. I'm on att grandfather unlimited too and now able to Wi-Fi tether as the check is removed from the rom.

Yes. I was thinking it's an integer and not boolean.
If the entitlement_check change (as well as other changes mentioned) doesn't appear to work you may need to edit it at a db level.
If this we're a branded ROM i'd say swap wifirouter.apk out but it's generic so that should be ok.
I haven't had to do this in a while. AT&T used to use 2 different IP gateways for normal data and tethering. I'll dig into when I get time but it used to be if you re-routed the tethering traffic to the data IP it would bypass tethering requirements. Also they specifically look for Internet Explorer UA string as a flag that you're tethering a PC. you could try with safari or mozilla to see if they detect you once you're testing.

Have they fixed VoLTE for ATT on LeeDroid?
Now that we know why it does/doesn't work on some handsets (and we can fix it). It would seem to be a deal breaker for an ATT user to lose VoLTE.

Not that I'm aware of. Leedroid is based off of UK roms therefore doesn't natively support it. From my understanding, volte provides HD voice should both sending and receiving phones as well as network supports it. Since it's still a relatively new technology, not everyone has the capability to utilize it. So its not a big deal for the time being.

Even though it's UK based they could put the provisioning xmls and .prop in there to make it work.
As for HDvoice and VoLTE that's a misconception. I've been testing calls to everyone, even my Google Voice on LTE. So far they all go through as VoLTE. The reason is cross carrier compatibility takes it outside the base network level.

Gotcha. I just might ask Lee if he can implement it in the next release. Either way, not a big deal right now as far as I'm concerned. I'm just happy to be able to have a modern phone that I can bootloader unlock, root and rom on AT&T after I made the mistake of signing a two year agreement for the galaxy s6 with the futile hopes of having bootloader unlock. [emoji31] I resurrected my M8 and continued to use it until now.

I had it enabled on my M7 euro sense7 .401. ROM by editing the XMLs and build.prop. I didn't have the proper SIM in my handset to actually provision but the phone tried real hard to make VoLTE calls.
It's something that should be added for the broadest userbase.

There was another thread like this and the solution was a bit more simple... Simply pop the sim card out, turn on mobile hot-spot. It will show as on. Then pop the sim card in. Once this is done the first time, no need to remove the sim the next time you need it.

I can't use the built-in tethering, it will charge me if I use it. FoxFi should work regardless what plan you have.
I'm also on an unlimited plan and had issues with FoxFi too - not sure why... it worked for a while - then it would not let my phone use encryption - then I would get the verizon "call 611 message" (though FoxFi would still work, I'd just get a message and have to clear it out/cancel).
If you're rooted check out the OP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417226 works like a charm
If you're not on root, you'll prob have to pay for the FoxFi app, but it's like 6.95 I think - way cheaper than any ISP I know of
FoxFi appears to work fine for me. Just had to accept a certificate and put a lock on my phone. Works with no errors. But I noticed some of you stated that it started going crazy after some use down the road.
I'm not sure why my stock app doesn't work when I'm on a shared data plan. Worked on my iPhone5 10 months ago with the same exact plan.

Yeah, you'd think... but I tried stock app, get the call *611. Then, I tried FoxFi (non-paid to see if it would work) and when I go to enable the hotspot it pops up an error for *611 as well. It's saying I'm not subscribed to a hotspot plan essentially. I have a 10gb plan, which was one in the lawsuit a while back when they said you shouldn't distinguish how someone uses their 10gb. They were supposed to open the market up to 3rd party tethering apps (but weren't required to support the tethering through their stock) and I never got it working on my Droid Razr either. I now have an HTC One (kept the same plan, no changes to it) and wasn't able to get FoxFi working on it either.

Haha yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath.
That being said, I just got OpenGarden working between my phone and my Kindle FIre HD, so I can say that that works, which is more useful than anything else I've tried. A lot of tether is USB based, which isn't helpful on the tablet/Kindle front. I'm shocked/happy that I found a solution that quickly. I know when I tried in the past, even with other providers, that getting a tablet or other computer based device to work was a pain. That being said, they've got a pc/mac client, so I don't doubt that that will work too. I try to avoid hauling my laptop when I travel and for the most part I can unless I know I need to offload a ton of data from memory cards, which is usually the deciding factor. I don't know...maybe I could do usb/otg bridge of some sort to copy between phone / hdd or sd/cf/xd cards to hdd? Usually I've got enough SD or other memory cards for whatever I'm doing to not need to haul the laptop though.

Working Modified Verizon Hotspot

Here you guys, http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/development/mod-verizon-g3-hotspotmod-g2-apk-t2852152.
I'm using it to post this. Move it into System/App/HotSpotProvision folder, and set permissions. You don't have to execute any of the commands, there's an APK to download, at the bottom of the first post.
Works great, not sure if its needed but I renamed the hotspotprovision.apk that was already in the folder. I just changed the .apk to .bak and then set the permissions to RW-R-R on the hotspotprovisionVsG3mod.apk
Yeah, you should get rid of the original one. Renamed preferred.

So I took a quick look at the G3 thread. It says if you're on the share everything plan, don't use this. Is that the case with this version or are we good to go?
You should not need this unless you have unlimited data. Verizon only restricts hot spot use (tethering) on unlimited data plans.

This mod also saves those of us running a Verizon G4 on T-Mobile (or other carrier). Luckily this mod gets rid of VZW's BS. T-Mobile is a much more generous carrier than Verizon and now I can tether all of my 10GB data per month if I want to.
Thanks to OP and all of the people who worked to bring this great fix.
Is anyone else having random reliability issues with this?
Any of my devices that are tethered will periodically be able to get no data connection (no pings to 8.8.8.8 even), sometimes after 5 seconds of being connected. Sometimes after 20 minutes.
Sometimes, turning Hotspot off then On fixes it. Sometimes, I put my G4 into airplane mode and back, and it fixes it. Sometimes, I just plain reboot the phone and it fixes it.
Am I the only one experiencing it? I'm sure it's not related to this mod -- it's probably related to the original phone software. But it's quite undesirable.

Mobile Hotspot

HI,
I'm coming from a Dev . Edition M9, where my mobile hotspot feature worked right out of the box, now to an HTC purchased 10.
I'm getting the error message to contact ATT or 611 to enable this feature. I've unlocked the bootloader on it and enabled the dev features so it's virtually the same as my M9, right?
Why will my M9 work perfectly and this won't? What do I have to do to get the mobile hotspot working on the 10? Do I have to root? I would prefer not rooting because it breaks certain apps (like TWC TV). Also, my previous M9 wasn't rooted, so not sure why I'd have to do so on this phone.
I have the ATT unlimited data plan, if that matters.
Thanks for your feedback.
were you on a custom rom before? mostly likely the hotspot was unlocked in a custom rom, why you didn't get the message before.
nvm, you said you were not rooted before
the new unlimited plan from att does not allow tethering I read. don't know if you have a old plan or not

I don't know if it's old, but it is a limited data plan that includes tethering. I switched to this plan about a year ago.
I don't know if both of us have the same plan, but I don't have tethering either. I haven't had it for a while. With my unlimited plan I was paying $20 for tethering, until they added the extra $20 just to have unlimited. It wasn't worth paying all that money a month.
What I'm trying to say is that free tethering (at least in my case) ended a while ago.

Mine works on AT&T. I dunno if the rep at the AT&T store did anything special when she set it up. I'm on one of the current shared plans that they're offering right now. Tethering is included at no extra cost.
Ok, I think what I need to point out, is that I do not have tethering service.
I guess I'm alluding to how do I enable my hotspot without having to add tethering like I did with Dev. Ed. M9?

Could we just change the build prop file to allow this for carriers like Sprint? Saw this on the Moto X Pure thread. I did this and it worked for me on the Pure.
1. Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
2. Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
3. (Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
4. Open the build.prop file with a text editor
5. Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
6. Save the file and reboot your device
Yeah just noticing the tethering app does not work on my phone either and I'm on Straight Talk. Says there was an error and that I need to contact ATT. I thought that the unlocked versions of these phones didnt have the tethering app blocked....
I could fix it if my phone was rooted but I'm not sure I want to do that just yet.
Yea this sucks. I'm on a corporate account w/ unlimited data and tethering worked fine on my stock M9. Trying to avoid root so I can get OTA but may might the bullet

No root needed, no rom needed, no call to att or straight talk needed.. this is very complicated, so do at your own risk, this may fix your device!
1. Put the sim pin in the sim pinhole.
2. Push the pin in
3. Without removing the card, and not sliding the card completly out
4. Go to the hotspot and activate the hotspot @
5. Settings = more= moble network sharing ... it will activate to 'on' when you turn it on!
6. Now for the hard part, push the simcard tray back in.... working!
Dont forget to thanks!

hotspot

I rooted my phone last night very simple thanks to chainfire. I was hoping to use hotspot once my phone was rooted. I don't really want to pay the extra 30 bucks that Verizon wants for me to use the hotspot. Usually when you buy a unlocked phone or you root it you should be able to use the hotspot for free. I unlocked it and rooted it I cant still use the hotspot for free for service I already pay for.
You are going to have to edit the build.prop after rooting most likely to enable wifi tethering. I think you have to add "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true". Do a search for disable provisioning and you should find you answer.
This may work. Remember messing with your build.prop can bork your phone.

WOW AMAZING THAT WORKED!!! Awesome thanks so much. What I also found to work was a network refresher app and when it was refreshing toggle the hotspot and it would turn on. I guess that would be for someone without root, Anyways thanks so much.
Not sure if this works on Verizon but it works on StraightTalk with ATT/T-Mobile/Verizon NO ROOT REQUIRED. Just refresh network and enable hotspot while it is refreshing.

Not sure if this works on Verizon but it works on StraightTalk with ATT/T-Mobile/Verizon NO ROOT REQUIRED. Just refresh network and enable hotspot while it is refreshing.

the network refresh works but so does putting in the new build .prop. I did both its definitely a lot easier to put in the build prop so you don't have to keep refreshing to turn on the hotspot. love you guys thanks

WOW AMAZING THAT WORKED!!! Awesome thanks so much. What I also found to work was a network refresher app and when it was refreshing toggle the hotspot and it would turn on. I guess that would be for someone without root, Anyways thanks so much.

Can you unroot your phone after you've edited the build prop and still have a working mobile hotspot? I ask this because I believe Android Pay does not work with rooted phones.
I don't see why not.

T-Mobile unlimited hotspot on Oreo with root?

The old dun APN doesn't work because google now allows carriers to block it, i ran settings put global tether_dun_required 0 as superuser, and got no result...
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true give DNS probe No Internet on the connected device

Yep, same thing on Sprint. I tried all the old tricks and nada. No data would pass. Then after days of trying everything I found this.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/how-to-disable-carrier-tether-check-t3701836
It works on Sprint so. It's a long process but it worked. Since I a am already rooted I only did the bind Carrier Entitlement section.
Hope it works for every carrier that needs it.

Just a question here but why do you need it? Tmob gives unlimited tethering in the plans now.
yeah, if you have the tmobile ONE plan.. just turn on hotspot, set up a password and have another device connect..
no root needed.. no special edits or anything, it just works now..
have you tried the magisk module "tethering enabler" ?

Still throttled to half megabit.

I'm talking about unlimited on the ONE plus plan, you get 10GB's before throttled to 3G speed. I'm throttled now and I want to bypass it.
Worked for me.
But I am dealing with some throttling issues? Like If I speed test getting like 80^ 25v. But go to stream a movie. Slowww... and then went to torrent on laptop getting like 60kbs download. I saw something about changing the APN might help the torrenting but doesn't allow apn changes on Pixel 2 XL.
and on a small note I do have ONE Plus plan. and about 300 mb in so far.
T-Mobile user here.
1. Buy a VPN
2. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ardadem.vpntethering&hl=en
3. Enable hotspot, run VPN Tether, and you're good!

Change the T-Mobile APN protocol to "IPV4" (not IPV6 or IPV4/IPV6) after editing build.prop and setting tether_dun_required 0. That should do it.
Still working with February patch?

Can anyone else confirm if this method works currently with February security update? I haven't tried yet but going to very soon as I also have TMobile and would love to bypass tether checking.
It seems to be working

Right now using the default T-Mobile APN (no dun) on Android 7.0 and getting LTE speeds. Personally I use NordVPN and I love it.
I would test on Oreo but LOS on the Exynos S7 has som RIL issues at the moment it seems.

So I was using the Tether mod zip and notice as of the past few weeks ive only been getting half a megabit...
This suggestion did work well, but is there any other way to do this without the extra apps? Something built n2 a rom?

I only know of VPN Tether app, which requires root, and PDANet+ also works. I don't think there's a ROM with a feature to bypass Tethering throttling, sorry man.

I didn't find an official one but anyway here is the playstore link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet&hl=en_US
I think the free version limits you to 5GB every time you connect, or something like that. I bought the paid key which is like $8, but no limits, so that's pretty cool, but kinda expensive lol.
I tried it this morning omw to work, and I didn't see much of a difference in speed. May have been the area I was in.
In still on the Galaxy S6 Edge and was considering getting a new phone to get around this... But based on what I'm reading, the limitation is the same with all phones? I may as well just throw an Oreo rom GS6e since it's still solid.. right?
Did you try the other workaround with the VPN tether app? That worked pretty well for me.

Not sure how it works for T-Mobile, but I know that Three in the UK detect tethering using the TTL. The way I understand it is the mobile operator looks at the TTL of packets going through the network. Windows default TTL is 128 hops, android is 64. Therefore any packets with a TTL of more than 64 hops is from a tethered device. However, it's possible to change this in windows, just set the TTL to 65, so that after the hop to your phone it's down to 64 and looks like a regular packet coming from your phone.
YMMV and it depends how your mobile operator, but whenever I tether my laptop it doesn't use any of my tethered data allowance.
To change TTL on windows, you just need to create a registry key <Insert usual 'messing with your registry is a bad idea if you don't know what you're doing' text>. Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
Create a new DWORD (32-bit) called 'DefaultTTL' and set its value to 65, then restart for good luck. If you want to undo this, you can either just change the value to 128 or delete the key.
